Burnt DVD jumping in DVD players

I've looked at many posts but still my question is not answered.
I have made a short video in FCP HD, output to mv2 file using compressor and 60min high quality encode preset. I have used an AIFF file for the audio. I know that it is better to compress the audio to AC3 but isn't this just relevant for longer times? My video is less than three minutes.
In any case this problem seems to be happening only recently, though I haven't altered my system. It must be the way I'm doing it. The DVDs I made before still play alright in my DVD players. These problem DVDs play fine on the apple desktop i.e. computer, just not in the 2 DVD players that I test them on. One of these is a Samsung combie, the other is a Mico that usually plays everything. I mean they play, but they jump wildly and in the Samsung loud and sharp crackles come from the speakers. It's a real nightmare.
I've used DVD SP 1.5 to build and even tried just dragging the compressed video file + audio into toast and burn that way. The worst scenario of all seems to happen when I use disk utility to burn the disc image from DVD SP. That's when the real **** breaks lose. I just want a DVD that is as reliable as poss. for sending off for screening. I don't know what kind of player my host will have.
I don't know where the problem is coming from. Any help available?
thanks

Hi:

The biggest problems of using AIFF (uncompressed ) audio in your DVD-R builds is the bitrate that your audio uses, what in a lot of players can "jump wildly". The secondaru advantage of using AC3 is the space saving issue.
Then do encode your audio to AC3 allways.
I can't remember but, DVDSP 1.5 did include A.Pack? I think so ! You can find this Encoding AC3 with A.Pack (from KenStone site) tutorial useful.
Try re-encoding your audio and let us know !

  • Burnt DVD's jumping over time?

I have given my client 4 DVD's burnt in DVDSPro about 2 months ago, now he is having problems with them, they keep sticking and jumping at different parts in the film. They were ok for the first few months, I use Maxell 1-16x speed blanks.
Do DVD's deteriate over time? Is this possible? He has tried them in various players but the same thing keeps happening, could it be a bitrate problem?
The film is about 1 hour long with chapter menus, should I be using Compresser to encode the film to MV2 and ac3? Usually I export directley from FCPro to Quicktime for the video then Compresser for the audio to ac3.

    Maxell's are usually pretty reliable

As mentioned they can go bad, scratches and dirt occur which will affect playback (I have seen it often from movies I have rented on replicated discs. Some of my players will be able to play the movies while others will not.)
could it be a bitrate problem?
It could be coupled with the scratches/dirt other detoriation issues. DVD Players have error correction built in and some handle scratches and dirt better than others.
    (Take a look at http://www.videohelp.com/glossary?E#Error%20Correction)
And when there is a higher bitrate, error correction can take a hit
    http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bbe302a
So to the extent their is a scratch, dirt or detoriation, there is a chance it is exacerbated by the encoding rate

Encode outside DVD SP and make sure to A.Pack the audio, that will keep rate alot lower

  • Burnt DVD will work on computers but NOT on DVD players

Hi everybody just hoping I could get some help with this please
I'm attempting my first project which is just a DVD of my holiday to the USA
The main menu has a PLAY ALL button and a SCENE SELECT button
In the SCENE SELECT menu there are a list of links (places I visited) that take you to another sub-menu which are ANAHEIM, LAS VEGAS, SAN DIEGO, HOLLYWOOD, HAWAII, etc. Each of these sub-menus will have either more sub-menus or will start playing the chapter that the user selects
When I play the DVD on my PC everything works perfectly and so do all the menu links. I've tried PowerDVD, Windows player, and Nero and they all work! I even tried the DVD I burnt on my laptop and that too works fine without any problems
The problem occurs when I try and play the DVD on my 3 different DVD players around the house!
The DVD players are a SONY, an LG, and a cheapo generic brand
With all 3 DVD players the PLAY ALL button works fine
All the locations in the SELECT SCENE menu also work EXCEPT for the first location which is ANAHEIM
Not a single link on the ANAHEIM menu works and when you try to select one of the links, 2 of the DVD players will freeze and 'crash' the DVD which I then have to switch the power off and restart and on the other DVD player the DVD just automatically stops and I have to press start again
Anybody know why this is happening? The main difference between ANAHEIM and the rest of the locations is that ANAHEIM has more sub-menus than the rest. Basically each section of both Disney parks has it's own menu
I thought maybe I went over some kind of limit that I'm not aware of BUT the DVD works on both PC's that I tested it on
Does the brand of the blank DVD I used play a role? I also burnt it at a slow speed so not sure what else to try
    Thanking you all in advance!

One of my main tests to rule out buring issues is to play on the computer.  So yes, your disk/burning have to be suspect.
What brand/type of media?  What speed?  You have outlined excellent information, but, in the end, specifics help.
It should not matter, but what version of Encore?
That said, it is odd that it is one submenu and its submenus.  I assume single layer DVD?
There is a 1 Gig limit on the size of all menus including motion assets.  I wonder if this can be involved?
Try burning a DVD+RW for a test.  Try any different media that you have around.  In the end Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim still get the most recommendations here.

  • Blocky video on burnt dvd.

Hi, sorry if this has been dealt with before but I'm not too wise just yet with final cut studio and have been having some trouble with blocky video on dvd.
I shot some video using hd pal and captured that in fcp. I used the corresponding timeline. I was then advised to export the project using self-contained-file with encoder ProRes 422, and to then put this through compressor using dvd90minute and changing dialogue normalisation to -31, compression preset to 'none' and the average bit rate from 6.8 to 8.0. I then imported this into dvd studio and burnt the dvd. When this plays back some of the shots, not all of them, randomly appear blocky, some more than others. I am obviously doing something wrong when exporting and/or compressing.
If someone could give some advice, it would be really great!
    Thanks.

Hi, this does occur on playback on all dvd players.
It occurs at moments of static camera. One particular part, it is just someone sitting down talking and the video doesn't look right as it plays. It then becomes blocky and as it plays the entire picture sort of jumps to and fro blocky to normal in quick succession. This doesn't occur throughout, only in some parts, and the parts that it does not happen aren't any different in content than the ones that do jump.
If you need any more information in what I've done let me know. Hope you can help. Thanks.

  • DVD Menu not working right in DVD Players

    Hi All,
I'm hoping you can help me. I'm using a Windows machine. I've created a video in Premiere CS5, dynamic linked it to Encore CS5 and created a Main Menu (with a button to play the whole video and a button to the sub menu) and Sub Menu for scene selection (Containing 9 scene buttons and back button). It works fine with the simulation Remote control buttons on Encore's Preview test.
I have burnt the DVD and tested it in two DVD players one old and one new. The Main menu shows but I can't do anything else. It's animated but it pauses/freezes and them moves again, so it doesn't play smooth on either.
On one DVD player occasionally it looks like you can select the up and down button on the DVD remote control to select the two buttons, but nothing happens when you press the remote Play Button.
I've played it on my computer the menu selects fine with the mouse. The video however played for a few mins before it froze. But I'm not to concerned with the computer play. Just need it to work on DVD.
I have clicking on the 'Show Button Routing' button in the Menu viewing window and NONE of the buttons left, right, up or down are set to 0. So if I'm right in believing the remote should be able to navigate around all the buttons. However, I'm not sure whether the Auto Routing is ticked somewhere as I can't find it. My gut feeling is that this isn't the problem as the menu does not play smoothly and is freezing on and off like it's malfunctioning.
Any advice would be great. Many thanks,
    Eve

    Hi Stan,
    Many thanks for the reply.
I always run in admin mode otherwise the DVD's don't burn at all.
The animated buttons are on the next screen, 'scene selections'. Which I can't get to.
The animations I was referring to are the swirls and film on the background they pause and freeze for a few seconds then play again as if the DVD is not being read properly.
How would I turn off animated buttons anyway?
Nothing happens with I press the Play button either so I can't go straight into the film.
    Thanks,
    Eve

  • Is There A Way To Make It Play On All DVD Players?

Hey my friend told me with DVD Studio Pro that you can make it so it plays on all dvd players now so that even ones before who wouldnt be able to play a burnt dvd will play them. Is this true or will it only be for players that have that feature for DVD R-?

If you go to Replication you have a chance your disc will play on all players as it will be DVD-Video but if you burn the disc and send it out to whoever is going to see it, it'll be DVD±R (DL) therefore the disc will be recordable media.
The basic concept to understand is that the discs you buy from a store (a la a feature film) are not the same as the discs you burn. The discs you burn are not 100% compatible but can be easily made more or less compatible if you don't know what you're doing.
Of course, as mentioned, if only 100 users will see your disc the chances are your disc will play fine for all 100 people are much higher than they used to be...

  • I can watch my custom DVD in iDVD 7 preview but burnt dvd plays back black with only the audio

I can watch my custom created DVD in iDVD 7 preview but once the disc is burnt and I play it back in DVD Player, the screen is black with only the audio playing back. I have tried using three different blank DVD manufactures.

    Hi
Most probably depends on what movie codec You feed iDVD. May be You find any clue here.
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show

  • Hardware DVD players skipping past last chapter into second track.

We are having trouble with hardware DVD players skipping past the last chapter marker and into the second track instead of returning to the menu. The only way we see to stop this is to disable the last chapter markers playback control/next program option. This will work to stop the jump to the next track but quickly cycling through the chapters will allow jumping to the next track.
    Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to the Boards
Yeah sometimes you can blow through the disable depending on the player and how fast you press. One thing I have used is a second marker which also disables the UOPs so that there is two disables in a row which seems to stop most players from blowing through the stop.

  • DVD players stop after 99 pictures

Both the iDVD and Toast 8 software apparently group pictures into groups of 99 and call it a 'slideshow'. When the DVD exceeds 99 pics, the software creates a 'second slide show'. When some DVD players come to the end of slide show, they stop and then keep going (the DVD player built into the computer does this) but some DVD players do not recognize the second show and just stop - when you try to restart, the player starts back at the beginning of the DVD. I am using Verbatim R-DVD discs recorded at 1x speed on the disc utility (not using iDVD to make the disc). Does anyone know how to seamlessly move from one 99 picture slideshow to the next and to the next? This has been a frustrating problem.
    Andy A

The official DVD standard allows for 99 chapter in a movie. When you create a slideshow, you are actually creating a movie with each photo being a chapter. While the standard is 99 chapters, SOME DVD players will play more than 99 some will not. iDVD used to only allow 99 photos in a slide show but has since got rid of that restriction, but the official DVD standard is still 99 chapters.
Therefore, when you do create a slideshow with more than 99 photos (chapters) there is no guarantee that all DVD players will be able to deal with that.
I am not aware of a way to "link" one movie into another (again with a Slideshow simply being a movie) to have a DVD player know to jump from one to another.

  • Simple Autoplay in DVD Players

    Hi,
I had asked a few questions in the Pro forum regarding the process of Pro to Encore to DVD, which is here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1118164?start=0&tstart=0
I'm familiar with Pro, and have watched the tutorials on Encore (CS4).  But I don't "get it" and I just wanted to know, if I have imported my "Exported" MPEG2-DVD from Pro, and have already imported the timeline into Encore, and imported and placed the .wav file right under the timeline, how:
    1. Do I just select the first frame-image of the disc to begin an autoplay when insterted into standard DVD players (no crazy stuff - just it goes in, it begins playing, no other menu options)?  And if I don't even need to select that "first-frame image" (which I suspect I do for Encore to associate the action with), then that's fine too (as long as it will just begin playing).
    Thank You!
    (and Happy Holidays)!

"So you might have a menu of just the last frame, with the timeline end action being that menu. And the end action of that menu being "stop." The menu should be set to hold forever, so the only real stop will be when the user clicks stop."
    Thanks Stan!
Got the 3rd one, and set a few chapter points just to jump to if desired!  Thanks!
And as for the 2nd question: not sure if that means - I should set it to "hold forever".  (I do see that option there on the right side under "Menu / Motion - Properties").  I just watched the video on "menus" but again it shows it using a Photoshop image with titles.  So if this is my only/best option, HOW do I do that (create a menu I guess of just the last frame, and then what do I do with it)?
My only guess is - select the exact frame near the end of the Timeline, and choose "New Menu".  Having never created or used a menu in Encore before, I will guess that: that creates essentially a still image of that exact frame at the end, and allows me to set a specific action for it now.  If any of this is right, I'm not sure if I should now also "point" the menu to anything as I did the "sequence 1" before in the flow chart.  I would think so.  (I did try creating the menu and then pointing from the END of the sequence in the flowchart, and think this could be correct/what you mean).
And I am still not sure if I need to set another specific action for the menu (you said "stop" and the default is set to "stop").  And the "End Action" - hold forever IS checked.
    - But when I play the Timeline, I do NOT see the menu at the end (the way I believe you mean - meaning that it plays that near-final frame "now-still-image" and plays it in a loop).  I actually don't see it playing at all or any duration for it in the last screenshot image, on the right side.
    Thanks a ton!

Ok, si I have DVD studio Pro 4. I have burnt a DVD of a video obviosuly. it plays perfectly fine on my Mac, but it will not play on any of my DVD players. I'm not sure where or not it has to do with Closing the disc, and I'm not sure how to that either.
I'm kind of new to this whole Mac thing. I'm also not sure whether or not my DVD players will play a DVd I burn with DVD Studios Pro.
So if anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated.

    Hi:
    Wellcome to the forum!
You must post some details of your worflow to let us know what could be wrong, i.e.:
    - Footage format
    - Encoding workflow
    - Burning workflow
By a chance, did you created a HD DVD? DVD players for sure will not play that format.
Come back with some info and you'll get help here for sure!

When I burn a DVD on my T400 (XP-Pro, Mat**bleep**a DVD-RAM UJ862A), it can't be read on most DVD players.  I have tried different brands of DVDs (Memorex, Verbatim) and still no luck.  Any ideas what I can do?  Or do you know where I can download an updated driver?  Thanks.

I guess you would call it a video DVD.  It is just a homemade movie made from a slide show from Windows Movie Maker.  The DVD's I burn on my T400 do play on my son's DVD player which is brand new, and they seem to play on other computers.   But they do not play on either of my DVD players, one of which is about a year old and one is about 3 years old.  If I use the same procedure and same software to burn the DVD on another computer, it plays fine on both my DVD players.  Seems to be something about this DVD drive that has limited compatibility.  Thanks for your help.

  • DVD Plays on computer drives, but not on dvd players

iDVD 06 - This is a new problem, just happened two days ago. Previous dvd's burned with idvd 06 work just fine on old and new dvd players. I always test them after burning. However this new project will only play on computer dvd drives (mac or pc) but not on my dvd players. The menu screen shows up, but when the play button is pushed it never starts. Disk is clean, re-burned dvd, re-exported the video and re-did the entire dvd, same issue. I have not changed any settings in iDVD 06.
Yes, I even re-installed idvd 06, but then somehow I lost some of my old themes (which happened to be the ones I wanted to use) I did back up my previous copy of idvd 06 which has my old plain themes that I love to use in the package, so I do have those. But if I bring them into the newley re-installed idvd 06, all the features do not work. Such as being able to change the type size on that paticular menu.
I am using Verbatim 8X DVD-R's and have successfully used these just the other day on another project! And those work just fine on an old and new dvd player!
I had to get these dvd's because my burner would not burn on the 16X DVD-R's that I recently bought.

Now, if Apple could just get us a firmware update for the SONY DVD RW DW-U10A which came with my G-5 and then maybe we could all burn disks at the new 16X speed! Instead of limiting our possibilites.
Oh and yes, I did contact Sony about firmware updates. They informed me that this is really an OEM drive (whatever that is) and that Sony does not support it!
