Burning/Playing DVD's

Im a new Mac user and Im trying to copy/burn a DVD (Movie)..
1) Do I need additional software on my iMac, or can I burn using Disc Utilities?
I tried to copy and burn using the below instructions, it said burned sucessfully, but the disc doesnt appear to have anything on it, and I cant play it..
Instructions
          1.          Make an Image of a DVD With Mac OS X
          ◦          1
Place the DVD you want to copy into your DVD drive.
          ◦          2
Go to and click on the hard drive and select "Applications." From there, launch the disk utility.
          ◦          3
Click on the name of your DVD that appears in the white pane on the left hand side in disk utility.
          ◦          4
Choose "New Image" in the disk utility toolbar. From there a dialog box will appear. Name the new image and choose a destination where you want to save to save it. The best idea is to save it to your desktop because it will make it easier to find when it's time to burn the image.
          2.          Burn the DVD Image With Mac OS X
          ◦          1
Launch disk utility again.
          ◦          2
Select "Burn" in the disk utility toolbar.
          ◦          3
Find where you saved the image if you didn't save it to the desktop.
          ◦          4
Click on the DVD image and then click on "Burn."
          ◦          5
Insert a blank DVD into your DVD drive and your DVD should be ready in no time.
Lastly, if I just want to watch a movie, what application do I use? (sorry if this sounds dumb)
Thanks, Janet

Most DVD are copy protected, that could be the problem.

Congratulations on the new Mini. Are you saying you tried burning and it does not play, or do you want to burn it only for the computer to be able to play it?

  • How do I burn a DVD on my new iMac to play on external DVD player

I have a new iMac at work (3.5 GHz Intel Core i7), running on OS X Yosemite, and I'm trying to figure out how to burn a DVD that can be played on an external DVD player. I have a disc burner connected, but just noticed that iDVD (the way I used to burn video files) is no longer part of my installed applications.
    Thanks for any help.

If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Softwareor eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
If you're creating a slideshow in iPhoto and want to add it to an iDVD project export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • I downloaded a movie from iTunes.  I wanted to burn a DVD so I dragged the movie onto a blank DVD and it appeared to burn it correctly.  When I try to play the movie from this DVD  I get an error message referencing "you can't open the application mediaio

I downloaded a movie from iTunes.  I wanted to burn a DVD of the movie which I could play on my home entertainment system.  After I had burned the DVD I tried to play the movie from it on the computer and got the message " You can't open the application mediaioserver because it may be damaged or incomplete".  What is this all about?  Are there settings I need to change?  PS: I tried to play the DVD on my home DVD player and it also doesn't work.  Help!

Klaus:  Does this mean that I can only watch this movie on my computer and ipad not on my home big screen system?

  • Can no longer Play DVD's or Burn Disks in on Macmini

    Hi,
I have recently rebuilt my MacMini with a new WD500 Gb hard drive with Snow Leopard and that went fine.
One issue that maybe related is that I can no longer play DVD's or burn items to DVD. I have had a look in system profiler and can see the Pioneer drive in the ATA Device Tree.
When I insert a DVD, I hear the drive trying to run it but after a while it just spits the DVD out. If I insert a blank DVD, it recognises the DVD and I can select it to burn but when it starts the burning process it fails and again spits the disc out.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gavin

http://www.macsales.com/ has numerous good optical drives. http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ may list others.
Note for 2 USB port Mac Minis (as opposed to 4 or 5 on the rear), be sure to get a Firewire optical drive, as Mac OS X won't boot USB on PowerPC Macs except in rare USB model drives that are hard to find.

Go to the Map mode in your iDVD project and make sure the blue bin at the left is empty.  That's where you drag slideshows to if you want the DVD to open immediately to that slideshow and bypass the menu.
If there is an item in there drag it out.

  • HT1152 When I burn a DVD from iMovie, it shows up as just a series of folders when playing it back on a TV/DVD player..What is the problem?

Help!! I am a new Mac user and have Os X Lion.  My son and I are starting to use imovie and have downloaded several video's from his new HD digital Bloggie camera.  I just want to burn a basketball game to a DVD.  So I went into imovie, followed the steps to iDVD and then Burn.  But, when I put the DVD in the TV to play, it just shows a series of Folders.  What is the problem?  I am burning to DVD+R memorex.

    Hi, you posted this in
Mac OS & System Software > Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard
You're running Lion and this is an iMovie question.  I've asked it be moved.  It will help if you post in the correct forum in future because it will speed up your getting an answer.

  • Cannot burn a DVD without errors!! Plays fine in IMovie and Quicktime.

Have been using IMovie for almost a year and really regretting getting an IMac, as I am having so many issues with it. Initially, I thought the issue was with IMovie (although when I finish a movie it plays just fine on the computer). Then I thought the issue was with the Quick Time export (although when I finish the export and play from the Quick Time file, it perfect).
Then, I burn the DVD, using IDVD. I think this is the issue! Specifically, when I play the new DVD, the following occurs:
    1. Some (not all) music tracks are distorted or sound like there are two tracks playing over each other;
    2. Some (not all) music tracks don't play;
    3. The sound levels of the music is erratic and increases in volume significantly;
    4. The DVD (normally towards the end) starts pausing and usually takes me back to the beginning.
I have now made a number of DVDs, some longer than others, some shorter, but all seem to have these issues.
As stated above. The movie plays fine in the IMovie file on full screen view AND in the Quick Time viewer file. It is when the DVD is burnt that all these errors occur.
I have tried changing the settings in IDVD. Even tried the professional quality.
Can some one please help in a relatively non technical way? I am really ready to throw away the IMac and go back to Showtime on windows, which was far easier to use. Please help?

Not sure how to check how much memory?
Click on the icon for your hard drive. Then go to File>Get info; this will bring up a window that will show you what the capacity is for your hard drive as well as the amount of available space. It is this available amount that you need to check.
The source of the music is ITunes. I think they are MP3, not sure, but they are MP3 compatible.
It is possible that this could be the origin to your difficulty; it has been in the past. Convert the format of your music to AIFF. Here are the directions from iTunes Help:
    +_Saving a copy of a song in a new file format_+
+You can convert a song to a different file format (and keep a copy of the original). For example, you can save a copy of a compressed song file such as MP3 or AAC in an uncompressed song format (AIFF or WAV).+
+When converting from a compressed to uncompressed file format (for example, from MP3 to AIFF), you shouldn't notice any reduction in sound quality. However, when converting between compressed formats (for example, MP3 and AAC), you may notice a reduction in the sound quality. For the best results, if you want your music encoded in a different file format, import the music again from the original source using the new encoding format.+
+IMPORTANT: Except for iTunes Plus songs, you can’t convert iTunes Store purchases.+
    +To convert a song's file format:+
+Choose iTunes > Preferences, click Advanced, and then click Importing.+
+In the Import Using pop-up menu, choose the format you want to convert songs to, and then click OK to save the settings.+
+Select one or more songs in your library, Option-click, and choose “Convert Selection to.”+
+The song in its original format and the newly converted song appear in your library.+
If your music was purchased from iTunes and is not iTunes plus, post back for directions on how to change the format.
What brand of DVD are you using and what speed are you using for the burn?
The very knowledgeable users on this forum recommend Maxell or Verbatim. Also, be sure to burn at 4x or lower. This tends to reduce the likelihood of errors during the burn process. As an added step, close your other applications during the burn process.

  • IBook superdrive won't play DVD it burned

We have a new iBook w/ a superdrive. We used it to burn a DVD with no problems except the iBook won't play it. The DVD will play in home DVD players and other Macs that we have tried but not in the iBook that authored the DVD (w/ iDVD). The DVD will mount - show up on the desktop - and the DVD Player app will launch but not play. Says it is an unsupported format or something like that.
    Any suggestions?

Did you use a DVD -RW?
In this case switch to -R, +R or +RW - sometimes DVD Player refuses to play DVD -RW media with the above mentioned error message.

  • Problem burning/playing self-play DVD

Project: to burn and play a self-play DVD
Process: to do this I ....
....first created a slideshow in Keynote
....second exported as a Quicktime movie
....third burned a DVD - however, when placed in a DVD player, I received a message on the player that it was a data disk!
....fourth I used iDVD to create a DVD - however, when it played, "Movies" had to be selected and then the movie to be played had to be selected - what I would like to have is a DVD that will play the movie itself when inserted into a DVD player.
...fifth used iDVD to create another DVD and used its map function and dropped the movie on the firs square for it to be played automatically - this process was suggested in a reply to my post in iDVD- however, it resulted having to make the same selections as before.
...sixth used "Burn.app" which converted my Keynote slideshow to a movie in mpg format and burned the DVD - however, when I played the DVD in a DVD player, the message came up on the TV screen "Playback Prohibited by Area Limitations" and it would not play
I also have used a Burn Folder on which I placed my Quicktime movie but when used in a DVD player, I received the message on TV screen that it was a data disk!
I would appreciate any suggestions, help, and information on how to burn a DVD that will simply automatically play the movie when placed in a DVD player without the introductions and selections to be made when iDVD is used.
Thanks very much for your help.

  • My DVD will play DVD's but will not burn from FCP

my DVD will play DVD's but will not burn from FCP also the Finder does not recognize when I load a black DVD

    You need DVD burning/Authoring software.
EIther iDVD or Roxio Toast or try freeware burning software Burn for OS X.
iDVD is no longer available, but the last complete version that still works comes with Apple's iLife '09 apps.
You would need to search for this on online sites like Amazon to see if you can still purchase.
You install the iDVD app and all the authoring themes by doing a custom install of the disc and ONLY installing the iDVD app and iDVD themes.
Here are a few copies of this for sale on Amazon U.S. site.

    Roxio Toast is another option.

And freeware burn software Burn for OS X.
