Burning Time for DVD on iMac G5

How long does it take to burn a one-hour standard DVD on a new iMac G5? That is, to build and burn. Would I be slowing WAY DOWN from a G4 Dual 1.4?

Dear Rod, by "build" I mean encode, before the burn. DVD Studio Pro uses this term. So for encoding and burning, what does a 1-hour DVD take on the iMac G5
Thanks, flyingcircus. I know you meant 'encode". Its just that one can be encoding from all sorts of "raw material", using all sorts of software to do so. People in this forum are usually posting questions about creating DVD's from sources like commercial dvd's, elgato TV's and the like, or using products like iMovie and iDVD to produce such things, rather than DVD Studio Pro. Hence the query about sources and software. I suspect the DVD Studio Pro forum is more likely to provide you with a useful answer to this one.
You might find it worth casting your eye over the performance comparison on CPU and graphics tasks of the latest iMacs with the earlier models, and with PM G5's, at http://www.barefeats.com/im21.html.
THis should give you a reasonable idea of the comparative performance of the latest model. Several of the other barefeats comparisons, at http://www.barefeats.com/, are also likely to be relevant.
Cheers
Rod

I bought some +r dvds. burned one on my new imac w/the -r burner. seems to work cause i played the dvd in another mac. is this kosher? will this work elsewhere in other dvd players.?
what is the basic difference between -r and +r dvds???

    While your DVD+R

play in DVD players, DVD-R is considered more compatible. You should only use DVD-R and try to use Verbatim (Office Depot?).

  • Time for a new iMac...Advice?

Presently using an iMac...OS X (Panther 10.3.9), 1 GHz PowerPC G4, 2 GB RAM, 80 GB space (about 75 usable).
    And, GarageBand 2.
Often have to go thru a lot of extra steps to create a song. (i.e. taking part of a song to iTunes, bringing it back, to complete a tune. Reason: Maximum number of tracks I can use. Usually about a half dozen, especially if half are MIDI. My recording work seems to put a lot of strain on the processor and I never have another application open when using GB2 (would like to, for example Band-in-a-Box).
So that I never have to worry about computer power again, here's what I'm intending to buy: a 21.5-inch iMac, 3.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; 8 GB RAM; and 2 TB Serial ATA Drive. It would seem this would give me all the power, speed and space I would ever need.
But first, a few questions for all of you:
    1) Has that problem with CD/DVDs on the new iMacs been resolved? (Read about that right here in Discussion Forums; seems to have been a problem with the optical drive...not recognizing, or rejecting CDs/DVDs);
    2) Apparently, the new GB I'll be getting (GB '09) won't accept my work done in GB 2. Not a deal breaker. If true, I'll finish up my work in GB2 and then do my recording on my new computer with GB '09. But, could I install GB 2 and use it on my new machine, while simultaneously having '09 on it? Also, would my audio fonts I added to GB2 (i.e. Boldt fonts) be transportable to GB '09? I presume my Jam Packs that I bought could simply be installed in GB '09. Right?
    3) Could you suggest a few features/capabilities GB '09 has over GB2. I mean for my home recordings; not really interested in other things like how to play a guitar, etc. Are there more sound fonts, loops? How about things like changing key in mid-song, or tempo? Printing music that's been recorded (i.e. for one track)?
    4) I'm also going to get Logic Express 9 w my new computer. I think I'm ready for it, but: Could you guys offer me a few features or capabilities Logic has over GB? Like, what would that comparatively sophisticated program do for my recording work that GB won't? My wife asked me that and I really couldn't answer.
I appreciate your advice and comments. My present iMac is seven years old, still working fine and I think I've gotten my money's worth out of it. But for my home recordings, it's time to pork up. It would seem this new iMac will be more than loaded for me.

this is not true, newer version of GB can open older data files, just not the other way around. i worked with GB2 files this past friday.

many! mostly from GB4, so read that first:

and it will still work fine for other things, if anyone else you know could use it for web, email, and the like, but you should find much joy in the new machine!

  • Burn Speed for DVD mastering - fast or slow

Please help! I am getting conflicting advice regarding the best speed to burn a DVD Video (in DVDSP, iDVD, Disk Utility etc) that will be used as a duplication master. I have read online that you should avoid slowing down the burn too much (I think because the disc dyes etc are 'optimised' for faster speeds) and that you will run into problems if you burn an 8x disc at 1 or 2x. However, a technician assures me that you should slow the burn right down and that professional duplicators and production houses never burn a DVD at its rated speed! Who is correct? Any help or links appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Ian

The general advice around here is burning at slow speeds to avoid playback problems. DVDSP will allways burn at max speed and that's one of the reasons for NOT using that burning workflow. I allways create a disc image of my project and burn it with Toast and/or Disk Utility, where you can select the burn speed.
After all, you can ask to your duplicator what they prefer.
    Hope that helps !

  • Burn Time I DVD 5

I dumped some digital footage from I Movie into I DVD, nothing fancy, approx 29 chapters no more than 1 minute each, no slides and a regular theme. The stats said 2.6 gb of 4 gb. I noticed it took almost 2 1/2 hours to go through the burning process. Is this normal?
    I'm running I Life 5 on a Powerbook 15"
1.5 processor with 500mb of memory.
I ran through the tips real quick and didn't see anything on enhancing performance but again is the time to burn normal?
Also forgot to add, I'm getting the footage from an external firewire drive
    rdee

is the time to burn normal?
Doesn't sound too odd. My Dual G5 2 GHz would take 45 minutes to encode 30 minutes, and then about 10-15 minutes to burn...so I'm close to an hour. You've got one less processor at 25% slower speed, so 2 1/2 hours seems to be in the ballpark. As always, your mileage may vary.....

  • Burn Speeds for DVD 1x

I am using toast 7 to Burn an image file of a master copy DVD. However, I am only able to burn at 4x speed, and am getting hiccups in playback. How can I burn at 1x speed? Is this a hardware or software issue (if I upgrade to toast 10 will this fix?) Of course I have a job due and need a fast answer. Any help is great!
    Thanks,
    Josh

Toast should allow you to force a burn at 1x - check the burn speed option in the program. I don't remember, however, which versions this is available in. As I recall, the speeds the media can officially support are shown in bold, and the unsupported speeds are shown in italics. 4X is generally the minimum official speed of current media.
Do the hiccups appear at regular intervals, or do they only appear in certain areas of the movie?
If the hiccups are at regular intervals, this would sound to me like a disc problem. What brand of media are you using? There's a lot of junk media out there that could cause what you're seeing.
If the hiccups only appear at certain places in the movie, it sounds like the bitrate of the movie to too high for your player to handle. A lot of older players (and some newer ones) don't do very well when playing from recordable media, especially if the bitrate is over 6-6.5 Mbps. Speaking of that, what format is your audio in?
What software was used to author the disc?

  • What Max burn speed for DVD or DVD-DL?

    Hello,
How can I find out what recording speed DVD, DVD-DL or even plain CD's should I buy for my Macbook? .. Mid 2007 model, 2G's ram, Super-Drive.
I just don't want to go get 8x speed if the system is not going to be able to take advantage of it.

  • Superimposing Time for DVD playback

I want to make a DVD with the project's time indicator superimposed on the video playback, so that the director can make notes, referencing the cuts he wants to critique by minuetes:seconds:frames into the playback. Is there any easy way to do this?

    James,
If you wish more control over the TimeCode display, you can use the TimeCode Effect in AfterEffects (if you have it) to change colors, fonts and more.

  • I bought a used PowerMacPC G5. I can burn and read DVDs, but I can't read or burn CDs. The CDs are not even recognized. After the drive searches for a while, the CD is ejected without any error messages. The CDs work okay on my iMac.

I am running Mac OSX 10.4.11. According to the System profiler the CD/DVD drive is a "PioneerDVD-RWDVR-112D." When I compare the information under this heading, the only unusual difference from my iMac is that the G5 reads "Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)." My iMac reads "Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)."
Under the System Preferences the options are set to "Ask what to do" when a blank CD or DVD is inserted. Music CD set to open iTunes, Picture CD set to open iPhoto, Video DVD set to open DVD player.
    Do you have any suggestions?
    Thanks, Jack

  • Every time I open Itunes or plug in my Ipod or Ipad I get an error message that the registery settings for burning cds and dvds are missing and to reinstall Itunes.  i've done this several times but the message won't go away.

Every time I plug my Ipod Nano or Ipad 2 into my computer I get the same error message.  It says that registery settings are missing for importing burning cds and dvds due ot other burning software and to untinstall itunes and reinstall Itunes.  I've done this several times and I'm not having any trouble importing cds at all and I can't make the message go away.  It always comes up before Itunes will open.

I'd start with the following document, with one modification. At step 12 after typing GEARAspiWDM press the Enter/Return key once prior to clicking OK. (Pressing Return adds a carriage return in the field and is important.)

You would need to have burned the disc using iDVD or a third-party application such as Toast. Is that what you did?

  • My imac 27 ``- superdrive accepts and burns CDs and DVDs but no program DVDs. Does anybody has the same problem - or an idea for a solution of that problem?

Hello imac-users, my problem is: the superdrive accepts normal CDs, DVDs and is also burning them - for example music from itunes. But today I inserted 2 program DVDs - photoshop elements / Adobe and ms office 2011 for mac - and the superdrive does not accept them. After some seconds of running and noise, the DVDs are ejected - also no icon for the DVD on the desctop. So I think, it has something to do with OS X and not with the superdrive. Does anybody having the same problem - and an idea for a solution?

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee
    Cheers, Gerd

  • Is there an external cd/dvd burner-player for iMac

is there an external cd/dvd burner-player for my imac?

You can simply google for that; I'm sure there'll be plenty - just make sure it specifically states that it is compatible with Mac and the OS version you are running. I've had a LaCie for a number of years; it is self powered with FW port (they no longer make this one unfortunately); here is their non-Bluray option they have now:
    http://www.lacie.com/products/range.htm?id=10058
(Personally, I prefer self powered instead of bus powered). They also sell Bluray burners.
