Burning speed only 4x max.

Hi Everybody,
Ever since upgrading to 5.0.1.4. my burning speed has dropped to only 4x maximum! That takes almost 20 minutes to burn a cd. I took b noir's advice and updated the firmware of the CD drive, but no difference.
Here are my CD diagnostics:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
iTunes 5.0.1.4
CD Driver 2.0.4.3
CD Driver DLL 2.0.3.2
LowerFilters: PxHelp20 (2.0.0.0), AFS2K (3.1.14.0),
UpperFilters: GEARAspiWDM (2.0.4.3),
Video Driver: MOBILITY RADEON \MOBILITY RADEON

USBSTOR\DiskSony___MSC-U04________3.00, Bus Type USB
IDE\CdRomMATSHITAUJ-812_________________________K103___, Bus Type ATA, Bus Address [0,0]
If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.
Current user is administrator.

Get drive speed succeeded.
The drive CDR speeds are: 4.
The drive CDRW speeds are: 4.
The drive DVDR speeds are: 4 0.

Any help would deeply be appreciated.
Best regards
Roman

Roman,
Have you been to the Sony support site to look for a new ATA driver? If you go to that main page, click the "detect my model" link. Look for a driver update, probably labeled something like "Intel Chipset Driver".
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl?PRODTYPE=24&NAVDISP=pc
I can't find the model number you gave me manually, so I can't look for you.
But you know, the drive speed listed in the CD diagnostics clearly say that the drive is reporting that it can only burn at 4x with the media you have in there. This is media dependent. Have you tried other brands / kinds of media?

  • Max DVD burn speed 2x!?!

Hey all, is anyone else not getting full burn speed on their iMacs? Mine only gives me the option of 2x as the fastest. My external LaCie will let me burn at 4x with the same media. What gives?

Let me see if I can help out.
Just because your drive says it is capable of 8X doesn't mean it will burn at 8X.
Depending on what you are using to try to burn with in the way of software, I suggest you burn at a slower Speed. like 2X. Apples Software is entry level and it works but many users find harder to use than the top of the line in burning software like Roxio's Toast 7.
Here is the explination on the different DVD's.
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
Just bear one thing in mind.
When it comes to DVD Players, Formats, and Burners, of the hundreds of different manufactures, All are opting to be the Industry Standard, and it appears they insert there little chinks that almost force users to use there products exclusively.
There is always a backlash from these marketing ploys.
In a perfect world you would think any DVD would work in any DVD Player and Computer but sorry it is not so there are so many things that come into play. Format, Speed, Brand, Software used. Any one or combination can affect the process.
    The problem is multi-dimensional.
First check in your particular profiler on EXACTLY what type(FORMAT) of DISK's your burner will burn.
Next please do not just randomly go out and buy a spool of 30 50 or 100 disc's because they are on sale.
There is a HUGE difference in the type format disc's you buy
There is also a HUGE difference in the BRAND you choose, some are junk.
There is also a HUGE Difference in the SPEED of the media you choose.
If any one or a combination of any of the 3 mentioned above can cause burn error's or no burn at all or spit the disk out.
So it is a good idea to do a little homework on your Optical Drive and see just exactly what it is capable of and what it will use for media.
    (ONE LAST NOTE)
Many of the Media Manufactures are becomming aware that many of the Apple Burners are having trouble with there Media. Maxell has just come out with a brand new one that is. Maxell 16X DVD-R.
The key is read the packaging. this new media tells you that it will burn at any speed from 1X through 16X, and it works very well on the older Optical Drives. I also opt to use the individual that include the cases there seems to be much better quality, not like that of the spools.
Remember Apples Drives to date are much pickier than those used in the PC community.
    Cheers Don

    Should I burn at 8x or 16x?

    Hi
In iDVD up to version 6 You can't set burn speed.
    In iDVD08 and 09 - You can
If You use Roxio Toast™ - You can
Apple Disk Util tool - You can set here too
If You don't select iDVD sets speed acordingly to DVD disk eg x16
As faster - as many write errors
I use x1 when able to select
On older iDVD I use DVD x2 disks.
    I would
    • Use iDVD to do a DiskImage
    • Use Disk Util tool or Toast™ to make the burn at x1 speed
Using iDVD 4 - then You need a Hack to make it able to do the DiskImage

  • DVD-R and CD-R Burn Speeds Slow after Tiger

Hi, I just installed Tiger a few weeks ago and noticed that when I am in the finder and record or burn a CD-R, it does so at 8X max, and a DVD-R data disc burns at 1X only, instead of the 2X its supposed to do it. Any help is welcomed.
Also having problems when inserting a DVD-R, it no longer askes what to open (IDVD, finder, DiskUtility) even if I never checked the always do this, it automatically opens IDVD everytime and doesnt let me open it in the finder. The solution for this is that I have to place the IDVD application on a External Harddrive and then insert the disk and I get the dialog box again, but once I pass the application back to the applications folder it always defaults into opening that.

Your burning speed isn't determined by your operating system, it's determined by your SuperDrive. So if you have an 8X max for CD-R and 1X for a DVD-R that's what you're stuck with.
You can however reflash your firmware to trick your drive into ripping and burning a little faster. Shoot me an e-mail at [email protected] and I'll e-mail you the info on how to do it. It's been a while, so I have to look up the file again. Also, be sure that's the SuperDrive you have because the new firmware is drive specific!

  • DVD burner speed

When I first got my computer (17" Macbook Pro), the DVD burner worked fine. I was able to burn at max speed - 8x, have a DVD done in under 10 minutes. At that point I was using Memorex blanks.
When I ran out of them, I didn't want to spend that much money on more, so got some generic staples brand. Even though they were labeled 8x compatible, they would only burn at 2x max. This was quite annoying, as it took about /2 hour now, but I ascribed it to the fact that they were cheap quality, and it was the price to pay for my frugality. However, I just bought a new stack of DVDs, this time Imation, supposed to be good upto 16x, but I am experiencing the same problem, being able to burn at no more then 2x still, so I now feel it may be something with the drive. Does anyone know what might be causing this problem? I have tried using both toast and disk utility, and both do the same thing...

    Welcome to the discussions,
I am sure that most users are not aware of the big difference in the Media.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
In a nutshell there are several things that can, and do affect the quality and speed of your project.
    The Media you purchase.
    The Burning Software you use.
The burner you have in your machine.
Any one or combination of the above can effect the project.
There are so many Formats, and differences in the formats that the casual user is not aware of the differences.
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
The sad thing is that there are no step by step instruction and information to explain the in's and out's of copying DVD's in
    Audio.
    Data.
    Video.
You will find that upwards of 95% of all burning issues are caused by using cheap or poor quality media or using the improper format of disc's.
There are so many restrictions placed on the Firmware of the Optical Drives used there in, is the problem.
That is the reason I recommend using DVD-R media and I also recommend the use of the newer 16X media that will support burning at 1X through 16X.
I also recommend letting the software do the work in Automatic rather then fiddleing with the burning speed.
So as you can see, the use of a high quality media and the correct format will make a very big difference. The guide I supplied above will give you the right direction. I personally use Maxell 16X DVD-R the reason I use this media, it is the highest quality, and the speed will allow you to use this media in older Optical Drives as well as the newest. This media or one like it will support just about all burners.
    Hopefully this should help

  • Problem specifying burn speed with drutil

    Hello,
In another thread, I was looking for help getting hdiutil to write to an external drive. This didn't pan out so as suggested, I'm looking at drutil which supports multiple methods for specifying which drive to use. The only remaining problem is that I can't figure out how to specify the burn speed. I have a feeling I'm overlooking something obvious.
    Any help would be great.
    Cole

I tried drutil based on the syntax you used to rule out any errors I may have made earlier. If I include -speed, it just prints usage. If I remove -speed it works, but sounds like jet engine starting up:
    <pre style="padding-left: .75ex; padding-top: .25em; padding-bottom: .25em; margin-top: .5em; margin-bottom: .5em; margin-left: 1ex; max-width: 80ex; overflow: auto;font-size:small; font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; color: #222; background: #ddd; font-size: 9px; line-height: normal";>sw_vers
    ProductName: Mac OS X
    ProductVersion: 10.4.6
    BuildVersion: 8I127
drutil -drive external burn -eject -speed 4 ~/build/images/llsdemo/llsdemo.iso
Usage: drutil -drive [drive-arguments] command [command-options-and-arguments]

drutil -drive external burn -eject ~/build/images/llsdemo/llsdemo.iso

  • Can't burn disc via iTunes. Burn speed too fast. AGAIN!

"iTunes can't burn this CD because the burn speed is too fast for your CD burner or media. Choose a lower speed in the burning pane of iTunes Preferences then try burning again".
I have been having on going problems burning CD’s in iTunes for YEARS, and I know I am not the only one. I get the error message above. Having checked the forum at the time, and posted for help, I am know there is no real solution except to change brand of disc.
Thing is, now I can’t get ANY brands to work. I’ve been through Verbatim, Maxell, JVC, Sony, but none work. The only brand that would work were TDK audios which I can no longer find anywhere.
I know its not the burner, as Toast works fine, and I know I am not alone. Anyone got any ideas?
Even after years Apple seem to be blanking this question. It’s very frustrating not being able to burn my purchased itunes downloads to disc.

To anyone who is interested I think I may have found a possible solution. When you put a blank disc in the drive, wait about 30-60 seconds or so for it to stop spinning before burning.
This seems to work. It's a bit sticky but eventually works. I tried both TDK & Maxwell discs and 9 out of 11 worked. Absolutely no reason why the other 2 didn't, but it's a lot better than none.

  • How do you reduce the burn speed on a pc???

I've been getting the dreaded 4310 error and discovered, through searching the discussions, that reducing the burn speed could solve the problem. However, I can't find anything on how to do that on a pc? I have a compaq nc6000 laptop.
I've had the problem only rarely before today but, for some reason, it is now happening on every cd I try to burn.
    Thanx!

From the Edit menu select Preferences. Click the Advanced tab, then the Burning tab. You can set the burn speed there.

  • Burn Speed for DVD mastering - fast or slow

Please help! I am getting conflicting advice regarding the best speed to burn a DVD Video (in DVDSP, iDVD, Disk Utility etc) that will be used as a duplication master. I have read online that you should avoid slowing down the burn too much (I think because the disc dyes etc are 'optimised' for faster speeds) and that you will run into problems if you burn an 8x disc at 1 or 2x. However, a technician assures me that you should slow the burn right down and that professional duplicators and production houses never burn a DVD at its rated speed! Who is correct? Any help or links appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have read online that you should avoid slowing down the burn too much (I think because the disc dyes etc are 'optimised' for faster speeds) and that you will run into problems if you burn an 8x disc at 1 or 2x.
The general advice around here is burning at slow speeds to avoid playback problems. DVDSP will allways burn at max speed and that's one of the reasons for NOT using that burning workflow. I allways create a disc image of my project and burn it with Toast and/or Disk Utility, where you can select the burn speed.
After all, you can ask to your duplicator what they prefer.
    Hope that helps !

  • Burn speed

    Hi there,
I have a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D superdrive on my iMac flat panel. Can someone tell me the recommended DVD I should use and what burning speed I should use?
I have iDVD 3 and I'm trying to burn an iMovie project with iDVD and it's not going very well!

    CAV 8X at DVD-ROM (dual)

On the Pioneer 106 personally I have found better luck with media with media rated at 1- 8x and 4x Max. This is getting more difficult to find though. I'm currently working through a spindle of Sony DVD-R 1-8x. If I have a problem with any media I've usually had success by switching down to 1x burning (in Toast etc) and this has had a 100% success rate. Trying to burn some faster media at 4x (the 106's max) has not always worked well.

  • DVD Burn Speed

Sorry if this is a stupid question. But I want to how do I find out what the burn speed/rate a dvd is burning? As I've read that lots of people are only getting 2x.
    Thanks

I've had the same problems with burning speed and
found that you won't get more than 2 x with an 8 x
    DVD-R. I was using 8 x TDK and they wouldn't burn at
more than 2 x. I then switched to 16 x discs and they
burn at 8 x with no problems at all. This applies to
    both TDK and Verbatim disks.

  • "burn speed to fast"

When I try to burn a playlist from iTunes 4.9 I get the error message "burn speed to fast for your CD burner or media". I've tried setting the speed to X2 and even X1 and it still won't work. I've tried it as an audio cd, mp3, and data cd. There were quite a few threads about this in the last few months, but none seemed to end in a solution. I have a superdrive in a year old eMac. I have also noticed intermittent problems with it not reading purchased CD's. Could it be something as simple as getting the lens cleaned?
    Please Help!

Having the same problem myself. Just started today. I burned a few CDs on Sunday, no problem. Now every time I try to burn with media that has worked before I have two things happen:
    1) Not matter what media or burn speed I've selected, I get the "burn speed is to fast for your media or burner, lower it in preferences" message.
    2) After adjusting the burn speed in preferences, I then try burning again. iTunes will check the media for a couple minutes and then just spit the CD out without any error message.
I've rebuilt permissions and restarted, since those are my only steps to trouble-shoot OS X. It's still doing it.
I'm seeing SEVERAL threads with this same problem from a variety of users in both iTunes 4.8 and 4.9. The only update I've applied between the last time I was able to burn and now was the most recent security update (did that yesterday).
Anyone out there finding any leads?
I'm about to try Toast, but that'll be a pain because it's a specific playlist I wanted to burn that I compiled in iTunes.
    Thanks in advance...

  • A WAY TO CHANGE THE BURN SPEED????

    Hi,
I posted a similar question before, but didnt get a definative answer... I'll ask it in a more concise way. Is there a way to change the burn speed in DVD SP2? I didn't see any settings relating to that.
    Thanks,
    Lisa

There is a work around. In DVD Pro, "format" with the output device set to disc and the format to ".img". When this is finished, open Disk Utility and "convert" the .img file to a CD/DVD master (.cdr). This file can then be used to burn to a blank DVD. If you click the options arrow in the burn dialog before beginning the burn, you can select a speed other than "maximum". Not elegant, but it works. My HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4165B DVD drive only succeeds at burning at its maximum rate about 1/3 of the time. However, at 12X it has been quite reliable.

  • 2x burn speed - What brands of media are acceptable?

So i've used 4 different iMacs. All will not burn above 2x with my current media.
    Memorex DVD-R 16x
I have a full spindle of DVD's here, and i can't use them. Also, there seems to be a 40% chance that the DVD write process will fail. 2x burn process, then when it almost gets done 30 minutes later, it fails. This drive is pathetic.
My PC has an 80$ Sony DVD burner, and can burn these disc very nicely at 16x, with rarely ruining a disc. If it can do it, why not the superdrives?
Apparently, i have to have a specific type of dvd for this iMac to be happy. What happened to versatility?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Until recently the Superdrives only had 2x burning speed. Some would actually burn themselves out unless you gave them a firmware update when trying to burn higher than 2x media. Check the speed limit of your burner by first identifying your Mac model as my FAQ explains how:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#IDENTIFY
and then looking it up in specs:
    http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.html
If it is a 2x only burner check for firmware updates for the superdrive under http://www.apple.com/support/
If none are available for that Mac, I suggest getting only 2x media from Verbatim or Ritek, which is sold at http://www.meritline.com/ and http://accaproducts.com/ or other sources listed on http://www.videohelp.com/dvd/
as high quality. Also make sure your media is stored in jewelcases, and not on a spindel, and don't label or write on the media. Check the media type supported in your System Profiler by going to Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info and look under hardware section's Disc burning.
If your Mac appears to support higher speed media based on the system profiler, and it won't work on Verbatim or Ritek media that matches the format type listed there, call AppleCare. Note the media types for DVD are distinctly different, and it is very important to distinguish between:
    DVD-R
    DVD-RW
    DVD-R DL
    DVD+R
    DVD+RW
    DVD+R DL
    DVD-R double sided
    As they are all different.
