Burning preview

1. Either I'm missing something obvious or something is very is wrong with iTunes: isn't there away to preview how many song will fit on a CD or how much space is left? I had never noticed this (I don't usually burn discs on iTunes) but I was expecting something similar to iPhoto - where a green to red graphics tells how close we are to filling a disc. I'd like to know when there's still space for another song or that the reason I need a second disc is because the playlist is 10 seconds too long...
2 By the way: is there a way too find the EXACT lenght of a playlist? I only see the total time, in hours and tenth's of the hour, on the bottom of the iTunes window. Am I missing something, again?
Thanks.

For your first question,i'm affraid its not quite as graphical as iPhoto, but the previous poster is right, just click on the numbers at the bottom of the itunes window (while the playlist in question is being displayed) , they will toggle through the two time designations. You just have to know how much time your CD can hold in terms of audio content. 80 minutes usually.
(don't forget to make sure you have AUDIO CD selected in the Preferences - i wish apple would let you switch between burning formats without having to go into the preferences... it should be a switch right next to the burn button...oh well.).

  • Ken Burns preview is black

    Hi, my Mac is G5 PPC - 10.4.8 - GeForce FX 5200 - iMovie 6.0.3
My problem is: I open new project by iMovie (only photos); I have modified the first photos with Ken Burns without problems, after they are not successful more to make modifications, because preview of K.B it appears completely black. Fortunately I was hardly at the beginnig of the job....Help me

Are you trying to edit a previously imported image rendered by the Ken Burns Effect? If so, there's an iMovie bug that prevents you from updating the clip when you empty the iMovie trash. It also turns the preview black.

  • Ken Burns Effect - OFF!!!

I just imported about 45 pics into iMovie and they all came imported with the Ken Burns effect and I did not want it all on of them. I mean, every couple of pictures it's cool, but the same effect one after the other is beyond boring.
When I tried to select them all and turn it off it "sort of" worked. It turned the effect off (or so I thought) but then the picture has this major jumpy action that it takes on. When it previews a clip where KBfx has been turned off it zooms in for a split second and then JUMPS to final full version of the picture. Not the look I was going for...
Any suggestions?? Especially on turning thing off so that the pics are imported with that feature.
    Thanks so much!

The Ken Burns Effect user interface takes some getting used to. Sometimes it appears to have a mind of its own. It doesn't, actually, but you have to figure out why it's doing what it's doing.
    • A crucial feature is that the displayed Ken Burns settings, and the miniature KB preview window, reflect the SELECTED CLIP. That means that if you configure the settings you want, THEN select a clip, the settings will switch to what they were when you imported that clip.
So... to change a previously-imiported clip you have to FIRST select it, THEN change the KB settings.
    • When you select a clip, the Ken Burns preview window always does its dance, all on its own, if the checkbox was on when you imported the photo. You have to pause for that dance to finish before you change the KB settings. If you don't wait for the dance to finish, you'll probably accidentally set the wrong thing. Although you've intended to set the Start setting, for example, you will probably have set the End setting. That happens because, on its own, the dance has activated the End setting.
    • When you've figured out how all that works, there's one more hurdle.
If the KB checkbox was off when you imported the photo, KB will fail to display the settings of the selected clip in the timeline. Depending on what those settings were, the Update button will create a clip that's not at all what you want. If the photo was imported with a pan or zoom, for example, updating the clip without manually resetting the KB settings will create quite a mess.
It's a bug. It doesn't happen when the KB checkbox is ON when the photo was imported.
    • One final thing. It's not obvious how to re-set the pan and zoom to 1.00 (no pan and zoom.) The trick is to click on the Start half of the Start/End thingy, wait for the dance to finish, then click on it again, then drag the zoom slider a bit to the right, then all the way left. Repeat for the End half of the Start/End thingy. Now both the zoom and the pan are centered.
I know, Apple didn't use the A Team when they designed this user interface.

  • Flickering / live screen artefacts (iM6)

When I go to Media >> Photos and select a photo, the Ken Burns preview that appears by default seems to be a distorted version of my desktop. When I uncheck the Ken Burns, there is no difference (except that the image is not getting larger). I can't understand what the problem is. Here's an image:
    http://www.dan.uk6.net/picture1.png
You can probably just make out the dock, and the yellow at the bottom is the color of the picture (a saxophone). The problem only happens with photos from digital cameras, and i have tried photos from 3 different cameras. With images (jpgs) from the net, the preview is fine but when the clip has rendered I get random blips of the same effect throughout the clip.
    So far I have tried:
    trashing prefs (main and user)
    using different accounts
    deleting caches
    using 1 / 2 monitors
    selecting different project format
getting rid of all my QT plugins
I should mention that I only installed iMovie 6 on the installer because I don't have much disk space for GarageBand and iDVD etc. on this machine. Those were all the things I could think of to try but chances are I'm being a complete spooner.
    Any help MUCH appreciated!

It sounds like the power inverter for the display has given out. I forget offhand if that is a separate part on MacBooks, so they may have to replace the entire display which would be pretty expensive.
And just for the record, it is a logical fallacy to think that experiences with one computer will apply to all computers like it. Some systems will die an early death, others will seemingly last forever, and most will be somewhere in between. Looks like yours is on the early side. Sorry, but this repair cost is likely going to hurt. Next time, I'd suggest holding out a little longer until you have enough cash for the AppleCare plan. But all you can do now is live and learn.

  • Preview of Ken Burns effect doesn't work with some pictures

I just recently installed a new graphics card (ATI Radeon 7500) on my Sawtooth, 1.2 GHz, so I could utilize the Ken Burns effect in imovie HD. It works but only partly. It works great but with some pictures the preview pane doesn't show the photo. What I see is a what looks like bad reception on an old TV (fuzzies and the picture is distorted so bad you can't even make it out). With other pictures the preview shows up fine. I'm sure I've loaded the drivers. What else can I do?

    Hi Tonyy13.
I am presenting the same problem. I can set the Ken Burns' effect while I am with the pictures before placing them in the Clip or Timeframe viewer. After placing them there, if I try to edit the picture (either by right clicking and choosing -edit picture or by control clicking and doing the same, I ended up with a black background. If you change the setting in this black ackground and update this changes they will be effective. So, you can change the slide duration, and everything in the sliders but without an image.
I was running System 10.3.9 and I thought this was the reason. Today, I went and bought Tiger but it didn't sove the problem. I do believe it is a bug in the program. According to Apple's Help and David Pogue's "The Missing Manual" this shouldn't happen.
If you solve this problem reply to this posting. If I did I will reply to your posting. Thank You.

  • Preview of Ken Burns Effect is a black screen!!

So, I am doing a movie for my parents, and I have 102 photos that I have loaded into IMovie. I loaded them in to the clips section, as I am not a huge fan of iPhoto personally. At first, no problems, but later, as I dragged photos into the playhead area, my photos wouldn't allow me to preview the Ken Burns Effect. I would drag them into the playhead, click on "Meda" button, and then select the Show Picture Settings button. The preview screen goes black as the effect scrolls through the process, disallowing me to see the preview. I have deleted the pictures from IMovie, re-inserted them, and started over (AAAARRRRRGGGGGG!), and it happened again.
Any Ideas? Thanks for the help!
Oh, and I have made no modifications to my machine (no new graphics card), and the pictures are all in .jpg format.

  • I have created a movie in 16:9 format. I have created an iDVD pane in 16:9 but when I preview the movie that pane changes to 4:3 and burns the DVD as a 4:3 movie. How can I stop that, please I am in Snow Leopard, using FCE4.0.1?

I am using Snow Leopard and have created a movie in 16:9 format (SD not HDV) I created a movie which stays in the 16:9 format in fcp file, .mov fiule and MP4 file. I created an iDVD pane in 16:9 but when I play the movie in the iDVD preview window the iDVD pane switches to 4:3 and it burns the DVD in 4:3. How can I stop this so I get a16:9 DVD. Hi
As I see this I see two parts
    • Howto go from FinalCut to iDVD
    • Howto set iDVD right
In FinalCut Express (to 4) or Pro (to 6 - most probably 7 too)
    • One has to set Anamorphic in the Browser window - menu columns
    • Export as QuickTime movie .mov - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION
In iDVD there are TWO places to set - WideScreen
    - Start a NEW iDVD project - AND HERE SELECT WideScreen 16:9
    - in Project - select Projectinfo
    - now set WideScreen 16:9 - Here too
This use to work for me.
    FOR FinalCut Pro-X - I have not a Clue - as I don't use it. SORRY
BTW - There is a good practice to before BURNING the DVD do
    • Save as a DiskImage
    • Test this by using DVD-Player tool
And if it is OK Size and All - then burn it by using
    • Disk Util tool
    • here set down burn speed to x4 or less (less burn errors = plays on more devices and better)
    • Not using Memorex or NoName etc cheap media - as they usually DO NOT WORK as Video-DVDs
    • I use Verbatim DVD-R as they play on more and even older DVD-players

  • Once I've burned a DVD by exporting photos so a pc can read them, is there a way to view them in iPhoto full screen without having to open each one in preview?

Once I've burned a DVD by exporting photos so a pc can read them, is there a way to view them full screen on my Mac without having to open each one in preview?

You would have to import them to iPhoto, iPhoto cannot work with images that are not in its library.
You might try some of the other viewers out there.

  • How can I save previews for old projects, while burning the project to DVD?

I'll admit, I haven't read the user manual cover to cover (or screen to screen for the electronic version), and haven't spent hours combing the discussions here, but I have searched for all the relevant keywords I can think of and can't find a concise answer to this question.
I get the basic idea of Vaults (I think), but haven't found much info about long term storage of projects. I'm fulltime freelance, but not super busy, and I can easily generate 100,000 images each year. I don't have the cash to be keeping all of these images in Aperture projects on external hard drives for eternity, and I'd be surprised if anyone else does. Good thing I'm not a medium format digital shooter producing 50GB each day huh?
I remember seeing a clip of a photographer 2 or 3 years ago discussing the differences between storing digital and film images. He was making the point that throwing away files you don't think you'll need again can be a mistake, citing a shot he had of Clinton and Lewinsky together, before Clinton and Lewinsky were news. "If I'd been shooting digital, that image wouldn't exist today". It was a great pic, and when that whoel scandal erupted, it made him alot of money.
So at present I'm storing every image I take in finished projects on DVD trusting that in the future I'll be looking for a shot of someone I may have shot 5, 10, 15 years ago.
I caught part of a discussion that talked about keeping the preview files for all the images (and subsequent versions) for each project. I'd love to be able to keep lo-res previews/copies of everything I've shot to date, and have them immediately accessible on my hard drive, while my full size projects are safely stored on DVD, taking up space on a bookshelf rather than on my hard drive. Loading 10 DVD's worth of projects to see what's inside them is a headache I'd like to avoid if possible, in favour of instantly checking out lo-res previews to look a shot up.
Is there an easy way to burn a completed project to DVD, but keep only the (lo res, lo size) previews on my hard drive?

    hello, kiwi
quote: "Is there an easy way to burn a completed project to DVD, but keep only the (lo res, lo size) previews on my hard drive?"
    yes.
    maybe,...
    1. you might think of making DVD backups first prior to importing the photos into Aperture. "Store Files: In their current location" once in Aperture make low rez Previews, and export finished Project.
    or,
    2. bring in the photographs to hard drive first prior to importing the photos into Aperture. "Store Files: In their current location" once in Aperture make low rez Previews, and export finished Project.
the low rez Previews will stay in Aperture but the high quality Versions will be exported onto DVDs and gone from the hard drive (if you delete the originals).
another way would be to export small about 50-70 pixel wide high quality jpegs to a folder on your Desktop and import & keep these in Aperture Library as a reference. make metadata to show where the original Project DVDs are stored and DVD filing system used.

    Hi
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an audio-CD .aiff
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
    (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provocing it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.
    176x144
    480x360
    640x480
    720x540    960x540
    4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    5. Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
    Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In
    6. Ed Hanna
Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies—except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format—that I have noticed.
    7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

  • Burned DVD does not produce the same result as the Encore 2.0 preview

Video captured directly into Adobe Premier Pro 2.0 from a Canon GL2 camera
Using an HP media center PC (Model M1270N)
    Pentium 4 (3.00 GHz)
    1.0 GB RAM
ATI Radeon X300SE PCI-E graphics card 128 MB DDR video memory
I purchased Adobe Creative Suite (Production Studio Premier) last month. Using Adobe Premier Pro 2.0 I produced two video
One video was 36:43 minutes. Original size was 8.35 GB, 7.9 bitrate
Second video was 37:41 minutes. Original size was 8.57 GB, 7.9 bitrate
I then brought them into Adobe Encore 2.0 and created a simple menu. Using the Preview from here button the menu and the videos had no problem. Using the Check Project button there were no errors. The disc information showed that there was 146.8 Mb free on a 4.7 GB disc after the project was transcoded.
Upon burning the DVD and putting it into a computer or a DVD player the first video played fine all the way through the second one within the last 3 minutes began skipping for the remainder of the video and then terminated as planned by going back to the menu.
Question: Is there any way to keep the last portion of the second video from skipping? I found the problem when I had sent the DVD off to a duplicator and the duplicator told us about the problem.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Kerry S.

    Hussman,
Glad that Playlists worked for you. DVD authoring can be a great learning experience, as a whole. The Encore part came pretty easy for me, but I had the help of many of the gurus in this forum, plus Jeff Belune's book, "Focal Easy Guide to EncoreDVD 2." Don't let the Encore 2 part throw you, as 95%+ of the info carries over to Encore CS3, and possibly CS4.
After the manual, Jeff's book, and the "Classroom in a Book EncoreXX," I find that just reading the posts in this forum is a big help. Almost every day I find a "wow, I didn't know you could do
    b THAT
with Encore," just by reading the stuff here.
Fortunately, my relationship with the program has been Love/Love, but maybe I've just been fortunate.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • IDVD will not burn DVD or preview

I made a DVD in IDVD and burned a DVD last week. I went back into IDVD to replace some photos and movies and when I tried to burn another DVD, the wheel spins and the progress screen comes up but does not progress or burn. I tried different DVDs but same result.
When I am in IDVD, I am also unable to preview the DVD project. I can open up the individual folders and see the photos & movies but when I go to preview it, nothing happens. Is the problem with IDVD? I have 5.01.

    Welcome to the iDVD forum....
    Try these steps first:
delete the iDVD plist file "com.apple.iDVD.plist"
repair disk permissions with disk utility
make sure you have 15-20GB of free space on your startup drive
    try again....

  • How do I put JPEGs in a burn folder without having them be aliases? I see the JPEGs in "Preview" but can't fugre out how to duplicate the originals so I can burn them without them being aliases.

How do I copy JPEGs that I see in "Preview" without getting aliases? I want to burn a new disk with copied originals, not aliases?

You can create a new folder and drag the originals into it and burn that as well, the "burn folder" concept just makes it easier to not to have to put everything away later.
Just delete the burn folder and your done.

  • Runs fine in preview, but doesn't work when burned

I've been running into a few nagging problems on iDVD 6...
When I preview what I've assembled in iDVD, it runs as intended -- an autoplay intro movie, then to the main menu.
When I've burned it to DVD, it starts with the intro movie, but then goes into a submenu instead of the main menu.
Any possible advice on what could be causing this?

    Welcome to the forums.
In terms of a sequence, is it possible you added the submenu movie to the project before adding the movie starting from the main menu? In other words, iDVD normally plays movies in the order they are added to the project (the buttons are links to the movies which can be cut and pasted to different menus).

  • Help Missing movie.  DVD not burning as shown in Preview

I created a DVD Project using 2 movies and one slideshow (separate buttons). Plays perfectly in the Preview within IDVD. I burned the disc, watched on the DVD Player, and the button that should have the first movie, plays the second movie. The other two buttons work correctly. Can't find the other movie anywhere.
I checked the Project Info. and it shows the correct asset listed for the missing first movie, also shows that it has encoded. The map view within IDVD looks correct also.
I have 17.23GB available still on my PowerBook.
    Any ideas???
