Burnt DVD troubleshooting

Well i seem to have a problem mounting DVDs that ive already burnt on my computer. Everytime i put them in, i hear them spinning inside accompanied by some unusual sounds and then it ejects it out again.
However it does mount a blank DVD normally as well as burnt CDs (on another comp).
The DVDs im trying to mount contain video files though not in a DVD format. They used to mount before as well. What has changed? I tried mounting DVDs ive burnt using the mac burning software as well toast, with no luck.

Does no one here actually work at apple? How can i
reach the professionals?
As it describes in link for help and terms of use, this is a user-to-user forum, and as such it's not a good place to try and communicate with Apple themselves. Very occasionally an Apple employee will post here, but given the thousands of posts in these discussions, it's not a practical proposition that they deliver primary support in this way. This is where the wider Mac community try and assist those who, like yourself, are having problems or need to discuss technical issues regarding their systems or Apple products.
To discuss this issue with Apple, call them, or take your mini to an Apple store and discuss the issues you experience at the Genius Bar.

  • Dvd player does not read burnt dvds

i burnt 2 dvds on my macbook pro (leopard). they both play fine on my macbook pro and my toshiba dvd player.
they will not play on my macbook and powermac g4 (tiger).
is this a problem with the dvd player in tiger? if so, any way to update it or download a newer version?

oh sorry i forgot to add that i managed to play some of the contents directly from my storage disk:
    1. open dvd player
    2. select play media
    3. instead of clicking on the FOLDER, like i wld do if i access the video from my macbook pro (leopard), i have to open the folder and click on VIDEO TS inside the folder
it will play this way. but i wonder if some features are lost? and why can't i play directly fr the burnt dvd like i can do on my macbook pro and toshiba dvd player?
sorry this is longwinded... i am rather frustrated here... thx for the help!

  • After using video capture device to copy VHS to DVD, burnt DVD will play on computer but not

After using video capture device to copy VHS to DVD, burnt DVD will play on computer but not on DVD player. Tech support for the VCD said my HP DVD burning software has to burn "DVD Video and not DVD data" and to check with HP. How can i check myself.

    Grahamster, welcome to the forum.
I recommend trying CDBurnerXP for burning video CD's.  I have been using it for years without a glitch.  I use it mainly for burning ISO's, but have used it for all types.  Please let us know if it works or not.

  • MacBook will not play burnt DVDs?

Hi, not sure if anyone posted this topic already so sorry in advance, but i wanted to know why won't my macbook play burnt DVDs. The DVDs worked fine on my dvd player, my other PC etc. When i load the burnt DVD into my macbook it wouldnt recognize the disk and when i open the dvd platey and hit play it would say something like please enter a readable disk. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.
Black MacBook 2.0GHZ 1GB RAM 80GB HD; 5TH GEN Black iPod Video   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I have the same problem with my MacBook 2.0 GHz.
The DVDs in question are DVD-RWs burnt with Pioneer DVR-520H, they work fine on my iMac G4 (DVD-Player & VLC) but when I insert the DVD in my MacBook the DVD-Player doesn't recognize the "media type" and VLC player gives me an error log like this :
vcd: search for kIOCDMediaClass came up empty
vcd: failed to get the TOC
    vcd: no movie tracks found
access_file: file /dev/rdisk1 is empty, aborting
cdda: search for kIOCDMediaClass came up empty
cdda: failed to get the TOC
    cdda: no audio tracks found
main: no suitable access module for `dvdnav:///dev/rdisk1'
macosx: Error: Unable to open 'dvdnav:///dev/rdisk1'
The interesting thing is that the DVD shows fine on my MacBook's desktop, I can open it and when I copy the VIDEO_TS -folder on my hard disk I can play it with no problems with either DVD-player or VLC.
So my MacBook can read the disc, it just can't play it - what could be causing this problem?
I have been suggested trying DVD-Rs instead of DVD-RWs, but I don't think this solves the problem, I wanna be able to play RWs too if they work fine on my iMac G4.
The DVDs have also been tested on PowerBook G4 (works fine) and Intel iMac (the same problem as with my MacBook = doesn't work). The DVDs aren't copied, they have material recorded from TV using the Pioneer DVR-520H (the same machine used for burning the DVDs) on them.
I'm able to play normal, rented or bought DVDs on my MacBook. Both machines are running the latest Tiger OS.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Burnt DVDs no longer recognised on my mac

Recently, my internal drive is acting up. It no longer recognises burnt DVDS. they don't show on the screen and then they just self eject.
Also, when I insert a burnt CD, it is not always recognised on the desktop.
    I'm using 10.7.5. Any suggestions?

    Hi imnokid2,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The resource below will explain how to check your optical drive if it is not recognizing your DVDs.  Does it have any problem reading/playing store-bought DVDs? What software are you using to create the DVDs?
Get help with the slot-loading SuperDrive on your Mac computer - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201788
Accepts discs but they don't mount or are automatically ejected
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
I hope this information helps ....

  • Mac Burnt DVD-R Same As PC?

    Hi. I have a beginner's question...
If I burn a data DVD-R on my iMac, will it be exactly the same as a DVD-R burnt on a PC? Or will it be in some weird Mac format? I've done some tests, and the file system of a Mac burnt DVD-R, and a PC burnt DVD-R, is the same. They both use UDF file systems. Is that all there is to it?

The default is an ISO9660 format disk with Joliet (Windows), RockRidge (UNIX/Linux), and HFS (Mac) extensions. You will be able to read it on anything that reads DVD-R disks.
Generally, Windows burning software only includes the Joliet extensions.
Joliet extensions permit Windows-style long filenames. RockRidge extenstions provide UNIX-style long filenames, file permissions, and file ownership data, and HFS extensions provide file type and file creator information.
The ISO standard specifies that if a particular driver doesn't understand some extension, that the extension should be ignored gracefully. The presence of a particular extension is never required for the data to be readable.

  • My MacBook Pro does not read burnt DVD

    Hi guys,
Does anyone of you alredy encountered the following problem with your optical drive (Matshita DVD-R UJ 857):
    - Perfect CD reading/recording
    - Perfect original DVD reading
    - Perfect DVD burning
    - No or almost no burnt DVD reading.
This is becoming nasty since you back up your stuff on a blank DVD (verbatim DVD-R) but cant read them back...
Anyone out there that has the same pityful problem?
    Let me know,
    .M

I too am having this problem. I spoke with Apple Support and they basically said "if it reads the DVDs we provide then it's not broken". What a joke.
The DVDs I am having problems with are all from commercial software that I purchased, but they are not pressed discs. They are DVD-R or DVD+R (not sure which). The discs do not read on my 15" MBP, but read just fine on my 15" PB and on my desktop Windows system. To me it seems that the new SuperDrive is not so super after all.
Hopefully Apple will hear from enough of us that this is a problem, and then maybe they will actually do something to fix it.
    Cheers

  • Burnt IDVD project, but unable to reburn the burnt dvd?

Ive finished an idvd project burnt it to a dvd, and that works fine which is great, but nieve me deleted the idvd project on the computer thinking i would be able to just burn copies off the one dvd cd copy ive got, but it is appearing impossible? It just burns a bunch of useless files that are not viewable. Is this normal? If not what format changes do i have to make to be able burn a burnt dvd?

Yes, you are correct that you can use third-party software to rip content from a burned DVD disk. You can use Handbrake, Ripit or something like that if you need to re-edit the content of the burned DVD, but you will take a quality loss as the data has to be uncompressed and then recompressed to burn a new DVD.
This person just wanted to know how to burn another DVD of the same; therefore, we gave instructions for how to burn it from the previously burned DVD disk. There is no loss of quality this way.

  • Burnt dvd's

Hello, I just noticed that I am unable to mount burnt dvd's
on my emac. This includes dvds from idvd, data dvd's, and dvd's thru toast. I am able to mount these on a dvd on a pc, or a dvd player, just not on my emac. I have been using the same dvd -r from day 1.
I am using the latest tiger but I have not installed 10.4.7
yet. I also have tried disc repair, still nothing.
    any ideas?

I am having this same problem on a Power Mac G5, which I just upgraded to 10.4.7 a day or two ago. I know I wasn't having this problem with 10.4.6, and I'm certain there's nothing wrong with the discs. Burned CD-ROMs and regular DVDs work fine, but DVD-R will not mount.

  • Superdrive Won't Read Burnt DVD's

    Hi all,
Recently my superdrive has started acting up and will not read any burnt DVD's (data, movies,etc.). It will read burnt CD's, music CD's and "Studio" Movie DVD's, it will even read and recognize blank DVD's and allow me to burn but if I eject the disk after burning it will not mount. All of the disks I have tried were burnt by this drive and used to work at one point or another. I have also tried a disk created on a friends Mac and it still doesn't work. Seems that the drive will do everything but read burnt DVD's. Anyone else encounter this problem? Solutions?
    Thanks,
    J.

I just burned some DVD+R DL and had no problems burning or reading. The System Profiler shows the DVDs that it can handle. My list under Disc Burning is: DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL. Under <Reads DVD> all it says it <Yes>. I think that's a little succinct. But, because it can burn +R DL, it must be safe to assume that it can also read them. I used Disk Utility and made disk images. (Great little guys.) The media was Memorex. Ray

  • Playing burnt DVDs

I've been reading in the forums that burnt DVDs cannot be read on the Macbook. So does that mean that if you burn a DVD (or cd) using the MB superdrive you can't play it on the notebook itself? That's seems weird!

Only certain burnt DVDs cannot be played on the Macbook. For example, The DVDs burnt from my PC cannot be read by the macbook, but i can play all other burnt DVDs, either borrowed from my friends, family etc. Having that said, CDs/DVDs burnt from your macbook will be fine. Hope this helps

  • Avi format burnt dvd's

hi there guys please help i desperately need it.
i recently acquired loads of burnt dvds of my mate and there all avi's and ive tried to rip them of handbrake but it doesnt recognise the cd.
is there anything that i can do?...do i need to convert the avi format?...please help.

if they're AVI just open the disc in finder and drag them to where you want them. you should be able to watch them, sometimes AVI's won't play correctly so you would have to get the DIVX codec if that is the case.

  • Burnt DVD's appearing as blank CD's

    Hi,
New Macpro is reading some DVD's as blank CD's, hence archived material is not available. This problem is consistent on any particular disc yet does not occur to all discs of the same type and burnt on the same (not the Macpro)machine under identical conditions. The offending discs can be read on other machines no problem. Firmware is up to date.
Any suggestions? Anyone else experienced this?
    Thanks,
    Glenn.

    Hi,
    I'm having the same problem.
My Mac Pro is a week old and it won't read Verbatim Double Layer DVD+R discs. I have quite a bit of work that has been backed to these discs that were burned on my old G5 quad.
All i get when i put them in the Mac Pro is a blank disc with "CDR" icon on the desktop.
Strangely, i can access the disc using an imac (also a week old) over the network.
It'd be great to find a solution as its getting a little inconvenient have to access the disc over the network.
    cheers

  • Problem opening Tiger burnt DVD-R in Leopard

    Dear Community,
I have recently upgraded from Tiger to Leopard (10.5.6) on a white MacBook and I'm having trouble with the DVD-R's I've burnt in Tiger. When I insert the DVD-R, the SuperDrive spins round for a bit then stops. No DVD icon appears on the desktop and I'm at a lose. I've been using Sony DVD-R for a while with no problems whatsoever. Any ideas?

Do the DVDs work in any other computers?
Run System Profiler and look at what it says for your optical drive (Disk Burning)
It should show something like this:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J:
    Firmware Revision: FBZ8
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds
You might also reset your PRAM as this sometimes fixes the odd hardware issue.
