Burning DVD using iMovie '11

Hi,
How do I burn a DVD that I want to play on my television in iMovie '11?  If that is the wrong program, then what program do I buy in order to do this?
Thank you.

You can use Disk Utility to burn.  Read the OS Help menu for instructions or research Apple Knowledge Base.

To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

Handbrake is not ideal for this.
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

For creating standard-conform disks, you'd need a designated DVD-authoring app.

  • How do I put several DVDs into one DVD using iMovie?

I have made 5-6 small movies over the years using iMovie based on family skits.  They average about 10 minutes each.  I have them all burned to DVDs.  I want to be able to put them all on one DVD instead of having 5-6 separate DVDs.  I thought it would be a simple process to copy each DVD to my computer and then add them and burn to one DVD.  When I duplicate the first DVD, it goes into a folder had has 2 files---neither of which I can open and play.  Then I tried to open iMovie and import the DVD to iMovie.  Can't get that to work.  Then I went to the Disk Utility and was about to create an image of the DVD and did something I'm not sure of which magically at some point imported to the iMovie project I had created for this.  I was able to get this process to work 3 times following the same steps (although I can't tell you why or what I was doing).  But then it just stopped working for the last 3 DVDs even though I did the same thing.  I don't have to use iMovie.  I just want a simple way to combine DVDs into one DVD.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as these are going to be Christmas gifts.  Thanks.

If the iPhone is shown 'full-on' so the video doesn't have to be distorted then you could use 'Picture in Picture' in iMovie.  See: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mova1aaa682b
If, on the other hand you have an oblique view of the iPhone (as is the case in the video you reference) the movie will have to be distorted in order for it to fit the screen of the iPhone in the picture and show the correct perspective.  iMovie doesn't offer this flexibility and you would need to use Final Cut Pro.

  • How to burn DVD in iMovie 10

I've just upgraded to iMovie 10 and cannot figure out how to burn my movie to a DVD. I don't want to share on Vimeo, CNN, etc. I just want a movie for me?
What may I missing? Help, please!

    RuffiansRide,
The manual is not going to help you figure out how to burn a DVD. Apple discontinued iDVD several years ago and no longer supports it and in version 10 of iMovie has removed all references to iDVD or burning DVDs.
That said, iDVD stil works beautifully and remains the best option for creating nice-looking DVDs on a Mac.
You said that everything appears to be uploading to iCloud. Have you tried unchecking "Automatically upload content to iCloud" in iMovie's Preferences?
Here is a step by step on how to create a DVD from iMovie 10 using iDVD 7.1.2. If you do not have iDVD, you can probably substitute Toast everywhere I used iDVD (I don't have Toast so can't verify this).
    1. Create a project in iMovie 10.0.1
    2. Go to File>Share>File... and for Size choose Large 540P (960 x 540) and click Next
    3. Choose a location on the hard drive to save the file to.
    4. Wait for the blue circle activity indicator to finish.
    5. In Finder, verify that iMovie created an MP4 file in the location specified in step 3.
    6. Open iDVD and click "Create New Project."
    7. Give the project a name and save it to your hard drive.
    8. Drag the file you created earlier from the Finder into your iDVD project window.
(or go to File>Import>Video... and choose your video there)
    9. Make any adjustments to drop zones, etc.
    10. Click the burn button.
    11. Insert a DVD and let it do its thing.
This produces a working DVD for me.
    Here are my software specs:
    OS X 10.9 Mavericks
    iMovie 10.0.1
    iDVD 7.1.2

  • Unable to burn DVD with iMovie?

    Am fairly dissapointed with Apple.
I have spent time today creating a short movie of photos of my 2 month old son.
When trying to share with iDVD I have realised that my iLife 11 doesn't come with this software and I can't download it!
I am therefore unable to burn my project to disc and feel I have wasted my time.
In my opinion this seriously reduces the usablility of iMovie.
Is there anyway I can burn the DVD without spending a shed load of cash on some third party software??
    Thanks

I was also disappointed when I bought my Mac and it came without iWeb and iDVD.
For burning DVDs, I use a free app called Burn http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html.
You can't do fancy menus or anything that iDVD can, but at least you can get your iMovie Projects onto a DVD.
You have to export your project from iMovie and then drag the .m4v or .mov file that comes out onto Burn (Make sure the Video tab at the top is selected.
Of course, if you have a MacBook Air, you'll need an external optical drive capable of burning DVDs.

  • New to MAC. How to burn DVD of iMovie

    Hi
    I would in iMovie'08
    • move from Events to a new Project - building a movie
    • Share this to Media Browser
    • Close iMovie
    • Open iDVD
    • Import movie from Media Browser
    • Design the iMovie menu at Your liking
    • Set DVD burn-speed down to x4 or less in iDVD Preferences
    • Set at Pro-Quality encoding
    • Use a Good Quality DVD - I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    • I secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk - so that iDVD runns OK.
    • Save as a DiskImage
    • Test this with Apple DVD-tool
    • If OK - Burn it with iDVD - or Apple Disk Util tool (need no re-calculation)

  • Can't burn dvd of iMovie w/ iTunes soundtrack on external device

Can't burn a DVD-R of file in iMovie 4.0.1 w/ iTunes soundtrack onto external DVD burner (LaCie w/ Toast 7). Prompt tells me I 'only iTunes can burn content'. Using iMac w/ OX 10.3.9 (no superdrive). Wonder if this iMac wont support the external drive or Toast (which I just purchased) since it has no superdrive.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi Dean:
iMovie 4 did not natively support an external burner without the help of this free downloadable script:
BURN DVDS TO AN EXTERNAL BURNER OR A DISK IMAGE WITH iDVD
    Or Patchburn
    Sue
PS You may want to burn the soundtrack to an audio CD and import that to iMovie if it was purchased from itunes.

  • Another "how to create HD DVDs using iMovie" question

I am able to download my  AVCHD footage from my Sony videocam into imovie11 (on my mac mavericks platform)....and am happy enough with using imovie as an editing program for my project.  And when I am done with my "project" imovie delivers to me a MPEG-4 file. It retains HD content (1920X1080p).
My Sony blu-ray player (BDPs350) will not play this file ...(strangely because it plays everything else)... so my question is what is the best (and lowest cost) way to create an avchd dvd of my project which will play in my Blu-ray player (and not suffer much degradation). My Sony PMB software did a great job in the past, but it is not available for Mac. I am on the verge of buying Toast and "hoping" it will work but their customer service was not reassurring when I talked to them recently. Will Toast 11 do the job?

    Yes and I said that
Roxio Toast - INCLUDING BD-Component can burn to both DVD and if You got a BD-Burner to Blu-Ray disks.
    BUT
DVDs are 4.2-4.7Gb and BD-disks 24Gb (If I remember rigth) - Meaning that You only can put about 20 minutes movie on a SL-DVD.
This BD-DVD - can only be played on Blu-Ray players (no standard DVD-player playback these. Not even Your Mac unless it got a special program that can do this (but to playback true BD-disks a dedicated BD-player is a must)
AND - My BD-DVDs play back greatly on my PlayStation3 - BUT NOT ON some Cheap Samsung BD-players !
    Do not know why.
    I use:
    - Verbatim
    - DVD-R
    - SLOW BURN speed !
And to me Roxio Toast Bundle was great value - especially Spin-doctor - as I have old vinyls and sounding bad - some sounded as brand new after processing in this. (and lot's more - back-conversion of DVDs, file conversion etc)

  • Xvid to DVD using iMovie

I have an Xvid file of a TV show I'd like to burn to DVD. Is that possible using iMovie? If so, how is it done?

But how do I make sure that the movie is resize properly to fit the entire width of the screen?
One thing though. I selected letterbox when I made the conversion from QT Pro,
Would this account for the black bars at the sides of the screen?

  • Can anyone recommend an application to burn DVDs from iMovie, I have a MacPro.

I am looking for a reliable application to burn DVD's from iMovie, apple used to have iDVD but I can't find it on their website, any response will be greatly appreciated, Thank you!

You can still buy iLife DVDs and install (then update, then update...) iDVD.  iDVD still works with Mavericks.

  • Burned DVD to iMovie?

I am trying to go from burned DVD of our practice to iMovie, so I can edit it in iMovie. But for some reason, it will not allow me to import it. I have done it before by going to Disk Utility and then getting the New Image. Is there a setting I need to have it on once I get to that part? Or what is another way if getting it on to iMovie? Like I said, I have done it before but am trying to figure out why it is not letting me now all of a sudden.

You need to convert the VOB files on the DVD to a format such as DV. MPEG Streamclip and Apple's MPEG-2 playback component will do this on unprotected DVDs.
