Burning DVD's not working

My Disc Drive has just started to play up.
I can burn CD's, but they won't play in my car anymore.
I can watch movies no problem.
When I try to burn data discs using Toast8, every blank dvd-r disc I insert keeps getting ejected after 20-30 seconds.
I have read in the forums that this seems to have happened to people since some update, but no-one is offering any solutions.
PLEASE HELP!

turns out it was faulty, in the shop with only 4 months left on warranty...yay

  • Burned DVD does not work in all players

    Hi all,
I am quite new to authoring my own DVDs, but since I married more or less recently I thought it is a nice idea to author a DVD with our wedding pictures for family and friends. So I spent enough time in iDVD selecting themes, slide shows, music etc. Finally a previewed everything and - yeah - happy.
So I wrote a disk image and burned this using the apple disk tool. So far so good. Mounting the newly recorded DVD workes perfect and the DVD player app works like no charm. Every menu, sound - as I want it.
Happy, running down to the living room and try it in the stand alone DVD player (Sony HD recorder) and - big disappointment. DVD runs, first menu pops up, and the slide show starts. But after the end, it does not return to the menu, it just keeps looping the slideshow. To make it even worse, the menu button on the remote just restarts the slideshow. What the f... is wrong?
Is there something I can to / configure to make it work correctly?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks & Cheers,
    Daniel

    Daniel,
On your mac, open the disc image with apple's dvd player application. Assuming it plays exactly as expected and there are no issues with scene selections, buttons, etc.
Now you can use apple's disc utility (or Roxio Toast) to burn it to dvd-r. I recommend Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, or Maxell for best results. Do not exceed 4x burn speed.
Let's say you get this far and the burned dvd plays perfectly on your mac. Now it's time to try it out on a set top dvd player. Sony makes some fantastic dvd players but I would try other players as well. Best place to do this is at a store that sells dvd players like Fry's Electronics, Best Buy, Walmart, or whatever stores are available in your own area.
Hand the dvd you created to a salesperson at one of these stores and ask the him/her to help you test drive a variety of set top dvd players to see which ones accept the dvd in question. My guess is that it will work fine on most of these players but if not just come on back for more help.

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive is now working.
If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

    Hi,
A DVD drive that is not working after many years not used:
most probably dust on the little laser lens.
Take the drive out and if you can reach this lens: clean it with pure alcohol on Q-Tip.
Many people throw away cd or dvd players all the time because they stopped working, and very often it can easily be fixed by cleaning this lens.
I used to have a G5, where I couldn't access that lens. It was very sensitive to dust.
I have fixed it several times with compressed air. One time I didn't have canned air, but a bikepump did the trick.
If you have another mac, I'd try to access the G4 internal disk with firewire target disk mode.
    good luck

  • Burned DVD does not play in MacBook Pro but does in other computers.

Hi, everyone. I have recently had some issues playing backed up copies of DVDs that I have. These two particular DVDs have not been able to play properly with DVD player. They will begin playing but never actually make it to the main menu screen. I have tried downloading other media software, such as VLC, but this has not been of any help.
What's even more bizarre is that they successfully play in my old Dell computer (Inspiron 700m) and a desktop HP that the rest of the family uses. Does anyone have any insight or advice? Thanks.

In addition, make sure the burned DVDs are not dirty, cracked and/or smudged in any way. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50448 *How to Handle and Clean CD and DVD Discs*
Your drive may need cleaning. Cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs.

  • Burn/Dodge tool not working

I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 9.
When using it earlier, I discovered that the burn tool would not work, no matter how i adjusted its settings. I also found out that the image was in Greyscale mode, which I manually changed to RGB mode. I hadnt changed it to Greyscale mode so I dont know how it came to be that way. I wonder if there is another mode it needs to be in for the burn tool to work?
Another point, once i changed it to RGB mode, i tried the burn tool on another color and it was working. It will not work on the gray part of the image im working with. Really not sure why that is...

It seems that the transparency was the problem, somehow.
I saved the file as a JPG and re-opened it in Photoshop, and the burn tool worked.
    bah.
    Thanks though.

  • Can I restore my system from install discs when DVD is not working?

Can I restore my system from install discs when DVD is not working?
There is a disc jammed in the drive and when I try to do an install in Target Firewire mode using a G5 Tower I get an error saying the software cannot be installed on this machine, before I can even select the iMac's drive. I'm using the grey software install discs that came with the iMac.
Is my only option to open up the iMac and get the jammed disc out?
    Thanks

Problem solved - I posted on the general Tiger Discussions as well.
I had the wrong machine started in Target Firewire mode.

  • Optical DVD drive not working properly: HP notebook g61

Game disks and dvd movie disks not working consistently. Sometimes detected as empty dvd disk and asks if I want to burn to the disk. Other times does not read that there is a disk in the drive. Computer is about one month old. On one of my game disks, I have to reinsert 4 or 5 times before it will read properly. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you use the disk drive a lot. Before we panic and recommend a new drive, try a DVD lens cleaner you can pick up at any place that sells a lot of DVDs, like even WalMart. Run the cleaner disk and see if that helps.

  • Macbook-DVD Rom not working

My Macbook Dvd rom has stopped working. It is not reading any DVDs or CDs. When I insert a DVD it tries to read it but after a minute or two it spits it out. I don't know what the problem is? Even though the system profiler shows it working fine and also the disk utility. On vista side it is the same problem. Please advise what I should do?

    Hi,
You could order a replacement drive and install the drive yourself. You can Google search for MacBook optical drives and find suppliers. Probably the best do-it-yourself directions for working on your MacBook can be found at http://www.ifixit.com. It is not too difficult as long as you have a good set of miniature screwdrivers and tweezers or needle nose pliers. Expect to spend between $50 and $200 depending on the drive speed rating and vendor from whom you purchase a SuperDrive.
If you don't need to burn DVDs, you could replace the SuperDrive with a Combo Drive, which seems to be a much more rugged device.
The final option is to simply disregard the internal drive and use an external device. As long as you are running OS X 10.4.2 or newer, most external CD/DVD burners are suported without needing to use additional software. If you purchase a well known brand, it should be OK. I have an internal Combo Drive and use an external Sony DRU-120A, and it works well. I recommend checking on Google to verify OS X support before purchasing an external drive.
    Best wishes,
    Bill

  • DVD Player Not Working - Need Help Please!

My eMac is currently not reading DVDs. The drive will recognize and automatically play commercial music CDs and software, as well as burned music CDs. However, when a commercial DVD is inserted into a drive, not only will the DVD player not recognize or play it, the eMac does not even notice that there is a DVD in the disk drive.
Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    hi there--
there are a number of things for you to try. one is to do a pmu reset. instructions are found in step 6 of this article. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=34885 if you have an ati graphics emac or later, then the pmu button is on the right side, not the left. if that doesn't work, then try resetting the firmware. boot to open firmware by holding apple-option-o-f and then type in the following commands--
    reset-nvram (hit return)
    set-defaults (hit return)
    reset-all (hit return)
the last command will restart the computer. if neither of those things works, then i would try booting to the install disk and running disk utility. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 if that fails, then i would create a test user (system preferences > accounts, then hit the plus sign) and see if there is any difference there. let me know how that is going for you. • Audio CD burn in iTunes not working

Has anyone had this issue? My Superdrive seems to work fine reading and burning DVDs and data CDs, but burning an audio CD leaves nothing but heavy hiss and rumble.
I've tried telling the burn to burn at 4x speed, 8x speed and maximum, no difference; I've used Verbatim CD-R and Maxell CD-R, no difference.
The Superdrive is a Matshita UJ-846. In iTunes prefs, I have Importing set at MP3 encode and lowered the sample rate from 192 kbps to 160 (but that should not affect the burn anyway, correct?).
I've posted this in the appropriate iMac discussion group as well.
    Any suggestions appreciated, and thanks.

Aell, I answered my own problem. I remembered back to the old Macs I have used and thought about one common resolution to problems...for misbehaving apps, delete the preferences file then relaunch to rebuild the file. For Tiger, preferences are plists.
That solved the problem and all is well once again!

  • Burned DVDs will no work with PC

My PC reads all other DVDs fine. My burned DVD I made with iDVD plays fine on my MAC and also plays fine in regular DVD players. However, my PC won't even recognize my iDVD-made disc. I also tried it on a friends PC, same thing, won't even recognize it. It's like it's not even there. Does apple just rig everything not to work with PC or what is the deal?

No it's not "rigged". Nor is apple proprietary in this regard. Keep in mind the PC must have a drive capable of reading a DVD-R, and the software necessary to play and decode MPEG2.
Most macs will read and play Dvd's straight out of the box. Not always the case for most PC's. Real Player and Windows Media Player won't necessarily play DVDs unless there is an MPEG2 codec present in the system. I searched this topic over the internet and found what I think is a relatively good answer in spite of the fact the title of the article is misleading since there is no such software as "iDVD HD". At least not to the best of my knowledge (unlike "iMovie HD").
