Burning DVD with AVCHD format on Final Cut Express

Anyone knows how to export the edited file in the highest/closest quality of AVCHD on a DVD media? I tried all output and it seems the AVCHD quality is still superior when played in my Sony BD350 Blu-ray player. Thanks!

Hi(Bonjour)!
Here's my workflow to produce Blu-ray format DVD:
I shoot in HDV and edit into a 1080i60 AIC sequence. This process should work with AVCHD too.
Save the movie to quicktime. No conversion.
Drop the movie into toast with the HD plugin installed...(Toast 10 is available now)
http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/plugin/overview.html
I burn a maximum of 20 minutes on a single layer DVD at 1080p in blu-ray tab in toast on my G5 2.3 dual 4.5 Go Ram, dual layer factory installed DVD burner.
Sorry, in my tests, menus are designed by roxio and there is issue with them and the looping feature, so I stay with the autoplay no menu. The latest PS3 firmware update may solve this issue.
I play the blu-ray DVD on a Playstation 3 perfectly.
You can also burn DiVX format in toast, but the res is limited to 720p. I encountered some playback problems with this format, but it is okay on PS3.
See those link about Blu-Ray authoring, they give a general idea on the workflow and option for BR burners and players:

  • Need help with editing AVCHD files in Final Cut Express 4

The AVCHD files were recorded on a Canon HG10 before I bought a Mac Pro OS X 15.1.
I transfered them to a file on my desktop, like the instructions tell me to do, but when I get to the part of "mount the media files in the log and transfer", I get stuck.
The file is named AVCHD and when I try to upload it into the Log and Transfer window through the little plus sign on the left hand top corner, I get the following message:
"AVCHD" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media."
It does not allow me to import the files individually. I tried dragging the files to where it says "Drag media here" and nothing happens. If I try to drag the file to the area in the top left corner of log and transfer, I get the same message as above.
What do I need to do?

I have a different camcorder, but my experience might be of help to you.
I have a Sony HDR-UX1 AVCHD camcorder that records to 8cm DVDs.
I tried using Apple Final Cut Express 4's FILE > LOG AND TRANSFER command to capture directly from the 8cm DVD, which resided in an external Sony DVD drive... and I was not successful.
Then, I remembered my experience on Windows XP where I used Corel's Ulead VideoStudio 11 Plus.
With Ulead VideoStudio 11 Plus, I found I had to drag the contents of removable media discs and disks to my Windows desktop, which then allowed me to use the software video capture tools successfully.
So I tried the same thing with Apple Final Cut Express 4.
I dragged the BDMV FOLDER on my 8cm AVCHD disc to my Mac's desktop.
I then used the FILE > LOG AND TRANSFER command and simply browsed to the folder on the desktop and -- Voila! -- the contents of the folder appeared as video thumbnails in the LOG AND TRANSFER WINDOW and everything worked.
    Hope this helps,

  • Backup AVCHD Camcorder using Final Cut Express

I have previously used Final Cut Express to create a backup copy of all the video on my AVCHD Hard Drive Camcorder. However, since that time, I had to reinstall Final Cut Express. I can no longer remember or find how to do this again. Can someone please help? Did apple remove this functionality?

I just purchased FCE 4 with a new iMac but haven't used it yet. But I do know that iMovie '09 has an Archive feature that will do what you are looking for. It copies the contents of the camera in it's original Full HD format to the hard drive. I do this then import the video to iMovie using the compressed file type. With the original on the hard drive, you can always re-import to iMovie '09 (and FCE 4, I presume) if you want to use the Full HD original format at a later date.

  • Is iDVD compatible with quicktime movies from Final Cut Express 4?

I am trying to find out if iDBD can be used with Final Cut Express 4 output or is it just for imovie?  If it can be used with FCE4 what is the extension.  Thank you.

    Hi
Yes - IF YOU DO IT RIGHT.
    FCE/P to iDVD
    Several things
    • How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding
    • Brand and type of DVDs used
    • Burn speed set
    • iDVD BUG
    • Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    Burn speed set
    • I set down this to x4 (or x1)
    iDVD BUG
    • One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
    of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
    Material used to build movie
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this eg .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Trash iDVD pref. file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

  • Capturing AVCHD straight to Final cut express

I have a Canon vixia HF10 camera that films in AVCHD. Mostly i have been importing to IMovie but I am trying to learn how to capture it straight into Final Cut Express. Any Help with how i can import the AVCHD files?

    Hi,
You need to plug in your camera to your Mac, turn on the camera, and then go to the Log and Transfer window under the File menu. Your camera will show up there with all your individual files. You can select which one (or even parts of the files) you want to import. It's pretty easy; I have the same camera. Bear in mind, you need to have shot your material in FXP (the highest quality HD) in order for FCE to import it (at least, that's what I've read, and I haven't bothered to test the lower quality stuff for importing). Hope this helps.

  • Importing Video Files from DVD and the net onto final cut express 4

    2 questions:
1st: Ive imported a video file downloaded from the net to practice editing, but once I have done that, the video file has no audio? how do I get the audio for those files?
2nd: I had ripped some video files from my university film project onto my laptop, but I cant Import the files into final cut express to further edit it (because it was a group project), because its the wrong format and stuff. How do I fix this and allow it to be imported?
    Any help is greatly appreciated
    Cheers

ohk cool, wat about my first problem with the sound not being imported?
Most likely the file is multiplexed. That means the audio and video are rolled into one. Same thing applies as the other post, the file needs to be in a format that FCE recognizes. Streamclip may do it, depending on the type of file of course.

  • What video formats does Final Cut Express support?

I have Final Cut Express HD 3.5. What video formats are compatible with this program? Also, what frame rate and aspect ratio do my videos have to be in for Express to accept the video file?

Good of you to have read the manual. It helps us answer the question now that you've included that information.
Your material must be converted to either DV, HDV or AIC (FCE Native formats). As you have discovered, while FCE will accept a number of non-standard or native formats, it will not play happily with them.
DV and HDV are anamorphic formats. That is, they use non-square pixels. Standard DV is 720x480 (a 3:2 ratio) that FCE will do the conversion magic and have is display in a 4:3 format. Widescreen DV (aka 16:9) is ALSO 720x480 but the narrow dimension of the pixel is oriented the other way. When you tell FCE that the file is 16:9 anamorphic, it will do the magic and display the material properly. If you do not, it will display as though it is standard definition 4:3 and the people will be much skinnier but not taller.
HDV is 1440x720 but displays in 16:9.
AIC can be 1280x720 or 1980x1080.
All other dimensions are not supported and you may have very unreliable results when using them. This very limited abiltiy to deal with more than a couple of formats was one of the main differentiation points between Express and Final Cut Pro. There were a great number of other differences but this was one of the biggest limitations for most consumer level users.
If you want to edit a lot of non-standard,  non-native formats, look into Final Cut Pro X or Adobe Premiere Pro. Premiere Pro is within the editing paradigm of Final Cut Pro/Express. Final Cut Pro X has gone in a different direction which involves a new learning curve. Don't be fooled by the name, it is a very different animal than Express.

  • Why is AVCHD distorted in Final Cut Express

I inported AVCHD into Final Cut Express using the recommended HDV Apple Internediate codec but my clips appear way overexposed and pixelated.  They look great when I hook the camera up to a TV though.

Thanks for your help.   I have used HDV for years with good success.  This is my first AVCHD project though.

  • Avchd video to final cut express

I was able to import the video from my Sony high definition hdr-sr11"AVCHD" video to my apple computers desktop. I cannot import the video that is now on my computer to final cut express. I am new to computers and do not have any idea how to do this. I have been playing around for hours but cannot get it to load. I really need to learn how to load the video. My son’s basketball games are starting and I would love to record them. I would appreciate some help more than you will ever know. I’m lost

Load directly from the camera into the computer using FCE. Do not copy the media off the hard drive onto the computer. In FCE use the log and transfer function. Read about it in the manual.

  • Needing Intel-Mac for AVCHD feature in Final Cut Express?

Hi, I was about to install Final Cut Express 4 when I noticed a tiny warning saying that the AVCHD required Intel-chip Mac. that seems crazy so I'm hoping someone can tell me it's not true???
I have an older imac (2004 or 2005), definitely not an Intel, and I need the AVCHD to import from my camcorder, Canon Vixia HF20, in fact the AVCHD is the only reason I'm considering "upgrading" to Express 4 (I currently have Final Cut Studio 5.0.4) I am also open to alternative suggestions besides FPX such as imovie if you know it works. I only have imovieHD 5.0.2 and was able to mount camera but see only jpgs, no movies. please help!!!

there IS an option for nonIntels.. :
Voltaic, http://www.shedworx.com/voltaichd , 35$, which allows a 'manual' conversion of such codecs on your hardware.. timeconsuming, slow (=conversion process, editing no problem), less convenient..
.. you get older Intel MacMinis 'cheap'..

  • Sony DCR-TRV140 with Macbook Pro and Final Cut Express 4

OK all, I'm a Mac novice here. Just bought my first Mac last month and added Final Cut Express to it in order to have some nice advanced features when it comes time to edit all kinds of home video shot on the Sony DCR-TRV140 Digital8 Handycam...
But I'm having trouble figuring out how to get my MacBook Pro to recognize the camcorder.
I have a 4-pin firewire connector on the camcorder, and a 9 pin firewire connector on the Mac. Is it as easy as buying a 4/9 pin cable?
I thought about trying to hook it up through the USB cable... but haven't had any luck there either.
As you can tell, I'm quite new to this, so please be nice. Ha!
If I can provide any further information, please let me know.
Specifications for the Sony camcorder can be found here:

Is it as easy as buying a 4/9 pin cable?
    Pretty much.
Hello and welcome to the forum.
Here's one source of such a cable:

I'm not sure what Easy Setup you'll need to use in FCE, but, if you're in the USA, I think it will be DV-NTSC DV Converter or maybe DV-NTSC Firewire Basic.

  • AVCHD footage and Final Cut Express 4

Can somebody tell me how to transfer 1080/60i footage recorded with a Panasonic AG-HMC40P in Final Cut Exptess? Please try to explain  step by step in easy language because I'm a bit of a moron when it comes to computers I'll also mix this footage with the SD video recorded in DVCAM format on cassette with a SonyDVCAM. What kind of setup would you think is the best for minimum hassle? My MacBook Pro is one of the first ones with only 2GB of RAM! Cheers

  • Is there a problem with USB speakers and Final Cut Express HD?

I have audio only through my internal speaker for Final Cut - however all other sounds play through my USB Harman Kardon speakers fine.
I have tried sending the audio out to my M-Audio head too - and that has been fruitless.
I am really frustrated - I reinstalled the OS. And ran it with only Final Cut and the OS and still have the same issues. Even if I drag an MP3 into Final Cut it plays through the internal speaker. I also notice that the audio really lags behind the video when it plays through the internal speaker - if that means anything. I have made sure that the Canvas Setting is correct.
Tech support for the most part has been nice, but they are unable to help me.
Please help!!!! And thanks in advance.

Sorry, no actual experience with USB Audio devices.
I found this in the Pro forum, but the outlook doesn't seem good:

  • How to convert a DVD disc for use in Final Cut Express 3.5

I have a DVD disc of a conference which I would like to edit in FCE 3.5.
I would like to be able to import it into my FCE project, ad use it without having to the render it in FCE.
Is it possible to rip or import the disc (with Handbrake?) and then export the resulting file so it can be used in FCE. I am especially keen that when the file is imported, it doesn't have to then be rendered. I have had a number of problems with QuickTime files being imported to FCE where they then need to be rendered in the timeline before I can use them.
If anyone can suggest the following I would be very appreciative:
1/ how to import the DVD disc- Handbrake?- what settings are best to use? MPEG4, H.264...
2/ once imported to my Mac Pro, how do I convert it for easy use in FCE.
Just to show you that I did try this before posting to this forum, I tried the following:
    1/ imported as a h.264 file with Handbrake (2hr video created a 2GB file)
2/ opened this file in an app called "MPEG Streamclip" and exported the file as a QuickTime file, and set as "Apple DV".
3/ BUT... the resulting file reached 17GB and then when imported to FCE, it couldn't be played in the timeline until I rendered it first- I didn't start this as it would have taken hours and hours!!
Any help or tips would be great
    Thanks,
    Simon

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    VisualHub (23.32$)
    Drop2DV (free)
    Cinematize >60$
    Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
