Burning dvd's (Toast alternatives)

I'm still using Roxio Toast 8 to burn audio cd's, data disks and dvd's. The last one by burning a Video_TS folder. Toast 8 still works, but for example the progress window is now blank so I can't see what's going on. Toast 8 is to old to update. So I'm looking for an alternative. Any AppStore apps which do the same thing I do when using Toast? So: burning audio CD's, data CD's, copy discs, creating DVD's from video files and burning a Video_TS folder to work as a DVD?

The size of your pre-encoded video files is moot. iDVD will convert your files to mpeg-2 in order to burn the DVD, and when it does so all it cares about is run-length.
Depending upon your iDVD settings, you can fit up to 2 hours on a single-layer DVD. Be aware that that also includes menus and other resources that are in your iDVD project.

  • Burned DVD in Toast 9 will not play in DVD Player

I used Toast 9 to burn a DVD from a Video_TS folder. The DVD plays fine on my Mac, but will not work on any other DVD Player. The Video is in PAL format and I am using a DL DVD - any suggestions??

Since I don't know what region you are in, it's hard to answer but if you are in the USA then you can't play PAL on most set top DVD Players. You have to have NTSC standard.

  • Maximum length of film to burn DVD on Toast

    Hi Panel
Thanks again for all your help - new question. My film is 1 hr and 20 minutes long - can I burn this at best quality in Toast - or must I keep to 60 minutes? I am in a rush as this film must be ready for Sunday - I can't experiment either as I don't have an individual DVD player - my last effort I had to go up country to view it - thats why I took so long to tell you thanks. When I exported my first project to Quick Time full quality it knocked off the last 4 clips - the movie was only 42 minutes long - but Toast didn't tell me until it reached the end of the burn - than said 4 clips unsupported and DVD failed - you could still play the DVD but the player complained that the DVD had an error on it - don't really like to play the DVD like that in case it harms the player. That is why I am asking your advice. I can remove 12 minutes of movie but it would be a shame - but I'll still be longer than the 60 minutes by 7 minutes.
    Can you advise?
    Many thanks

I was obviously too late to get a reply in time - can u tell me when the group stops for the weekend?
... well.... this is an international board, people in the US are surprised, when I'm answering "in the middle of the night", vice versa I receive a yelling Good Morning form new Zealand, when I post in the middle of MY night... this is a 24/7 forum....
    obviously...
your Q was very... Toast related, you asked in the iM4 section.. Roxio has its own support forum.- give it a try.

  • Help burning DVD w/Toast 7

I'm not able to burn a DVD of a movie w/ iTunes on the soundtrack using Toast 7 on external LaCie burner (no superdrive on my iMac). When I drag the movie into Toast, dialog says 'only apple iTunes can burn data'. I'm 'iTunes authorized' on my iMac so what's up?
    Deano

The quick and dirty way is to burn the iTunes song(s) to CD,
Put the CD Into the drive open iMovie and select the soundtrack off the CD to import into iMovie's timeline at the same position on the timeline as the old soundtrack that you're going to replace.
PS. The iDVD forum can help you with burning an iDVD project or creating an iDVD disk image to burn to an external burner (Superdrive not required) if you're interested.

  • Help! Mac OS X error -39 when burning DVD in toast 8; -36 in Toast 7

iMac just over 1 year old - core duo on 10.4.9. Recently, I've been doing a lot more video work using the super drive. When burning recordings from Eye TV 2.3.3 to Toast 8 using LG DVD-R 1-8x blanks, I had two writes to fail and on the third try I got an error -39 (end of file.) I've not had any problems with these disks writing at 2x speed. I tried a GQ 16x DVD-R, which I had been using, and the write completed, but when playing back with DVD player the disc hung and I got a -36 error stating that disc may be dirty or scratched. My discs are fine. Also, I tried a write to an LG disc using Toast 7 and got a can't write error -36. Is the drive dirty, dusty or failing? The DVD writer is the internal drive that comes with the iMac not an external drive - Thanks for suggestions and help.
If the drive is dirty, how do you clean it without opening the case? Can you put the straw on the air duster through the slot and give it a spray safely? Seems like that would work but probably not recommended by tech support.

Those errors are Mac OS X errors.
    -36 ioErr I/O error (bummers)
-39 eofErr End of file; no additional data in the format
I suspect a defective drive. I've tried three different kinds of DVD blanks including a Sony DVD-R and same problems with all. Time to back up my files and take it in.
BTW - here's a list of all the Mac OS X error codes for those who might want or need them.

I think it would be easier for others to help or giving you suggestion if you can tell in more details regarding the configuration of your system. Such as, is the DVD writer is newly brought? and/or how the DVD writer is connecting to your system (such as whether it is directly connecting to the firewire port of your mac or daisy chained to other firewire device or firewire hub, etc)?

  • Cannot create DVD image or burn DVD on G4 Mac mini (error #-34502)

    Hello!
I'ts pretty strange... I've created some DVD projects with iDVD on my Mac mini (G4, 1.25 GHz, all system updates installed, extra internal DVD burner installed), but I'm not able to burn a DVD neither to save an image file with iDVD. I do always get an error message which includes this error id: #-34502.
However, burning DVDs with Toast or the Finder does work.
There is already a techdoc for this error code, but the described "solution" does not help on my projects. All content is within the tv save area, that cannot be the problem that I'm facing right now.
I've also tried to remove the iDVD caches from ~/Libray/Caches and I've removed the preferences from ~/Library/Preferences. None of these "tricks"
    did solve my problem.
iDVD does always render the content and when it starts to multiplex, this mystic error message appears and the process is stopped.
Does anybody else have an idea or a tip that might help?

more than enough apple stuff   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

The machine was working fine for more than a year. It was running EyeTV all of the time, cutting videos and archiving movies. No problem there ...
I know you're going to find this "unacceptable":
That doesn't mean anything when it comes to RAM and iDVD. iDVD will find any RAM quality weakness. Weakness that even RAM testing software won't find. I've seen it a lot here.
Apple (OEM), Micron (Crucial.com), and Samsung are highly regarded. I even saw a removed Micron solve an encoding problem. Hey, nothing is prefect.

  • Alternatives to Toast for burning DVDs

I have been using Toast for many years with mixed success. Each upgrade seems to hog more resources and sometimes freezes (needing a forced quit). I have tried system maintenance (permissions, scripts, trashing prefences etc) but cannot get it to be reliable.
So ... any recommendations for alternatives. I would like to burn DVDs with EyeTV recordings as well as Apple TV files.

    What version do you have?
I have not had any issues with 10.x standard - the red box, not the blue box.
If you have 10, I know there's a couple of updates for 10.6.x compatibility.
OS X itself will burn data DVDs, but they will not be cross platform.
If you are talking video DVDs, and for whatever reason, you can't get your source video into iMovie, try this (free for a few more days) utility
    http://www.winxdvd.com/giveaway/
It converts nearly any format to any other format(so far, I've used it for wmv, avi, and flv to HD .mov) import the to iMovie, then export to iDVD, and burn your video.

  • Toast 7 and burning DVD's

Hey everyone I just wanted to let you know that I bought Toast 7 and it is by far the best CD/DVD burning software out there. The new stuff they have put on there just makes it worth every penny! One thing I wanted to let you all know though is that if you rip a DVD with MacTheRipper you have to extract the whole thing, not just the main feature for Toast 7 to read it. For more information on burning DVD's check out my site...
And as usual, if you have any questions about anything Mac related feel free to drop me a line.

    Hi
I suggest you try * Creating Disc Image in DVDSP * and burning it with Toast. That way you'll be 100% sure about your disc format.
    Hope that helps !

  • Sense Error burning DVD disc in Toast

    HI there,
I'm trying to burn an ISO (DVD R disc) using Roxio's Toast Titanium and no matter what brand of disc I use, I keep getting "The drive reported an error: Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03.

    thanks in advance

This reply is late, and I hope your issue was solved, but here is what I did when getting the error "Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03" repeatedly when trying to burn a DVD in Toast:
    Researched the web for help.
Ran Disc Utility off of system installer CD to no avail.
Deleted Toast pref file from library – no luck with this.
Wrapped credit card in eyeglass cleaning cloth and inserted several times into SuperDrive (iMac Intel Core Duo machine) – voilà! Successful burning!

  • Finder/Disc Utility/Toast Will Not Burn DVD+R, DVD-R

I have an iMac that will no longer burn DVDs. I've tried various brands of DVD+R, DVD-R and DVD+R DL all of them do not burn in the finder, disc utility, or Toast. CDs burn fine. DVD+R DL discs burned previously with this machine will no longer mount. I just wiped the hard drive and reinstalled OS X and ran all updates and still have the problem.
Media brands tried: OfficeMax, TDK, Maxell, JVC, Sony.
    Thanks in advance!

  • I have created an iMovie file and have created an iDVD menu file. I am now ready to burn a DVD. But my superdirve is broken. If I put my files on a mac without iMovie or iDVD, can I burn my DVD with Toast 11?

I have created an iMovie file and have created an iDVD menu file. I am now ready to burn a DVD. But my superdirve is broken. If I put my files on a mac without iMovie or iDVD, can I still burn my DVD with Toast 11?

    no need for Toast ..
tell iDVD to create a disk-image
    transfer dmg to othe Mac
launch the Disk Utility, burn that dmg .......

  • Painfully slow DVD burning process with Toast .Tips welcome.

Just new to Mac,, and I am going crazy trying to burn/copy a DVD (legally). I do see that it is burning anywhere from 1-3 times rate (no wonder).I give instructions to do it on auto. And if I bring in a file to burn, which is the best type to import to Toast to burn(and less loss of quality)? Should I, or can I replace (upgrade) my 8 X drive (Matshutita?). Any programs (besides Toast)that will handle burning process faster? I used to grab an mpeg file on my PC, and have it burned within 25 minutes tops with TMPGenc for example. I don't think I can handle the slowness.

Even if you have a fully comliant MPEG-2 source, say EYE TV or a VOB file you still have to "author" the DVD with Toast (or DVD Studio Pro for $1000) to build the final DVD in the right format with VIDEO_TS folder, IFO and BUP files that guide the player. Use Toast. Most of the time a compliant MPEG-2 will not re-encode so the process is quite fast. Set the encoding option to "Never". If it needs to be re-encoded it will do that despite the "Never".
Waste of time paying anything to put a new DVD drive in an iMac. Leave it alone and get an external LaCie firewire as I advised already. The authoring time has zero to do with the drive since all the encoding is done by the mac and then you burn the final image to a DVD. A 1X or 20X won't affect the speed.
I just think the internal drives , iMac, MacBook Pro are slow and pokey and a hassle to use and $100-$150 is worth the expense. The D2 drives come with a full version of Toast as well or they did when I bought mine.

  • Has anybody bought toast roxio to burn dvd's using the lion?

Since the new mac OSx lion doesn't have idvd or ilife you can't burn dvd from imovie.  I was wondering if anyone has bought toast roxio for macs to burn dvds.  Would it be worth buying?  Any input would be appreciated.

As a total burning suite, Roxio Toast is excellent and worth every cent. I have been using it for ten years or more and the later releases are super stable and haven't had a disc burning error for a couple of years. A bit limited in themes as babowa mentioned, if that is important to you. But as an overall Mac compatable burner, 5 stars from me. Not cheap, so weigh it up against iLife '11 for your overall needs.
    Good Luck

  • BURN DVD ON DVDSP OR ON TOAST?

I have burned on both DVDSP and TOAST.
IS it better quality to burn directly from DVDSP?
A duplication house told me not sending them DVDs for duplication burned on toast. Is it safer for duplication burning on DVDSP?

    Hi Logic express . . . . . . .:
If you do it right IMHO there is no difference and don't think nobody can find the difference. Problem is you could make some mistakes while burning in Toast (i.e. not selecting the right UDF format).
I found the safest workflow "for me" is building an image disc with DVDSP and burning it with Toast and/or Disk Utility. Check this link: Creating Disc Image in DVDSP (from www.kenstone.net site).
    Hope it helps !
