Burning video to DVDs - what discs?

I just got my powerbook and have a lot of "Lost" episodes to move... both in AVI and iTunes format. What discs do I need, and what's the most efficient way to burn it so it'll read both on my computer and on a TV?

Welcome to the Apple forums.
There's a current discussion about burning iTunes video to a DVD, see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=286906&tstart=0
On AVI's, you can use MPEG Streamclip (http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html) to convert them to digital video, then use DVD Imager (http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/applescript/dvdimager.html) to create the DVD image for burning. Both programs are freeware. Or use a product like Toast.
We use TDK DVD's (have used both -R and +R) to burn DVD's that work on both computer and TV (was recently told to use -R for video, +R for data, however, have also seen recommendations of +R for video). They're available from our local Circuit City for $8 for 25, which seems to be about the going discounted rate. If you browse around the web, you'll find discussion on the quality of blank DVD's, their sources, what country they were manufactured in, etc. The TDK DVD's have consistently worked, and I can recommend them.

Why can't you do this? There's plenty of third-party software that can do the job. Download a few from
MacUpdate or CNET Downloads and try them out before choosing one to purchase.

It sounds like you have assigned the primary click on the trackpad to something else, perhaps a gesture.
Use your mouse, login and then open the Trackpad preference pane and see how you have the interface configured.
Oh and you can have both the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad powered up and working at the same time. No need to keep moving batteries around.

  • Burning Video to DVD or VCD

Is it possible to export/burn downloaded videos to DVD for viewing on a standard DVD player. I would like to watch TV episodes on my TV without having to connect it to the iMac (if that would even work.)

Unfortunately not. The DRM on the videos you buy from the iTunes Store does not allow this. You may burn the videos to Data disc.

Does anyone know what the playback quality of burning iTunes videos to dvds is like?
      Windows XP

Yeah. It’s zero quality because it is not possible.
You can save them as a data file but not as a video to view on a DVD player.

How do you burn .mp4 or .mpeg4 files (ipod video files)to dvds? I know there's a way, but I don't know what it is. If you know of a software, anybody know where I can find a free trial?

Once you have recorded HD video with the ipod 4g, is there a way to burn it to dvd? And can the ipod 4g be connected to a big screen tv? I have an ipod dock with the audio/video cables going into my tv, does the ipod 4g work with it?

If you have a dvd recorder you can hook the computer up to the dvd player play the video on the computer and record using the dvd recorder.
To put it in IDVD use handbrake to rip the dvd you just recorded into mp4, convert it to quicktime (using imovie), and then drag the finished Imovie onto the menu in IDVD.

  • PE11 and burning to a DVD+R disc

    Hi,
    I am so lost.
I have video and slideshows that I would like to burn to DVD's for Christmas presents.
I seem to be unable to burn more than one MPEG video or MPEG slideshow to the DVD.
I have reasearched the forum until I'm blue in the face. I have looked into the APE11 Class room in a Book. All to no avail.
Yes - I am very, very new to PE11. In fact this is my first video program I've ever used. I also am not very techy. - Sorry.
Here is the problem. Once I burn a slideshow or a video, I am unable to burn anything else to the DVD+R.
At this time, I am ready to shove everything into one BIG huge file and burn it.
Do I have any other options?
I am using a new Toshiba laptop with Windows 8. The hard drive is almost empty because it is so much larger than my old PC. Ram could be improved but I don't think that is my problem.
I believe I don't understand the function of DVD's. Can you say frustrated? Yep - I can!
    DVD-R does what?
    DVD+R does what?
    DVD-RW does what?
Am I trying to write multiple vidoe's/slideshows to the wrong medium?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

John T. has provided a great link to about all things "DVD."
The +R & -R are types of DVD media, and can be used (in their blank form) to create DVD-Videos, to be played on computers via DVD software players, or by set-top hardware DVD players, hooked to a TV.
Gong back, set-top hardware DVD players were sensitive to the DVD "types," and some would only play one type well, or possibly ONLY one type. Most modern DVD players are much less sensitive, BUT if some recipients have older players, it can still be important. For those older set-top players the +R type media, seem to be slightly more "universal," but there is no "correct answer," as it depends on the actual player.
Most computer multi-drive players can handle either type (and also RW discs), equally well.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Idvd wont burn video to dvd

    Hi all,
i am become desperate with idvd on mac mini3 with snow leopard 10.6.
    i tried several ways.
    1. trying to burn a video from Linux VideoDiscRecorder, cause iDVD would make the menu more beautyfull.
demuxed transportstream with ProjectX to several files (.mp2, m2v, ac3)
mplexed this with mplex on Linux to mpg2 with two audio-tracks.
after ordering mpeg2 license from apple, quicktime is able to play the video
it is able to get droped to the menu and a new entry appears.
testing the dvd in iDVD it works fine,
when burning to disc, the menu get converted, then it trys to convert the video ??? (from mpeg2 to mpeg2???) then i get an error: unable to transorm video, the only thing i can do is klick ok.
    way 2
    i have a h264 video from a canon camera.
tried to drop that to iDVD, works, test works again.
when trying to burn to dvd menu get converted fine, then iDVD tries to convert video, iDVD crashes.
    way3
i imported the h264 from from canon camera in iMovie (it get optimized about 16min, the video has a length of 10min)
then i publish it to iDVD takes again 20min.
in iDVD i create the menu add some photos
    preview is again ok,
when burning the project to disc the menu get created, when trying to convert the video (why again???): video cant get converted i can only click ok.
    way4
opened the canon h264 video with streamclip to an mp4 file
dropped that video to iDVD, preview works again fine
burning to disc, menu gets created, when rendering video iDVD cant render the video i can only click ok.
it seems as linux-User i am uncapable to burn a video-DVD with macOS X
could someone give me the proper tip to get the video to disc?
    best regards
    thomas

ref. way 3 - don't publish imovie video to idvd. you lose too much resolution. As for the other issues, anyone else?

  • Error message when burning to Sony DVD-r discs

Just bought 200 Sony DVD-R printable discs from Costco, and I am trying to burn a 15 minute short film in DVD studio pro. The DVD just spins in Formatting and I get this message:The recording device reported the media error: Unknown device error.
I have burned this same film many times with my Nexxtech DVD's and it works fine, but the Sony discs don't seem to work. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    D-

Try burning at the lowest possible speed (probably DVDx2) and see if they work.

  • Burning Video to DVD Is Just Like Burning Audio to CD

We can burn purchased audio (songs) to CD to play in a stand-alone CD player.
Why can't we burn purchased video (TV shows, etc.) to DVD to play in a stand-alone DVD player?

A workaround to this is to use Snaps Pro X (assuming you use a Mac, there may be a suitable program for Windows). Snapz records whatever you select on the screen as video/audio or screen shot. So that means rather than coverting a file you have to play the video and sit through it while Snapz records it, which can be rather tedious. The results are excellent though. Once it is recorded using Snapz you can do whatever you like with it, it's no longer copy protected.

  • Burn videos to dvd

Is there a best way to burn itunes videos to a dvd? Will the dvd work? Thanks.

Neither. The owners of the content have required that Apple not make videos burnable. Whether this will change at some point in the future, no one here knows or can say.
