After you plug an Apple USB SuperDrive into an iMac, what must you do to view or to burn DVD videos?

    What iMac..?
The Apple USB SuperDrive only supports new iMac's that did not come with a built-in SuperDrive.
    System Requirements
    Compatible with the following computers:
    MacBook Pro with Retina display
    MacBook Air
    iMac (late 2012)
Mac mini (late 2009) and later

  • Burns DVDs,  WON'T play commercial DVDs

So I seem to be having the REVERSE problem from everyone else. My iMac G4 (17", 1GHz processor, 512 MB RAM), which I just bought for a piddling $200, will play and burn CDs / CD-RWs just fine. It will also correctly identify blank DVDs that I stick in the drive. It will BURN DVDs. In a few hours, I'll be able to tell you if it will read data DVDs.
The ONLY THING it won't do is play COMMERCIAL DVDs. I pop in a video DVD, it spins up, tries to read it, then spits it back out. Now, I know the not playing DVDs problem is not a unique one, but in reading on these forums, that seems to always be a symptom of the DVD laser diode having gone bad, which is certainly NOT the case here (as it's merrily burning away).
My GUESS would be that--somehow--my installation is missing the CSS library necessary to decode commercial DVDs. I had a similar problem getting my iPod Touch to talk to iTunes. But is that even possible? And, if so, how do I go about rectifying this issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I FIXED IT!!!!!!
I read somewhere else on this forum about someone having a similar problem to mine. He took the iMac to a service depot, but when he got it there, they couldn't replicate the problem. He took it home, and HE couldn't replicate the problem. As in, it was now fixed. Turns out that just unplugging the unit gave the Superdrive a chance to "reset."
So I unplug my iMac to test this out, as well as to see if I can unscrew the access panel to determine how easy it'd be to upgrade its RAM. Well, I could only get one of the screws out, but when I plugged it back in, turned it back on and popped in the collector's edition of "2001: A Space Odyssey," DVD Player came up and began playing the disc! Never has "Thus Sprach Zarathustra" sounded so amazing!
So, thank you, John Westwood1! Thank you!

  • Importing from burned DVDs

    Hi,
I'm about to buy a Canopus ADVC300 to import old VHS home movies into FCE, but I'd also like to import footage from some full length burned DVDs so that I can add effects, titling etc. (They're school plays, so no copyright protections, etc.) Can I also use that device to import the DVDs? I'm not sure if it will work since the DVDs are technically already digital, but I'd like to be able to use the Canopus to clean up the inevitably shakiness and bad audio quality. Will this work? Can I just plug my DVD player into the Canopus the way I would a VCR? Is there a better solution that will maintain/clean up the quality?
    Thanks!

Yes, you can plug your DVD player into the ADVC-300 just the same as your VCR.
An alternative which will be faster is MPEG Streamclip to directly convert the DVD video to DV or AIC for editing in Final Cut. MPEG Streamclip is free and exellent. However you may need to purchase the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component from Apple ($19.99) if you don't already have it installed on your Mac. (The conversion is faster because the ADVC works in real time as you play back the video on the VCR or DVD player; MPEG Streamclip can directly convert the video and audio from the files on the DVD).

  • DVR to Imovie to edit to burn DVD

Goal - To post my 2-5 minute TV segments on my website. I need to edit an hour show to my 2-5 minutes, burn DVD's and convert to post on website. I thought I would record a DVD (need to get a DVD recorder) from the DVR, convert it to an MP4 and download it into Imovie to edit but an hour show takes days to download.
There must be a quicker way. Can I download directly from the DVR into Imovie? Use my DAC to convert or buy Quicktime Pro to edit and burn an edited DVD?
I don't mind spending a little money for ease as I am technically challenged. I would greatly appreciate anyone's advise.
    Thank you.
    I have:
    Dish DVR 722
    Dac Converter
    MAC OS X 10.5.3
    Imovie 5. and 8.

I'm not familiar with DVRs, but the well reputated Streamclip offers support for downloading via firewire from some DVR-like devices...
for converting the files, you probably need the 20$ Apple mpeg2-playback-plug-in....
hope, that is a little help...

  • Burning DVD-R Problem

Recently I decided to save some larger files on a DVD-R. Aftering burning, I'll click on the disque to make sure the file burned. The file would open without problems. However, if I eject the disque, then re-insert it, it won't read. Just eventually eject. So far, I've run through three DVD-R's. I've plugged in a regular pre-recorded DVD, which opened fine. And I've never had any problems burning CD's.
Is there some burning setting I'm missing? I think it's been set on the fastest. Or is it the DVD-R brand, picked up at Radio Shack?
    Brand: Philips DVD-R 1-16X speed, 4.7 GB
    Cheers

    Welcome to the discussions.
There are a few things to remember, when burning DVD's
It is a good practice, DO NOT use or have other APPlications Running while Burning a DVD Project. NO Browsing the Internet, or other Programs Open and Running.
Apple's Burning Software is funtional to a point.
If you are a serious DVD burner, Use one of Roxio's Software. Toast-7 or Popcorn.
Burning DVD's is very RAM Intensive. 512 will work but not to optimum preformance. Where Ram is concerned MORE IS ALWAYS BETTER.
Depending on the exact burner Apple has placed in your computer it looks like your burner will only burn at 1X or 2X tops. This will take 2 to 4 hours at this speed. Reading, Writing, and Verifing is time consuming.
Last but not least the Quality of the Media you use can also play a huge role in your ability to burn a pristine copy of any project.
    I recommend DVD-R Media.
There is a big difference in the Speed you use as well.
Read the packaging and make sure the media you use will read and write
1X,2X,4X,8X,16X. The newer Good Quality Media will give you these options. I personally use ( Maxell 16X DVD-R)
Only the Newest Burners will burn at the higher speeds like 8X.

  • Will Not Burn DVD: Error code 0x8002006D

    Hello
I have a 12" PowerBook G4 fitted with a SuperDrive running Tiger 10.4.11. My machine will still play & burn CD's it will still play DVD's but it will not burn DVD's.
When trying to burn a DVD it comes up with following message:
Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred
    (Error code 0x8002006D).
I am trying to burn using Verbatim DVD-R, which I have successfully used in the past.
Any ideas what the problem is, and are there any possible solutions?
    Thanks for any help.

I've never had any issues with it either, I still think it's a good utility.
For burners, an external would be easiest to use as it plugs into a port on the machine. The lacie burners are ok, overall decent software & firmware support. I tore my apart to use the drive in a G4 tower, software all still works!
Get one that can use firewire & usb. the PPC will boot from a firewire external DVD & it could also be used later, if needed, on a machine that doesn't have FW.
Another option is macsales.com here in the States sells the exact same slot drive apple does for about $90. They do ship internationally, about $25 USD to London. If you want an internal solution this would be the way to go.

  • Serious Error Shut Down when Burning DVD

When attempting to burn DVD, Premiere Elements 3.0 immediately says there has been a serious error and program must shut down. Video was captured from camcorder, is about 12 minutes, just a couple of scene buttons on scene menu. Using an HP 2.4 ghz quad-core PC with 3 GB ram. I'm using DVD burner in other programs with no problem.

Success---I followed some troubleshooting links and the one that worked was as follows:
    4. Re-create the Premiere Elements PluginCache.
The PluginCache is a Windows registry entry that contains information regarding the status of all native and third-party plug-ins used with Premiere Elements. To re-create the file, hold down the Shift key while choosing Start > Programs > Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0. Release the key when the Select Initial Workspace window appears.
Thanks for all the help...hard to believe the fix is as simple as holding down the shift key as the progam starts!!

  • Upgraded to leoperd now I can't burn DVD's

Doesn't a compatible version of iDVD come w/ leoperd? Do I have to buy iLife too? Wouldn't someone have told me this when I was at the store buying the leoperd disc? Is there something I did wrong in the installation process?

Hi JDM and welcome to the forums!
Doesn't a compatible version of iDVD come w/ leoperd
The then current version of the iLife applications are included when you buy a new Mac with Leopard pre-installed.
Do I have to buy iLife too
Yes, if you want to upgrade to a newer version than the one that came with your Mac.
Wouldn't someone have told me this when I was at the store buying the leoperd disc?
Not if you didn't ask about iLife!
I deduce that your Mac did not have Leopard pre-installed when you bought it and that you purchased the Leopard install disk to upgrade from Tiger.
Is there something I did wrong in the installation process?
Possibly, if you have lost the ability to burn DVDs.
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac, or even re-installing them, will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1338
(Just using Tiger as an example) Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version you are installing. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3, and when you have upgraded to Leopard.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

FC/e is based upon the Quicktime-engine; so, on 'Export using QT', you'll get all codecs & settings.
    but which one..
due to sheer popularity, YouTube became a 'standard' - I'm happy with the convenience, YT and the 'embed'-code offers - excellent quality, automatic adjusted to the watchers connection&hardware.
    my export settings are 720p, h264, 6MBit/sec - gives a - imho! - superb quality.
(example of a 'screen-test' from my latest project CLICK )
for creating so-called 'flash video'/.flv, you need 3rd party apps.
Sorenson Squeeze is more of an pro-tool, .. you need some background knowledge to get noticeable 'better' quality.
.. and the question is: are you willing to pay $.$$$ for that 0.x% more quality .. ? does your source offers such a 101% quality, which needs such affords?
if bandwidth is an issue, because you're hosting on your own servers, consider the free codec xh264, you can install as a free QT-plug-in.. with low or super-low bitrates, it offers a superior quality compared to h264 ...

  • M30x MultiDrive will not burn DVDs from Windows Movie Maker

    Hi,
My M30x MultiDrive will not burn DVDs from Windows Movie Maker and other applications.
I have also had problems burning CDs (unbranded) from Windows XP, built in utility.
Does the multidrive have problems, with cheaper brand disks?
    Just to note,
The laptop has been back to the support guys three times so far with various issues.
    (1) The hard drive failed.
    (2) The multidrive failed.
    (3) The motherboard got replaced, because of power failures, it wouldnt charge the battery or recognise that the power adapter was plugged in.
Note: The harddisk, not the exhaust fan makes the most noise in mine!
    Thanks

    Hi
As far as I know the preinstalled burning software (i.e. record now, drag ndrop) disabled the Windows XP burning option. In this case if you want to use the Movie Maker or Windows media player burning option, you should to enable this possibility.
Please go to driver properties (right click). Please select the Recording tab. The option Enable CD recording on this drive should be marked.
I use the Nero burning software and in my opinion its a one of the best burning programs. Furthermore you should try different CD/DVD manufacturers because some CDs and DVDs are not compatible with some drives. Check the TDK CDs and DVDs. I never had any problems with these medias.
    Best regards

  • Burn DVD content to CD in Encore

    Hi,
I have Master Collection CS3 and am trying to get an Encore project to auto play on a CD (this short movie is going to be distributed to customers & I want to make sure everyone can view it - not just those who have a dvd drive on their computers).
I found documentation that Encore 2.0 allowed burning DVD-compliant projects to CDs but I can't find the capability in Encore CS3. Is there a plug-in or some other way to burn to CD?
I tried saving as .swf, converting to .exe & burning to CD which works really well for autoplaying on PCs but it obviously won't work on Macs.
Any tips or advice would be very much appreciated.

Sorry, but no version of Encore has ever supported burning a project to CD.

  • Both Superdrives won't burn DVDs or CDs

Hello everyone.  I'm having a serious problem.  Both of the Superdrives in my MacPro (1.1) will not burn DVDs or CDs.  They read discs just fine.  They just won't burn -- in ANY program (DVD Studio Pro, Finder, iDVD).
I have scoured the forums to answers to this problem, and NOTHING has worked.  I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue.
Here is a list of things I've tried:
    Disc cleaner
    Reducing burning speed
Different DVD media.  I've tried every brand and speed out there.  Verbatim, Memorex, Sony, generics, etc.
Re-install operation system.  The issue started on Leopard.  A reinstall didn't help.  I'm not on Snow Leopard and having the same problem.
Checked connections. (all plugs are snug)
    Some thoughts:
I find it hard to believe that this is a case of bad superdrives.  They both stopped working at the same time.
I have an external firewire burner that works just fine.
Thanks for whatever help or advice you can provide!

I'm not sure if we can post links to other mac forum threads, but I found this:
    Open System Preferences.
    Click on "International"
Under "Languages": Drag any of the other languages to the top,
then drag English back to the top.
Set "Order for sorted lists" to English
Set "Word Break" to English (United States, computer)
    Close System Preferences
    Restart computer
What you can try is typing the exact phrase of the error message into google... in parentheses, and you will find a lot of hits, and maybe the answer. Good luck!
PS... I know the "fix" above sounds like nonsense, and it might be, but several claimed it worked...

  • Can a Macbook Pro 13" (late 2011 model) burn DVD's??

Simplistic question I realise. But I just need a quick answer (on behalf of my mum!...)
If not, what's the best way of going about getting app/s or an external 'plug-in' burner (preferably blu ray), to achieve this?
Also, do the models after this date have this ability or not, I heard 'not'?
    Thanks, Stolky

It has a built-in optical drive, so it can burn DVDs using Disk Utility or the Finder or iTunes.
Starting with the 15" Mid-2012 Retina models you need to use an external optical drive.

  • No sound when playing burned DVD with Windows Media Player

    Hello!
I made a 10 minute movie which I burned , tested and delivered today.
But it turns out that when playing the DVD with WMP, there is no sound.
I had tested the movie playing it with powerDVD, and it worked as it should. When playing it with a normal DVD player and TV it works allright.
But I had not tested it with WMP. And sure enough, when playing it with WMP there is no sound!
The ones who will show the DVD will do it from a computer to a video projector, and maybe they don't have a "proper" DVD program installed. But I heard that there was sound when playing with "VLC" which is a relief.
But I feel the need to get to the bottom of why there is no sound with WMP? Any clues?

In NTSC-land, one has but two choices: PCM/WAV or DD AC3, which is a particular "flavor" of MPEG. In PAL-land, one does have the option of MPEG (not DD AC3) as an option, but that seems to be falling out of favor.
When MS was re-tooling WMP, they wanted to add back the functionality of commercial (pressed/replicated) DVD's, but sought to limit any burned DVD's. Do not know what the mindset is now, so much could have changed with a few iterations of WMP. I have to admit that I just do not reach for it that often.
In the Project, or Disc, menus, one can tell En which Audio Transcoding to use. As John T, suggests, I would definitely do a test with PCM/WAV, and X my fingers.
If your client(s) is/are set on WMP as the player, there is hopefully a scheme that you can get to work. Also, remember that some older versions of WMP might not play the DVD at all, unless one finds the right plug-in, that basically hacked the intended setup in those older versions. Just like when delivering to a client, and not knowing their systems' calibration, or setup, trying to cover every base in a particular player software might involve a lot of work, and prayer.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
