Burning Problem: does Toast interfere?

I have never been able to enjoy this DVD burner I have in my desktop G4. I've even swapped it out once already. I still can't burn DVDs. Here's what happens:
1) at stage 4, when it looks like the DVD will be burned, my Roxio toast application opens, and nothing else happens. If I close toast, it all shuts down (iDVD too). I tried using the Toast application system setup helper to shut off the automatic start up, but it just keeps opening.
2) So, I eliminated toast altogether (took it off the machine). Now, I get to stage 4 and get an error code from iDVD that reads:
"Errors were found during the burning process
Recording engine: Device is not supported for the requested burn opertation"
Can anyone out there give me a clue? I'd love to join the digital age and actually use my computer the way it was intended. What is wrong?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
J

I am not using Toast, and I have burned DVDs successfully now and then. I tried to clear up all the problems I can track down, such as clearing 30 GB of hard drive space, getting my files all on the same drive, etc. Recently I wanted to experiment with burning some photos onto a DVD and it told me to change my burn speed. That must be the reason that I am now getting the error message: "Errors were found during the burning process
The recording device reported the media error: Power calibration area error. (0x73, 0x03.)"
Does anyone know how to repair this problem?
This is driving me bonkers.

  • IDVD 6 Burn Problem , still

    Still having trouble.
I have been trying to burn a 2 hour 20 minute DVD for three weeks.
I have tried in iDVD 5 , where the progress bar would get to an 1/8 of an inch from the end and it would stop responding, with no success and now trying iDVD 6 to see if it is any better.
I have tried some things thing I found in the the discussion that made sense but still no sucess.
I have to mention here that I can burn this iMovie no problem with Toast 7 but it does not have all the cool things that iDVD has so I would like to get this going.
I notice in iDVD 6 I would get a message that I should switch to "Best Quality" to burn the DVD . I checked "Preferences" and it was set to Best Quality. Then I finally figured out that it was saying to change it in "Project Info" and when I did it was set to Best Performance and for a Single layer DVD. So I thought that was it. NOT! This may not be correct since I am trying to burn an image.
I tried to burn an Disc Image today and when I got home the Progress bar was at the end in the "Process Movie" phase. I checked the Activity Monitor which says that iDVD is not responding.
Can anyone help here? I am about to give up on iDVD period. Way too frustrating. Like I said , I can burn the same iMovie in Toast in 8 hours all day everyday. Not in iDVD 5 or 6.
    Thanks

I tried to burn an Disc Image today
From what I've read here, that's not a good idea. Seems to be issues with the break point. Direct to DVD+R DL. I can't find anything from Apple to that effect though.
I have been trying to burn a 2 hour 20 minute DVD for three weeks.
Maybe it's time to break it into two projects...? Or shorten it to less than 2 hours?

  • Burning project with Toast, not built in burn utility

okay so here's the sitch. got the project finished. but iDVD won't burn it or let me save an image cause it's like .2GB over the disc space for an SL disc and I don't have a DL burner. It just says 'remove content' but theres' nothing I can remove. The only stuff in there is stuff that has to be in there, not a footage second more or a menu more. I even took out the little movie that was going to autoplay at the front and all the menu audio hoping that would do it, but no.
in Toast, this wouldn't be a problem cause it can, and very nicely does, recompress the image just enough to fit it on the avail disc. But I need a way to shoot the project to Toast.

Hmmm, you're in a tough spot. Your iMovie production can be picked up in Toast and a DVD created, but your iDVD menus and themes belong to iDVD and won't make the jump. Here's the options I see:
    1) split the project in two and get higher resolution (lower compression) from spreading the material over 2 DVDs.
    2) be a tougher editor and remove DVDROM content, footage in your productions, etc.
    3) give up your iDVD menus and burn it in Toast (right click your iMovie video icon; Show Package Contents to find the Quicktime version of your video; drag it into Toast).
    4) find someone with DVD Studio Pro and import the iDVD project, using that more powerful compressor to shrink down your project, but retain your menus.
    5) figure out your double-layer burner options.

  • Fans run full speed on stand-by and burner problem iMac 24-inch early 2009

In standby sometimes the fans are running at full speed. Also with burning some CD or DVD's the burner makes an awful grunting sound.
For a 2 year old Mac I did not expect to have these kind of problems!
Resetting the iMac does not help. Might this be a Lion problem?
Optical Drive is running at 4800rpm, normal 798rpm
Hard Drive at 5903rpm, normal 1599rpm
    CPU at 3598rpm normal, 1200rpm
The burning problem only happens sometimes, not with all.

What did you do to reset the imac? Problems like these are "sometimes" solved with an SMC reset.

  • Mac Mini Burn Problem

    Hello,
I have been trying to burn a CD using my Mac Mini, which has a built in SuperDrive, but cannot complete large capacity burns. It can burn 14MB worth of photos/videos, but cannot complete a video CD burn, made with Toast 7, or an hour and five minute in length Audio burn with iTunes. It is reporting the following errors, in order:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
    Sense Code = 0x0C
    WRITE ERROR
    and then:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
    Sense Code = 0x30, 0x05
CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT
I have tried a lense cleaning disc, and two different types of CD, and it has made no difference. I have a feeling that the inside of the mini is quite dusty, so that might be the problem, but I'm afraid of actually opening it to clean it, in case I invalidate the warranty, and then left to pay to fix it myself. On the other hand, if I arrange for it to be looked at by Apple, and they find it is dust, then I might be charged for it anyway! So, I'm looking for advice/past experiences etc. please.
    Thanks Very Much,
    Thomas Wright.

I have DVD-RW discs from TDK, that I can burn no problem in my Mac mini, but cannot get the Power Mac to recognize when I'm trying to access files on them, keeps asking to initialize, even though the optical drive isn't a rewritable. I would like to replace the drive with a rewritable, what brand/model would work in OS 9?
In the past Pioneer drives have been a safe bet and are even bootable. However, check [Jeff's January 2010 post about re-branded Pioneer drives|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10839236#10839236] that are no longer really Pioneer manufactured.
You could start by looking at what's on www.macsales.com. I know you're in Oz but OWC is a good place for reference for Mac compatibility.

  • PE 7 - burn problem on DVD

    Hello,
I have already burned DVD in the past with menus with PE7 but now when I try to do it, the program crashes before strating burning the DVD.
I can export it to my computer but then I loose my menus.
    Anyone can help me please?
    Thanks in advance!
    Marc

    thanks for this as well.
I can certainly look for those information but the think that strikes me is that I already burned DVD with the same computer and had no problems doing so.
So my guess was that the problem could not be linked to my operating system if it already worked before.
If you think it could, I'll have to look for the detailed information you mention.

  • Burn problem - "internal target failure"

Can anybody help me with a burn problem that is driving me crazy, especially as I am a recent migrant from Windows. Every time I burn in iDVD from an iMovie I get the error message at the burn stage, i.e. after 2 hours encoding etc. "The recording device reported the hardware error: internal target failure (0x44,0x00)". This is after reporting the problem to my dealer and having the Superdrive replaced under guarantee. Any ideas gratefully received.

    Welcome to iDVD Discussions.
That may be a media/burning speed issue.
I recommend a disk image burned to Verbatim DVD-R at 4X or slower using Toast or Disk Utility.
David Pogue also recommends Verbatim on page 356 of his latest book:
iMovie HD & iDVD 6: The Missing Manual
Quoting David: "Cheaper brands don't use the same amount of organic dyes and are more likely to suffer premature deaths."
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/18.html
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/image_to_diskstone.html
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • Influencing query security - burning problem

    Hi all,
I've a burning problem that I was not able to find a solution for within 1 week so far.
I want to simplyfy a selection of variables needed to run a query. So in fact you need three different values to identify a specific set of data. In order to not have the user to enter those 3 independent values, with all the risk of selecting invalid combinations, I created a new InfoObject that holds the three infoobjects (and some more) as attributes. So the user selects only one and I'm doing the work behind the scenes using user exit variables. I've created a multiprovider to combine the two cubes and the infoobject. The value that the user is selecting fron the "dummy" object needs to be excluded from the selection otherwise he'll see no data. This works very well so far, but as soon as security comes into play I run into problems. With security activated on the dummy infobject, the F4 help screen that allows the user to select what he wants to se is restricted, so it only shows the values that he's cleared for. Which is fine. When he selects one of the values it will be excluded as I#m using a selection option variable (no authorization variable) as the default of the variable needs to
be exclusion and not include. When the query then is executed I'm getting a message that the user is not authorized to read the security object (BRAIN804). So I probably will need a security variable, but this is not working to do what I need as a authorization variable gets populated with all the values that the user is cleared for. I only want one value and that should be picked fro the list.
Also this value need to be excluded otherwise I'll see no data as the dummy infobj. is not contained in the other two cubes.  Have restricted the query to only use the two cubes and not the infobj. but as long I don't exlude the value it will retrieve no data.
Now my question - how can I influence the behavior of the security variable ? Remove some values via user exit, switch from inclusion to exclusion
or just use the security entries to read them and build the contents of the F4 help.
So any idea - answer is highly appreciated.
    Bernd Dümmel
    Eastman KODAK

    Arun,
I was able to resolve the problem by adding # to the restrictions. That allowed me to be able to switch from exclude to include on the variable the user does the input. This also allowed me to switch the variable from selection option to single value. In doing this I then could add the authorization variable to the restrictions as well. Now the F4 list is restricted (based on the authorizations of the user) and all the security is working. So without the trick with the # value I would have needed to implement security within some user exits.
    Thanks
    Bernd

  • BURNING PROBLEM - BUFFER UNDERRUN

    Hi!
There is a problem: i have brand new G5 quad and i can't burn dvd's from idvd or dvd studio pro - i have same problem - first computer tells me 'writing led-in data' and after a few attempts i have alert about buffer underrun. What funny is - i can properly burn dvd's from finder! Can anybody tell me what is going on? Don't tell me about no name dvd's - i'm using good brand and i can trust them.

Are you creating a disc image and burning that to a disc or are you attempting to burn directly to a disc? Unless you need dual-layer support, I would HIGHLY recommend against burning directly to disc. Both iDVD and DVDSP allow you to create a disc image of your projects.
If you cannot burn your disc image to a disc, then chuck the media (not literally) and find yourself a different brand of media. I also recommend using Toast instead of Finder or Disk Utility to burn your disc image with... you have much more control over the burn speed with Toast.
Also, you have burned DVDs using iDVD or DVDSP before, correct? Just want to make sure that this isn't your first stab at it... you might be building your projects incorrectly.

  • How can I work around a DVD burning problem

Steve Grisetti: How can I work around a DVD burning problem?
Question: Does PSE and PE -7 solve this problem or make any difference at all?

This article, from the FAQ list at the top of this forum, is valid for all versions, since it may be a problem for any.

The problem is not so much with Premiere Elements as it is with challenges faces in the operating system registry. Basically, DVD burner programs, like Nero, which are installed on your computer at the factory, refuse to share access to the DVD burner with other programs.

I was able to burn DL DVD's with 10.4.11, which is what shipped with my MBP when I purchased it. I haven't had need to burn a another DL DVD until now, approx 4 months later.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions on this? At this point I'm pondering waiting to see if 10.5.2 resolves the issue. If not, I suppose a trip to the Genius Bar is in order.

  • Random Reboots / CDRW Burning Problems

I just thought I would post a note regarding these two issues, because I had both of them and found a resolution for each.  On the spontanious reboot (or blue screen issue, if you instruct XP to not reboot after blue screens), I exchanged my K7N2G-ILSR for the same board and the machine is now rock solid.  I still continued to have burning issues (I couldn't burn in Music Match, Windows XP built in burning software, or Nero), and found that nVidia's nForce chipset drivers caused this problem.  If you are experiencing this problem too I suggest doing a driver rollback if your running XP to the stock IDE drivers and this issue will go away.  Apparently it makes the cdrom and hard drives show up as SCSI devices that most burning software does not know how to work with.  Patching Nero or MusicMatch did not fix the issue either, I simply had to do the rollback and now my machine runs great!
    Hope this helps someone.

See... I thought power supply at first too... I tried unplugging all my DVD dri'ves, and pulled 2 sticks of mem out, disconnected one of my 2 SATA dri'ves, and removed my SATA Raid controller from the machine, and it still did the same thing. I'm running with a 450W PSU... seems to work fine. The odd thing is, I woke up this morning, plugged everything back in, and started testing again, and now I'm not able to reproduce the problem. I think there may be something wrong with the card itself as I was purchased referb from creative... but all diagnostics pass. Anyway, it seems fine now, but I'm still really concerned since, I didn't really do anything specific to fix it. Is it a problem that the sound card is listed on IRQ 20? My understanding is that some devices don't like to be placed on IRQs above 6 because windows basically emulates IRQs above 6. Is this true, or am I just confused?

  • HT5429 How long after you report a problem does it take for the fix to be picked up in maps?

How long after you report a problem does it take for the fix to be picked up in maps? The street I live on is misspelled. It's shown as one word, but it should be two words. Maps cannot find the address when it is spelled correctly, so I have it purposely misspelled it as one word in my contacts, which helps for the most part, however it still tries to place my home on an entirely different street all together. Fortunately this new random street is at least close to where I live. When I used to spell my street correctly with two words, maps would try to send me to the next town over. So it kind of works, as long as I misspell my street, and ignore the fact that it is showing where I live to be a couple of streets down from where I actually live. I live in Connecticut - not in the most populated of areas, but not in the middle of nowhere either. Amazingly enough Google Maps will correctly find my address whether it's spelled with one words or two words. Google Maps also shows my apartment complex, which Apple Maps does not. I really wish Apple would just do a quick pass of the area to fix these issues. I’ve reported the problem several times, months ago. How long will it take for there to be a fix? I keep trying to use the Apple ecosystem, but Google is clearly the better solution for me.

Apple does not do the GIS data for maps. That comes from 3rd party vendors like Tom Tom. I have read it takes some time to update map data. The only thing you can do is report it.
Not to belittle your complaint, but on my end it is Apple that is clearly better. When looking at my house in Google, the satellite photo is more than 4 years old, and the Apple one is much newer. I can tell because of the condition of my home and the neighbor's. They had an above ground pool which was removed 4 years ago and it shows on the Google Map. I had remodeling and roof work done to my home that started 3 years ago and Apple's satellite view showed this work done, which took over a year to complete. I live in the middle of a block in a rural town. Both Apple and Google split the block into 100 parts and put my home close to the beginning of the block instead of where it actually sits. I've reported it to both Google and Apple and no one has changed. Just one of those things. But, keep your chin up, it will get corrected eventually.

If you're not using chrome you can just go to adobe's website (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/) and download the newest flash player.  You run the .dmg and then open the application, which updates flash.  With the latest version of flash there should be a preference pane within system preferences to allow you to change settings and check for updates.
