Burning Question (unreliable Toast)

Hi.
A problem and some questions.
My Toast (6.1.1) keeps freezing and Force Quit doesn't work.
I have deleted pref files (found two), reinstalled, cretaed new user, to no avail.
That's the problem. Now the Q's:
1
I prefer Toast over DVDSP as you can control burning speed. But having said this, I did burn today from DVDSP (I have the bundled version that comes with FC Studio 5) and it plays well on two stand alone DVD players I tried. I used Verbatim X16 media. Is burning speed still an issue?
2
If I go buy Toast 7 will it stop hanging on me?
3
Any ideas as to how I can fix my Toast?
(First thing this morning I was able to use Toast, the computer had been off all night... does that make a difference?)
Thanks a mill,
D

I prefer Toast also. As to the speed issue, it may be a non issue if they are playing okay. Where are the DVDs going? Clients? Friends & family? Youself? If clients then you need to be absolutely sure (different story if replicating discs and this is just samples, you can explain the issue of whaat cause playback problems from time to time), the later, you can always fix it.

Sounds like you did some of the troubleshooting, have you tried also repairing permissions or run diskwarrior? Sounds like if shutting it off then starting it up cured the problem, the boot up clean up repairs may have helped. Are you using an external Burner? Do you have any FW peripherals attached? Sometimes I have had hangs like that from bad cables or power supply coming slightly off, look liked power but not really getting to the device. After the reinstall to you go back to 6.1.1 (or is that your install?) I had an earlier version of 6 that I had to upgrade to 6.1.1.
Has the sytem changed recently? (It sounds like Toast had been okay until now?)

  • Burning project with Toast, not built in burn utility

okay so here's the sitch. got the project finished. but iDVD won't burn it or let me save an image cause it's like .2GB over the disc space for an SL disc and I don't have a DL burner. It just says 'remove content' but theres' nothing I can remove. The only stuff in there is stuff that has to be in there, not a footage second more or a menu more. I even took out the little movie that was going to autoplay at the front and all the menu audio hoping that would do it, but no.
in Toast, this wouldn't be a problem cause it can, and very nicely does, recompress the image just enough to fit it on the avail disc. But I need a way to shoot the project to Toast.

Hmmm, you're in a tough spot. Your iMovie production can be picked up in Toast and a DVD created, but your iDVD menus and themes belong to iDVD and won't make the jump. Here's the options I see:
    1) split the project in two and get higher resolution (lower compression) from spreading the material over 2 DVDs.
    2) be a tougher editor and remove DVDROM content, footage in your productions, etc.
    3) give up your iDVD menus and burn it in Toast (right click your iMovie video icon; Show Package Contents to find the Quicktime version of your video; drag it into Toast).
    4) find someone with DVD Studio Pro and import the iDVD project, using that more powerful compressor to shrink down your project, but retain your menus.
    5) figure out your double-layer burner options.

  • Burning Problem: does Toast interfere?

I have never been able to enjoy this DVD burner I have in my desktop G4. I've even swapped it out once already. I still can't burn DVDs. Here's what happens:
    1) at stage 4, when it looks like the DVD will be burned, my Roxio toast application opens, and nothing else happens. If I close toast, it all shuts down (iDVD too). I tried using the Toast application system setup helper to shut off the automatic start up, but it just keeps opening.
    2) So, I eliminated toast altogether (took it off the machine). Now, I get to stage 4 and get an error code from iDVD that reads:
"Errors were found during the burning process
Recording engine: Device is not supported for the requested burn opertation"
Can anyone out there give me a clue? I'd love to join the digital age and actually use my computer the way it was intended. What is wrong?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    J

I am not using Toast, and I have burned DVDs successfully now and then. I tried to clear up all the problems I can track down, such as clearing 30 GB of hard drive space, getting my files all on the same drive, etc. Recently I wanted to experiment with burning some photos onto a DVD and it told me to change my burn speed. That must be the reason that I am now getting the error message: "Errors were found during the burning process
The recording device reported the media error: Power calibration area error. (0x73, 0x03.)"
Does anyone know how to repair this problem?
    This is driving me bonkers.

  • Burning bluray - no Toast

I just bought this external Blu Ray drive (LG BP06) thinking I would have to buy Toast to burn files to a disc. It didn't come with any software (it has a DVD for windows but I never inserted it in my Mac).  Surprisingly, it worked just like a regular DVD!!!
I checked the size and all the files are there (23GB out of 25 max).  I wonder why everybody says you need Toast and nothing in Lion doc says you can burn BluRay discs.
So I am not marking this as a question since I have no problem, just curious how it works.
    Thanks

Burning Bluray data disks have not been a problem on Macs
since the later versions of Snow Leopard.  Where the issue
arises is the file system support for burning Blurays as
movie disks playable on commercial Bluray players.  Also
may be some other details as well.
This is where software like Toast is required.

  • Maximum length of film to burn DVD on Toast

    Hi Panel
Thanks again for all your help - new question. My film is 1 hr and 20 minutes long - can I burn this at best quality in Toast - or must I keep to 60 minutes? I am in a rush as this film must be ready for Sunday - I can't experiment either as I don't have an individual DVD player - my last effort I had to go up country to view it - thats why I took so long to tell you thanks. When I exported my first project to Quick Time full quality it knocked off the last 4 clips - the movie was only 42 minutes long - but Toast didn't tell me until it reached the end of the burn - than said 4 clips unsupported and DVD failed - you could still play the DVD but the player complained that the DVD had an error on it - don't really like to play the DVD like that in case it harms the player. That is why I am asking your advice. I can remove 12 minutes of movie but it would be a shame - but I'll still be longer than the 60 minutes by 7 minutes.
    Can you advise?
    Many thanks

  • DVD audio burning question

Hi. [Sorry, I'm new here incase it's in the wrong catagory]
I'm a switcher from PCs to a Mac.
I've got a question; I have some audio files that are in a 6 channel DTS audio format. Is there a way I can burn them on a DVD and preserve the DTS audio? I bought Final Cut Studio 2 with my Mac and it's saying that it doesn't recognize the files.
Any help I can get would be great.
    Thanks a lot!

    Hey Kevin
Toas should allow you to "copy" a DVD from one drive to another, so I'd put the master into your Mac, and the blank DVD into your new drive, open Toast, click the "Copy" tab, and you should be good to go.

  • Can't burn CD w/ Toast because it's 6MB too large for disc

I have a set of files, .img .ccd and .sub, I'm trying to burn (or just view, it's a movie), I've tried viewing in VLC, burning using Burn, converting to a .bin file and then mounting, nothing's worked so far so I got Toast Titanium because you're supposed to be able to mount the .img file and then either
    1) Save to Disc as an .iso, and go from there, but when I click on the .iso image/file I get the error message "Not Recognized", or
    2) Mount it and copy it to a CD, and go from there, but I get the error message that 708.8MB of space are needed and only 702.8MB are available--the CD is brand-new, never-used (CD-R), and you can't use DVDs from my understanding.
Are there any other options? I looked around a lot on Google and there's something about MacPorts but it involves all kinds of use with the Terminal, if there's some way of not having to go that route it would be great.

whyever not? anything you can burn on a CD you can also burn on a DVD. just try a DVD-R disk.

  • Burning dvd's (Toast alternatives)

I'm still using Roxio Toast 8 to burn audio cd's, data disks and dvd's. The last one by burning a Video_TS folder. Toast 8 still works, but for example the progress window is now blank so I can't see what's going on. Toast 8 is to old to update. So I'm looking for an alternative. Any AppStore apps which do the same thing I do when using Toast? So: burning audio CD's, data CD's, copy discs, creating DVD's from video files and burning a Video_TS folder to work as a DVD?

The size of your pre-encoded video files is moot. iDVD will convert your files to mpeg-2 in order to burn the DVD, and when it does so all it cares about is run-length.
Depending upon your iDVD settings, you can fit up to 2 hours on a single-layer DVD. Be aware that that also includes menus and other resources that are in your iDVD project.

  • Burned DVD in Toast 9 will not play in DVD Player

I used Toast 9 to burn a DVD from a Video_TS folder. The DVD plays fine on my Mac, but will not work on any other DVD Player. The Video is in PAL format and I am using a DL DVD - any suggestions??

Since I don't know what region you are in, it's hard to answer but if you are in the USA then you can't play PAL on most set top DVD Players. You have to have NTSC standard.

  • External cd burner questions...

O.K. folks, my lame questions of the day.
I have a G3 iBook (specs below) with cd read only. I have a Sony CRX 1600L firewire cd burner that I would like to use to back up my iTunes purchases.
I used this a few months ago and somehow, (gulp) fried my HD. I think that what I did wrong was disconnecting the burner from the iBook without ejecting properly. That, I believe is why i'm the proud owner of a new 60 GB hd. I'm a little gun shy now, can you blame me? Problem is is that my iTunes purchases are g-r-o-w-i-n-g! (Backed up on my iPod).
So here the questions, when connecting the burner to the Mac are both off then power them up? Should one or the other be powered before the other?
I really don't want to buy another HD again, so if their is a logical, sequential order of using/ connecting external firewire devices I'd love to be educated. (Both the iBook and Sony cd burner were a packaged deal from ebay, so no manuals).
Also is their a way to export music from an iPod to another authorized Mac?
    Thank you in advance,
    Lee

Since you don't have the discs, you may want to be a little more conscientious about maintenance:

    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintainingmacosx.html
You can use Safe Mode any time that Repair Disk from the OS X 10.3 Install CD is recommended. However, if things have gone downhill badly, sometimes you can start up from the CD (you don't have) when you can't start up at all from the hard drive (including starting up in Safe Mode).
If you don't leave the iBook on 24/7 (as I do mine; I just sleep the display), you will want to use some utility or run the maintenance routines through Terminal. I leave mine on all the time so they run automatically overnight.
I'd be looking for those discs, Lee, before you need them.

  • External DVD Burner Questions

I am looking into purchasing an external firewire/USB 2.0 DVD burner with Lightscribe for my PowerMac G5. I have 2 questions: 1) Do Apple stores (at the mall) sell DVD burners? I cannot remember if I seen one there or not. 2) What burner would you recommend? I need one with Lightscribe and would like to have firewire. The USB 2.0 is not necessary. I want an external drive if possible as well. Thank you for your help and advice!

Be aware that lightscribe technology is still quite in its infancy and others have had trouble with it. In addition, any attempt to label disks often yields in unstable shorter-lived disks than leaving the existing label side empty. I use jewelcase inserts to keep track of my disks.
If you must get lightscribe, some Apple Stores do sell LaCie Lightscribe drives occasionally. I've not always seen it there, and it really depends on the stock. You can look up places like http://www.macconnection.com/ http://www.maczone.com/ http://www.cdw.com/ and http://www.macsales.com/ for possible compatible drives. In addition, http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ has a good drive database to search from compatible drives.

  • Can ITunes be burned using Roxie Toast?

I have a internal burner and I use Toast to burn all my stuff The mac burning software is way to slow!!! Can ITunes be burned using a newer version of Toast? doe it have to be a OS 10 Version so it works??? I am using Toast Lite 6.0.7L but does not work with burning ITunes. Will Toast Titanium @ $79.99 work???
    Thanks

Toast does support AAC (m4a) but not Protected AAC (m4p).
Older versions of Toast did support P. AAC, but Roxio had to remove the feature.
This is part of the Toast 6.1 Version history:
Following discussions with Apple, this version will no longer allow customers to create audio CDs, audio DVDs, or export audio to their hard drive using purchased iTunes music store content.
All versions of QuickTime after 6.5.2. also prevent burning protected music (other than with iTunes).
This is what it says when I drag a protected song to Toast 7.0.2 (the latest version):
    "Songname" was not added.
Only Apple applications, such as iTunes, are
    permitted to burn purchased content.

  • Quick cd burning question

i have just recently switched from a mac to a pc running arch. So far i love arch and how customizable the package selection is. I just have a question as to burning cd's. I have a few .dmg files that are for a mac. My friend is needing a copy these files but i dont want him to have them. Since my mac is no longer of use i got rid of it. Is there any application for arch that will allow me to burn a dmg file. I have ran both gnomebaker and k3b and both programs do not see a dmg file as a valid iso file. PLEASE HELP

I've not tested it, but maybe dmg2iso.pl works.

  • Double Sided DVD format burning question

    Hi,
I have the latest version of DVDSP and wish to know if it is possible to burn a each side of double sided DVD in different formatts. Specifically, I wish to make one side a DVD disc, and the other side a DVD ROM disc that will contain AIFF or MP3 files to be imported into iTunes or simply played, by double clicking on the files, from the DVD disc itself. I would assume to burn the DVD ROM side, I would use the finder, or Toast, correct?
    thanks in advance.

    Ari,
There are a number of places you can get double sided media, here's an example:
    http://www.meritline.com/meritline/dvd-r-blank-media-94.html
You can indeed have dvd video on one side, and dvd rom material on the other. I would make a couple of cautionary notes however. One, unless there is great disparity between the size of the content on one side or the other (the larger the content in size, the larger the 'burn' ring on that particular side), then it will be hard to tell which side you have in before playing. There are small, inner ring labels that you can apply, but I'm personally not a big fan of sticky labels. Two, it's easy for the user to damage one side or the other since there is no 'label side' to use when handling the disc. It doesn't take very much in terms of a finger smudge or scratch to make a disc perform poorly on some computers or set top players.
Alternatives would obviously be to have two separate, single sided discs. If the total content (your dvd video and separate audio files) is less than a single sided disc, then you could put them all on a single sided disc and burn it through DVDSP with the added ROM content folder with your audio files. It should play the video content just fine, and the user can just open the folder on the disc and import/use the audio files. If the content would exceed a single layer, single sided disc; then a dual layer, single sided disc would be another option.
