Business Intelligence and Manufacturing

We are currently working on a project to identify how Business intelligence technologies can help manufacturing operations. In other words how can companies make use of their manufacturing data to make better operational decisions.
Have any of you worked on a similar project before? Any input would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • About Business Intelligence and Business Warehouse.

    Greetings Gentilemen,,
I'm currently working as an ABAP Consultant, but i want to get information about Business Intelligence and Business Warehouse because I want to pursue my career as a functional consultant.
What do i need to study and do i have to get access to BW system to do some self studying ?!
    TIA

    Hi
You're on the right track. The Oracle 11g database does indeed come with OWB. Out of the box, OWB can and will work with OLAP. However, are you licensed for OLAP? That is an add-on to the standard Oracle database license and, if I'm not mistaken, a separate install option too. I'm not 100% certain but I don't think the base Oracle database installer gives you the OLAP objects, I think you have to choose the custom install. Please make sure you buy the right license though.
As for ad-hoc querying and reporting, Discoverer will do you just fine. It is very reasonably priced and, as you say, it is part of the Oracle BI Standard Edition.
BI Enterprise Edition is the top of the range Oracle model for BI. It can do the same as Discoverer plus some - at a price! Personally, if you only want to work with some ad-hoc queries I would start out with Discoverer as it is the easiest to install and learn. Its also the cheapest entry point into the BI world. Later, if you decide that Discoverer is not for you then you can pay the BI EE license fee and upgrade. Oracle will even have tools that will allow you to upgrade your metadata and existing reports. Therefore, don't think that by starting out with Discoverer that you will be locking yourself into that tool because you will not.
    Best wishes
    Michael

I can't find workflow module in it.
Do I need to plugin workflow module in my Oracle9iAS?

  • Business Intelligence and Analysis capabilities on XML content

On page 99 of Oracle XML DB Basic Demonstration pdf doc it si said: "Even though Business Intelligence, such as rollup and cube, are not XML aware they are able to process XML content exposed through a relational view"
is this true ? if so, how can i create a cube and/or
dimension from XML content exposed through a relational view ?
Unfortunately, Oracle 9i does not allow me to build materialzed views from XML content (Oracle objects)
    Thanks in advance,

The intention of the documentation maybe that anything you can query using SQL, you can expose as XML. For instance, you could create an analytic workspace, expose it through views, query the views through SQL, and return the results as XML.

  • Business Intelligence and performance point problem

    Hi Everyone,
Please does anyone know why creating a dashboard from a Sharepoint list is such a hassle. I have configured performance point services, a secure store and a business intelligent website that has a data connection library and  Performance Point content
list . Unfortunately anytime I try to use dashboard designer to create a new data source and specify the site settings(using unattended account method) I can't save it. It gives me an error claiming that I either don't have permissions or the data source
    doesn't exist.
A search around the web for answers doesn't seems to solve my problem as it suggests that the problem is associate with many things which I'm not clear about. Please could someone who is good at this at least tell me the critical things to check and the
clearest way to set this up.
    Thanks,
    Dominic

    Hi Dominic,
According to your error " I either don't have permissions or the data source doesn't exist", it should be related to the unattended account permission.
Once the unattended service account has been configured, you must grant that account access to your data sources:
For SQL Server data, the account must have a SQL logon with db_datareader permissions on each database that you want to access.
For SQL Server Analysis Services data, the account must have read access to the cube or an appropriate portion of the cube, depending on your needs.
For Excel Services data, the account must have access to the Excel workbook in a SharePoint document library.
For data in a SharePoint list, the account must have read access to the list.

  • Daily Business Intelligence V/s Balanced ScoreBoard

I'm a discoverer developer trying to understand the difference between Daily Business Intelligence and Balanced ScoreBoard. Both of them use KPI's right? I've a vision installation of 11.5.10 and I guess I need to install patch to get DBI as I couldnt find DBI Admin Responsibility in it.

Hi Raj - Nilesh may back me up on this one?
    May be a bit late for you question - However;
If you are commencing a new DBI implementation - always go with the latest patch version - currently version 7.2. This is to avoid issues being resolved by Support - who will inevitably, where DBI is concerned, suggest the latest patchset before commencing on any troubleshooting (particularily for FII and FDHM).
Once you have installed DBI 7.2 and you find you need to create new KPIs, then you do this through DBI Designer - straighforward!
The only issue is in order to utilise this functionality in DBI Designer on 7.2, you will need to patch up for BSC 11i.BSC.J Version 5.3 [(released 21JUL06)  so not available at the commencement of your thread]. Complete 2 Global Setup steps after patching [TIP: Use the old 'Balance Scorecard Manager' responsibility, not the new 'Performance Management Administrator' responsibility as suggested in Cookbooks for DBI Designer to avoid a security issue] - then you can utilise the DBI Designer functionality to 'generated data source' and new KPIs for use in DBI Designer. If you dont do this step and implement BSC then you wont receive the option to generate Data source and create KPIs....

  • On Demand Business Intelligence/Self Service BI tools

    Hello,
I wanted to first understand if "On Demand Business Intelligence" and "Self Service BI" mean the same. If not, what is the difference between the two.
In addition, i would like to know the tools that i could use addressing the above two needs. The tool should have features like charting etc (fancy stuff).., It should be easily integrated with web apps and not too costly.
    Any thoughts
    vinu

    Hi Vinu,
The term 'On-demand BI' is open to interpretation, as are most of these 'buzz-words', but it is commonly accepted as meaning 'BI in the cloud' whereby an organisation can
reap the benefits of a BI infrastructure without being hit by the costs commonly associated with on-premise BI infrastructures. The on-demand BI capability is normally delivered via a subscription based model i.e. Infrastructure as a service
    (IaaS).
Self-service BI relates to empowering subject matter experts or SMEs to convert the data that is available to them into reports, dashboards, and other actionable information products, whilst
reducing their immediate dependence on the IT department (who are often a bottle neck for ad-hoc, time-sensitive, reporting and analysis requirements).
Reports/dashboards created with self-service BI tools often get converted into corporate-wide BI reports/dashboards once their usefulness has been recognised by senior management. Self-service
BI tools such as Power Pivot, Power View, Power Query, and Power Map can be used with on-premise BI, 'BI in the cloud', or both. Even before Power Pivot, and other Power BI products, Excel could be considered a self-service BI tool since it enables
SMEs to create what are effectively 'decision support systems'.
A good example of 'On-demand BI' would be Power BI in office 365, since it allows businesses to have a BI capability without a large capital expenditure that is normally associated with this.
SAP also provide BI On demand.
Good examples of Self-service BI tools that come to mind are the Power BI offerings (Power Pivot, Power View, Power Query, Power Map), Tableau, and Qlikview.
My answer is certainly not definitive and it would be interesting to read how others in this forum interpret 'On Demand BI' and 'Self-service BI'...
    Hope this helps,
    Michael

  • Reports Configuration Error - 9ias Business Intelligence Install

Has anyone gotten a successful install of Business Intelligence and Forms of 9ias? I finally got a clean infrastructure install and a clean patch install. Now, I am trying to do the 9ias business intelligence and forms install. All went smoothly except the Reports Configuration Assistant. I am getting an error when the Assistant tries to execute the rwaddpage.sql. Any ideas?
    Deborah

    Hi!
I believe that this is the way it is.
Usually I see an AS where OCS is added. But there should be not many differences.
There was a 10g version (10.1.1 I think) where you ended up with different OracleHomes for Portal and BI. Except from adding some stuff to your disks the amount of processes will not differ greatly when starting BI from a separate $OH.
Switching off the Enterprise Manager (Application Server Control) will leave you with lots of CPU and Memory resources.
