Burning Ubuntu ISO appears to fail in Mavericks
Folks,
I have used Disk Utility in the past to burn an ISO to a DVD. I haven't done it in awhile. I find now that after downloading the Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 LTS ISO for i386 (Intel) that the burn succeeds but, "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." I thought Disk Utility was simply copying the ISO to the disc rather than expanding and burning the file hierarchy until I checked the disc in my Toshiba PC.
If I insert one of my Mac created 'coasters' into the PC. It shows up with full folder hierarchy. So, from the PC perspective it is a good bootable disc. I am actually installing Ubuntu over there now from that disc.
I knew I could burn a DVD with Toshiba Disc Creator, ISO to Disc or something similar, and see the file hierarchy on the resulting disc. The Mac instructions on the Ubuntu How-To page are simplicity itself: open Disk Utility; drag ISO to the left panel; select; Burn. An old MacHints article from 2005 gives the same instructions. Again, while the burn succeeds, it doesn't mount.
In Disk Utility with the ISO in the left panel, if I double-click it I see, "Unable to attach 'ubuntu-12.04.4-desktop-i386.iso' (no mountable file systems.)" It is similar if I double-click it in the Finder.
If I had only one computer, I would assume failure. If I pop in the disc to create a Linux virtual machine in VirtualBox on my Lion Mac, the Finder reports it is unable to read the disc. I have the option to "Ignore" and I start the new Linux VM and see it read the disc for installation. It is just odd. (I have no idea if it would work with Boot Camp.)
Why on earth doesn't it mount on OS X?
Cheers,
Paul
ISO are images of a disk, to burn an iso you would need some specialized buring software to do this like NERO, or in this case TOAST, and from the file menu click burn image to disc, and BURN!!!
I'm sure you can download some opensoure software and install it on the mac.
Thats about it really

Unable to boot on Mac Mini from DVD burned from .iso image
I'm following the Beginner's Guide to try and install Arch on a Mac Mini "Late 2009".
I have downloaded archlinux-2014.10.01-dual.iso and associated .sig, and have verified it using the gpg2 command described in the guide (including the link to http://sparewotw.wordpress.com/2012/10/ … -sig-file/ which gave some assurance that the ambiguous answer produced by gpg2 was in fact legitimate).
I then used OSX's Disk Utility to burn the .iso file to a blank DVD. After verifying the burn, it ejected the disk.
When I re-inserted it, I received a message that the disk was unmountable, giving me the option to Ignore or Eject. I chose Ignore. Then I went to the System Preferences > Startup Disk, to see if it would at least appear there as an option, but it didn't.
(I should mention that I also burned the same file to another disk using a Windows machine, and when I inserted it into the Mac I got the same message, so I don't think it's corrupted media. (Bad reader, perhaps? eek.) )
That's where I stand. There are so many variables at play here (many of them Apple-induced, I think) that I've been unable to find a solution that fits my situation. Could someone please provide suggestions / pointers / answer?
Thanks,

Exactly right. Holding the Option key caused a display of various bootable OSes, including the one I had just burned from the Mac using hdiutil (weirdly entitled "windows"). I selected it, and it booted. I now have a console. Problem solved. Thanks.
UPDATE: note that this boot disk *cannot* be seen or selected via the OSX System Preference > Startup Disk panel. Holding the Option key during startup seems to be the only way to select it.

I recently downloaded a operating system (ubuntu linux) to install on my old windows machine. It downloaded as a ISO and i was wondering how i have to burn it. Do i directly burn the ISO. Do i mount in then burn all of the things in it? and is it the same with a DMG? If not what do i have to do in that case?

I am trying to update iso 7.0 and get the following message; iso 7.0 failed verification because you are no longer connected to the Internet . But I am???
Hey NinaChall,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues updating to iOS 7. It may be best to complete the update utilizing iTunes:
iOS: How to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4623
Update your device using iTunes
1. Ensure that you're using the latest version of iTunes.
2. Connect your device to your computer using the included USB cable.
3. After iTunes opens, select your device when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
4. Click "Check for Update" in the Summary pane to check for available updates.
5. If an update is available, iTunes prompts you to download and install the update. Do not disconnect your device until the update has finished.
Thanks,

I've been working on archiving a ton of video to DVD. I'm using Dual-Layer discs to minimize the amount of physical storage space needed for the finished project. I burned several discs in iDVD in July and regularly received errors. Then the drive suddenly stopped loading any type of media. Anything I inserted would spin briefly and then eject. Repaired permissions and followed steps outlined here and here. Took the Mac back to the store where I bought it (sadly, not an Apple Store - nearest one is 12 hrs away) where naturally it performed flawlessly for the store rep.
So I took it home and resumed burning, now saving as a disc image (ignoring iDVD's warning about the performance of DVDs burned this way) and using Disk Utility, since iDVD didn't seem to be reliable. Burned about 25 discs, error-free, in this fashion, then three days ago, got the error: "Unable to burn “Disc 19.img”. (The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.)"
Retried the same image, and it worked. Then burned two more in the same fashion with no errors. Today I got the same error again. Logs are identical for each failed burn, except for the time span between certain lines.
Price of DL media being what it is, I'd hate to keep ruining discs if there's something I can do to avoid it. I suppose it could be bad media, but it seems odd that I'd get two bum discs that close together after burning so many without issue. Checked the site and the forums, and there doesn't seem to be any answers. Does anyone have any ideas? (Other than "try a different brand of media." I've got a buttload of these discs and it's too late to return them now.) Even if it just helps determine where the issue lies. Warranty will be up soon, so if it's hardware related, I need to get it taken care of quick.

Message was edited by: Weasel42I have encountered the same problem. I have a Mac Book Pro from 2007, and it has gone through 3 DVD writers so far, all of which have ruined DVD+R DL disks. I have occasionally been able to burn one, but usually during verify, I get this error message:
Communication to the disk drive failed: 0x8002022
And disk utility fails with a "Invalid B-tree node size" error
Oddly, when I try to burn a disk near capacity (6.5Gb or more) it is more likely to fail than if I burn a smaller disk.
I've been using Memorex DVD+R DL disks, but I have used other brands in the past but they have failed, too. Out of about 50 disks so far, I have had success with about 5. -

Solaris 10 sshd + GSSAPI auth appears to fail with long usernames.
Solaris 10 sshd using GSSAPI mode appears to fail with long usernames.
We have recently jumbo-patched solaris 10 server and windows 2k3 kerberos kdc. We wish to provide the single sign on thing for our Windows users, as written up in http://220-245-28-18.static.tpgi.com.au/~irvinee/gssapi-sol10/gssapi-howto.html
Everything is fine, until a user with a ten character username comes along. The ten character username does not get the single sign on experience
However, he can kinit fine on Solaris 10 server and also on other unix clients.
If I switch from the stock solaris 10 sshd to a self-compiled OpenSSH linked against MIT Kerberos, the 10 char username gets single-sign-on and all is well..
I note I have no problem when the server is FreeBSD 6.2 and the client is stock solaris 10 ssh.
It seems to be the Solaris 10 sshd only that is affected. Before I write up a bug report, has anyone else come across the same problem?I finally got it working. I think my problem was that I was coping and pasting the /etc/pam.conf from Gary's guide into the pam.conf file.
There was unseen carriage returns mucking things up. So following a combination of the two docs worked. Starting with:
http://web.singnet.com.sg/~garyttt/Configuring%20Solaris%20Native%20LDAP%20Client%20for%20Fedora%20Directory%20Server.htm
Then following the steps at "Authentication Option #1: LDAP PAM configuration " from this doc:
http://docs.lucidinteractive.ca/index.php/Solaris_LDAP_client_with_OpenLDAP_server
for the pam.conf, got things working.

Can I make iPhoto burn standard ISO CDs ?
Dear All,
anyone knows if it is possible to make iPhoto burn standard .ISO CD's instead of "iPhoto Archives" with a complete iPhoto file structure including thumbnails and so?
My problem is that whenever I want printed pictures from the local Shop, I have to burn to CD and they do not get around with the iPhoto Archives (what I can understand...). So each time it necessary to export those pictures to a folder and burn a CD manually with Toast & Co.
Would be handy to have this option directly from iPhoto (although Apple offers a print service within iPhoto ;-)
Thanks in advance!
PowerMac Dual G5/1.8, PowerBook G4/1.3 Mac OS X (10.4.7)Thanks for all your help... but this is not really an answer to my question What you're suggesting is exporting the pictures and burn with another application; whether this is Toast or Build-In OS X Engine makes no difference.
My problem is that my father just started with computers (at the age of 75) as he likes photography and now switched to digital. iPhoto is very nice and easy, but exactly this feature does not correspond to what I would request. That's why I asked...
If there is no way to make iPhoto burn ISO images via simple click, I prefer to visit my old man and burn the CD instead of trying to explain
Thanks anyway...

The burn to the SuperDrive drive failed. The disc drive didn’t respond properly and can’t recover or retry.
I have tried to do a SMC Reset and PRAM reset and it still will not work. Before the update I was burning pics onto the same dics with no problem.
Any suggestions on what to do?

How to Burn an ISO to a DVD or USB?
Series: How to Re-Install Windows when you don't have the Recovery Discs
Intro: What is an ISO? Why is it used?
Step 1 - Get the ISO - ISO Download Links
Step 2 - Burn the ISO to a DVD or USB
Step 3 - What to do with the ISO DVD/USB? Change the Boot Order
Step 4 - What to do After Windows is Installed? How to Get HP Drivers?
Step 2 - Burn the ISO to a DVD or USB
I've Got the ISO, Now What?
DVD Option
Once you've got a Windows ISO, you have to put it on some type of media, like a DVD or USB flash drive. Burning the ISO to a disc is made easy with ImgBurn's 'Write image file to disc' - Option B below.
Vista users: If you used the Vista download link in Step 1 above, you've got 3 different files that must be combined. You'll have to use Option A first to create an Image file from those 3 files and then use Option B to burn that ISO to a DVD (or see the USB Option below)
USB Option
It wouldn't be necessary to put the ISO on a USB if you have a DVD drive and it is working. Newer, slimmer laptops sometimes don't come with DVD drives anymore, so they must use the USB option.
For putting the ISO on a USB flash drive, another program is required to make the USB drive able to be seen and booted to by the BIOS. "To be seen and booted to by the BIOS", means making the USB "bootable".
Rufus is a good program that creates bootable USB drives. Again, there are other programs out there that do this same thing too.
See Step 3 - What to do with the ISO DVD/USB? Change the Boot Order
If you have any questions, create a new post (How to Create a New Post - Video), copy and paste it's link into a private message to me, and I will respond on your threadYou can try to open it in Disk Utility. Just go Images>Open>browse to the .iso and it should mount the volume. Choose the volume and go to Images>Burn and follow directions.
You may encounter problems if the volume created on Windows is not compatibly formatted, but that's unlikely.
Note I'm running 10.3.9 so DU may have changed menu structures/options.
Lastly, this is faster and easier with Toast.
