Burning dvds on Imac os 10.8?

I was surprised my brand new iMac with the Mountain Lion os does not have a dvd burning app.  My 7-year-old iMac G5 includes iDVD.  Is this progress?  I talked to 3 people at Apple Care, each of whom told me I could probably buy a 3rd party dvd burner, but would give no recommendations.  Anyone have suggestions?

I was surprised my brand new iMac with the Mountain Lion os does not have a dvd burning app.
I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, and others.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD.
If you are still within your 15 day return period.  Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.  (There are no realistic substitutes.)
Nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD. That usually does the trick.  You MUST speak to a senior advisor to get a free copy. The first tier people cannot do it.

If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

If you want to create a video DVD you'll need iDVD.  If you Mac didn't come with iDVD preinstalled then you'll have to purchase it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

  • Unable to burn DVDs on iMac. Folders dragged to DVD window appear as documents. DVDs from same package burned OK last year. Using Lion. CDs burn OK.

Unable to burn DVDs on 2009 iMac ( Lion ). Folders and any files dragged to DVD window appear as blank documents.
Burned DVDs from same package ( Memorex ) last year OK. CDs burn OK. DVDs are several years old, if that matters.

The music is a tune that was purchased/downloaded from the iTune store. The slide shows (five of them) consist of digital photos (jpg) that I have taken. The interesting thing is that I also have an eMac (about three years old) that I have created the same iDVD project (identical music & identical slide shows). I have been able to burn a DVD disk of this project on my eMac WITHOUT A PROBLEM. The thing I do not like about the eMac is that I purchased family pack of iLife 6 last year (because I liked some of the new Themes). However, when I installed it on my eMac, for some reason it takes about 5-10 minutes to get iDVD 6 "up and running." Once it has loaded the Themes, however, I am "good to go." I've had this computer into the "Genius Bar" at the local area Apple Store TWICE and they are unable to get it to work more efficiently. The even reinstalled the entire operating system to no avail. So, the solution is to launch iDVD 6 on my eMac and then go do something else for 5-10 minutes. But at least I am able to burn my iDVD projects to DVDs.
With my iMac, iDVD launches quickly but is useless since I am unable to burn my iDVD slide show projects to DVD.
So, as a result, I am pretty much ready to "call it a day" with the iMac and will go back to my eMac.
    Thanks for your time.

  • Burned DVD on iMac, but it will only playback on Microsoft, not on iMac

I have burned a Philips DVD+RW on iMac and it will not play back on DVD Player, which says "Supported disc not available". However, the DVD plays back without any difficulty on Microsoft LapTop. Any ideas what the problem may be?

Can you start the Editor or Organizer from Launch Pad?
Can you see the application correctly installed from Finder:

  • Burning DVD on iMac G5

I have an pre Intel iMac G5 and tried 6 times to burn a DVD using iDVD5, the default is the internal G5 burner, I upgraded to iDVD6 which fortunatelly has the option to burn on another DVD burner which in turn was successful. What should I do if the extrnal is not avaliable? I need to rectefy the problem on the iMac G5 should it go into the shop it is only 3 months old. It plays dvd's, music video and VD fine.

Are you using known high quality media?
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia
Are you burning at the slowest speed possible?
Is the media prepackaged in jewelcase and has nothing written by you or stuck to its label?
Is the label side facing you when you put the disk in?
When you open Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info, under hardware's disk burning, what supported formats do you have, and is your media matching that format?

  • Can't burn DVD on imac

My work iMac (27-inch 2.7GHz running OSX Lion) has a problem writing DVDs. It's only a couple of weeks old.
I insert blank DVD, it appears on the desktop, drop a folder on icon ready to burn, then nothing.
Tried dragging it to wastebasket, control clicking and just using burn on the icon but nothing's working.
I'm trying to backup a month's worth of artwork so there are many sub folders (30+) in that month titled with client's name and invoice no.
Inside each folder is indesign files, links, pdfs etc.
Is it something to do with filenames in folder?
There was one sub folder inside the main folder with a red circle and a minus sign through it bottom right so removed it but didn't help.
    Any suggestions please?

    Hi..
If there is a problem with filenames etc. you could try to compress the folder you are burning befor dropping it in the burnfolder. That way you can rule out hardware error. Or try burning some other file.
If other files and compressed folder burns ok, then you have to look for the error in the files you are trying to burn.
And, you are using a supported media right ?

  • I repeatedly get "error during rendering/encoding of menus/slideshow" message.  This process is the same on my iMac, MacBook and another iMac.  I have been burning dvd's int he same way for the past 12 months using the exact same steps successfully.

I keep getting "error during rendering/encoding of menus/slideshows" message.  I have been burning DVD's in exactly the same way for the past 12 months and mostly on my MacBook which is 3 years old.  Obviously I'm using iDVD.  I purchased an iMac about a year ago and moved to use this for dvd burning without problem.  A few months ago (approximately) I started to experience problems with burning with the error message above.  I tried everything including starting the whole process from scratch right down to capturing the movie clips from my video recorder into iMovie, then using them in iDVD.  Still the same message came up.  I lost count of how many times I repeated the process with different clips and variations and the same thing happened.  This was also the case with my MacBook and my husband's iMac.
After taking both of mymac's tothe service centre, having new optical thingys put it and even a new hard drive on my iMac along with a new DVD burner the same thing happened.  They told me it must be the process that I am using that is incorrect!
I took my 27" iMac to an apple shop and asked them to assist me while I use the same technique as I always had.  The same message came up so they tried using my clips in one of their mac's.  The same message. They tried it with different clips and the same message.  The only way we could get theirs to work was with a magic DVD which did not produce what I needed and was limited with only one page.
I now cannot use any of my Mac's for the intended purpose that I bought them for - to produce good media for my work!  It was suggested that I purchase some non Mac software to burn DVDs which defeats the object of having a mac with iDVD in my opinion.  I have a book on iDVD which is very informative and have followed the process to the letter and checked all the trouble shooting and still no remedy.  It was mentioned that an up-date may have caused the problem on all my macs.
I feel that this issue should be addressed by Apple as a matter of correctness.
I now find that on the net there are many posts in forums and such like with exactly the same (almost word for word) problems.  Please Apple, keep/regain your good name and sort this out.

Thanks Bengt W for your attention to this matter.  So much appreciated.  And thanks for putting me right on the aim of forums (new to this).  Although, you may regret asking for more information.  I've added everything I can below.
The process I used is as follows:
Import recorded clips of between 5 and 15minutes each from my video recorder into i
Edit the clips (remove unwanted start and endng)
Add title to front of clips
‘Share’ them to ‘movie’ (export using QuickTime)folder in .mov format individually
Open iDVD and ‘create new project’
Select ‘favourite’ theme that I have set up forall my work dvd’s (this has been used successfully many times and I’ve triedwithout using the favourite them).
Add 2 submenus for each group of clips
Select submenu  - drag and drop between 3 – 6 clips in each of the twosubmenus
    Change title colours on clips
Dragand drop image into drop zones where required
In‘map’ view I check for any yellow warnings before burning to disc
In an attempt to remedy the problems I’ve tried the following:
    Try new DVD discs
Try different themes (favourites and standardones)
    Change images in drop zones
Start whole process again even from importingfrom camera again
Two other completely different computers (iMacand MacBook) with iDVD
Go to apple shop and use their computers to doin iDVD
Try with one clip and no menu pages added
Use a clip that I already have that did notoriginate from my camera
    Turn computer off and restart
    New hard drive
    New optical lense (thing)
    New DVD burner
Saving to disc image rather than dvd disc
    Other points:
I also have a ‘flip’ and ‘iPhone’ whereI’ve imported footage camera which, although limited, records and makes videoclips and burns them to DVD through iDVD without problem.
For example, I have just gone through steps 5 - 11 using some clips that were already imported from my iphone to iPhoto and dragged across.  I used a theme that I've used before which has failed and added one sub menu page where the clip went.  It burned to disc image successfully.
The startup disc, I believe will have no space issues asit’s a new hard drive with no use apart from this.  That could have been an issue before (I didn’t check it) butnot now.
Other technical stuff that I don't understand but you may:

  • I was having problems burning DVDs' fro iDVD and it turned out my burner is at fault I have a 27 inch iMac using a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H. Where can I buy a replacement in UK?

I was having problems burning DVDs' from iDVD and it turned out my burner is at fault.
I have a 27 inch iMac using a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H. Where can I buy a replacement in UK? I have seen these with SATA is this the correct cable for my mac?
I have also tried the Mac superdrive but my imac wont recognise it as it's been configured for macbook air and mini mac. I know I can "make" it work by doing something or other in com.apple/plist, but dont want to mess about in there.
I'm also told an external drive would work but does "mac compatible" mean only for air and mini as their own superdrive is or all macs?
Any help appreciated before I convince myself mac is no better than windows pc!

Thanks but this didn't really help.
I can buy the drives at a dozen places but none of them seem to know what connection is correct (SATA etc) and that includes the apple store. It was the store who told me buy the superdrive and all my problems would be over. Wrong! It isn't recognised by imac as it's confifured for air and mini mac. Only way to make it work is as i said in earlier post. (Would you be happy buying a car you were told would start and then discover you have to open the bottome and fiddle to make it go?)
The apple store I would not even consider taking it to. Days without the pc, over priced and don't have a good reputation for actually fixing things!
    But thanks

After you plug an Apple USB SuperDrive into an iMac, what must you do to view or to burn DVD videos?

Mac mini (late 2009) and later

  • Why can't my iMac see contents of discs or burn DVDs?

Contents of DVDs don't appear and I cannot burn DVDs.
About two months ago I became unable to burn a DVD.
One month ago I became unable to see the contents of DVDs, though my iMac can recognize and read an audio CD..
I've tried accessing information from commercial as well as Sony DVD-R 16X discs made by a friend using his iMac—to see if my friend's discs were blank, we opened them in his iMac and found all the programs; I tried again on my iMac and still can't see any content.
I have repaired permissions using Disc Utility, but the problems were not solved.
Discs appear on the desktop as "Untitled DVD".  When I open "Disc Utility", the discs themselves do not show up, and the image for "SuperDrive" seems greyed out; still, when I select "SuperDrive" I can get "Info" and instructions for erasing a disk.
I was advised to open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new administrative account, then log out & into the new account; but the problems were not solved.

    Hi Babowa,
I inserted my friend's DVD (proven to have content), saw the iMac could see no content, then went to: Apple > about this Mac > more info > System Report > Disc Burning and got the report below which says the disc is blank:

i bough a new imac, this haven't dvd burner, i bought a external dvd burner but the imac havent a idvd and i need this program, no other one, how to download this and install?

    Hi
how to download this and install?
There are no free DownLoads !
There are no legal DownLoads at all !
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

  • Burned DVD only works on my iMac

I've just finished a project on my iDVD 5, then inserted the DVD on my Pioneer DVD player, the burned DVD works, but incorrectly, the screen is like jumping, the sound is ok and also the buttons, after I select a movie I can view it, but still with the screen jumping over and over again..... so I ejected the DVD from my player and the Pioneer screen still jumps, with no DVD on it, after I insert a non-burned one, then it looks normally again. Then tryed the same burned DVD on my iMac and it works correctly, no problems on the display or anything else, what would it be? may it be a problem with the burned format or my DVD player?
The DVD I used to burn this project is a Samsung DVD+RW 4x...

    Samsung DVD+RW 4x...
Try another brand of blank DVD-R, I like Verbatim.
I avoid DVD+RW, the compatibilty is much worse than DVD-R, and since DVD-R is so cheap, it's hard to justify using DVD+RW in any case if you value your time. After all you have to erase it (time) it burns slower (more time) and it's bound to give you more problems (more time).
My bet is a good blank DVD-R disk will solve your problem.....
    John B,

  • I have a iMac - when I burn dvd of my home movies it does not play on other dvd players

When i burn a dvd on my imac - it does not play on other dvd players

    Buy iDVD on Disk.
Yes, there are other programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, DVD Creator, Wondershare, and others.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie.
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/idvd.html
With iDVD you can easily and quickly create DVDs with menus and graphics almost on the level of what Hollywood can do.
IDVD is easy to get. It is available on disk as part of iLife 11.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.  (works with all Mac OS 10.5 and newer.)

  • Can iMac burn DVDs playable on other DVD players?

I have a NON-Copyrighted DVD that I need to duplicate. This is a basic DVD, created by my son's school PTA for a school presentation, that will play on any DVD player. I have followed the online steps to create an image using Disk Utility (with DVD/CD Master), then burn the image onto a blank DVD. This newly burned DVD will play only on the iMac - it will not play on any other DVD player. Is the iMac capable of duplicating DVD that will play on any DVD player?

    Hi again Steve,
    SteveLasher wrote:
Thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions. I'm really just shaking my head here. I bought this Mac hoping things like this would be easier than on my old PC, but I hate to say I am really regretting ever getting this thing.
Hey, no problem... a pleasure, as always.
With regards to any regrets you may have in getting a Mac, I, nor anyone else here, can help you with that decision.
Your symptoms are genuine and are regrettable. I could repeat what I stated in my last post; that DVDs burned using DU work for me whether played on my Mac or on a DVD player for viewing on the telly. That would not help you though as your experience is different.
What I will suggest is that you do what is right for you and your needs. If that means selling your Mac and going back to a PC, so be it.
I am curious though. When, before you got a Mac and you used a PC to burn DVDs, did you use MS Windows in-built burning software (is there such a thing?) or did you use a third party utility like Nero. If you used something like Nero, then that's no different to investing in Roxio Toast for the Mac.
Regardless, I genuinely do regret that your experience with your new Mac isn't up to the standards that you expected. I could suggest many advantages for using a Mac (as, indeed, many others here can) but the decision is yours. You do have a great computer there so it's up to you.
