Business Intelligence in Banking sector - Technical challenges

Hello,
I am interested to know what technical challenges does the BI team face while working on BI project in Banking sector.
Please let me know the various stages in BI project in Banking and the technical challenges at each stage!

Hi Bankole,
I am not sure how much you know about SAP products:  SAP R/3 (the name has undergone some changes, of late) is the product used for day-to-day business transactions.  It is an OLTP system.   SAP BW is another product which can acquire the data in SAP R/3 and other legacy systems and provide analysis of the same from a strategic perspective.  It is an OLAP system.
SAP BW is a very interesting and rewarding career area.  There are opportunities all over the world.
However, to come up to speed quickly, a background in having worked in SAP R/3 as a Business Analyst or as an ABAP Developer for a couple of years would be ideal.
If you like programming, getting into an ABAP developer role initially in a SAP R/3 environment, would be a good start. It is an equally good career area, requiring less business process knowledge to start with.  It would also give you the time to understand the different business processes in an organization as mapped in a SAP R/3 system.
I would not dissuade you from getting trained in BW and seeking a BW career immediately, but then you may face a steeper learning curve and may need to operate with a lot of grey areas around you.
Best of luck!
Mathew.

  • While back up and restoring the business intelligence site collection in sharepoint 2010

    Hi,
i am trying to take backup of business intelligence site collection from one sharepoint server and restoring it to the 2nd sharepoint server, backup and restore successfully completed.i have configured all the performance point services on new server also.
but still i am getting below error:-
An exception occurred while rendering a Web control. The following diagnostic information might help to determine the cause of this problem: Microsoft.PerformancePoint.Scorecards.BpmException: The filter no longer exists or you do not have permission
to view it. PerformancePoint Services error code 20700.
Can anybody suggest me how to resolve these error.
And the dashboard is looking like below:-

    Hey Surbi
I'm facing the same issue, actually restored a backup of the BI site collection into a different web app (on the same server) but get the same errors as you!
Looking into it the connection to the report or filter (whatever artefact it is) needs to be refreshed so technically the report doesn't exist as far as the performance web part is concerned!
However when I re-attached the web part to the filter or report I got a different error... 'This data source no longer exists'
So basically I found I had to re-create the reports and filters etc in Dashboard Designer... to re-create the dashboards. I did one page and don't want to spend months re-doing them!
Anyone come up with a way of preserving the web parts references to performance point items and the items connections to their data source in a restore of a site collection?

  • Survey on best practice Business Intelligence Strategy - Join in

I have created a survey (link below) and will share the results back to this thread.  Many of SAP's customers are focusing on establishing or reenergizing a Business Intelligence strategy and platform.  Many questions arise and we often wonder how others are approaching the challenges.  This is a quick 10 question survey.  If the response is well received, we can have follow-up surveys or polls.  Please take a moment to complete the survey and respond back with other questions we might add to future surveys.
    Thanks.

  • Ph.D. research in Business Intelligence

Working for 5 years in the area of SAP Business Intelligence I am looking for an opportunity to obtain a Ph.D. in this area.
The aim is to be able to continue to work as a free lance senior SAP BI consultant and meanwhile to obtain the Ph.D. and so improving my knwoledge and skillset .
I have a master degree in
Economics (Business economics) at the University of Ghent (Belgium) 1978.
Tax and accounting research at the University of Ghent (Belgium) 1988.
    I have a certificate
    SAP BW 3.0 (2005)
    SAP BI 7.0  (2006)
I have been working on several SAP BI projects including withthe integration with Business objects.
    Thanks for informing the possibilities.

    Hi Guy
I received my doctorate from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, a very dedicated SAP University Alliances member, See www.unisg.ch and look for their English pages (choose the language at the top of the page) and the doctoral studies programs. International Business, my area, is headed by Prof. Martin Hilb.  Even though these are full-time programs, he allowed me and some other students to pursue our degrees while working full-time in other countries. Prof. Hilb also encouraged us to find other professors on campus to supervise us who were more directly involved in research in our area of expertise - i.e. strategy, IT, corporate governance (my interest), finance, business innovation, etc.
I was able to condense my residence periods to just a few weeks over the first year - most others used 3 semesters (1.5 years).  We used teleconferences over my dissertation semesters and I returned for my defense in person.  I also was required to be there for my graduation.  I was living in Germany and the USA at the time.  But I know of others who were living in France, USA, and even China. The times we spent in Switzerland were condensed It was quite a challenge, but worth it. St. Gallen is a founding member of the Council of European Management Schools (CEMS) which includes recognized leading research universities in business and economics in the world.
I also had a colleague at Reutlingen University, a fellow professor who while he worked full-time as a vice-dean and then vice president started and completed his doctorate at Erasmus University in the Netherlands in operations management.  This is also a very highly regarded university.  There are many other examples of people pursuing doctoral studies parallel to work all over the world.  Of course, it is quite difficult, but you know that.
You could use your business network contacts, including in your own firm, to link to professors at some universities, UA members are listed under "University Alliances Around the World" on the right hand side of the following page https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/overview of our UA community portal. Most professors want full-time graduate students to live and work full-time for them doing research and teaching.  However, some are open to very experienced people with innovative ideas to research parallel to working, because they bring diversity and different perspectives to the table.
    Good Luck!

  • How to setup a Business Intelligence Department?

I am a contractor working as a technical business analyst. I would like to get into Business Intelligence so am taking a BI program at the local university.
I dont have any experience in BI so i wanted to learn by posting a question to the user community.
    - What questions would you have to pose in order to setup a business intelligence department and what types of questions would you ask yourself when generating key measurements?

    user10711997 wrote:
    - What questions would you have to pose in order to setup a business intelligence department Real answers from the corporate world? That would be along the the lines of..
Who is the executive or board sponsor? What's the budget? What are the strategic goals? What authority will you have for setting up the department? Who will you report to?
And yes, it will be more about dealing with corporate politics when managing a department than anything else. Not about shiny CV's. Not about publishing papers.
and what types of questions would you ask yourself when generating key measurements?Single question. Can the answer facilitate in either cutting losses or increasing profit? That is what the bottom line is. If you fail to show that there is a RIO for such a BI department, the department (and you) will have a very short future in the corporate.
I find these questions a bit weird though as they have nothing really to do with BI and everything to do in dealing with the culture, internal structures and operational procedures of a corporate. A simple issue like fully understanding HR procedures and policies can spell the difference between employing an excellent BI candidate, or loosing him/her to the competition. Or not following Procurement's red tape trail can delay purchasing of critical software or hardware by months.
People and management skills are by far more critical in such a position than claiming years and years of BI experience.

  • A brief info on "Oracle Utilities Business Intelligence"

    Hi All,
I need some information on "Oracle Utilities Business Intelligence". Is this the same as that of Tool > Utilities in OBIEE or having some product information.
If Anybody has any inputs on the same topic would be helpful.

Ok. Simple answer to your initial question: "No, Utilities Business Intelligence has got nothing to do with Tools > Utilities in the Admin Tool."
rnm and Stijn tried to give you hints..."Utilities BI" is BI for the utilities sector. As simple as that.

  • Session Timeout Setting in Business Intelligence Platform 4

Greetings.  We are using Business Intelligence Platform 4 SP 2.5.  We use LDAP authentication for logging in to the CMC, BI Launchpad, and Lifecycle Management console.  Our sessions expire after 10 minutes (of either activity or inactivity).  I haven't been able to find the setting that controls the timeout.  Does anyone know?
    Thank you in advance,
    Dave

    Hi Dave,
TO make the change for the timeout we need to navigate to following location:
    1. Program Files (x86)\SAP BusinessObjects\Tomcat6\webapps\BOE\WEB-INF
    2. Open the web.xml. Search for the "session-timeout" and change the value to as per your requirement.
    3. This change would take effect on both CMC and BI LaunchPad.
    4. Restart the Tomcat.
    At <INSTALLDIR>\Tomcat6\conf\web.xml change 30 to 60:
        <session-config>
            <session-timeout>60</session-timeout>
        </session-config>
    Regards,
    Sonia
