Burning smartplaylist vs playlists

Is there a difference in burning discs between a smart playlist and a regular playlist?
For technical reasons it's been several months since I've been able to update my iPod (hard drive crash etc.).
Once I got the right tools, I moved everything from my iPod to a new external hard drive and then also moved music from two back up drives onto the new drive.
So... I kept all the original music that was on my iPod (60 gig fourth generation I believe) and added some of the other stuff.
I use my iPod primarily as a yoga teacher. I use smart playlist to randomly create playlists for my classes.
Last night I tried to burn some of the playlists onto CD and none of the smart playlists would give me the option to burn.
I created a normal playlist on the hard drive but literally had to then locate each individual song from the hard drive and drag and drop it into the list. This was a real drag. Even then there were a few songs that just wouldn't let me move them.
I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong?
One other point in case it makes a difference. When I moved all my music from two smaller externals to a larger one, I went in and changed the names of some of the folders... i.e. a folder that was called Beatles, got changed to just The Beatles.
Could this make any difference, and if so, how would I fix it?
Not being able to burn these playlists is a real bummer

I figured it out. Apparently I've been doing things kind of backwards. Instead of doing all my creation on the computer and then moving things to the iPod, I've been creating lists on my iPod which of course hinders the burning process et. al.

    Hi,
Create a play list that you wish to burn. Select playlist, the file from main menu which gives to an option to burn the playlist. A pop up box appears allowing you to select burn speed and disc format.

  • Is it possible to burn my iTunes playlist to a SD card?

I cannot seem to transfer (burn) an iTunes playlist to a SD card. I eventually want my entire library on SD cards to free up space on my MacBook Pro and iPhone. My Jeep does not have a CD player. Just Bluetooth and SD card slot. So CD format is not an option.

You should be able to copy via drag and drop to the SD card - I don't have any SD cards to play with, but it works for me going to USB drives.  I don't have any experience in this, but I'd expect problems with syncing your iPhone if you remove songs from your Library.
What you'll need to do is put iTunes into Song view and select the playlist you want.  You'll need to copy the individual songs - Dragging the name of the playlist won't work.
    Good luck

  • Problems with burning an ipod playlist

Every time I try to burn a playlist a window comes up halfway through and says: An error has occured: 4261. I don't know what this means but it is stopping me from burning playlists to CD. I am using Sony CD-R discs which I believe are the write discs to use. Before attempting to burn the playlist every song was ticked. The songs were from my own CDs as I have had no joy burning downloaded songs to disc either. Of the playlist that is made up from my own CDs, I made ten attempts to burn this playlist but to no avail. The only time it did burn the full playlist I took out the CD and put it into my CD player. But this was no good as every track was skipping and the CD had become scratched in the burning process. There is nothing wrong with my CD player as it does not do this to my other CDs and I have had no problems playing CDs on my computer. It's just that itunes won't let me burn to CD. Any help would be appreciated.

If the songs on the iPod aren't in iTunes you need to copy them back there in order to burn them to CD. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod

  • Every since I upgraded to iTunes 12 I am not able to burn a certain playlist to a disc.  Other playlists will burn, but not this certain one.

All other playlists will burn fine, but not this one.  I can even burn these individual songs to a disc but as soon as I put them all together in a play list and attempt to burn it to a disc it says, "The attempt to burn a disc failed.  The disk could not be read from or written to".  I have tried multiple discs, but it doesn't help.  I have even used some of the discs that didn't work to burn this particular playlist, to burn OTHER playlists.  I have tried moving the songs around in a different order also.  Nothing seems to work.  I have never had this problem before and I am not sure what to do about it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!!!

  • HT202677 Cancel burning a long playlist into multiple Cds half way through?

How do I stop/cancel burning a playlist into multiple Cds half way through?
    Thank you!!

Although iTunes supposedly has the ability burn a long playlist across multiple audio CDs, in practice the capability is buggy and error-prone, and always has been.  Do not even use it.  Split the playlist into individual playlists, each comfortably under 80 minutes, and burn them one at a time.

  • How can I burn my existing playlists?  Can I do it without loading into the cloud?

I cannot find "burn to disc" under file for my Ipod music not in the cloud.  How do I burn those existing playlists without loading into the cloud?

Copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.
The ipod is not a backup/storage device.

  • I copied a smart playlist to a regular playlist in order to change the order of the individual selections.  I then burned the regular playlist to a cd, but the cd burned it in alphabetical order as it appears on the smart playlist.

I changed the order, then burned a cd but the cd copied the songs in the order of the smart playlist, which was alphabetical.  What am i doing wrong in this scenario, and is there a way to change the song order in a smart playlist?  I am a new MAC user.  Is this unique to the MAC format?

I'm trying to figure out a way to make a playlist of songs I generally like from a very large library to fit on my iPod. The songs aren't rated, and I don't want to have a totally random selection chosen by a smart playlist.
    I usually make two playlists.
One playlist with favorites I do want on the iPod and another smart playlist to fill the rest of the iPod. Just limit the size to th esize of the iPod minus wthe size of my iPod selection playlist.

  • Itunes freezes when I attempt to burn CD from playlist

When I try to burn a CD from a playlist, all goes well until I click on to the pulsating "Burn Disc" Icon. Then, itunes freezes. I cannot execute any function at that point other than to use Windows Task Manager to shut down itunes. I read the posts in this section and tried the remedy of installing the GEAR installer to remove gearsec.exe and GEARSEC security with GEARsoftware. Contrary to the instructions, the software never asked me if I wanted gearsec.exe removed. That didn't solve the problem. This is a new problem that I did not experience in the past as I have burned several CD's from itunes before. I am now using itunes version 4.9.0.17 with Windows XP (Home Edition) with SP2. hi Robert!
I am using Roxio Easy Media Creator 7. (version 7.1.1.189 to be precise). I have no other CD burning software but I do have an Iomega external hard drive connected USP2. The software that comes with that is Iomega Automatic Backup v3.2.
no, i can't find anything relevant to do with conflicts with those packages. I'm not sure it's worth trying to uninstall 7.1 just to see what happens. (given that it's actually
    b working
    at the moment.)
curses. okay, at this point in time, all i can suggest is to start wading through our sea of documentation on burning problems. i believe you've already seen some of this, so apologies in advance:

and then it's into the holding pattern ... keep checking the links to Apple docs, because they get updated. keep refreshing the thread with a post every now and then, in case we've been able to accumulate some more relevant working wisdom on the forums.
sorry i couldn't be of more help.

  • Burn 7 times (Playlist or individual MP4 file)

I buy the new Daughtry album. I create a new Playlist and call it Daughtry S/T and drag the songs into it. Now I can burn that playlist 7 times. If I cahnge the name of the Playlist to Daughtrt 1st CD does this give me a new 7 times or are the individual files themselves recorded 7 times. Thank you.

So in essence you could keep slightly altering the name of a playlist thus making the amount of times you burn said tracks is endless. Just that single name playlist is no good after 7

  • Error Message when trying to burn CD  from Playlist

Never had this problem before, but when I try to burn a playlist, I get the error message "there is a file whose file is bigger than that of a blank CD. You need to insert a blank DVD." Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong. Thanks in advance for your help

Thanks for your reply, but that was not the case. I closed out Itunes and and reopened it and the exact same playlist burned with no problem. So it could not have been a file was too large. Again thanks

  • When apple no longer includes an optical drive how are you going to burn an itunes playlist

when apple no longer includes an optical drive how are you going to burn an itunes playlist

Well, I don't want to buy an optical drive if I buy a new Mac without one. However, iTunes will not allow "burning" a playlist to anything except a real optical drive.
Now, I am not running Mountain Lion so I don't know if iTunes for Mountain Lion allows it or not - could someone please let me know if it is possible.
For me, on Snow Leopard, I cannot find a way to burn, create, duplicate - whatever you want to call it - a playlist to a virtual drive, a USB drive - nothing but a physical drive.
It just makes me wonder if iTunes provides (will provide) an alternative when there is no physical drive included.

  • Recording level is too low when burning CD from playlist

When burning a CD from playlist, the resulting CD has a lower recording level than in the original recordings.  How can I adjust this?

It sounds like you are having a similar problem to the one I was having when I was downloading my cds to itunes. The whole album would download but some of the songs would be on a different thumbnail instead of in the same album. Although the albums had the "artist" listed already it would still go to a separate thumbnail. It took me a while to search and figure it out through trial and error but if you right click on the album and when the tab pops up you go to "get info" and select "yes" you want to "edit information for multiple items" you must input the "album artist" and it will automatically import it into the correct album it originally came from. Some of them you have to input the information manually through the "get info". Hope this helps!!!
