Burning home movies for use on a regular DVD player

Can anyone recommend software, preferably free, I can use to convert avi home movies to be able to be viewed on a standard DVD player? I have dvd-r disks, just not sure on what settings or software to use in order to burn them.
Thank you.

Yes, but iDVD originally came with your Mac if you've purchased it in the past five years or so; that version should still work, but if it's missing you would need to reinstall it from the Software Restore disc that originally shipped with your Mac, not a Mac OS X install disc.

  • Importing home movies from my IMac's internal DVD player

I've been reading some of the posts which I think are related to my question and it looks like this is going to be complicated. I have some home movies on a DVD. The files on the DVD are grouped into two folders labeled "Audio-TS" and "Video-TS." In the audio folder there are no files and in the video folder there are a number of files with names such as "VTS010.IFO" or "VTS010.BUP" or VTS011.V0B" etc. I've downloaded free software called "mpegstramclip" and I've purchased from Apple a program called "MPEG2." Am I on the right track in my efforts to import these home movies into IMovie HD so I can edit them?

Thank you Karstein and please excuse the double post. My first post was on the IMovie HD6 page and I meant to post it on the IMovie HD page. I'm going to try to tackle this project using the tools you have given me so wish me luck.

  • Burned DVD movies skip/freeze on regular DVD player

I've made a few home movies, and burned them on to DVDs. When I play them on a regular DVD player (Sony), the movie skips/freezes from time to time. I've burned the same movie on my other MacBook, and this does not happen.
Could it be that the SuperDrive on this MacBook is broken?

    Hi,
I would take a look at the following:
    1. Try a different brand blank DVD medium when you burn the disc. Set top players seem to be a lot more sensitive to the brand of disc than computers.
    2. Burn the iDVD project to an image file. Share the image file over to another Mac and burn it there. See if you still have problems with playback.
    3. If you still had problems with an image file burned on a different computer, then you know it must be something in the data format of the disc. I've experienced problems with some set top DVD playback machines that can not handle sustained high bit rate content. As far as I know, iDVD uses a relatively simple encoding strategy, and does not do much to reduce the information content of the encoded video stream. If you start with a high resolution QuickTime or DVI import, playback machines with limited disc performance might not be able to keep up.
I did some fairly superficial Google searches and looked at iDVD, and I didn't see any means of setting up the bit rate and encoding strategies that iDVD will use. Perhaps, somebody with a little more experience can comment?... A professional DVD encoding software suite will do a multi-pass encoding - once to figure out optimization and then again to render output. That sort of analysis might require an over-night run to make the disc. I have a feeling Apple avoided that in order to make iDVD more consumer friendly. It also avoids stealing market from more professional products like Final Cut.
You might be able to go into iMovie HD to edit the clips. You could send them to QuickTime, and reduce the bit rate there, then import the QuickTime clips into iDVD.

  • What app should I get to burn home movies made in iMovie

I was surprised to find my new mac book pro doesn't include the ability to burn a dvd from iMovie.  What app should I get to burn home movies made in iMovie.

I have Burn, it is a poor substitute for iDVD.
There is NO alternative.   But iDVD is very easy to get.
iDVD is a “Must Have".   (Yes, it should be included.)
Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.
    800-692-7753
    800-275-2273
If you are still within your 15 day return period,  nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD. That usually does the trick.
Most people report that by asking here:   http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html
    or here:   http://www.apple.com/contact/
they got a free copy of iDVD.
If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk (don't get the download) for about $39.

  • When I try to burn my slideshow.mov to a dvd disc, it will burn but when i put it in the dvd player it says 'disc error'. I have burned it thru iDVD before but forgot how to do it and it won't do it now. The slide show is on my desktop

Rather than burn directly to disk follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

    Hi
Just my thoughts to add to the excellent answers above.
    • BRAND of DVD used - Matters when doing Video-DVDs
Memorex, NoName etc cheap brands usually do NOT work
I only Use Verbatim (more organic dye in these)
    • Type of DVD - matters
    - DVD+/RW - usually results in problems
    - DL-DVDs are more problematic than SL-DVDs
    - DVD+R are a more modern sort - BUT PLAYS BADLY or not at all on older DVD-players
    I only use DVD-R
    • BURN SPEED - matters
    - Best in iDVD app - IS NOT BEST at all but results in lot's of Burn Errors = Doesn't play well or at all
I set this down to x2 or x4 max.

  • I need an app for my Mac Pro to convert MP4 to MOV  format to play in a DVD player

I need an app for my Mac Book Pro to convert MP4 to MOV  format to play in a DVD player.  Thanks

    Quicktime can do this.
Open the MP4 in Quicktime Player. From the menu bar, File >Export > select quality. The subsequent file will be saved as .mov
Alternatively, you can simply change the extension on the mp4 file to mov since the codec is the same.
*I should mention that .mov format is not DVD format (TS_VIDEO), and the DVD will not play in a DVD player, even if you successfully burn the file to it.

  • Pardon if this is silly, iMovie to regular DVD player

This may seem silly but I just went to burn a DVD from iMovie (iLife 2005) and it says the recoreded DVD will not be able to be played in a regular DVD Player.
Is it not possible to record movies I've created in iMovies so that friends and family can watch them on their TV?
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I can't find anything that tells me for sure.

    File>Burn Project to Disc...
That's just the useless command that is supposed to archive the iMovie project to a dataDVD. It is useless because it can't span >4 GB projects to multiple disks.
You can burn videoDVD via iMovie's iDVD tab which sends the project to iDVD. That should play on a standalone DVD player.

  • Want to hook up a regular DVD player to my iBook G3

I want to play DVD movies on my iBook G3 (2002). I wondered if it was possible to connect a regular DVD player from it's video ports to the AV slot on the iBook via the connector that comes with the iBook. Is there an extra connector needed for this?
I can order a Firewire DVD burner but that's not necessary because this is not my main machine. I'd like to just get a regular low-priced DVD player attached.
    Possible? Impossible?

An iBook G3 2002 model should (in theory) be capable of playing DVDs.
Not if it's either of these two models, Dennis:
    http://everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/stats/ibook6002.html

Since there is no video-in, I don't think it's possible without upgrading the internal drive.

  • DVD will burn successfully but cannot be read in any DVD player

I have created a film using Final Cut Pro 7. I have exported as a Quicktime Movie file, used converter to make DVD MPEG-2 and DVD Dolby Audio. I import these files as assets onto DVD Studio Pro (v4.2.2) and add to my project which plays perfectly as we want it to on the Simulation.
When I do either the One Click Burn or Build and Format to burn, the process runs smoothly and says it's successful but no DVD player will recognise the disc. This ranges from top of the line Sony Blu-Ray/DVD players to various other basic DVD players...
How can we get to view these DVDs?

You made an HD DVD. Go back into preference and change it to SD and start over.

  • IMovie to regular DVD player

    Hello,
I have a question about iMovie 08. I have two imovies that I want to transfer to a DVD disc for my mother in law. She doesn't have a computer so it needs to be done to be readable in a regular dvd player.
I read some posts about a similar questions but there wasn't any specific answer about the steps to take.
Thank you very much for any help.

    Hi,
I just recently learned about the details on the iMovie quality issues with versions after iMovie6. I had been upset with the quality of some major personal projects, like family graduations and dance recitals, etc. where quality does matter greatly.
Now, I have many more projects I am waiting on, to work out quality issues. I tried one with going back to using iMovie6, then clicking on export to iDVD9. Does not work like it used to-iDvd comes up as if I just opened it without any connection to a project- it is the opening screen for do I want a new project open an existing, do a onestep, etc.
Starting a new project and importing the imovie6 DV files was OK for quality, but didn't keep any of my editing!
Suggestions? I have read in this and other threads to use imovie6 so I don't have to buy FCExpress and go through that learning curve, but...
Thanks, sorry to be long, thought being so specific would hopefully help.

  • DVD Does not play in regular DVD Player

So I created my DVD and it does not play in a regular DVD player but it will play on my mac. I have had issues before with it being formatted as an HD DVD on the older version of DVD Studio Pro so I checked that and it is formatted as an SD DVD. So I checked the Build log and found notes saying that certain files were not part of the DVD directory and would not be included on the DVD. I have never seen anything like this before so I am assuming that is my issue, but I have no idea how to solve this.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The warnings are the normal ones I am guessing (.lay will not be included etc.)
When you open the DVD in finder on the Mac, do you see folders called VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS or are there pother folders? If so then you may have made a HD DVD again. Could be the issue, or your old build location still had old HD DVD files in it.
What type of media (brand?) did you use? How many players did you try?

  • I'm not very techy, so be gentle! i am using midvd app to burn home movies to dvd from iMovie '11 version 9.0.9. It now burns the dvd but there is nothing on the disc. its not recognised by the iMac or any other dvd player.

I was using midvd app(i never had idvd) to make home movies on dvd from imovie '11 version 9.0.9 with no problems before xmas 2013. ive just tried to make a new one today and it wont work.
It seems to burn to the dvd (you can see a mark on the back of the dvd as if it has some info on it) but it wont play on imac (just says blank disc) or any other dvd player.
I have tried reinstalling midvd app and also tried 2 other dvd creator apps and the same thing happens the app says its burning and the external superdrive whirs like its doing something but it wont play.
The only thing i have done since xmas is all the updates to the operationg system and updated imovie (i didnt like the new version so went back to using the previous one)
Any ideas - i am new to all things mac!

When you export your movie from iMovie, are you choosing H.264? That is the only compression method supported by this miDVD. Youc an give this a try first:
Use Share > Export to Quicktime > Movie to Quicktime Movie > choose Options and then make your choices in Settings, etc (you can choose whatever size your video is - mine was 720 HD at that time):
If that does not work, I'd suggest going to their support site as they claim to be able to burn to DVD.... I just checked their site and here is their list of supported file types:

  • When using imovie and converting to idvd the cd ejects before the burn is complete.  how can I burn the movie for viewing?

when in idvd the disc ejects before multiplexing and burning are completed therefore the disc has issues when viewing.  there are damaged areas.  Is there a work around to burn the movie?

Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

  • Why am I having trouble burning home movies over 2 hrs?

If it exceeds single layer, I use Dual layer which holds  4hrs of space. I do recall having an issues with anything over 2 hrs previously not use to have this problem. 240 min on the blank DVD, it should allow for 4hrs of home movies, right? Once my optical drive started going out, Apple replaced it. But I still can not burn for example, 3hrs of footage. iDVD goes through the whole process but eject, while it says it is in the burning stage. And I slowed the burn process speed down per Apple.

    Hi
    Just a thought.
What encoding Quality did You use ?
    iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (vers 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1)
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    About double on DL DVDs.
    Yours Bengt W
