Burnt Display

I have a new 27"iMac and have been working on some word documents today with both Adobe Bridge and photoshop open underneath. When I closed down Word I noticed the documents had 'burnt' themselves into the screen and against the dark Adobe programmes behind. I restarted the iMac but I the document images  are still visible in the same place. Is this normal??? Surely I now have to get this fixed by Apple? Any ideas guys? Thanks.

After leaving iMac switched off for a good 15 minutes, it seems it's cooled down and the burnt images have started to fade. Needless to say, I'm going to leave it shut down completely for a few more hours, but in all my years of using Mac's, Word & Adobe, I have never experienced this.

  • Burnt display port

My LED display was hooked to my MacBook air and then its stopped working.... after troubleshooting for a while I notice that the Mini-Display port on my MacBook and the cord is singed. Now the Display is inoperable. This happen to anyone else? Can I get my port fixed? Purchase a new cable for the display?

First thing is to check your MacBook with a known good screen and adaptor, I'm sure your local Apple dealer would oblige by checking it on a Cinema display or with one of their adaptors.
Otherwise, do you have a DVD/Bluray or PS3 etc. that you could check the HDMI on your Aquos is working ok?
I assume when you plug into your Aquos the MacBook doesn't show a detected screen under 'Detect Displays' in the Display Prefs menu

  • Burnt discs full of static

When I burn discs with iTunes, I find that nearly always the later songs start filling up with static, until they are almost completely full of it. This usually kicks in around the 8th/9th/10th track on each CD.
Can anyone suggest what kinds of things might be an issue? I realise faulty media (I'm using Sony Imation - they're usually pretty good) is one possibility. But are there any hardware issues as well - could my burner be damaged or faulty?

I have experienced the same issue. It became serious enough that I had the Apple store replace the superdrive. All the music in my iTunes folder is Apple Lossless encoded. The discs I burn are audio discs. The blank discs have a nominal capacity of 700MB. After some in-home analysis, here is what I've found:
    1. I fed one of the malfunctioning discs into my Mac, and info'd it. The info window showed that the disc had 772MB stored on it. Well, that's not possible, so I got to thinking about it.
    2. When I was burning discs, I was only looking at the total time of each playlist. If the playlist was less than 80 minutes (the maximum capacity of the blank discs), iTunes would burn the disc.
    3. Problem is, a playlist can be less than 80 minutes but when the Apple Lossless-encoded songs are expanded for a burn to an audio CD, the total size may exceed 700MB.
    4. My opinion is that there is a bug in the iTunes software; that is, it allows us to burn a playlist to an audio CD even if the playlist will exceed the nominal capacity of the CD after the compressed files are expanded.
    5. There ought to be a function in iTunes that allows a user to determine the expanded size of a compressed playlist, to determine if it will actually fit onto a blank CD. Simply referencing the playlist duration doesn't help.
This obviously begs the questions: by what process is iTunes burning a playlist to a blank CD when the expanded playlist exceeds 700MB? And how can the CD, once it's burnt, display >700MB when you insert it into the Mac's drive and check its stats? And why does iTunes allow burns when the size of the expanded playlist exceeds 700MB?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • My retina display has the top task bar burnt into the screen?

The top and bottom task bar looked to be burnt into the screen on my MacBook Pro Retina Display.  Is this possible or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

  • Burnt image problem on 23" Display solved?????

We had this problem on a new 23" Apple Cinema Display. We tried it on several machines and various resets etc but no difference.
We put it in the car and took it to demonstrate the fault. When we arrived the fault had was not there and has yet to reappear. It seems that driving the monitor in its box for 60 miles on the hottest day of the year so far (in the UK) has solved the problem for the time being.
    Go figure.
    Jonathan

Well if it was hot and you took it outside, maybe you just gave it a chance to clear that notorious fog out of it's head:)

  • Cinema display 24" burned and died

I wonder if anyone can give me any advice. I bought the £650 24" Apple Cinema Display 18 months ago from the Apple Store. On Friday I got a burning smell and it died.
Took it into the Apple store on Monday. They said it is out of warranty and that they could repair it for £500 - LCD fail.
Does anyone know if I have any consumer rights with this? Surely I should expect a £650 monitor to last longer than 18 months? At the time of purchase they didn't even offer me an extended apple care warranty.
Apple products usually have such long lives. I have an 8 year old ipod and 4 year old MBP and they are both still going strong!

Update: This may be useful for anyone else who has had the same issue.
Took my display to an independent but Apple Authorised repair centre where I had them run a diagnostic test on it. Turns out it was the logic board which had burnt out which they said was a manufacturing fault.
So the £500 repair quoted by the Genius Bar actually turned out to be £80.
I also had this repair done free of charge as I used my my consumer rights - the Sales of Goods Act 1979. This applies to the UK only and should cover you for up to 6 years.
It also states on the Apple warranty page that in the EU they cover items for 2 years if it's proved to be a manufacturing fault.
Thanks Apple, my cinema display is now back on my desk
Hope this post may help someone else in the same predicament!

  • Macbook pro retina 15 mid-2012 display problem : solution :)

Well. This topic is not really a question, I hope this could be a solution for both users and Apple. Its free, but if Apple wants to offer me a full options Mac Pro, or hire me as consultant we can discuss ^^
The story is long, but is worth. Sorry in advance for my swissy english. I hope you'll enjoy.
As many of retina mid-2012 owners (and perhaps other versions) I encountered the symptom of my machine crashing more and more frequently (from once per week to more times per day). Crash usually with a message of "read error" or some display related crash dumps, often linked to the switching of graphic card (integrated<->dedicated).
For a long times a suspected some burnt chip (because of using 1-3 external screen all the day) and seeing istatmenu with crazy temperatures of 90-105°C. I was disappointed because of the evolving symptom (crashes more and more frequent and sometimes no display at power on)
It took me ages to discover what exactly did my MBPR crash, as it was crashing "randomly" for me. Sometimes after crashing, hard shutdown and restart, it wouldn't display or even power on the backlight, for one hour or one day and suddenly it would display again !!
I tried all the solutions found here and there including replacing the thermal paste, smc or pram reset -> no luck.
I took it to my local Apple provider and I was told I would have to change the motherboard. An expensive operation, since the warranty was expired by 2-3 months.
So I bought a 13 inchs retina as replacement and continued to diagnose my 15 inchs in parallel.
I discovered that it would crash if I bend it : Power on, one hand on each side applying a light bend in the two directions made my MBPR crash. So suddenly the problem wasn't random anymore. Mouhahahaha. This could be motherboard or chip related (de-soldered solderings here or there), or case related. Let's hope the problem's not mobo related.
I opened the case and tried to see in the dark if I could see a mini lightning when bending (because of a bad ground somewhere). -> No luck
So I tried to put paper here and there to try to locate the potential bad ground. Booting, bending, hard shutdowning, papering, booting, bending,...
And suddenly the darkness became light : If I put a paper at the right place, my MBPR will resist to the bend test. Was my mobo alive, and was this nightmare only a progressive bad ground ? Yes.
Here me good : the progressive symptom of random crashing of my MBPR (which I imputed for a long time to an old chip since the symptom was the same under windows 7 bootcamp + because of the graphic switching behaviour) was in fact only a bad contact at a very given place.
The very given place (my diagnose and my solution) ?
The screws of the left's fan (thunderbolt's side) or/and the fan case itself are screwed through the motherboard. For a reason (temperature, mecanic constraints or corrosion) this stuff entered in contact with each other, the redox gained the near electronic motherboard tracks (especially the thunderbolts one I guess).
    Proof :
If I put a piece of paper between the motherboard and the case, I can bend my MBPR without it to crash and use it as before (except for external screens).
    My diagnose :
once the material of the screw/fan case/motherboard track enter in direct contact, there is a corrosion effect that affects more and more the neighboor.
Here is a pic of my repair :
    I can now :
play hours in windows 7 bootcamp
switch between graphic cards with gfxcardstatus (even with a playing itunes animation)
sleep and wake up with integrated or dedicated graphics
    I can't :
connect a screen through thunderbolt since it activates the corosionned part of my MBPR, so it will work for a period of time but will assure me that a crash is awaiting (perhaps after a wake up or randomly from this time)
I'm confident that this problem is conceptual and that a big part of 15 inches retina mobo's exchanges are due to this question.
    Hope this helps
    Kisses from Switzerland

I tried to diagnose this mid 2012 retina 15 inchs for a couple of month now. With a very similar symptom of a lot of people :
some that exchanged the motherboard more times and experienced again the same freezes / shutdown again
some that installed mavericks by believing it workarounded the problem (but majority also says after a while that actually the problem was only differently reproduceable)
some hoping Apple to release a sowtware fix for that or a recall of the concerned machines
I now think to have isolated one of the cause of such symptoms. At beginning I thought that the fan electric insulation had worked but actually not.
    Solution for me :
    open the under case
dismount a bit the two fans
insert paper bands under the motherboard (between the black bottom and the motherboard, I used ~120gr/m2 paper and cut it into bands of 10-13cm by 2-3cm).
I would have dismounted the motherboard if I had the right screwdriver, but this seemed to be a too long/hard work, so I went into this idea that my motherboard was ok and that the problem was only caused by a supposed short-circuit under the motherboard.
    My thoughts :
The more big the hole in the black tape under the motherboard, the more frequent the freezes / shutdown due to a short circuit (electronics grounded at the false place because of the mobo entering in contact with a grounded metal part through the black tape)
I also thinks this short circuit is more dedicated graphics linked than integrated and that this is the reason why the symptom persists or reappear even after multiple motherboard exchanges for a lot of people and the reason some people use their machine with forced integrated graphics
This solution should apply as self doable for a lot of people
If I should bet, I think that the black insulating tape under the keyboard is scratched by the time (mecanic constraints on the chassis) by some mobo component until a false contact is created through the insulating tape
    I can now (mid-2012 retina 15 inchs I7 8go 256go, osx 10.10.2) :
run firefox or VLC with integrated or dedicated graphicssleep/wake with integraded or dedicated graphics (forced or auto-switching) with such programs runningrun multiple screens (2x TB + HDMI at the same time), sleep the machine, unplugging 1 of the 3 screens during the sleep, wake the machine + bending the machine during the process without it to crash. \o/
The goal of this post is to share this amazing experience with both Apple and the users facing such a problem.
Problem solved without motherboard exchange and with a quite easy workaround

  • MacBook Pro 15" Retina display was broken inside

My daughter has a MBP15" with retina display and she found retina display broken on the left bottom area inside without any damage of outside screen surface.
It looks like several burnts inside.
And she went to Apple store, but store employee told her that it was caused by my daughter's fault like inserted a kind of hard material and closed the display. So they asked almost > $700 to replace it.
So I am wondering how come a hard material made internal damage only without any minor scratch or crack outside???
Does anybody have any idea about this?

it could have been done by putting pressure on the top of the mac with it closed and no scratches or cracks would necessarily show up.  I would ask your daughter again what happened.  This  isn't a manfacturer defect and is not covered under warranty.

  • Apple 23" HD Cinema Display no longer working with new Macbook Pro

I bought a 23" used HD Cinema display the other day along with the ADC-DVI and DVI-Mini Display adapters. I had it hooked up and it was working perfectly for 3 days. Today my wife tried to connect her Macbook accidentally via the USB that is part of the ADC-DVI adapter which didn't work (why is that USB there anyway?). Then when she went to connect the external display back to my Macbook Pro it did not wake up after being connected. I have tried resetting the PRAM on the MBP and have disconnected and re-connected all connections but nothing will get the display working with the MBP anymore. When I connect and disconnect the mini-display plug into the MBP the MBP flashes the blue screen as it appears to be reacting, but that's it. I can't detect any display when I go into the display system preferences. Does anyone know how I can get the Apple Cinema display working again? Thanks for any help.

There are couple of long threads in the display section about problems with the power supplies on the 23" HD DVI. See this one for instance: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17981683#17981683
Mine one day just wouldn't turn on -- connected to an old G4 MDD and the Mini -- a bit of fiddling it would occasionally start up, sometimes not. Similar to what you described, the Macs would see it in System Profiler, but it just wouldn't turn on.
Based on that thread, I figured the problem was mostly likely the power supply. A local authorized repair place didn't have a spare for me to try, but the tech sniffed it and mentioned it the burnt electronics smell. LOL, I sniffed it and sniffed the power supply for my 20" DVI Cinema display -- indeed a weird smell.
Based on that thread, I decided to bite the bullet and buy a beefier 150" power supply for the 30" Cinema display, which Apple says in compatible with the 23". See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2803
I hooked it up, crossed my fingers, and it fired up right away. It's been working fine for about 3 months now. Cheaper than buying a new monitor.

  • Hp 8560w booting into black screen, seems to be booting without display

    Hi,
Ive got this elitebook 8650w from a friend who asked me to help him try to get it to run.
First thing noticable that something was wrong with this machine  is when it started shutting down/rebooting randomly,  i suspected overheating since it hadnt been cleaned and doing these shutdowns while it was running 3d games.
I told my friend he had to get it cleaned or it could sustain damage.
The next day the system started to reboot right after it completed windows logon, getting into a loop.
I suspected the temprature failsafe was doing this, because after the system did one cold start,it would boot to windows, reboot on its own and then wouldnt get through the boot process alltogether and just showed a black screen with the cooling fan running at top speed, capslock blinking.
It wasnt even showing the hp bios startup screen anymore.
I tried hooking up a monitor to the external vga,  but the monitor goes into standy and remains black.
I know it did boot onto windows eventhough it was showing a blackscreen because i could type in the logon password, wait a bit and then shutdown the system with pressing alt-f4, enter.
clearly the system boots but just the display isnt working. but it isnt giving off any beeps or showing anything on boot.
So i took out the cooling parts and cleaned it to redo the thermal paste.
the job had previously  been done by hp, and turned out to be done very very poorly,   half the GPU didnt even have thermal paste onit, a big airbubble prevented contact for more then 2/4th of the gpu surface.
i feared a burnout,  but the surface didnt show discoloration and it had been working like this since he got it.
Eventhough it was a poor job done, it didnt seem to be burnt and the temperature failsafe just saved it from burning out.
After thouroughly cleaning the big blobs of paste hp put there most of it ending up next to the gpu and cpu instead of onit, blobs big enough to cover atleast 4 of the same type gpu's/cpu's
I redid the thermal paste using arctic silver number 5, the way it should be done and then reinstalled the blocks and heatpipes.
It all went smoothly into place and i reassembled the parts taken off the laptop.
Confident i rebooted, nothing changed and the problem persisted, it seems to be booting, but the screen doesnt display a thing, and stays completely black.
Shining a light onto the screen doesnt reveal any unlit graphics due to a broken backlight or anything.
Since it went through this loop often and me and my friend have been pressing keys to see if it would boot into a bios screen or anything i suspected the bios might have gotten screwed up, so i decided to try and restore default bios.
But how to do that without a screen?   i tried locating a bios jumper to do this  but didnt find any.
Then i found a text the hp forom saying i could force factory setting by pressing f10  repeatedly  5x times during startup, then f5  for default and then f10 to safe and exit, enter.
I did try that a couple of times,  but the machine doesnt reboot as it should when you safe an exit bios, s i dont even know if i get into bios in reality.
Now ive come across a few known problems with this machine in my forumcrawling.
2 problems wich results in the same behaviour are : 1 a faulty mobo and 2 a faulty board for the webcam behind the top of the display somehow preventing the screen to work properly.
So , dear hp support -  are there any known problems and sulotions to them other then, drain power and boot again?
If this machine did appear on the market with some of em having a faulty mobo, like some mssges say, why is that not on the  official forum, and could i be dealing with such a machine,  how do i find out?
If im dealing with a broken display,  could that have been caused by a videocard overheating?
You can help me by telling me:
-Can i force bios default without having an active screen? if so,  how?  just pulling the battery and draining power didnt change a thing.
-Can i find out if GPU is broken  (the system does seem to boot in the dark on a cold start)
-Can i find out if the display is broken by blinking messages or someting?
-Are there other known problems with this machine that give these failures as a result?
Can it be theres a broken inverter for the backlight? i geuss not, the vga port would be working then.
    hopefull for an answer,
    A friend's computer fixer.

I brought it into the Apple Store and I was completely denied of the 8600m GT recall. I am not paying $800 for a **** logic board replacement! Seriously, what the ****!?
I find this problem just as bad as the 8600m GT failures because this isn't the only forum I've been too that have people complaining about the same thing.
I don't know what to do anymore. Money doesn't grow on trees and I need a working laptop for school.
If anyone has any other suggestions please don't hesitate to let us know here.
Good luck to the rest of you!

  • CS4 Blu-ray subtitles not displayed correctly

    Hi all,
I have been trying to find anything regarding my issue with Blu-ray subtitles using Google and the search function on this forum, but I could not find anything about it.
I have a CS4 Blu-ray project with one main timeline and a few other timelines (to be "extras" on the Blu-ray). On the main timeline I imported two subtitle tracks from a Text file and chose the default import settings in Encore. The first subtitle track is English and the second subtitle track is Dutch, but it also happens when I just import one subtitle track.
The other timelines (for the extras) do not contain any subtitle track (as they do not require it), but the issue also appears when I only added the main time line (as first play) without any menus etc.
The issue is that at first the subtitles seem to display correctly when a Blu-ray burnt from this project is played on a standalone Blu-ray player (Panasonic DMP-BD30 with latest firmware). However, when I skip to another chapter (using the remote's "Next" or "Previous" button), or fast forward or rewind the video on the player the subtitles are gone and will never return. Also when the main timeline is played without any skipping or fast forwarding etc. the subtitles suddenly disappeared and reappeared after some time.
When checking the imported subtitles in the Encore project's time line display, all subtitles are in place.
Additionally, the Blu-ray player's "Subtitle" button does not bring up a selection of available subtitles (which it does on other commercially available Blu-rays), while the timelines allowed actions are set to "All" (the default).
I have also checked the Encore project's "Sources" folder and found .png images for all of the subtitle texts I imported, so it seems that all subtitles are available.
Does anyone have seen this issue before and know how to solve it?
Note: it might be of interest that the main timeline is a single H.264 encoded video file of approx. 7Gb playing for approx 45 minutes. The format is 1080/50i (PAL HDV in the resolution 1440x1080).

The short answer is that you can't use a subtitle menu successfully until Adobe does an Encore update which was working in a special build that I saw at NAB but never made it info a formal release.
The problem is that the generated Blu-ray instructions for selecting the subtitle (and audio) tracks is just plain wrong. The way it was supposed to work is that a GPR (general purpose register) was supposed to retain the selected value, but among other things the code always immediately clears the register after saving the correct value.
There was a similar but different problem in CS4 and we devised a solution with our BluStreak Premaster application, by post-processing the Encore build folder prior to burning or replication.
    http://blustreak.dvdafteredit.com/
However to fix the CS5 code would require re-multiplexing of the menus, at which point we gave up, since we don't have a Blu-ray multiplexer. Don't consider going back to CS4, however, since in most other respects the CS5 navigation is far superior.
So your best bet is to ping on Adobe and ask them, when are you going to release this fix?
With these bugs, the only way to properly set audio and subtitle tracks is with the remote functions themselves, or by using set stream and link directly to the main video from a normal menu.

  • Why is there a small green dot on middle of macbook pro screen display

There is a green dot on my screen that always appears when I'm on my desktop. Also, it sometimes appears ranodmely when using other applications... for exapmle: Safari, Microsoft Word, iTunes, GTA, etc... Just randomely it will show and it won't go away. I've tried cleaning the screen with the cloth that came in the macbook pro box. Is it a software issue or a display issue, or is there a burnt pixel? I have the new Macbook Pro 2012.

  • MacBook Air burnt...

Okay, this should be a typical night, in that I want to watch a documentary video on my MacBook Air. As usual, I am preparing my external display. The HDMI cable that I have had been using, and that worked great was connected to the TV receiver. Besides that, I have a new, sealed cable which I have not opened, because I did not need it. So I thought I'd use this one. The was the worst decision of my life. I connected one end to the monitor, and one in MiniDisplay Port to HDMI adapter. I thought that when I plug the adapter the laptop image will appear. I was wrong.
When the two connectors met, 4 (yes, four) big sparks appeared. One in the adapter, charger plug, HDMI adapter, and monitor. That besides some deafening noise. I removed everything from the outlet, hoping that something very serious has not happened. But I was not lucky ... Everything smelled burnt. From the charger to the monitor.
I do not understand what happened. The other cable I have had not the slightest problem. Over 2000USD are gone. But maybe Noumax or iStyle (our Apple resellers) will understand and hopefully change the laptop (which of course is under warranty). I'm very afraid of a refuse.
The monitor is a BenQ 22" 1080p. It was used with my laptop and TV receiver with no problem. It's new, i have had it for two months. Now I write on my phone (HTC Desire) in the hope that someone could give someone a tip or two.
    Thanks.

I am wondering if there was something in the wiring of the HDMI cable that cause the short circuit. Best thing I can recommend is take the computer and cables into a service provider or call Apple Support.

  • Macbook Retina Displays

I just stopped by the University Village Apple Store to get my screen replaced. Third time in a year that I have had to replace hardware-first time to replace all the dots on my screen, second time to replace a chord that was burnt all the way through, and now to replace the screen again.
I bought this computer for my study abroad to Brazil where I thought apple could bring an amazing, quality, and piece I could rely on for quite some time.
I have had apple products for over 10 years now-as I realize the hardware associated with apple could become a mythos for me. Never have I ever had an such an unprofessional/subpar customer service experience until today.
I walked and set up an appointment to be met later than the time scheduled. I was asked what the issues were and explained it. I was given the first option by a nice genius named Raleigh saying they would fix it for the equivalent for the apple care warranty($400). I asked to speak the manager. The manager told me that "Products fail","It's a month out of the year warranty"."That screen is worth $600", "Apple products last longer than the industry other" boiler plate responses. How much is a screen worth if it doesn't work? Every other screen I have owned has lasted longer than a year.
I told him that this is clearly a problem with the hardware and that it failed several times within a year,I work two jobs(don't have a l of money),nobody told me that I had that 90 day option to cover the warranty right went I left the last two times, and I would like it replaced immediately. He told me "Ok, I but this time we'll run diagnosis". Is Apple telling me that they don't run diagnosis? What stopped them from running it the first time? We all knew what the problem was and what needed to be replaced. This is an issue that has repeatedly happened. LCD displays last longer than a year. New LCDs last longer than a year.
The manager bargained down the replacement a little because he knew I was right. But I was never offered anything more meaningful. I was given the same phrases more than several times in a row when given reasons for why I should pay them. If I wanted to get a flat response I would have written to a computerized sales support played by HAL.
When I got my ipod it was the first time feeling an attachment to technology-an emotion of unbelievable...magic. I had music that I could hear anytime anywhere and it has lasted since. I bought the retina MacBook Pro for movies, games, and great reliability. My Dell laptop has lasted more than 5 years-no screen or hardware issues and will continue to work further along the line. Prove me wrong Apple. 2k is a premium for laptops or any computer and I expect that a normal product would be the same within a year. Apple has not rekindled my faith.
If either Steve is listening let me know that you are there!

I took the computer in for a display with white dots that don't go away on the screen. Pretty sure they are dead pixels. Apparently this a wide spread LG screen issue. Can only be fixed with a replacement probably.

  • Burnt LED line in my LCD screen

I have a burnt led line in my LCD screen on my Mid 2011 MacBook Pro, I found a place that sells the part (I understand Apple does not sell such at the Apple Stores in the US). My question to the community is, if I purchase the replacement LCD screen, can I take it to an Apple Store and pay for them to replace it?
    Thank you in advance,
    Franklin

The mercury you are talking about is actually found in the backlight... not the display itself (and in very small quantities). You would pretty much have to smash the display in order to damage the fluorescent light behind it. Most newer notebooks use LED backlighting which does not contain mercury.
