Burning my System Discs

I am off to Afghanistan and thought it would be a good idea to b/u my system discs which came with my unibody Mac. I want to carry the origiansl with me and have the b/us in outgoing luggage.
OK, first disc was single-sded and burnt OK. Second one is DL and so I used a R+ DL and got the following error:
Unable to burn “ Mac OS X Install DVD.dmg”
(Verification of the burn failed.)
Help?
Oh, using disk utility and made an image and then burnt the image.

Follow these instructions:
Duplicate a CD or DVD
1. Insert the DVD/CD;
2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.
BTW, you can clone the discs to USB flash drives which may be safer to take with you. They also are lighter and take up less room. You will need two 8 GB flash drives. You would have to partition them using GUID and format them Mac OS Extended, Journaled. Then clone each disc to a flash drive.
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the flash drive volume.
Source means the installer DVD volume.

Burning/copying BOOTABLE System discs

As the original OS disks are at one end of the country and I am often the other, I have tried to make a copy using +Disc Utility+ along the lines appearing under 'help' or with the fuller description that appears at:

This makes a DVD that looks just fine in terms of all the files being there, but if I try to run the 'Install Mac OS X' file, I get the message '*The application "Install Mac OS X" cannot be used from this disk.* To install MacOS X please use the application provided on the Mac X installation disk', which, of course, is why I wanted to make a copy in the first place!
Also, it is not possible to use this disk as a bootable one using the 'c'-key routine.
I know this topic turns up in the Archive, but the suggested solution seems to be what I am doing. I remember from years ago (in an ancient version of Toast) there was a separate box to tick to make a bootable disc, am I missing something subtle in +Disc Utility+?
Any ideas of what I am doing wrong?

Thanks for this confirmation, at the risk of boring you all to death, I shall try to delineate each step in case someone can spot the essential one I am missing.
As I only have a single DVD drive fitted, a two-step process (as suggested above, either following the Apple ‘Help’ suggestions or that described on

Initially, copying the disc on to the HD, then burning a disc copy of that.
The individual steps are:
1 Mount the DVD (which launches the DVD player), quit the DVD player leaving the disc icon on the desktop.
2 Open Disk Utility, select the DVD (not the drive!) from the list, click ‘New Image’ (2nd along the top bar).
3 In the resultant ‘Save As’ enter the name and destination HD
4 Set ‘Image Format’ to DVD/CD Master (tried encryption and also set this to ‘none’), then click ‘Save’. This produces a ‘.cdr’ and NOT a ‘.dmg’ suffix for some reason. A Progress bar, which takes a fair few minutes to progress, appears.
5 Once this has copied, a new entry appears in the left (bottom) of the Disk Utility window, still with the .cdr suffix. I then eject the original DVD.
6 Select this .cdr image from the list in the Disk Utility window and click the ‘Burn’ button and check that the window of Disk Utility that has appeared has the correct writer. Insert a blank DVD to the writer, select speed and ‘Verify’, then click ‘burn’ (bottom right).
This produces what appears to be an identical disc to the system disc, but as suggested above, if I try to run the 'Install Mac OS X' file, I get the message '*The application "Install Mac OS X" cannot be used from this disk.* To install MacOS X please use the application provided on the Mac X installation disk'
Unlike my old Toast, at no point is there any mention of whether I am making a bootable disc or not.
What am I doing wrong?

My Mac OSX is coming up with error message when i try to write a disc "The disc can't be burned because the disc drive is not accessible (error code 0x80020020)." Same also when I tried my external disc writer-any clues?

So, I tried all the suggestions and followed the links - all to no avail.
as you can see, (screenshot below) my iMac is a 21.5 inch late 2009 model which isn't showing in the updates listed above
My system report shows that my Mac has the following:
I reset the PRAM and the SMC - still have the same error message when I try to burn discs. I've used both CD's and DVD's and tried with my external Discwriter too.
Any further suggestions??

Help: Cannot startup, not even with system discs

My MacBook (Intel, 10.4.11, no peripherals attached) cannot startup.
If I press the power button (either without pressing any other key, or press and hold 'shift', 'command-v', or 'command-s'):
- there is a regular startup chime
- a blank grey screen shows
- I hear repeating faint clicks from inside the MacBook
- no further progress from there on (waited 10 minutes)
If I press power button and quickly insert the Mac OS X system disc (either without pressing any other key, or press and hold 'c', or 'd'):
- there is a regular startup chime
- the disc spins up
- a grey screen shows a blinking file folder with a question mark
- no further progress from there on (waited 3 minutes)
I have tried the following without success:
- make sure RAM and hard drive are properly seated by taking them out and putting them in again.
- reset SMC
The last thing I was doing before this problem:
- I left the MacBook while it was burning a data DVD using Toast
- When I came back 2 hours later, the bottom part of screen shows a gear wheel spinning. I also saw a progress bar with Toast. I cannot eject the DVD or get any response by pressing any key including force quit keys.
- I pressed the power button to force shut down.
- I pressed the power button to start up. I held the trackpad button and the DVD ejected but did not start up from there on.
- I cannot start up the MacBook since then.

The HD is so messed up that it messes with normal booting.
Your best bet other than Apple Service is to disconnect the HD ribbon cable, insert the Install disk, hold Option key down on startup, select DVD to boot from, after it boots, recoonect the ribbon cable to the HD, then "Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Partial music cd burn, subsequent system crash

I was able to burn with iTunes 6 and after installing 7 and the updates to date I haven't been able to burn a music cd except once after a reinstall of the software. I've tried uninstalling and deleting all the files before reinstalling which allowed me to burn that one disc. I thought that had fixed the problem, but the next disc I tried to burn caused the error again. I've reduced the writing speed. My drivers are up to date. Help?

Drive is empty.
The last failed audio CD burn had error code -128(0xffffff80). It happened on drive D: HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GCA-4040N on CDR media at speed 0X.

System crash that I have experienced occurs only during CD Burner or DVD activities. It is very random, however I have notice that when I am burning CD (test mode only) the system crash occurs quite often. I attribute it to the fact that this mode is perhaps harder than only play. However, system crash occurs also during play mode. The crash is actualy stop mode with different error core, I mean, stop 0xd1, 0x0A, 24, 77. BTW, I dissabled autoreboot option. So far it was no problem with reboot after crash. So, I suspected some problem with mainboard, however, perhaps, that PSU can impcat as well. Unfortunately, I have no experience with PC hardware, therefore I need your advice based on rich experience. What I dare to assume that the problem rather in hardware than in SW.

While importing and burning some CDs, my entire library has disappeared. Also, there no longer is a "burn file to disc" command in the File menu. I have downloaded the latest version of itunes which restored only tracks I bought from the iTunes store.

Also, the "burn playlist to disc" command has disappeared from the File options. I downloaded the latest version of iTunes but that only restored tracks I'd bought from the iTunes store. I also tried setting up another logon.

Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be copied & renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to an earlier state. Look for a recent .tmp file that is similar in size to the .itl files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder. If it has happened repeatedly you may want the earliest such file generated since the last iTunes upgrade.
If applicable, see iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.

My Macpro Intel Core Duo-running OS 10.6.8 has been crashing pretty much with everything I try to open. I find the last resort will be to boot from Snow Leopard system disc. Has anyone experienced this? I can only run Google Chrome.

In the last few days, it seems that my computer has all of a sudden caught a virus. I have never had that happened to a computer, but I have surely heard about it. I can't think of any other reason it is behaving like this. I know that Macs have been pretty much impervious to viruses, but that was before they were the majority of users.
Anyway, what is happening is, my computer keeps crashing whenever I try to open a program, app, document, folder, file, etc. I tried to boot from Drive Genius to establish the problem, but Drive Genius crashed too. I know the last ditch effort (after cleaning and maintenance of disc verification and permissions and repairs, is to reboot from the system disc.
Before I go there I was hoping someone in the community would have a suggestion to help me avoid that ultimate last resort. The tech support guy at Drive Genius told me that probably would have to be the way to go (as in reboot) and if that doesn't clear it up, it's repair time.

As others have pointed out, this isn't malware. That should not be your first (or even fifty-first) thought when your Mac starts misbehaving. For more on this topic, see my Mac Malware Guide.

You mention "cleaning and maintenance." Have you been running utilities claiming to do those things? If so, you may be the victim of an overly-zealous cleaning job, which has removed important files and damaged your system.
If I'm understanding correctly, you're unable to open any applications at all... is that right? Do you have any backups? If you don't have backups, you're in a sticky situation, as it will be difficult to make backups in your current state, but you shouldn't try any kind of repairs without them. (Actually, you shouldn't do anything with your computer without backups, but this is especially important when something is going badly wrong.)
If you have backups, reboot from your Snow Leopard install disc. From there, first, repair the hard drive with Disk Utility. Once that is done, assuming repairs were successful, reinstall the system. You can simply reinstall it on top of your current system, and it will replace any damaged or lost system files with new copies. (You'll also need to update the system via Software Update after reinstalling.)
If you don't have backups, or if Disk Utility can't repair damage, or if the problem continues even after a reinstall, post back with those details.

If your Mac is a new one, like mine, then it comes with a version of iLife that doesn't have iDVD and if so, there isn't an easy way to burn a DVD from iPhoto or iMovie that will play on a normal DVD player. Having only just transferred from a Windows machine to a Mac, it seems incredibly arrogant for Apple to think people don't use DVD players anymore.

After canceling the burning of a disc in iTunes my disc drive is no longer recognized.

I have: MBP 13" 10.6.7 w/ a standard dvd/cd burner (the one that normally comes with them)
I was in the process of burning a really long playlist (requiring 4 cds) and at the end of the 4th it was taking forever (5-10 minutes?) to "finish burning" so I decided to cancel the burn and just re-burn that section on a new disc. When I canceled it started taking another 5-10 minutes and nothing would let me eject the disc because it wasn't recognized yet (I didn't let it finish the burn) - I tried disc utility, terminal commands, the eject button, everything.
I then restarted a few times trying the various ways to force eject a disc (holding down the trackpad, pressing option, holding the eject button) but non worked and then once restarted my computer didn't even recognize my disc drive in disc utility. I tried re-burning a playlist so that iTunes would maybe eject the disc in order to insert a new one but it just said "Disc burner or software not found..." At this point I have no idea what to do but I'd really like to have my disc drive working well...

My own HP pavillion has the same problem. Try googling "Vista doesn't recognize DVD" one answer is to edit our upper and lower filters in a registry setting, another is to power down and remove battery for at least a minute and a third is a script that you can run. I only mention them because I've seen all 3 and according to the sites all 3 have met with some success. Sadly for me, no glory! Good luck as I'm still looking.

IDVD will no longer burn DVD+R discs

After years of happily burning both -R and +R DVD's, now suddenly my iDVD will only work with -R? I'm stranded here with no -R discs (and a new 50-pack of the other), so I hope you can tell me how to restore this function of my software. I suspect it has to do with updates that make the various components incompatible, but I wouldn't have a clue how to remedy that.
I've tried closing and re-starting iDVD, emptying the trash, removing the motion function, deleting encoded assets, moving com.apple.iDVD something something to the desktop before opening iDVD, but nothing made it keep the disc in the drive. It spits it out saying to please insert a DVD-R disc.

Try this:
1. Instead of burning directly to disc, use the option in iDVD to output to a disc image
2. Upon completion of creating the disc image, use Apple Disk Utility to burn the image to your new media
If that fails, it is likely a media issue; your drive is not compatible with your new media.
Outside of this, something else you can try is to simply see if the disc can be burned using Finder. While in Finder, you can mount writable discs in your drive for backing up files and folders. If Finder cannot mount and write to the disc, again you have a media issue.
What to do?
Wait for Apple to update the drive firmware to handle newer media; or get an external drive that is newer; or purchase new media. The latter is your cheapest and most timely solution.
I've got quite a selection of media here and seem to notice that some brands give me the most problem. I've found that Verbatim, Sony, Fuji, TDK, and Taiyo-Yuden seem to give predictable results time and time again.
My most recent failure was with some off-brand +R DL media I picked up at a Frys sale. While trying to burn a Snow Leopard install disk, I had 3 failures in a row - drive recognized the disc and burned it, but it would not verify. Going back to one of my tried and true brands resulted in success on the first try.

I would like to burn a few install programs to a data disc so that should I ever need to I can reinstall them but I am a a loss as how to do this in mountain lion on 2012 imac I do have a superdrive but since i haven't done this before not sure how to go about it. I have several installer downloads I purchased , I just don't want to repurchase them later if I can help it . thanks for all help:)
also on another note but maybe related can I use my old idvd program from ( not for this but future home movies ) my 2008 imac box set???

In addition to Clinton's method (which is handy if you already have the data files in one place or are willing to move or copy them into one place), you can also make use of "burn folders" -- special folders of aliases that "Burn (name) to disc" will follow while burning. When you drag any file or folder into a burn folder, an alias is created (much faster than copying the data, and less disruptive then moving it).
Search for "burn folder" in Finder Help for more information.

How Do I Burn a Music Disc with Files Names Included?

As iTunes does not support CD Text you can't include track information on a AudioCD.
As a workaround you may "Submit Track Names" to CDDA through iTunes Menu Advanced after having burned a CD.

System discs recovery and fully clean out a Lion install?

I just got an iMac, i7 - 27" 2.93GHz (used) - this box originally ships with Snow OS and Applications Install discs. (but problems with the Apps disc and no Lion install included)
The seller had upgraded to Lion on it and wiped a lot of stuff clean but - didn't do a clean install so there's some residual stuff (keychain and other) I would like to wipe out. (It ships with Snow and I have no Lion install currently).
1. Is there a way to fully uninstall *everything* from a past Lion user - including their Home -
a) without completely reformatting the drive
b) also - without a Lion installer of any kind - but wanting to keep the existing Lion OS in place
The box arrived and the System Discs were loose with the keyboard and trackpad flying around in the box causing damage to the Applications Install Disc. Both Disk Utility and Toast11 fail to make backups or Image files due to read errors - (backups are the first thing I always do with System Discs).
2. I have the Applications Install Disc from my 2010 MacBook Pro - will it work in place of the iMac's? None with my 2011 Mini :-( and I sold the '09 Mini.
3. Does Apple have any kind of replacement disc policy/program short of buying them all over again? ($$$expensive?)
a) This iMac has Applecare through most all of 2013 - would it help for replacement discs?

First off, copying the original discs is prohibited unless you own the correct discs and use the restore directions on http://www.macmaps.com/bootcd.html
I do not know if those directions work with the Snow Leopard installer.
However, once installed you can make a clone*:

If the discs don't boot with an Option key boot, he sent you the wrong discs.
Apple will replace the original discs typically at about $20 per disc.
Macs that shipped with Lion originally don't have 10.6 compatibility except a few listed at the bottom of:

If they aren't compatible with those discs, if Lion was installed, there is a way to restore Lion from the installed Lion restore partition, as mentioned on my backup page above. Macs that can't install Snow Leopard, but can install Lion do not ship with any discs, as the restore partition is already there.

My Slot Drive is giving me trouble. Doesn't burn or read discs that i have/want to work!!

My Slot drive is giving me trouble. It will not burn or read discs that i have/want to work on. It makes a strange noise when i put in a blank cd and spits it back out after 20seconds. It will read third party discs no problem which is very strange indeed. Last week i burned photos to a blank disc and went to make a duplicate and this is when the trouble began. Has anyone ever come across an issue such as this before?? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Well it looks like my media i.e. CDs/DVDs have gone past their sell by date. I purchased new discs to test your theory/bad experience and it looks like i too suffer the same fate!! It's great that this problem i have been having seems to be now rectified although it does lead me to a new issue, as the last two/three years of work saved on these discs are being rejected by my iMac If this is the case then what is the point in purchasing and burning discs for storage over a time that is quite reasonable really(at least 5years)!!!!!

TS1436 Trying to burn a cd disc and receive error code 4450. What is this error code?

When burning a CD disc, The progress bar doesn't move and then I get an error code: 4450. My computer freezes up and no functions will work. I rebooted and downloaded the latest iTunes update but still receive error code 4450. Anyone have suggestions for me. Thank you for your response.

I just thought I would try Force Quit Finder and Relaunch and it has worked. Sorry for wasting anyone's time.
