Burning Photo CDs

Simple problem - when attempting to burn iPhoto images to a CD for outside use, using Finder, when I load a blank CD I get an error message "This disc cannot be used because it is not recognized". This is a new problem for me. Am using Sony 1x-40x CD-R. According to Apple they should work. But consistently get the same message. Am burning on a CD/DVD superdrive. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

No, speed is not normally a factor. It's a bit for bit copy so there's no difference. But burning at very fast speeds, on some CDs it up to 24 or more, the time for the laser of any spot to burn in that bit is less and the burn may not be as definitive. Speed is very prevalent when burning iDVD projects to disk. The slower the better. That's because the program is trying to stuff in much more data on the same surface area, using smaller distances between spots, etc. For burning a CD of photos from iPhoto I wouldn't be very concerned.
DVDs can store up to about 4.4G of data whereas CDs 800MB. A big difference. Speed for data DVDs is not as critical as it is for burning a Video DVD. I
If you're transferring photos from one computer to another and can get them on a CD or two that's the way I'd go. You can burn a CD much faster than a DVD and the CDs are really cheap these days. Now have I confused you enough? Good luck.
Do you Twango?

I have been trying unsuccessfully to upload my hundreds of previously burned photos (some CD'S AND SOME DVD'S) on my PC using Nero.  They are mostly jpegs, some tiffs.  They do  upload to iPhoto on my new Mac but I bought this program in hopes of using it for editing my photos.

  • Best way to burn photo cd

Each year I burn the photos in my iphoto library on a cd, then clear them from my iMac computer, to organize and save space. What is the most efficient way to do this so that the photos are easy to see when the cd is inserted? I import about 800 photos into iphoto 2.0.1, yet many have the same file name because I erase my camera picture card often and the file numbers start back at 1 each time.
    Any suggestions?
    iMac DV+   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

but it takes so long to click through all of the numbered folders
to find the individual actual photos.
Before you do anything else, open iPhoto Help and search for the topic "about the iphoto library folder". Read the first line, and let it soak in for a minute. If you want iPhoto to work smoothly, the best course of action is to avoid going into the iPhoto Library folder -- it is not an ordinary Finder folder. iPhoto is perfectly capable of exporting your selected images -- there is no reason to go hunting for them in the iPhoto Library folder.
As far as your external CD burner goes... Have you tried burning CDs from within iPhoto? It was rare for the original Bondi iMacs to have an internal CD burner, but iPhoto works perfectly well with a variety of external units connected to them. Again, in iPhoto Help, search on the phrase "burning photo cds". If iPhoto doesn't recognize your CD burner, go to VersionTracker.com and download "PatchBurn" -- there is a good chance that a driver is available to fix the problem.

  • Finder won't let me view any of by burned photo cd's.

I've backed up lots of photos to CD. Whenever I do this I check they have been burned properly before erasing them from my mac. Today decided to have a look at some previously burned CD's. At first the CD didn't appear on the desktop at all so I changed the CD and DVD preference to 'open finder' instead of 'ask what to do'. Now finder says the CD is blank or treats it like a burn folder. Either way I cannot see the photos that I know for sure are there because I had a look at the same photo CDs on my mac a few weeks ago. I also played them in my TV DVD player and could see them fine.
So I decided to burn some photos to CD a few minutes ago, like always I checked the photos had burned properly and they had. When I ejected the CD and then put it back in the same thing happened - blank CD or burn folder. Ejected and tried again but this time got the message that the CD could not be read by the computer....it was just burned 5 minutes previously!
I've also had problems burning before and have had to change from 24x to 8x which seems to work better.
Thankfully I've backed up all my files to an external hard drive but like to have additional backup to CD as I've had problems with external hard drives in the past.
    Any suggestions?

The most recent brand I've been using is maxell but I've used TDK in the past, I don't usually buy cheap media and stick to well known brands. Every CD I put into the mac reads as blank regardless of brand. Finder reads them all as blank CD burn folders if that makes sense. When I get info on the CD the size reads as zero KB which it shouldn't as there are probably around 600MBs of photos on each one.

how can I burn Photo to a dvd

    Hi Martha1963,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The article below will show you how to burn your data to a DVD using the Finder application.
Click on the link to see more details and screenshots.

Burning CDs and DVDs using the Finder in Mac OS X
Use the Finder in Mac OS X if you want to burn specific files to a disc.
Note: If you want to back up your entire system, you should use Time Machine (with a hard disk). Burning discs is a good choice for copying select files to a disc, rather than your entire system.
In Mac OS X, you can either:
Insert a blank disc, drag files you want to burn to the disc, then click Burn or choose Burn from the File menu. See this article for more information.
    or
You can create a Burn Folder named with what you want your disc's name to be, fill it with content you want to burn to disc, click Burn when ready, and insert a disc when prompted. To create a Burn Folder, in the Finder choose New Burn Folder from the File menu.

  • Burning photo cd for tv

    I don't get it
I burned a photo cd last July in iphoto, carried it cross country to my mom's, and then went shopping for a TV/DVD player . I went thru alot of stores and found one. I Can't tell ya what brand it is but it played it as a slide show on the tv just fine.
Send a few cds with the Last one in Nov. They worked just fine.
I test them on a Go Video dual deck of vcr/dvd burned-player
It played the cd as one picture then one data screen until we went thru the whole thing.
now it will only allow us to go to one picture at a time.
seems each photo is in its only folder.
did something happen to iphoto since then? I see that others have been told that this does not work but it did!
IDVD might be the answer but last version I had always wanted more memory on the hard drive than I had.
And it takes so long to set up and make pretty!
Is there another work around or do I have to buy more software now?
mac intel mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   and old 10.3 emac limping bad!

    B S-S:
Another user posted a problem similar, not for photo CDs but with the extra file or whatever for each photo burned to the CD. Can you describe how you go about burning the disk? Also have you run any software updates since the first successful burns. Also what does the burned disk look like in the Finder?
Do they still play OK on your Mom's player or do both players show the same problem?
Regarding iDVD, your intel Mini should handle that pretty well.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Burn photos to disc

With the new iPhoto 11, and Aperture, I have no idea how to burn a CD or DVD with my files, as the older versions let me. How can I do it?

iPhoto '11: Create your own photo CDs and DVDs
If you have a disc drive that can burn discs, you can share or archive your photos (and video clips) by putting them on a CD or DVD.
You can burn photos, albums, and video clips to disc, but you can’t directly burn slideshows or projects (such as books, cards, and calendars) created in iPhoto.
To burn a CD or DVD for viewing in iPhoto:
Select the albums, photos, or video clips you want to burn to a disc.
                               Choose Share > Burn.
Insert a CD-RW disc or a blank CD-R or DVD-R disc into your drive.                           Disc information appears at the bottom of the iPhoto viewing area. The green area on the disc icon represents the amount of disc space your photos require.
If necessary, type a new name for the disc in the Name field.
                               Click the Burn button.
Click the Burn button in the Burn Disc window.

  • Burn Photos onto CD

It keeps saying unknown error when I try to burn photos onto a cd. How can I fix this?

Are you using iPhoto to do this or something else?
Are you able to burn CD for other purposes, such as making a music CD in iTunes or a data CD with the Finder?
Are you using CD-Rs or CD-RW disks?
Have you tried a different brand of CDs? Sometimes this will help.
Let us know, we'll keep working with you.

  • Recognizing CD's to burn photos

I am having trouble with burning cds. In fact, I am not able to put a new cd in my iMAC and burn anything. The computer is not even recognizing the cds. I had a problem prior to this issue where the cd was not recognized and I couldn't eject it. I was finally able to eject the cd while I restarting the computer. Since this incident, no blank cd is even recognized by the computer. It continues to eject the cd. I burned several cds yesterday so not for sure what went wrong. I am a photographer and have clients relying on me to get their proofs to them. Please help as it is the Christmas holidays and I am at the end of my rope with this computer.
    Thanks,
    USM Grad

I am having the same problem. Neither my imac or laptop will even recognize a cd if it isn't music. I am trying to burn photos and it goes all the way through the process then says the burn failed. Tried to see if they were there anyway, but neither computer recognizes the cds. And they are the same brand I have always used with these computers. This just stopped working all the sudden as if after some update, though I cannot determine exactly when it occurred.

I am trying to burn some cds from my playlist on itunes, but my playlist shows many of my songs in light print and says that it will not burn because it is not a file, these are all songs I have purchased quite a while ago, how do i get them to files?

If they were songs you purchased from itunes, try redownloading them from your purchases...
if that doednt work, make sure the optuon to copy files to itunes media folder is checked in settings, then find and download from the net. and re-add them to your library

  • I want to burn photos to a dvd disc.  I have done this before.  Error message coming up.  There is enough room on disc.

I am trying to burn photos from my library to free up space on my mac.  I am down to 13 gb.  Every time I burn a dvd with a couple of hundred pics it comes up "burn failed" optic drive.  I have burned in the past.  What is the problem?

Try freeing up space BEFORE you trying burning a DVD.

  • How do you burn photos to CDR from Iphoto. 9.5.1

How do you burn photos in Iphoto 9.
You used to do it from Share and now I can't find the instruction.

That feature has been discontinued.  One can no longer burn a "mini" library from iPhoto to disk.
To burn photos to disk with iPhoto 9 and later the photos must be exported to a folder on the Desktop and that folder burned to disk via the Finder.

  • Cannot burn Audio CDs (only Data CDs) since upgrade to Itunes 7

I'm having a problem and it is very frustrating. Worked fine with Ver. 6 but you had to download to ver. 7 before you could purchase any new music so I did. Big mistake! My problem is burning CDs. I can only burn "Data CDs." I went to "Edit" and then to "preferences" then to "Advanced" and then to "Burning" -At that point you have a choice to choose Audio CD burning or Data CD burning. I will not stay on Audio CD burning - keeps defaulting to Data CD burning and there is no "save" button or anything to stop it from happening. When it burns from the data cd it the cd will only play in my computer - not in my car or other player. Would you know how to correct this???? to stop the default? My ipod is fine. I hope Apple takes care of this soon.

  • CD burner will not burn audio cds from iTunes

I have an Iomega external CD-RW burner that has been working perfectly until now. When I try to burn a cd from a playlist in iTunes, after inserting the blank cd... it says that it is checking the playlist, then the status goes to preparing to burn... and nothing happens. The drive almost appears to be unresponsive & itunes seems to have frozen, but they don't. So I have just ejected the disk and it's blank.
I've tried resetting the computer, power, changing the location of the usb connection, different cd-rs, nothing works.
I tried burning a data cd, which was successful. I just don't understand why it won't burn an audio cd from iTunes. Is there a problem with iTunes? Because it doesn't seem to be the cd burner since it is able to burn data cds.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
    iMac Indigo (2000)   Mac OS X (10.3.5)

I think it has always been the case that for burning
CDs with iTunes, the requirement is that it is an
internal Apple CD burner and that external ones might
    or might not work.
I have used external burners in the past with no problems.

  • HT201788 How do I burn photos onto a DVD from iPhoto?

I am trying to burn photos/folders from iPhoto onto a DVD/CD but when disc utility opens I am unable to burn any of the items or folders onto the disc.  I thought that my optical drive was perhaps malfunctioning so I purchased a SuperDrive.  However, I am running into the same problem. The folders or pictures within, that I want to burn remain inactive.  How can I burn these pictures onto DVD/CD?

What kind of DVD disk do you want to create?  A data disk that just contains the image files or a video DVD disc that can be played on a DVD player on a TV set.  They are two entirely different types of disks and require different workflows.
If you're running Yosemite then you have iPhoto 9.6 or 9.6.1.
    For a data disk:
1 - select the photos to be burned to disk and export to a folder on the Desktop File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu.  Set the Kind = what you want, the original file or the current, edited version.
2 - insert a blank DVD in the optical drive.
3 - drag the folder of photos onto the DVD disk's icon.
3 - drag the DVD disk icon to the Trash Bin in the Dock which turns into the Burn function:
    For a video DVD disk:
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  For iPhoto 9.5 and later selct 480p.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
