Buses and Aux

I'm afraid this reveals my lack of recording understanding but here goes........ working in a 'new' Logic project, there are no 'buses' to start with so I presume you have to create a 'bus' so you send reverb chorus (whatever) to any channel. When you choose 'bus 1' as a 'send' you end up on the mixer with a new 'thing' called 'send 1 (aux 1).' I didn't ask for an aux - but I got one. - Well as you can see I'm totally confused (after recording for 10 years) I have survived this long by using templates. (and thus avoiding the environment)
At the most basic level, what is the difference between a bus, send, return and aux??????

Logic 7 and Logic 8 are very different in this area, and Logic 8 is far easier, IMO.
When you choose 'bus 1' as a 'send' you end up on the mixer with a new 'thing' called 'send 1 (aux 1).' I didn't ask for an aux - but I got one.
That's because Logic 8 wants you to use the new aux object (instead of the old bus object) and helpfully creates one for you when you activate a new bus, either by sending through a bus or routing a channel strip's output to a bus. You can rename the aux so that it shows up in your bus menu by name (reverb, delay, gtr.submix etc instead of Bus 1, Bus 2 etc) The aux object replaces the old bus object as it's more flexible, but the 'old' structure is still available in the environment to preserve compatibility with projects created in earlier Logic versions.
Here are a couple of threads that explain this in greater detail (there are many more -search the forum):

At the most basic level, what is the difference between a bus, send, return and aux??????
Overly simplified:
bus - think of a bus as a pipe that carries an assigned signal. A bit like the wiring in your house.
send - how much signal you want routed through the bus
return - the result of the processing applied to the bus signal routed through an aux
aux - an object that can be used in many different ways, but in this context a destination for the bus and ability to further route and be used by other objects, such as the mix bus. If the bus is your house wiring, the aux can be the wall socket.
Hope this helps.

  • Bus and Aux and Guitar Rig 3

I am a little new to the whole idea of busing. I am getting Guitar Rig 3 and have read where I need to bus the audio to another track, as I record, to get the recorded effect. The track it is plugged into will get only a clean guitar sound recorded, and I need to bus the output to another track to get the effect recorded.
I read the manual and is it just as easy as selecting an output bus for a track and an AUX track just appears?
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks
    RH

Guitar Rig shows up as an audio unit.
    1. Create a new track.
    2. Select that track.
    3. Look at the leftmost column in the Logic window.
    4. Right click on one of the buttons under the text that says "Inserts".
    5. Guitar Rig is found under Audio Units->Native Instruments
Then double click the Guitar Rig button whenever you want to change a Guitar Rig setting. I believe that Logic does record the straight guitar track and applies Guitar Rig and any other effects on the fly.

  • How to display aux bus and Output 1-2 as tracks in arrange?

Sorry for the silly question but I would like to display the auxiliary busses and Out 1-2 as "tracks" in the Arrange view. They show in the Mixer as channel strips and, of course, they're in the Arrange Inspector but I would like to be able to see all my Busses and final Out at the same time. I've gone through the manual to no avail so it must be something really simple I'm missing. Can someone help me out?
    Thanks.

Simplest method is to click on the 'Mixer' tab in your main arrange page. That should bring up the track mixer, then in the mixer tab's "Options" menu you'll find "create arrange tracks for selected channel strips".
Another method, which I'm actually kinda unhappy about, is that if you create any automation for a bus or aux chananel, it automatically creates an arrange track for the bus/aux. Doesn't seem like such a bad idea in itself, except that it totally messes with your track mixer display order. For example, I have all my subgroup bus strips together in my track mixer. But if I create some automation for one of'em, like the vocal bus for example, suddenly it's track strip jumps to somewhere else in the mixer. The only way I can keep bus tracks together is to create 'dummy' automation for all of'em - which is what I have to do.
I wish you could manually move the strips in the track mixer around to your preferred order, and choose to 'de-link' them from the arrange view. I've submitted this already to Apple's Black Hole. I mean, the 'Feedback' page...

  • Groups and Auxs - confused Newbie

Can someone please explain the difference between a group and a bus.
Case: I want to group my drum tracks to a group to apply automation etc. If I create the group in the mixer, select each drum track and say t's art of the groupdo I still need to apply a 'send' in each track inspector to the aux/bus of the same number as teh group?
I'm sure this is a Doh! moment for many but despite reading three manuals I can't understand the logic (no pun).
    Thanks

Older versions of Logic (up to 7?) had "Bus Channels" - if you have an older project or template, you will have these objects. If you are in version 8 or 9, creating a new file from scratch which will not have these objects.
An auxiliary is a CHANNEL and a bus is a PATH.
This is the way it should have been implemented from the beginning, but it wasn't so the confusion spread. A bus is any circuit accepts input from multiple sources. Other than the channels, most everything on an analog mixer is a bus; the main stereo mix, the submasters, the auxes, the matrix, etc.
Think of a bus as a virtual wire. It can be tapped into for a variety of things, from aux sources to compressor side chains. Once you put a signal on a bus in Logic (usually through an aux send) that signal can be used in multiple ways, by multiple objects.
The auxiliaries can be used for effects or for subgrouping. They are channels with faders and inserts. On hardware mixers, the auxiliary 'channels' are usually little more than level knobs for input and output. Obviously, larger consoles have much greater flexibility in this regard.
In Logic 8 and 9, you can create a bus "object" in the environment. I wouldn't touch this, BUT IF YOU DO, the cool thing is that you can get at the signal on the bus and effect it - if you want to.
For example, say you had a snare on track 1, and used an aux send (at unity) which sent its signal over bus 1 to auxiliary 1. If you created a 'bus object' in the environment and pulled down the faer by -6dB, the auxiliary will get a signal that is 6dB down from unity.
An auxiliary is a channel, a bus is a path (except for that crazy 'bus object')

  • Stero bus or aux for parallel compresion

Hi. Trying to do a simple parallel compression on a kit but for some reason I can't get my bus or aux to be stereo. There seems to be no phase problem so doing a bounce then put on stereo audio track is not an issue. I have unselected "universal track mode" which did give me stereo bus outs on tracks but my other tracks Guitar / Bass ect were knocked out and the Aux channel was still in mono. What am I doing wrong. Cause when I put a reverb on an aux it comes as stereo. Any help please......

I use motu's 896 hd, worked out why my mono tracks were knocked out that was just an output setting. But still with my bus set to out 1-2 ect the input on my aux track is mono.....

  • New logic user, need help with multi-channel inst and aux strips.

    Greetings all,
So I just purchased a new Mac Pro 2.66 and Logic Pro 7 to run with it. I have been a long time Nuendo/Cubase user on the PC side of things but since I got the Mac I wanted a DAW that was supported fully for the apple platform.
Anyways, its a world of difference and I am very confused as I wrap my head around the learning curve, so in the meantime I have one important question maybe some one could help me with.
The question is regarding Aux channel stips for Multi channel instruments. In this scenario I am working with Battery 3, it took me a while to understand that I actually needed to create these aux channels just to have seperate outs in Battery which seems really wierd and overly time consuming.
As an example in Nuendo once you create the instance of Battery, the audio mixer automatically just creates the corresponding stereo and mono channels instantly. This obviously makes is a sinch to assign Batteries pads to seperate outs for eq/comps for seperate sounds.
Now the Battery manual doesnt even make a reference to Aux channels for assigning outs in Logic, I actually had to do a Google search to figure this out.
    Anways, sorry for rambling...
Here is the main issue.... How can I quickly and easily create multiple Aux's? In the mixer there is really only enough room in there to add like 1 more Aux strip, if I want to add more than that I need to re-arrange the entire global mixer which seems like a crazy system, surely there must be a more convenient method for getting muti-channel audio instruments set up quicker.
Any help you can assist with would be exceptional!
    Thanks in advance.

Not sure what exactly your question is, especially since I don't use battery. But as far as creating aux tracks:
    • go to the audio layer of the environment (not the track mixer window), find the two defalt aux tracks
    • Highlight all tracks to the right of the aux tracks (these should be bus and output tracks), and drag to the right far enough to fit in a bunch of aux tracks; you might even want to drag the all underneath the aux tracks, if your screen accomodates
    • use the key command shift-command-a multiples times to create several new "audio objects", and double click each one to expand
    • highlight all the new objects and select options/clean up/ align objects (makes it look nicer)
    • still highlighted, over in the parameters section (left side) select a channel, setting it to the highest number aux (at this point, probably "aux 3")
    • now individual set the channel for each aux track – you'll see that now you have available "aux 4"; next time you set a successive track you'll see "aux 5" and so on
    • once you've got things set up the way you want, save it as a template so you don't have to do this again later

  • I am trying to use Labview and RP1210 compliant hardware to connect to a truck J1939 bus and receive messages.

I am trying to use Labview and RP1210 compliant hardware to connect to a truck J1939 bus and receive messages.
Specifically I am attempting  to read data frames using the RP1210_READMESSAGE .   am able to configure the hardware and send a message to the J1939 bus. .    I think I have not configured something correctly.  I can use the RP1210_SENDMESSAGE and see the message I have sent on the bus using CANalyzer   When I use the RP1210_READMESSAGE   I get the timestamp from a message and the return from the function sends back the correct number of bytes (the number matches the number of bytes I sent out plus four bytes from the timestamp).  What I am having trouble with is actually receiving the data. I have had the same type of behavior from two different hardware (Vector CANcase XL and Nexiq USB Link), so I don't think the issue is vendor specific.
Has anyone been able to make the RP1210_RECIEVEMESSAGE function work correctly?
    Thanks for any help

    Thanks
I have already tried that.  The links are the NI RP1210 wraper. The problem I am having is using labview to interface with the RP1210 layer.  The RecieveMessage char*fpchAPIMessage this is the output which is a pointer to a cahracter array.  In this variable I can receive the timestamp of the message but not the message.  The retun showns the correct amount of bytes are aviaable (18 for a 8 byte message) but I can only get the 4 byte timestamp  I think I have to dereference this pointer to view the data.  I am not sure how to fix this.

  • PCI bus and memory ranges in Device Manager.

    Hello,
I looked in device manager on my netbook that has no dedicated graphics card (so no dedicated VRAM) and uses shared system RAM as
it’s video buffer, the following memory ranges have been assigned to the on board card -
If I then change the view in device manager to ‘Resources by type’, Windows shows the following memory ranges to be on the PCI bus
Basically all the memory ranges that have been assigned to the card are shown to be also on the PCI bus. I would understand this with
a dedicated graphics card where data needs to be forwarded onto the PCI bus but I know my netbook is using system memory as the frame buffer which then I assume the card reads from there.
Do you know why these addresses are shown to be on the PCI bus, is it just because the card is a PCI device so it’s easier for Windows
just to display them as if they were on that bus, and anything written to these address will still go into system memory?
I know it’s a bit of a random question but I’ve been trying to find an answer online and can’t seem to find anything.
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Thanks.

    Yes.
You can check the hardware memory usage via Resource Monitor.

  • Faster bus and bigger cache in the 3.0 GHz?

In Bare Feats test (http://www.barefeats.com/quad06.html) of the Mac Pro 3.0 they say "The 3.0GHz Mac Pro's 20% faster clock speed, larger L2 cache, and faster system bus enables it to muscle through these two non-optimized apps."
Hopefully I'm misreading this as they seem to know what they're talking about.
For me, if the clock speed is the only thing that is different then it's not worth the $800. Bus and cache too? That could be a different story.
Could someone please confirm that the bus and L2 Cache are the same for the 2.66 and the 3.0 before I get buyer's remorse (yes, I haven't even got my MP yet) and wish I went for the 3.0 over the 2.66?
Mac Pro 2.66 soon   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    They are the same.

  • AquaLogic Service Bus and XQuery Mapper

    Hi all,
I'm new about using AquaLogic Service Bus and XQuery Mapper. I'm using alsb250_wls920.
To understand better the details I've developed two very simple EJBs stateless related to a generic CarRental scenario.
    The idea is the following:
    - EJB1 exposes a method for retrieving available cars from company A
    - EJB2 exposes a method for retrieving available cars from company B
The method signature is the same:
public CarVO[] getAvailableCars(Category category, Double price)
the only difference is about the CarVO definition where one exposes more attributes than the second one (and also the package is different).
The goal is designing a new proxy service called getAvailableCars that calls the two above services and returns a set including all available cars from both companies.
The returned CarVO is the sum of all attributes from two above CarVOs plus a string company attribute.
    So in AquaLogic I've defined:
    - a JAR resource for importing my CarRental.jar
    - two BusinessService resources related to the two above getAvailableCars services (from company A & B), called getAVISAvailableCars & getHertzAvailableCars;
    - I've exported the two WSDLs from the two above BusinessService resources directly from AquaLogic console;
    - I've written manually the WSDL 'getAvailableCars' that I use in the next proxy service definition
    - a getAvailableCars_1 proxy service resource
Before completing the proxy service definition, I've decided to use XQuery Mapper for defining my trasformations.
But I got some errors when I try to import the WSDLs.
For importing simply I've created a wsdl folder inside my project and copied into it the 3 WSDLs definitions.
Because there are errors in 2 of these WSDLs (getHertzAvailableCars.wsdl, getAvisAvailableCars.wsdl) when I create a XQuery Transformation, I'm not able to select any source schema.
But getHertzAvailableCars.wsdl, getAvisAvailableCars.wsdl have been generated directly from AquaLogic console and I don't understand why XQuery Mapper complains about them.
If needed I can post also the CarRental.zip eclipse prj (that contains the above two EJBs) and CarRentalAqualogicPrj.jar AquaLogic prj (passphrase is aqualogic).
I thank you in advance for any suggestion.
    Regards
    Patrizio

Could you send me the WSDLS?

  • Help, i lost my ipod touch 4th gen on the bus. and i am wondering if apple would cover this on insurance?

so i lost it on the bus and i know someone will take it because of the place i live in. what would be the best option to do been as i have already phoned the bus company.

Apple does not provide insurance for lost iPods. Unless you had insurance from some other source - such as a credit card plan that covers such losses, or homeowner's insurance, or a separate policy, you'll have to buy a new iPod from your own funds.
If you set up the Find My iPod service prior to the iPod going missing, then there is a chance that can be tracked, though it depends on a number of factors (the iPod is turned on, connected to a WiFi network, and has not had the Find My iPod service disabled or the iPod been completely restored). You can then give that tracking information to the police, though it's highly doubtful they'll take any action.
If you did not set up Find My iPod, then there is no way to track it. Contact the police just in case some honest citizen turns the iPod in, and change any passwords for any online accounts you may have used from your iPod (the iTunes Store, for instance).
    Regards.
