Business Intelligence related Question - R12

Hi All,
We are moving to R12 soon, and right now use Discoverer Reports, BI Publisher Reports, RDF Reports and an in-house built data warehousing tool which we want to get rid of due to maintenance overhead. Moving to R12, we would like to have one tool where we can consolidate all our reporting in.
Is there BI tool that comes as part of R12, that can be used for reporting? We also might use OBIEE, which I think is a seperately licensed product.
Do you have any sugegstions?

Some of the DBI (Daily Business Intelligence) stuff still works, I think, but I can't speak for how well the various dashboards have been maintained between 11i and R12. Oracle's preferred direction is seems to be for customers to use the OBIA (Business Intelligence Applications) product instead for pre-built Apps business intelligence (http://www.oracle.com/us/solutions/ent-performance-bi/bi-applications-066544.html#erp) . Business Connector related question

When I am in Business Connector and trying to right click on Trident package to Unlock it so I cab modify it and it gives me the following error:
Java.lang.NullPointer.Exception
When I click on more details I get Server Error occurred
Any ideas what is missing
or what can be done

I think all you need to do is the following.
1) Logon to the new development bussiness connector server via the administrative UI
2) From the admin screen on the left tab click under Packages -> Publishing
3) You will be taken to a screen the has available releases ...click on Add Subscribers
4) you window should have the following path Packages>Publishing>Add Subscriber
5) Choose a package. enter the following:
    Host Name: ( your production bus. connector server ip
    Host Port : ( your production bus. conn. server port ( default = 5555 )
    Transport : HTTP
    Remote user name: (your production bus conn user name )
    remote pw:              ( your production bus conn pw )
6) Click on add subscriber ( provided you have entered the correct un/pw and have acces to the server..you will get message that server is now subscriber to package
7) Click on return to publishing ( path should read Packages>publishing
8) Click on create release
9) under the package you set as a subscriber to production click on create release
10) enter package release information - click on create release at bottom of screen
11) return to publishing - path should read Packages>Publishing
12) you should now have a link send release to the right of your package
13) click on send release - from next screen click on your subscriber (production bus conn ).
thats it...

Business areas related question- please suggest

we are implementing mySAP 05 from scratch , please suggest if we should define business area and if we can use them wihtout flaging it at the company code level. is it beeter to just rely on profit center and acitvate it required for all accocunts instead of using business areas, we are trying to avoid using BA's actaully so really need good advice if the same functionaluty can be captured by pca and how can it be acheieved.

Hi,
I suggest that you should go with Profit Center Accounting and not Business Areas. As you are implementing from scratch I suggest that you use New GL where the functionality of segment accounting / Leading ledger and other ledgers are quite good and will be helpful.
Some of the OSS Notes which you can refer are 826357, 1018065. There is alkso a specific OSS note which distinguishes Profit Center Accounting and Business Areas. I will let you know the Note number once I trace it.

Don?t over index your OLTP tables, as every index you add increases the time it takes to perform INSERTS, UPDATES, and DELETES. There is a fine line between having the ideal number
of indexes (for SELECTs) and the ideal number for data modifications
Too many indexes on frequently updated (inclusive of inserts, updates and deletes) tables incur extra index maintenance
overhead. Generally, OLTP database designs should keep the number of indexes to a
functional minimum, again due to the high volumes of similar transactions combined with the cost of index maintenance.
Unused indexes incur the cost of index maintenance for inserts, updates, and deletes without benefiting any users. Unused
indexes should be eliminated. Any index that has been used (by select, update or delete operations) will appear in sys.dm_db_index_usage_stats. Thus, any defined index not included in this DMV has not been used since the last re-start of SQL Server.
I generally start to get concerned when I see more than about five or six relational indexes on a volatile table. Having too many relational indexes
has a negative effect on insert, update, and delete performance. Ultimately, it is a judgment call, based on your workload, your hardware and I/O subsystem, and on your experience.
Standard practices call for indexing strategies in OLTP systems to target an increase in concurrency versus query support; however, more indexes have to be created than is
desired to reach acceptable query performance. Thank you for the detailed response. I tried your suggestions and neither works.
LOV issue:
Within the Business View manager, i right-click on the LOV object and click "Edit List of Values..." and i get a dialog box that only shows me Available fields, List of Value Fields used, description field, and Referenced objects. Along with buttons for Clear Instance & Refersh Status.
I have read similar posts to what you suggested but never get to the same place as described.
Please advise....
as for _Max Number LOV _
I have researched this as well and found the same suggestion you made. But the PRM file does not have that value, and the file contains all XML code
Now what???

I have gone through the DBI implementation guide and tried to create a new report.
Created a report and published it.
In the process of creating Initial Request set (in Daily Business Intelligence Administrator), could not find the report (that I have developed in Daily Business Intelligence Designer) in Generate Request set window.
Any help is highly appreciated.

OPM Business Area Associated with R12 of Apps

Hi All,
We have decided to not go with purchasing views from an Oracle Partner (e.g. like Noetix) and consequently, we have decided to use the seeded views that come with Oracle Apps. Our OPM folder was very sparse. Specifically, it came with the following folders:
Process Item Master, Customer Sites, Customers, Item Categories, Organizational Items, Item Category Assignments, Item Category Types
Missing in this are the following:
Batches, Recipes, Routing, Formulas and everything else (e.g. OPM Financials)
In examining older versions of Discoverer & Apps, the OPM business area was well rounded (e.g. look at Infocaptor’s metadata http://www.infocaptor.com/bis_bas/process_manufacturing/business_areas1.html).
In Oracle’s statement of direction on Discoverer, it did not shed any light on whether there are any plans to make this a seeded business area.
We did create a service request on this issue and the response was very opaque (we were told to look at the Daily Business Intelligence views associated with Process Manufacturing). There was no clear answer from them.
-Has anyone heard if Oracle plans on more thoroughly seeding the OPM business area like it has historically seeded this business area?
Our configuration:
Discoverer Instance: OracleBI Discoverer Version 10.1.2.54.25
Database: Oracle 10G
Apps Version: R12

No, this is not possible. The business areas are just a grouping of folders. Workbooks can use many folders which can be located in many business areas. Therefore there is no direct relationship between business area and workbook.
This is why it is useful to use a naming convention when creating workbooks so that it is easy to identify and group workbooks.

Error in submiting request set from Daily Business Intelligence Administrat

I am getting the following error when submitting "ADS Incremental Financials Request Group" request set from "Daily Business Intelligence Administrator" responsibility in vision R12 instance :
APP-FND-01564: ORACLE error -1116 in SUBMIT: others
Cause: SUBMIT: others failed due to ORA-01116: error in opening database file 11
ORA-01110: data file 11: '<path>.dbf'
ORA-27041: unable to open file
SVR4 Error: 24: Too many open files
Additional information: 3.
The SQL statement being executed at the time of the error was: &SQLSTMT and was executed for the file &ERRFILE.
OS is Solaris 10.5
in a document it was suggested to increase the ulimit -n equal to ulimit -Hn and in solaris for R12 nofiles (descriptors) = 65536. Both ulimit -n and ulimit -Hn have been set to 65536 but still the error is showing.

Business Explorer and Business Intelligence Roles

Can someone answer the following questions about these 2 roles:
Business Explorer
pcd:portal_content/com.sap.pct/platform_add_ons/com.sap.ip.bi/Roles/com.sap.ip.bi.business_explorer_showcase
Business Intelligence
pcd:portal_content/com.sap.pct/platform_add_ons/com.sap.ip.bi/Roles/com.sap.ip.bi.bi_showcase
It appears the BI Role above has the Business Planning feature, but Business Explorer does not. Other than this, can someone explain the difference and why 2 seperate roles?
Also, if we give users the Business Explorer role, we do not want them to see the Bex Broadcasting tab that comes by default. Is the only way to avoid this is create a copy of this standard delivered ivew (contained in the Business Explorer Role) and remove this tab?
Can anyone share thoughts or experience with these 2 different roles and modifying?

Business Explorer role is from 3.5 and BI role is new in 04s.
You will have to create the copy and remove the unwanted iViews from the new role.
You can set permissions at iView level (permission to specfc users for broadcaster iView) but it will be hard maintaining it.

Business Intelligence and Analysis capabilities on XML content

On page 99 of Oracle XML DB Basic Demonstration pdf doc it si said: "Even though Business Intelligence, such as rollup and cube, are not XML aware they are able to process XML content exposed through a relational view"
is this true ? if so, how can i create a cube and/or
dimension from XML content exposed through a relational view ?
Unfortunately, Oracle 9i does not allow me to build materialzed views from XML content (Oracle objects)

The intention of the documentation maybe that anything you can query using SQL, you can expose as XML. For instance, you could create an analytic workspace, expose it through views, query the views through SQL, and return the results as XML.
