Burning to a La Cie external burner

I have an iMac G5 (10.4.2), combo drive. I also have a Lacie d2 External 16x Dual-Layer DVD+/-RW Drive with FireWire/USB2.0 (Model 300920) as my external burner.
I've created a 20min. movie in iMovie and imported it into iDVD, and am hoping for some guidance on how to get this puppy burnt onto a playable (read: video) DVD disc.
As I understand it, I have two options:
1.) in iMovie, export the finished movie to QuickTime, and then use the bundled Toast Lite program (which came with the La Cie) to burn to DVD, sans menus. Has anyone tried this, and can verify that this is a workable option?
2.) in iDVD, create a disk image of the project. Here's where I get hazy; La Cie couldn't tell me how to get the disk image onto DVD using its burner; I know that Toast Lite does not support the disk image format; Apple Support refused to consult with me on the issue; Can anyone shed some light as video onto a DVD as video using the La Cie?
One other question: tomorrow I'll be near a Mac with a super drive. If I burned the disk image (or iMovie project) to DVD as data (versus video), and loaded it up on the super-drive equipped mac, would this work? Or would it be looking for local files that weren't there?
Thanks very much, in advance.

I had no luck burning a disk image (.img) file until I converted it to a "dvd master" (.cdr) via Disk Utility. At that point everything worked perfectly. I've also successfully burned from a .dmg file but I went back to .cdr on the supposition that since the .dmg format is described as 'compressed' there would be some loss of quality.
I've tried to find a technical discussion about these three file formats, but so far nothing. i'm surprised that Apple hasn't documented the no-burn .img in the Disk Utility help file.

  • La cie external hard drive problem

just bought a new G5 mac pro after my old G5 gave up on me.
installed all the software and attached the external hard drive ( la Cie,I reformatted it for Time Machine ), scanner and printer.
In the first week had a few freezes and twice, after a long start-up, found corrupt files. The files that were corrupt were files that I worked on that day, not older files, of course also the files on my back-up Hd were corrupt.
After reading some threads I found that maybe the scanner or external drive could be the problem.
So detached those and so far no problem. My guess is that it has to do with the La Cie external hard drive. I don't have a serial# for that drive, but it is a design by F.A.porsche. I read that the drive has to be a FAT32 formatting??
Is there something I should do with that drive so it would work in a normal order?

Just to clear things up, the G5 was PowerPC and had "PowerMac" name. The Mac Pro is Intel only and only an outside resemblance.
You never want to migrate applications from G5 PPC to Intel, causes problems. Install fresh and avoid the pitfalls.
LaCie is really the most common culprit. Their power adapters, but also their poor cables - both USB and FireWire.
You don't mention, but just in case, don't daily chain; or mix hard drives and other types - get a separate PCI controller even.
TimeMachine must be GPT and HFS+ and there is no such thing as a case that must have Master Boot Record and FAT formatting.
Invest in Disk Warrior to handle disk maintenance - preventative.

  • Scratch disk - La Cie external hardrive - missing Gb space

I was capturing footage from dv to my external hardrive in final cut express. I had about 120Gb (over 600mins). Computer crashed. When tried to capture again, computer says only have 2Gb remaining (17mins of download time). I went to system preferences - scratch disks, where the internal HD and the la Cie external HD are marked as having only 2Gb left. I know this is not true.
How can I reset the computer to get back my unused 120Gb on the external HD which does not now appear on the scratch disk?

    Hi Gary.
I can't say what has happened to the space but if you download WhatSize and run it for a couple of minutes or so, it will list every file on your HD starting with the largest.
That might give you some idea of what is taking up the space:-
    http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize/index.php
Also try Trashing the Preferences and reset the Scratch Disks.

  • La Cie external DVD burner not working with OSX 10.5.2

Every time I try to burn a DVD with my external drive I get an error message sayng that the connection is not stable. I have double checked all my connections and everything is fine yet I cannot burn DVDs or CDs. Any ideas????

I have had the burner for about 2 years and was working fine. Worked even after I upgraded to OSX 10.5. Tried to use it the other day, and this problem occurred. Not sure if it happened after the update to 10.5.2.

  • Blue screen of death when La Cie external firewire drive connected

I tested a LaCie external firewire drive on my iMac and it worked fine. I packed it up well and posted it to a friend who gets the blue screen of death when the LaCie is connected to her iMac. She's not even trying to boot from it.
My iMac is 9.1  and hers is 8.1.  We are both running Snow Leopard.  Was there some problem once upon a time with chipsets or am I mis-remembering?
    TIA

Create an ISO (Encore) or folder on your hard drive (Encore or Premiere Elements) and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write files or folders or ISO to disc for DVD or BluRay (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)
Imgburn will read the ACTUAL disc brand from the disc, which is not always the same as the box label (Memorex is notorious for buying "anything" and putting it inside a Memorex box)
When you write to disc with Imgburn, use the SLOWEST possible speed setting, so your burner has the best chance to create "good, well formed" laser burn holes... since no player is required to read a burned disc, having a "good" one from a high quality blank will help

  • La Cie External Hard Drive has trouble mounting!

I have a similar problem to some of those that have posted, but any help is appreciated. I have a 160GB La Cie Porsche external hard drive that will not mount on my desktop of either a G4 running 10.3 or an ibook running 10.4.4. In both instances, I try and run Disk Utility in which the device appears, however I am unable to verify or repair it due to an "Input/Output error." I tried Disk Warrior but the drive does not appear.
I have gotten some advice that the device is probably formatted as MS_DOS/Fat32 device and that I should reformat as Mac OS-extended. Fine. But I at least need the information that is on that drive before I do anything. Any advice or any programs that will allow me to do so? Thanks

    Jason -
    Try a few things:
attach the drive to your cpu with a different cable.
attach the drive to your cpu thru a different firewire port on both the cpu and the drive.
Have you been using this drive long? If it's new, outta the box chances are this is merely a formatting issue. I recall the LaCie website and the literature that comes with their drives covers this stuff.
I hate to add this but the Porshe design drives are famous for their failure rates - Sometimes right outta the box they are DOA.

  • Odd La Cie External Hard Drive Sound

    Hi everyone.
I got a load of Apple stuff ranging from 1985-1996 yesterday and included was an external LaCie hard drive.
I plugged her in and noticed a really, really odd sound. I've never heard of HDD make a sound like this before, and couldn't find a similar sound on all of the "hard drive failure sounds" websites.
The hard drive itself is an IBM DORS-32160 from 1996. Below is a link to a youtube video with the hard drive producing the odd sound. I believe it repeats 3 times before I stop recording.
    youtube.com/watch?v=Plbo5SJl5Go
You will need to turn your speakers up.
I assume its means the HDD is toast, but does anyone have any idea what this means? Like, what the problem is or if you have heard it before?
    Thanks a bunch.

DiskWarrior will only repair HFS and HFS+ file systems. You need a utility that repairs the FAT file system. You might try hooking the drive up to a Windows box then try to repair it with a Windows disk utility.

  • La Cie external drive - mini discs

Just purchased a lacie external drive from Apple store for the sole purpose of downloading digital video from mini discs to my Imac. Salesperson said mini discs would work in the drive. However, when I insert a mini disc, either a dvd-rw or dvd-r, the computer tells me it is blank. Also won't let me eject.
Anyone know if this drive can read from mini discs or know of any mac compatble drive that will? If it matters, the video was shot with a sony handy cam. Thanks.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions
I would take a trip back to the Apple Store, LaCie and a disk or two in hand and politely ask the sales person if they would hook it up and test it.

  • Trying to make a clone backup of my internal HD but my iMac no longer recognizes my external HD.

Short story: I am trying to make a clone of my internal drive using Super Duper! but the 3 TB La Cie external hard drive I want to copy to isn't being recognized by finder or in disk utility. The external hard drive is powered and attached to the desktop via firewire cable. It was properly formatted and made one seemingly successful backup prior to this attempt.
Specs: I have a 27 in iMac with 2 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, purchased in late 2009. Running Mac OS 10.6.8 with 8GB RAM.  I have a 2 TB internal HD with only 80 GB available.
Background: I've had few if any problems with this computer but I'm running out of disc space. It's getting a little sluggish and I find that I am force quitting iPhoto more often than I used to. I was getting ready to put a long overdue (less labor intensive) backup plan in place. I had been using DVDs to back up photos and some documents. My computer crashed last week while working in iPhoto. The screen was speckled and banded and I could not restart.  I was able to boot in safe mode and run disk utility. The verification stopped (corrupted files found) and disk utility recommended repair.  I did a safe mode back up with time machine to the 3 TB ext HD. I tried unsuccessfully to run safe mode with networking to attempt online backup with Crashplan. I read something about installing mac os x on ext HD and then dragging files over to it, but DVD player not functional in safe mode. Then I called Apple support to run what I had done by them and to ask for advice before running disk repair.  We tried a PRAM reset but still couldn't restart in normal mode. He said my safe mode backup should be good and to run the repair, restore if necessary and if that doesn't work bring it to Apple for hardware testing.  I read somewhere that PRAM resets need to be done with a USB (not wireless) keyboard so I tried again doing a few PRAM/NVRAM resets.  No change. Later, maybe even the next day, the screen which had been banded and speckled looked normal again. Not sure why but happy.  I restarted successfully. I ran a time machine backup in normal mode to a 5 TB external HD and wanted to make a bootable clone of my mac HD to the 3 TB ext HD (in place of the safe mode backup). The computer crashed again for a little while and I was eventually able to restart. I downloaded Super Duper! but my mac no longer sees the 3 TB external drive. Maybe I did something wrong when I changed drives in time machine for the last backup?  I'm guessing I could crash again at any moment and would love to get this clone made.

Yes. Formatted correctly. It' s new ext HD and I made a the first back up on it a few days ago using time machine while my computer was in safe mode. When I was able to restart my computer normally I quickly set up a time machine backup to my larger 5 TB ext drive. Also new and formatted for my mac. I was in a rush to get it going before I left for work so maybe I did something wrong. IDK. I can't remember but it did ask me about switching drives vs setting up. Although I don't see why the computer wouldn't see the drive.
I did try another firewire cable and no change. Checked connections again.  The HD turns on and the blue light comes on  (it's a La Cie d2 quadra deskdrive)
Is the SMC reset where you detach devices and restart?  My printer, keyboard and mouse are all wireless and right now I don't have anything else connected.
I'll try another PRAM reset too.
    *  Question:
When I connect the 3 TB drive it starts up but I don't see it on my desktop, finder sidebar or in disk utility. If a hard drive starts up but doesn't show up on your computer how do you safely shut it down before disconnecting?  I've been clicking on the desktop and then pressing the eject button on my keyboard just in case.

  • My LaCie external hard drive connected to Time Machine for data backup drops it's connection and a error message displays tell me that I did not properly disconnect the device.  This started after upgrading to OSX10.6.7.

My La Cie external hard drive drops it's connection after mounting on my iMac computer.  This problem seems to have started after upgrading to OSX10.6.7.  When I turn on my computer and than turn on the external hard drive the hard drive mounts to my disk top without any problem, but when I bring up Mail or Safari the hard drive drops its connection.  Is there a fix for this problem?  Hope someone can help.

The connection to 10.6.7 may just be a coincidence.  I had a similar problem with a disk and was about to throw it out but decided to try a different USB cable.  That fixed the problem and the drive is still in use.
Try a new cable if you have not already done so.

  • Question about Time Machine backup on external drive containing photos

I have a Le Cie external hard drive with iPhoto '08 photos on it.  I bought the drive when I started running out of room on my early 2008 iMac and moved a bunch of iphoto pictures and imovie movies onto it.  Can I use this same external drive to run Time Machine backups?  Or would that risk losing the photos that are already on the external drive??  Can an external drive be used for both photo storage and Time Machine backups?
Ultimately, my goal is to update to iPhoto '11, but I would like to have all my photos backed up first in case it doesn't go well.
    Thanks!

Yes. You can back up your internal the external drives to the TM drive.

  • External Hard drive connection issue

    I'm using Mac G5, FCP 5.0.
I bought a La Cie external hard drive, and transfered all the files which relate to this feature length project. It opens and works well, but every time when I open the project on FCP, it starts searching maybe 30 files, and I have to wait about 7 minutes.(It's not the one which is in a big gray window and ask you if you want to reconnect. It is a small white box, and it says "it is searching"file name"", and it actually finds the files automatically) Is it normal? Or did I do somthing wrong when I transfered the files?
If there is someone who knows how to solve this problem, please teach me how.
Thank you very very much in advance.
    Kiki

Select the drive on the desktop and type cmd+i. This opens a window that reports the formatting of the drive. If it's msdos you need to reformat it Mac OS Extended with Apple's Drive Utility found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder. You'll lose all of the files, but it will actually work right.

  • Problem backing up multiple internal hard drives to external

    SITUATION:
We have 4 internal hard drives dedicated to media + another running the programs. The FCP projects are all saved on one of the media hard drives which also has captured media on it. The other 3 media drives hold the rest of the media for these projects. I have copied them all, one hard drive at a time, onto a La Cie external hard drive.
    PROBLEM:
When I go into the La Cie drive, double click on HardDrive1 and open a project, the only "on line" clips in the browser are from the HardDrive1. It can't seem to link up to the media on the other three hard drives even though all the media is there.
    QUESTION:
Anyone know how to set up the La Cie disk so that the projects on HD1 can find all their media from the 3 other media hard drives?

OK, had coffee, thinking straight(er)...almost not confused.
Your recent post would indicate that you have 7 harddrives inside your Mac.?.?. I think I understand what you have going on, and may be able to help, but it'll take a bit more info...
Are each of the 'desktop icon' harddrives individual harddrives, or partitioned HDs. If any are partitioned, can you tell me which?
I understand PROMAX has a good name, so I'm inclined to believe that whatever they did, was done properly and with good reason.
Anyway, I copied all of these hard drives onto the LaCie starting with the FCP HD and set that one up as a "bootable" hard drive. The rest followed, one HD at a time (took forever!).
"I copied all of these hard drives"... How did you copy...CCCloner? MediaManager, Drag and drop. This may be part of the issue...a little beyond my scope, but let us know how you copied the drive contents from internal to Lacie.
Can you open any of the 'non-findable' clips on the Lacie in QuickTime..just to make sure they're on the drive and usable?
When you open FCP on the lacie (and it only connects to files from same 'drive')...do you get the normal 'reconnect media' prompt, or are you getting a window that says 'The movie file "------" cannot be found. Without this file, the movie cannot play properly.
If the standard 'reconnect media' prompt..., have you tried selecting 'reconnect' then when that window comes up select, 'search' and uncheck 'Matched Name Only'...keep 'Reconnect all files in relative path' checked as this will link all files from that drive at the same time.
    Try this and post back.
