Burning DVD, no progress...

HI, I'm trying to burn a DVD in DVD studio pro 4, it starts, and in the log tab I'm seeing It does Complier initializing pass, Precompiling Project pass, Parsing Assets.
.. and It stops at Encoding Assets... forever. Is it normal?
Why is encoding again my assets when I did it in the Compressor?
All my assets are ac3 and m2v files, already encoded in compressor. Do I have to encode them differently?
My material is 3.1 GB, how long usually takes to encode that in DVD studio pro 4? This is confusing me, I had my compressor encoding the material all night.... and now again...

Man I Installed it on my laptop just to check if it is going to work after I reinstalled it 2-3 times on my G5. I'm audio recording engineer, and since I bought the bundle 2 years ago for the project, used it only for that project. Now I'm trying to do some home video, and I already spent so much time trying to fix what is supposed to work worry free...
No, I'm not using it on two machines, I'm not using it even on one!
Thanks for your response, but that did not help me resolve the issue here. I've been with macs since the quadra NU- BUS, and nowdays they look more and more like a PC. I'm a heavy Pro tools user, with a huge Pro Tools HD 3 accel system, and happens ho have a glitches once in a whille after all that money spent,....

Compressor 3.5 - Burn DVD Preset - Doesn't Burn DVD

Hello,
Loving the Compressor 3.5 Burn DVD preset, but lately, it's not loving me back.
I send a movie to Compressor, select the "Burn DVD" preset, let the project encode, wait for the burn process to begin, get to "1 minute remaining" on the screen, then BAM!
Compressor goes from "1 minute remaining" to 2, 3, 4+ minutes remaining. And the DVD I've been waiting for isn't burned. I look at the unrecorded part of the DVD and only see my reflection (I take this as the unburned DVD mocking me, as I sit/stare at it, as if I were in some sort of "stupid" contest with the thing).
I let the machine sit for several minutes to an hour. Nothing.
I've changed DVD brands. Nothing.
I tell the machine that everything is going to be alright. Nothing.
My FCP system was acting very buggy lately (relating to fonts). I created a new user account and it solved all my issues FCP/Motion font issues. But this Compressor issue is something new.
Now, if I go back to my old account, I get the same hang up with Compressor. The Create DVD Preset is encoding my stuff, but not burning my stuff.
In the interim, I'm taking the encoded assets into DVDSP, and creating a menu-less Video DVD.
Taking comments, questions and suggestions about how to solve this issue.
Compressor, where is the love?

Can Compressor output a disc image properly? That could be burned with Disc Utility.
Does the Create Disc app ever launch? There is no progress window, but you can see a new app and menu bar appear. Also, try doing this with Activity Monitor open. It would be good to know if the fault is Create Disc, or something else.

Loss of quality from iMovie Project to Burned DVD

I have read some strings regarding this subject but I'm still left with questions.
I have created a photo collage set to music, in iMovie. It's 12 minutes long, and when I play it in iMovie on my computer, it looks great. All the photos are crystal clear, rich with color, and vibrant in all the right places.
I played the file in Quicktime 10.0 and it looks great.
The info in the Quicktime Inspector is
Format: H.264, 1920x1080, Millions AAC, 2 Channels, 44100 Hz
FPS: 29.97
Data Rate: 20.23 Mbit/s
Current Size: 1549x871
I burned this to a DVD using Toast Titanium (because ever since my iLife '11 upgrade my iDVD hasn't worked past startup. I can't get it to do anything at all.)
Somewhere between the Quicktime movie and the Burned DVD, the movie loses a significant amount of quality. It seems all the colors are washed out. I can see my edits on some of the photos... it looks like crap. To me it looks awful, to others it may not look as bad, but I know the difference. It looks awful.
Can someone please tell me why this is happening and how I can prevent it? All while still using iMovie through this whole process, and Toast for burning?

The quality workaround I proposed assumes the person starts with a progressive source material. The original poster did as I don't see how you would import true progressive source media and get interlaced artifacts at the end, especially for stills! We are not in the days of the Sony Mavica you know. What you are doing is importing interlaced video and processing it in interlace with a progressive scan workflow. The combing artifacts you saw is from the consumer algorithm that is inherent in iMovie 11. I know iMovie 6HD and FCE or FCP have better de-interlacing algorithms. You can by pass iMovie 11's weakness by treating the interlaced video through a commercial/high end de-interlace software and get better results.
As long as you are working with a progressive source media, then you are not bound by de-interlacing artifacts unless your movie was shot in it. Suffice to say, best de-interlace programs cost money and a lot of computing power. That is not something the majority of computer owners use iMovie possess. I see you have a high end Mac Pro. I also have a high end Quad PC with a high end Nvidia graphics card to utilize its hundreds of CUDA cores for vReveal to eat on. But that's not what the general public of Mac or PC owners have nor what the general public buy during Black Friday or Boxing Day in Canada either. High end Macs or high end Quad PCs go with high end video editing software where the de-interlacing and the encoding and decoding algorithms are much better than the consumer versions.
This is OBVIOUS! Better algorithms will simply slow down any mid-end Macs to mid-end PCs to a low teeny 1-5 fps processing a video clip in H.264 in very very high quality and multiple passes. This is not acceptable to the general public. Which is why, you are also seeing noise artifacts in the workflow too, because you need to first de-interlace the source media and then re-encode to H.264 which obviously adds artifacts to the source before you can use it with iMovie 11, so clearly iMovie 6HD has a clear advantage. This carries over to the final workflow. But most AVCHD material out there is compressed too!
Consumers need to be aware that there is a difference between consumer grade software and commercial grade software. Also, commercial grade software require a hefty computer to do its job reasonably well! People need to understand that just because you own a nice $900 to $1000 camcorder does not mean that your mid-end Mac can deal with it.
Getting quality is so easy. Just spend lots and lots of money on hardware to shave off 15mins to a few hours of video encoding to digital video processing, but at what end because it will never end!
I've seen a few footages floating around on Youtube that looks really good made with iMovie 11. Just keep in mind that there are always tradeoffs for reasonable rendering time vs cost of your computer package.

IDVD 08 burn DVD project ERROR!?

Trying to burn my project that i've made in iMovie HD, export it to .mov file, then opened 3 .mov files in iDVD project, added some pictures and music, played with chapter and tried to BURN DVD.
Everything is OK when I click preview, everything is OK with ENCODING in Background=done, NTFS, 4,2,GB but only 3GB project, 16:9...all fine. Then I click *BURN DVD*:
_There were warnings during the project validation. It is recommended that you fix these problems before burning the project._
I click *CONTINUE BURNING*, proces menus, proces slideshows, proces movies - everything OK, *burn DVD* - *the program just shut down*.
*What should I do?*
I've tried burn VIDEO_TS folder - same thing.
Now trying save as disk image...hope this works.

Please help...I am so close but also so far away.

I repeatedly get "error during rendering/encoding of menus/slideshow" message. This process is the same on my iMac, MacBook and another iMac. I have been burning dvd's int he same way for the past 12 months using the exact same steps successfully.

I keep getting "error during rendering/encoding of menus/slideshows" message. I have been burning DVD's in exactly the same way for the past 12 months and mostly on my MacBook which is 3 years old. Obviously I'm using iDVD. I purchased an iMac about a year ago and moved to use this for dvd burning without problem. A few months ago (approximately) I started to experience problems with burning with the error message above. I tried everything including starting the whole process from scratch right down to capturing the movie clips from my video recorder into iMovie, then using them in iDVD. Still the same message came up. I lost count of how many times I repeated the process with different clips and variations and the same thing happened. This was also the case with my MacBook and my husband's iMac.
After taking both of mymac's tothe service centre, having new optical thingys put it and even a new hard drive on my iMac along with a new DVD burner the same thing happened. They told me it must be the process that I am using that is incorrect!
I took my 27" iMac to an apple shop and asked them to assist me while I use the same technique as I always had. The same message came up so they tried using my clips in one of their mac's. The same message. They tried it with different clips and the same message. The only way we could get theirs to work was with a magic DVD which did not produce what I needed and was limited with only one page.
I now cannot use any of my Mac's for the intended purpose that I bought them for - to produce good media for my work! It was suggested that I purchase some non Mac software to burn DVDs which defeats the object of having a mac with iDVD in my opinion. I have a book on iDVD which is very informative and have followed the process to the letter and checked all the trouble shooting and still no remedy. It was mentioned that an up-date may have caused the problem on all my macs.
I feel that this issue should be addressed by Apple as a matter of correctness.
I now find that on the net there are many posts in forums and such like with exactly the same (almost word for word) problems. Please Apple, keep/regain your good name and sort this out.

Thanks Bengt W for your attention to this matter. So much appreciated. And thanks for putting me right on the aim of forums (new to this). Although, you may regret asking for more information. I've added everything I can below.
The process I used is as follows:
Import recorded clips of between 5 and 15minutes each from my video recorder into i
Edit the clips (remove unwanted start and endng)
Add title to front of clips
‘Share’ them to ‘movie’ (export using QuickTime)folder in .mov format individually
Open iDVD and ‘create new project’
Select ‘favourite’ theme that I have set up forall my work dvd’s (this has been used successfully many times and I’ve triedwithout using the favourite them).
Add 2 submenus for each group of clips
Select submenu - drag and drop between 3 – 6 clips in each of the twosubmenus
Change title colours on clips
Dragand drop image into drop zones where required
In‘map’ view I check for any yellow warnings before burning to disc
In an attempt to remedy the problems I’ve tried the following:
Try new DVD discs
Try different themes (favourites and standardones)
Change images in drop zones
Start whole process again even from importingfrom camera again
Two other completely different computers (iMacand MacBook) with iDVD
Go to apple shop and use their computers to doin iDVD
Try with one clip and no menu pages added
Use a clip that I already have that did notoriginate from my camera
Turn computer off and restart
New hard drive
New optical lense (thing)
New DVD burner
Saving to disc image rather than dvd disc
Other points:
I also have a ‘flip’ and ‘iPhone’ whereI’ve imported footage camera which, although limited, records and makes videoclips and burns them to DVD through iDVD without problem.
For example, I have just gone through steps 5 - 11 using some clips that were already imported from my iphone to iPhoto and dragged across. I used a theme that I've used before which has failed and added one sub menu page where the clip went. It burned to disc image successfully.
The startup disc, I believe will have no space issues asit’s a new hard drive with no use apart from this. That could have been an issue before (I didn’t check it) butnot now.
Other technical stuff that I don't understand but you may:

Can't burn DVDs? Try this first...

Like a number of other folks, I had an unexplained failure to burn DVDs and thought something Very Bad had happened to my drive. However, doing some research before buying a new drive (if I had to buy one, might as well get the Latest and Greatest right?) I found there's a lot of really bad media out there. Companies are buying some really cheap junk, slapping their label on it, and putting it on the shelves.
So before doing anything drastic, try this:
Go to Applications -> Utilities and start "System Profiler".
In System Profiler, left hand column (labeled "contents") click "Disc Burning".
Insert a disk you haven't been able to burn.
When (sometimes "if") the disc mounts, refresh System Profiler (command-R or from the View menu select "Refresh"). At some point, you should get something like this:
Media:
Type: DVD-R
ID: CMC MAG. AM3
Blank: No
Erasable: No
Overwritable: No
Appendable: No
Pay attention to the ID field. In this case, "CMC MAG. AM3"
Pop over to:

And search for your disc ID. This likely is "all run together". That is, for "CMC MAG. AM3", you look for:
CMCMAGAM3
And, presto, the discs my drive "quit" on are listed in the section:
"4TH CLASS MEDIA:
"Pathetic garbage media, landfill material, about 0-50% success rate. These discs are pretty much only suited for preventing drink cup rings from forming on a table. Most of the time, these are ready-made coasters. If you can actually get a burner to acknowledge the disc, do not expect much. And if the burn actually succeeds, do not be surprised if a DVD-ROM or player chokes on the disc (read/play errors). Cheap prices, cheap junk quality."

Mind you, I did not buy "CMC Magnetics" discs. I bought a "brand name". I got CMC Magnetics discs with a "brand name" label. And, apparently, their lowest quality (they do have some listed as "3rd Class Media" but not the ones I have).
This would also explain why I managed to get several burns from the spindle then everything just up and stopped. A "0-50% success rate" means I can expect half *or more* of the discs to fail. I managed about 30% before reaching a run of total garbage in the spindle.
(In fact, many of the remaining discs--I've taken different ones out of the spindle at random--won't even mount.)
Also, the fact that companies are "out sourcing" means that even though you may have tried different "brands", you may actually still be getting discs from the same crappy factory! Scroll down to "Branding Guide" at the digitalfaq.com site and you find that CMC is supplying (among many):
Datawrite, HP, Maxell, Memorex, Staples, and some TDK even!
Buying different "brands" doesn't necessarily mean you've bought different discs.
So before doing anything drastic, before assuming the drive has konked out, buy some one packs or three packs of the "1st Class Media" and try them. I haven't a problem with the ones I bought from companies listed as providing "1st Class Media".
Based on the "Branding Guide", I suggest buying a few from one or more of:
Verbatim
Sony
Panasonic
Then see if your drive problem suddenly clears up. Did for me. Now to figure out what to do with the 60+ CMC coasters I have left...

And tried it out. It worked for me. Just leave the "Format" setting to: Pre-recorded Information in Lead-in. Insert a disk, click on the drive name in the top box of the window when the name appears (takes a sec as the disk is mounted). You get hex (which to most folks is known as "gibberish" <g>). But in the first couple of lines on the right hand side, you should see the manufacturer info such as:

How can I convert my imovie from ipad to burn dvd on PC

I have produced a 30 minute video for my son's football team using Imovie on my ipad. I do not have an apple computer and need to convert the imovie to my PC in order to burn DVD's. This process seems impossible. I have read many forums and am trying to export the project to my camera roll, however the process never completes itself. It will export for literally hours without completing the process. This project have taken me weeks to complete, mainly because the process is very slow with imovie and extremely frustating. Now, I'm ready to finish up and am so worried I will never get it off my ipad. What do I do??

Error when burning DVD

I just bought a Mac a few weeks ago, and have had some trouble burning DVD's. I have a G5 running 10.3.9, with a Pioneer Superdrive. I try to burn an image in Disk Utility, but get the error message "The disc is reserved for exclusive use by another application". When I try just burning files using finder, it says "This disc cannot be used". I have tried DVD-R and DVD+R. Anyone have any ideas?

Welcome to apple discussions. Just to add to the already excellent advice kindly provided to you by Fred Shippey;
I too have one or two suggestions:
First is to delete the plist for iDvd (but first quit the app). The plist is located in your preferences folder and looks like this (assuming the app has been launched at least once):
com.apple.iDvd.plist
Now try your iDvd project again. But if that too fails then ...
Delete encoded assets from the Advanced menu tab and then try the burn again.
That procedure looks like this. Hope this helps but if not just come on back. Good luck.

Error when burning dvd's

I have a satellite a305 with vista. I had been downloading torrents awhile back and got a nasty something because my computer went crazy. I managed to "fix" it except that the keyboard and mouse were nonresponsive. A usb mouse worked but no usb keyboard would install. Despite this, I was still able to burn dvd's.
Now, since it is unacceptable to NOT have a properly working keyboard I had to factory reset the computer. Now it all works great.
EXCEPT when I burn a dvd (dropping files to it....I haven't downloaded any 3rd party software) it starts to encode...gets to about 3.5% and then encodes super fast (usually burning a dvd takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours) and eject the disc after 30 seconds. A window pops up saying an error ocurred while burning the dvd. I am using memorex dvd-r discs. It did the same thing when I used my old disks (Sony dvd-r) but I assumed that since they were scratched a bit that must be causing an error.
I just want to make my DVD's. So frustrated!! I tried checking to see if Toshiba had a driver update I was missing since I did an out of the box reset, but they're screen to choose my laptop doesn't have my model available.
Any ideas for me?

Burning DVD from disc image

I've been burning DVD's from disc images using Encore 1.0 for some time now. ever since I upgraded to 2.0, Encore gives me error messages on my project like:
"first play not set" and
"remote control problem".
I don't see how these messages can appear when I'm using a disc image (i.e. a completed project) as the source. does anyone know?

When you click on the Build DVD button in the Disc panel, Encore does a quick check of errors
in the current project. If you have a new, empty project, you will at least get errors about First Play and Title Remote. Those errors have nothing to do with your disc image, they apply to the current project, from which you are trying to burn your disc image.
These errors may be safely ignored, since they don't have any effect on your disc image.

Superdrive stopped burning DVD no longer recognized by computer

I am using an i Book G4. I have been consistently burning DVD's on the superdrive for several days. Today in iDVD it said there was no superdrive on the computer. I can however play DVD's on the drive. Is this a soft ware or hard ware problem? I don't know what else to check. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

I assume what you were asking was what program I was using to burn the DVD. I was using iDVD and that is the program that first told me my machine did not have a burner. I use the disk image to actually burn the DVD. I have found it much more stable than trying to burn from iDVD no matter which of the 3 Mac computers I use. Thanks for you input. I was hoping there was a way to see if there was a software corruption causing the burn DVD to disconnect. I appreciate your interest.

Error message when burning DVDs

Hi, I've been burning DVDs on my computer for over a year. However I'm now getting the following error message:
sense key = medium error
sense code = 0 x 57
Unable to recover table of contents.
I've tried documents and video and a couple of different blank DVD brands...Is it stuffed or fixable. FYI the cd burner is working fine and its reading DVDs Ok as well.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I ran the Onyx on both my machines and still have the same problems.
The PB 1.25 whirls and spits the discs out (any disc).
The iMac 800 now has a new error code since running Onyx.

The message reads "communication to the disc drive failed."
I'm going to try one last thing with the iMac. That is using those expensive Apple-made and approved DVD's. I'm using Maxell DVD-RW. Never had a problem with them on the PB, never used them on the iMac. I'm off to the dealer... I'm buying an external DVD burner for the PB- $200 vs. $600... it's a no brainer, just none of the convenience... best, Edward

Error occur when burning DVD

My macbook pro can't burn DVD, both DVD-r and DVD+R DL.
I tried to use a better media (eg. verbatim) and slower speed (1X)
but the problem comes again and again.
I suspect the error may relate to the failure of "laser component" in the DVD drive
Because when I was using LiquidCD ,whcih is a DVD buring software, to burn DVDs,
the error message said that the software cannot control the strength of the laser.
Does it mean the problem relates to the failure of "laser component" in the DVD drive?
Also, I tried Hardware Test, but it said everything is fine.
Any method can help to check or solve the problem?

Take it to an Apple Store or call Applecare assuming it is under warranty. Is this problem only with this software, which I have to admit I have never heard of.
Out of warranty I'd get an external burner vs. fix it since they perform better anyway.
