Buses seem to be off with Motu 828

I just recently switched to Mac from a PC using Cubase. I'm using Logic now and I like the ease of the program. However one thing is driving me crazy. When I create an audio track and I set up the input to record for some reason the buses seem to be off by a pair. For instance if I set up a stereo track to record from input 1-2, I don't get a signal till I raise up bus 3-4 Then 3-4 responds to 4-5 and so on. I checked my wiring and configurations but I can't seem to figure it out. What am I missing out on? I could work around this but it's nagging the heck out of me. Any info on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

It's difficult to be sure without doing some network packet sniffing, but if it were another app syncing, it would be an awful coincidence, since it seems to happen only while I'm in Reminders.app -- as soon as I click the home button and go back to the home screen, it stops; when I launch Reminders again, it starts again.
Moreover, it happens when I am not in the house, which rules out iTunes syncing.
Note that it's not the syncing spinner (i.e. two arrows chasing each other in a circle) -- it's the data access spinner (like the wait spinner in many apps and the apple.com search box).

  • Logic Pro 7 with MOTU 828 or Apogee Ensemble??

I've been using Logic with MOTU's 828MKII interface for about 4 years now. Since couple of days go, the 828 keeps freezing. I had to turn unit off and turn it back on and it starts to work again, but freezes again couple seconds later. I've talked to MOTU guys and they told me to switch voltage back and forth and try again. Same thing.
I finally came to 2 option.
    1. Send the unit to MOTU and get it fixed and hope to work with it without anymore problem in the future.
    2. Get the new MOTU 828MKIII
    3. Get Apogee's Ensemble audio interface. (this one is really pricey for me)
    What do you guys think?
Should I just get 828MKii fixed or try new gears..?
    I'm a starting film/TV composer/producer and beginning to
    do quite large projects.
    My set up is
-G5 Quad PowerPC with 2.5GB RAM
-250GB main hardrive, 500GB second internal hardrive
    -Yamaha HS50M Speaker
    -Yamaha S90ES Synthesizer
    -Apple Cinema 23inch
-Running Logic Pro 7 with bunch of samples
and plug-ins in my second internal hard drive.
    Share your opinions please.
    Thanks
    Chris

Motu use to make one of the most reliable drivers in industry. If you're happy with it and can get it fixed... so why not stick with it for a while?
On the other hand the new Apogee's software seems to be really solid and Ensemble's converters are much better than MKII.
So get the 828 fixed, stick with it for a while, save some cash, buy the Ensemble, dump the old 828.
    Hope that helps

  • Logic losing contact with MOTU 828 (Mk I)

Ever since installing Logic 7.1, Once or twice a session, Logic stops talking to my Motu 828 (Mk I). I'll be playing something back, or getting ready to record, and the Motu just goes quiet - no signal indicators. If I restart the Motu, the sound comes back, so not the biggest problem in the world, but sure is annoying. I've gotten rid of, then re-installed the Motu drivers, and that doesn't seem to help.
There have been a few posts about new 828s dropping out, but nothing as intermittent as this. Any ideas?
    Dual 1.25 G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Logic 7.1 MOTU 828 Mk I

I had this problem with my Motu 828 (mk I) and my previous Imac G4 (700 mhz). Sometimes it could dropout 3-4 times during a session, sometimes it did not happen for several weeks. Buying a new firewirecable instead of the one Motu supplied made the problem be less frequent.
I came to the conclusion that it was probably a defect firewireconnection on my Imac G4.
Since I bought my new Imac G5 in november the dropouts has disappered.
Suggestion: test your 828 with another mac to see if the problems go away.

  • Logic X audiodropout with MOTU 828 X

    Machine: Macbook Pro 2,5 GHz i7, 16GB Ram, 512Gb SSD. Oktober 2014
    Software LOGIC X
    System: Mavericks, Yosemite
    Hardware: MOTU 828 X, MOTU 8pre USB
    Kabel: Thunderbolt, USB
Hi, I'm experiencing audio dropout when running the setup listed above. The dropout is not reproducible - sometimes the system runs for hours without a single dropout - then again sometimes I get dropout every 5 seconds.
    - before replacing my 2009 Macbook with the 2014 Macbook I connected the same MOTU hardware via USB running OS X 10.8 and everything was perfect.
    - Then I upgraded to OSX 10.9 and audio dropout started happing.
    - I changed to the brand-new 2014 Macbook. Same problem
    - I upgraded the new Macbook to OS X 10,10. Same problem
    - On the MOTU Interfaces the firmware is the latest version 1.04 and the audio driver is the latest version dating 17. October 2014
    - Even with older drivers and firmware always the same problem.
    - No fusion drive on my Mac
    - very occasionally the dropout problem even occurs when using the the onboard sound hardware while using Logic X
Since the audio dropout problem occurred on 2 different MacBooks and only started when I upgraded from OS X 10.8 to 10.9 I guess it is a:
    1. MOTU driver / firmware problem
    2. LOGIC X problem
    3. OSX problem
Since I need my Mac for professional audio work I  really need a solution to this problem. Even MOTU / Germany has no clue.

    Hi Sascha..
    I remember you.
If you have Firefox running that's another CPU hog that can cause dropouts.
I stuck with Snow Leopard and Logic 9, great combination, there will be no further Mac purchases or upgrades for me.
Also still have my quad-core 3.0gHz PC which runs Cubase 6 very well, it keeps me compatible with the University/PBS machines running Nuendo.

  • Logic 9 issue with original motu 828 and Snow 10.6.2 on a new imac 21.5in

Original Motu 828 and Imac Snow 10.6.2 os. What do i do to get this motu to work with Snow on the new iMac 21.5in model. I downloaded drivers from Motu which i get crashes. I heard some people are having no problem while others like myself having problem.
So to those who has this type of setup how did u do it.
I uninstall driver because of crash issues. I also trash the prefs but no go.
without the driver motu 828 doesn't crash when plugged in firewire port using cord fw 400 to fw 800 but system prefs and logic doesn't see the motu.
Has Motu stop supporting Snow to work with the original motu 828 and Why doesnt motu answer their phone.
I dont think i will ever buy a motu product if their phone is always busy. Dang... Cant even leave a message with motu by phone and i need my system to running.

My Mac Pro crashes all day since i updated or installed the Motu card.
    I have qty 3, Motu 24/IO's, and 1 828mk3 and 1 896 mk3.
I updated to snow and then downloaded and installed motu's drivers and my Mac crashes all day long.
Left Support ticket on MOTU site and they are so lame they can
't even answer a support ticket let alone answer the phone.
I am hostage to a bad sompnay!. I own the PCIe 424 and all the 24/io's etc.
Is there another company that makes 1 card that will support 80 inputs of 96kz audio? I sure need one that only takes up one PciE slot!!!
Also if you have Ethno instruments it will crash your mac.
Is ther a script or master un-installer so you can remove all of Motu drivers/
Also try opening your console, and watching...it looks for a fw/usb device that is not recognized anymore. Guess MOTU wrote some good dirty code again that causes havoc on the buss!.
ANy ideas on another audio system that is snow lepord campatible?

The machine could be repaired by a company that does circuit board re-soldering, since it is possible a heat-flex solder break on the main board may have caused either the processor or graphics chips to lose connection and that could manifest itself in a few somewhat documented ways.
There is an on-board RAM chip that may also have something to do with a kernel panic, if it no longer is functioning correctly; that is the non-removable one soldered on the board you never usually worry about.
Companies such as powerbookmedic, wegenermedia, and others can take in portable macs of vintage or newer (contact them for details on what they do, and how they accept work orders) for repair and can fix most anything; and have a parts inventory. Modern repair workstations allow the equipped service company to fix complex issues and they do troubleshooting. Sometimes the cost is less than a replacement logic board.
The links above may help isolate the general cause of a kernel panic. There are other articles in Support database including a deeper look into them.

Usually the issue is caused by hardware, especially if there is an indication of machine failure in the crash log or other screen image text.
A working last model MacBook (mid-2010) would be a better 'first mac' to have.
Hopefully you can sort it out.
If not, there likely are fair parts in it.

  • MOTU 828 mk ll not being recognized by Windows XP in Bootcamp

    Hi All,
I have been pulling my hair out over this - and believe me I don't have much to spare! I cannot seem to get Windows to see my MOTU 828 mk ll audio interface.
I have Boot Camp installed with Windows XP service pack 2, updated to service pack 3. I ran the snow leopard driver installers again after I did the service pack 3 upgrade. I've installed and uninstalled the MOTU firewire/USB driver package over and over again, and rebooted ad nauseum, all without success.
I then tried upgrading the firewire drivers to the AVT FirePackage, thinking they might be more robust than Microsoft's. Reinstalled the MOTY drivers, etc - no change. Needless to say, the 828 mk ll runs perfectly under OS X, so I know there's nothing wrong with the unit, cables, or FW port on my tower.
Any ideas or insights would be greatly appreciated.
    Eli

    Hi Eli,
i´m actually facing the same problems using a traveler, no problems on OS 10.6 no detection on WIN XP.
I contacted Motu Tech links and Matthew a service technican wrote me that,
    Hi Michael,
There is a setting in the Windows registry that controls the data rate between the FireWire adapter and connected devices. Adjusting this setting might resolve the problem you're experiencing. Please follow these steps to adjust this value in the Windows registry. Make sure to power off your Traveler before hand.
    1. In the Start menu, choose Control Panel > System > Hardware. Click the Device Manager button.
    2. In the Device Manager, expand the section titled IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers. Right-click on the FireWire adapter device to which the audio interface is connected, and choose Properties.
    3. In the Properties window, select the Details tab. In the Property dropdown menu, select Device Instance ID.
    4. In the Value field, you will see a string of letters and numbers that is similar to the following:
    PCI\VEN104C&DEV_8020&SUBSYS_00D81028&REV00\4&19FD8D60&0&60F0
The second and third parts of this string are significant. The portion of the string between the two backslashes (\) is the hardware ID for the FireWire adapter. The portion of the string following the final backslash is the instance ID. Keep the Properties window open or save these values.
    5. In the Start menu, choose Run. Type regedit at the command prompt. Press return to launch the Registry Editor.
    6. In the Registry Editor, navigate to this registry subkey using the folder hierarchy at the left side of the window:
    HKEYLOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetEnumPCIhardware_IDinstanceID
The hardware_ID and instance_ID are the values from step 4 (Device Manager > FireWire adapter properties > Details > Device Instance ID).
    7. When you have reached this subkey, select Device Parameters. In the right side of the window, you may see one or more defined values. If you see a value named SidSpeed, continue to step 8. If the SidSpeed value does not exist in the right pane after you click the Device Parameters subkey, you will need to create it. To do this, open the Edit menu and choose New > DWORD Value. Type SidSpeed for the value's name, and then press return.
    8. Right-click on SidSpeed, and select Modify. In the value data field, enter 3, and then click OK.
    9. Close the Registry Editor program, and then restart the computer. After the computer has restarted, log in to Windows and test the problem again.
    Hope this will do,
    greetings, Michael

  • Firewire disconnects using motu 828 mkii and Mackie ONYX 1620i. Why?

Having replaced my trusted MOTU 828 mkii as it kept disconnecting itself and needed rebooting including removal and replacement of the firewire lead, I have encounted the very same problem with the Mackie ONYX 1620i.
Interestingly it happened recently when I powered up a guitar amp in the same room the other day so I called my electrician friend to check out all the power outlets/sockets on the studio main. His comments were "no issues".
    - As there are no other gemlins associated to the power I put it down as coincidence but had to rule it out.
I have tried a multiple of firewire leads and had the same results.
The only firewire device that seems ok is a Behringer FCA 202!!!! (Embarrasing!) - I use this for stereo output only (to the same active monitors) and swap FW lead and Output Jacks when using each device.
This is with Macbook Pro (2010), Logic Studio 9, iTunes, etc. (all purchased products and same problem with ALL audio software).
Using Lion but was an issue with previous OSX.
    Certainly a head scratcher.
    Anyone had any similar issues?

    That's interesting. Thanks Benjy.
Please be sure to update here if you do encounter anything similar.
I cannot afford to replace my 'live' desk as well as another soundcard.
Plus, I really don't think I should have to - Mackie and MOTU are established and reputable device manufacturers and this seems to be an Apple issue.
    Apple?
Anyone else sncountered similar and found a resolution after advice from apple?

  • Latency recording live keyboard through MOTU 828

I am getting some latency playing a Korg SG1 Sampling Grand live in stereo into a MOTU 828 connected by Firewire to a G4 powerbook - not many tracks of audio running.
The monitor mix out of the MOTU and into a modest desk with headphones has a slight latency during recording.
Apart from plugging a pair of headphones directly into the MOTU what general advice would anyone have for reducing latency in Logic? Are there any settings etc I should change?
    many thanks in advance

If you need to get Live recording in Logic with 828 and software monitoring active look the following settings:
I advice you to don't use compressors on the Buss in the live recording phase and set PDC to
This allow you to use Logic compressors and EQ on the channel inserts without adding latency. (and , off course, any Virtual instruments)
With PDC set to "all" you must use the Logic 8 "Low Latency Mode"! (I still prefer to avoid the PDC set to "All" in Live MIDI recording phase.)
You can also try to reduce the Sample buffer to 128... (but the CPU-power request should be too much for your G4).
You can also set software monitoring to OFF and use the Motu with its zero latency monitoring...
In order to use Virtual Synth you must use software monitoring... the 256k buffer is very fast with my Motu 828MKII and it works great... remember just to don't use PDC set to ALL!
    PS:
    Are you on 828 MK2?
I'm waiting for the new MK3 because it is a great interface for Live recording because inclde Compressors Reverbs and EQ that can be used indipendently from software monitoring of your DAW.... (my opinion, it is the best interface that you can buy at this time... higest top professional quality with a killer price )

  • How to install MOTU 828 drivers in Lion?

I'm trying to use my Motu 828 with my iMac, OS 10.7.2 --
When I run the installer (downloaded from MOTU, dated
    2011/08/09
    I get this error:
I assume this is a permissions error on some folder and I've seen some advice on the net about how to chmod the permissions.  But I'm reluctant to do that until I know what I'm doing, so as not to open up security issues.  Should it be set back?  To what chmod?
What's the official right way to install these kind of drivers in Lion?
    Thanks

Ach, never mind -- I think I got it -- redid the entire thing and responded to the challenge prompt from Lion and seems good to go.

  • MOTU 828 mk II & I/O mixing 5.1 surround & stereo

    Hello all
Is anyone aware of a link for implimentation of MOTU 828 mkII I/O's using Logic 9? The 828 mkII manual doesn't make mention of how to assign Logic Inputs or Outputs in relation to the MOTU channels.
I'm setting up a MOTU 828 Firewire Mk II after my Mk I just went down.  The Mk I  input & output channels seemed so obvious to set up in Logic I/O prefs ..... 5.1 surround came out of Logic Audio Channel Outputs 1-6  then via the Firewire went into the 828 mk 1 and out of the corresponding channels   .... and ordinary stereo came out of Logic via channels 1 & 2 into 1 & 2 of the 828 mk 1..... monitoring and bouncing was simple and obvious.
However I can't sort out a basic output routing in the 828 mk 2 for what should be straight forward?
PLEASE CAN ANYONE POINT ME TO AN AUDIO ROUTING SET UP FOR USING LOGIC WITH SURROUND & STANDARD STEREO WITH A MOTU 828 mk 2 ...... IT SEEMS LIKE KINDERGARTEN STUFF BUT I CAN'T FIND ANY INFO ANYWHERE?
I've got a happy surround mix coming out of all six Logic channels and playing back out of the 828 analogue outs with Logic Prefs I/O Assignments like this:
    Basic - 5.1 (ITU 775)
    Left OUTPUT 3
    Right OUTPUT 4
    L surround OUTPUT 5
    R surround OUTPUT 6
    Centre OUTPUT 7
    LFE OUTPUT 8
However I haven't tried a 5.1 bounce yet as am not sure what on earth ends up in the resulting 6 audio files (SO confusing !)
My Mac OSX stereo sound is playing out of the 828 by choosing OSX System Prefs Sound - "MOTU 828" ... but the idea of choosing Outputs 3 & 4 to bounce a standard stereo audio file out of Logic seems totally nuts.
However ... I don't seem to be able to bounce a standard stereo mix ? (even though I can hear it playback in the L & R monitors of my 5.1 studio monitors ...... the resulting sound fle has no sound in it (either WAV or MP3?)
Please can any one help !!!??  I got my knickers in a major twist?
Is there a Logic Channel Re- Routing guide somewhere for using both 5.1 & stereo with a 828mk2 without the necessaity to change standard stereo Logic outputs to 3 & 4?
    Best wishes
    Richard

GUYS - THIS IS THE SILLY SIMPLE FIX ......
Keep everything routed in Logic outputs as normal:-
    L - 1
    R - 2
    Ls -3
    Rs -4
    C - 5
    LFE - 6
So bounce everything as normal including standard stereo outs.
    Make the MOTU audio setup:-
DEFAULT STEREO OUTPUT - MAIN OUT 1-2
    Take the 828 mk2 outputs to your surround monitors;
L comes out of MAIN OUT 1
R comes out of MAIN OUT 2
Ls comes out of ANALOGUE OUT 1
Rs comes out of ANALOGUE OUT 2
C comes out of ANALOGUE OUT 3
LFE comes out of ANALOGUE OUT 4
DONE ....... you can carry on as if nothing happened!
Thanks for looking at this ..... sorry for being a nincompoop !
    Best
    Richard
PS NOT GOOD MOTU - this info isn't anywhere to be found  - just my trial and error

  • Logic Pro 9 & Motu 828 interface problem ?

Hi all. I am running Logic Pro 9 on my iMac with a Motu 828 mk2 audio interface connected by firewire. It used to work fine with logic but strangely i now have a problem.
It works fine with iTunes music and listening to sounds/mp3s etc from my desktop but as soon as i boot up logic pro and try to work on a project the only sound output i get is very high pitched noises and large gaps between these noises. It wont play any sounds at all through pro even samples via the browser.
Can anyone help or explain what maybe wrong? i havent a clue whats happened!
Thanks in advance for any help

Paul, sounds like the MOTU needs a reset.
    - Unplug the firewire
    - press the button "setup", turn full
    - right until "factory default"
    - push select
    - confirm with "value"
    - Power Off the Interface
    - Power On The Interface
    - Reboot The Mac - Let it settle
    - Plug the Firewire Back In
Did you do an OS upgrade with the MOTU plugged In, any time you do an OS upgrade, even if it's just an incremental one (10.8.3 to 10.8.4) unplug the MOTU, some garbage is usually sent out the firewire port during an OS upgrade.

  • Motu 828 MKIII firewire connection problem

    Hello !
I am a Belgian user (sorry for my english) of the Motu 828 MKIII Firewire, when I was on Windows evreythings gone ok, but  I have a big problem since I switched to Mac !
When I plug my motu with a 6pin-9pin firewire cable to my macBook pro « mid 2012 » it is not always recognized by the drivers.
Sometimes it is recognized, but if I disconnect and then reconnect it no longer works.
It does not appear in the "Motu audio setup". In the "Report System » of mac, it detects an "unknown device".
I tried another cable but it does not change, yet my firewire port works well (I tried with an extern HardDrive) !!
I also tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers, it does not change!
The firmware is 1.06, the drivers is 1.6 58373 and I’m running OSX 10.9 (mavericks).
There’s no new drivers on website...
    Please help me !

You can select which physical outputs Logic designates as your "Stereo Output" in Audio Preferences->IO Assignments. Unfortunately you cannot rename the IO label for Output 1-2 - this is permanently greyed out.
Note also that Logic that Logic has some buggy routing behavior around Output 1-2 as it assumes this is your main stereo output pair. If you want to use outputs 1 and 2 as mono outputs you will run into all sorts of trouble.
@the blind eye - you have a secondary issue in that the "Main" outputs of your MOTU are actually the mix bus of the interface itself, these are not outputs that are directly accessible by Logic.

  • Mac OSX Mavericks 10.9 firewire audio problem on RME Fireface 800, MOTU 828 Mk II and Apogee Duet on late 2013 iMac i7

I just got the late 2013 iMac 3.5GHz Intel Core i7 and all my firewire based audio interfaces do not work properly although I upgraded to the latest drivers. iTunes or Youtube can play for a short and then there are unbrearable digital noises.
Apogee Duet is slightly better that can play for a few minutes. Then it may have short pause or digital noises. I need to reset the "Sample Rate" to other values to get it work again.
MOTU 828 mk II and RME Fireface 800 are having the most serious problems. Alternating the sample rate can sometimes help but often I need to reboot the iMac to get it work again. However, it works for only 1-2 minutes before the digital noises.
These are the software/drivers I installed:
    - Apogee Maestro 2 version 2.8.8
    - MOTU Universal Audio Installer for Mac OS X version 1.6.58373 (8/20/2013)
    - RME version 3.19, firmware 2.77
I connect the fireware through Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire convertor.
These drivers are supposed to work with 10.9 but they don't. Anyone can help or share experience?

I've read in other forums that there are two issues that is causing this problem of chopping audio and freezing interfaces.  One has to do with USB 2.0 /USB 3.0 issues in OS.  The other seems to be an issue with the Fusion drive.
The fix for the fusion drive issue that has been shared online is to either:
Option #1.  Don't use the fusion drive and create an external boot drive clone (either SSD or standard HD) and use as your primary drive (completely surpassing the internal fusion drive).
Option #2.  Split the internal fusion drive.  From there you can use them as two separate logical drives.  Load your OS on one of the drives (SSD or HD).   http://www.macworld.com/article/2015664/how-to-split-up-a-fusion-drive.html
Before, you do any of the above, make sure that you backup your current system setup.
I just received my imac (2013) with 3TB fusion and I plan on trying option #1.  I bought a 3TB external USB drive which I plan to clone after I have the machine running.  Once I clone the internal drive, I will test how the machine runs from both the internal fusion and the external to prove if this addresses the audio clipping/stopping problem.  Hopefully, Apple will find a fix for this.
It is really a dissapointment that a brand new $2500+ machine and software was not tested to perform something that my 2008 MacBookPro and my home built Window XT machine (circa 2003) did without issue.  I wished that I would have checked the forums about these issues before I purchased the machine.
You can do some searches online and find even more detail discussions on this topic.
