Business Mantras for Success in Future....

The recent focus on Service Oriented Architecture is not just something that SAP has been promoting to enhance the Enterprise Software business, but the acceptance that it's been finding shows that it indeed is a well thought of and researched initiatives. As businesses are growing, organically or inorganically, what keep the efficiencies on is the seamless flow of information. This information as of now, due to the mere size of enterprise software, makes its flow rigid and more focused on what can be achieved through them, rather than what the businesses really would like to have.
Size does really still matter, but so does agility and flexibility, coupled with adaptability. ESA does allow companies and business process owners to think of innovative way to reach the end customer and identify as well as deliver exactly what they may want. This enable the concept of "core competency" to be implemented uniquely to each business as they wish to, rather than just being a "me too" of a benchmark firm. After all, each business, like people, has some uniqueness to it, which it would like to leverage. This could be in terms of the Branding, Go to market strategy, Low cost or service provider image.
These changes of course make change management more important. Not just in terms of the competency required by the Business Process Experts involved in further implementation, also the right education to the clientele in terms of the possibilities existing and the business impact of the same.

Sridhar,
what you say is true , what ESA offers is the flexibility to change your IT to suit your business rather than the other way round. Any aquisition or growth also comes with the baggage of integrating / scaling existing systems and/or integrating a multitude of IT systems to function together , this is exactly what ESA tries to hit at.
Some examples of web based architectures / on demand slutions could be found at salesforce.coms web enabled platform for CRM ( Sorry SAP for the reference to a competitior!!!) or the transaction based pricing models adoptted by many..
But then it is not a quick fix for all that today-I-am-in a-traditional-discrete-systems-spread-across-the-world-managing with-excel-sheets to totally-web-enabled / ESA enabled bleeding edge platform tomorrow. It would need a lot of vision and tenacity to go through the change and the capacity to push it through the organization.
I think it would be initially competitor / business leader  driven .. Company X has done this , can we do the same ?.. and unless this vision *** tenacity is available or appropriate leaders found , it would still be piecemeal and result in certain functions being ESA compliant and other business still falling back on the old excel sheets ..
My 0.02
Arun
P.S The above may be a pessimistic way of looking at change management and ESA and BPX but then in many old economy companies , they still choose to build their own applications internally or outsourced rather than implement a package and try and align themselves to industry standards...

  • Business Case for OCM

I am interested to see if anyone has any content they are able to share around the business case for OCM presented in a manner that has managers understand what the OCM game is about and why it is important to fund it and support it.

Our firm has incorporated OCM in our SAP/BPC delivery methodology and it has met with a very warm acceptance by our clients.  Our OCM material has been maturing for over a decade, but is customized for each client, and clearly is a competitive advantage for us.  So we are more than a bit hesitant to publish it to an open forum.  I've been involved with OCM related work since 1991 and agree with many of the commentaries above regarding the 'critical' deal-breaking nature of well managed OC.  I have a goofy mantra I use to describe this reality... "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't necessarily make him do the backstroke."
I have been saying for a long time that IT systems work is the technological equivalent of human organ transplant surgery.  I use this analogy with our clients and it seems to help everyone get it intellectually.  Just think of the key issue surrounding organ transplants and how that can be applied to our work.  Compatibility of tissue, rejection, anti-rejection medication, severing of vital connections and reconnecting them (nerves, muscles, vessels, etc.).  All the preparation that goes into it it (technically and emotionally).
Isnt' it interesting that when we introduce a new system that "replaces" an old one, the company, just like the human body, sends out corporate white blood cells to kill the foreign object even though its very life depends upon the survival of that object?  So what do we do?  We administer anti-rejection medication IN ADVANCE of the operation and after to ensure that NATURAL reaction does not happen.  We have to take equivalent measures when we introduce new systems.  The OCM issue then is to define what equals anti-rejection medication in a corporate envivronment.  Our OCM discipline defines that and engages the organization in creating it and administering it to itself so it can optimize its success.
As for getting it in terms of the bottom line, y'all are right--that is a little tough for most of us to document, but you'd have to have been hiding under a rock and not read any relevant magazine, blog, or whitepaper for the past 15+ year to be so ignorant of this histoical fact.  The IT landscape is littered with the dead or battered bodies of leaders and followers who have launched their ships unprepared to deal with this monster.
Our OCM kick-off Workshop seems to create in the minds of our clients a clear and undeniable gap between what they'd get if they don't take care of these matters.
Sorry to go so long on this, but it's one of my favorite topics as you can tell.  Hope this is useful in some small way.

  • Structuring a Business Area for Reporting Periods and Points in Time

    Dear all,
I'm in the process of designing my first business area for discoverer.
The database is for people staying in accommodation over various periods.
(Anything from individual days to periods of 15 years!!)
The reports I'm producing fall into two categories:
    (a) Reports on periods of time such as:
Accomodation days during a year broken down by Region
Trend of accommodation days per month during a two year period
    (b) Reports on a particular point in time such as:
Number of people in accommodation on a particular day
I'm trying to work out how to structure the business area.
If I think about requirement (a), I'm inclined to create a view which
splits up periods into one month chunks (the smallest period I think I need).
By this I mean having a view which gives me a row for every month for which any period of accommodation is active. This makes reporting on a monthly basis fairly easy.
If I think about (b), I'm inclined to create a view which leaves the accommodation periods as single rows and then calculate a boolean field which indicates whether that accomodation is active on the date in question.
It seems that these two requirements need different structures in the business area. Maybe it's best to create two folders which draw on the two different views.
    Any thought would be appreciated.
    Regards
    Suhada

    Hi,
As you would probably expect, it all depends on your requirement and the table design.
You can create a date hierarchy in Discoverer that contains the day, month, year levels and this will make it easy to create reports with totals aggregated at these levels.
However, if your table contains, for example, the start and end dates when people move in and out of accommodation, then you will need to have a period table so that you can report on the months between the start and end dates. The period table will list all past and future months and you can join this to your data to obtain totals for all the periods.
If you need to have reports that display zeros or nulls for periods where there is no data, then you will need to outer join your data with a period table.
The decision on whether to use views or folders and joins in the EUL depends on the complexity of your data model. If you need to join many tables together to produce a single report, then you should consider putting some or all the joins into database views.
    Hope that helps,

  • CRM orders with error "Do not enter a business agreement for sold-to party"

    Dear SDN'ler,
after creating orders in SAP CRM via ISA (CRM 4.0) and uploading them to R/3 all orders are created successfully in R/3 but an error message is sent back to SAP CRM in case of ALL orders.
    Error message is the following:
"Do not enter a business agreement for sold-to party xyz"
    Message no. CRM_BILLING011
    Diagnosis
The field "FI-CA active" is not selected for the sold-to party 6000201 in the business master record. Since the business agreement is used in the component FI-CA, excluding the control of processes, it makes sense to enter a business agreement.
    Procedure
    Delete the entered business agreement.
==> Could someone please give me some more information about the mentioned "business agreement"? Where do I find field "FI-CA active" (in R/3 or CRM customer master data?)?
==> And how can I eliminate this error message for CRM orders in SAP CRM?
    Thanks a lot.
    Best Regards,
    Rainer Gryschka

Please check the customising setting under following path:
SPRO --> Customer Relationship Management --> Master Data --> Business Partner -- > Business Agreement --> Define Basic Settings

Please help me out to determine the correct Business packages for my requirement.
    Thanks & Regards
    Rajeev Bikkani

    Hi,
    > 1. If i go with same backend ECC 6 Ehp 4 with Portal 7.3, than what are all the BP's that i have to deploy?
BP's depends upon what all functionality you want to use. e.g If you are using ESS/MSS then you need to deploy BP's for ESS/MSS.
    > 2. Can i go with same Business packages   those i am using currently with Portal 7.01?
You should install latest version of BP's on NW 7.3 like for ESS/MSS latest version is 1.51.
    > 3. How to migrate my ESS and MSS apps (customized apps NWDI )from Portal 7.01 to 7.3
You need to migrate all these customization manually as PAR files are not more supported for NW 7.3.
    > 4. in future if we upgarde our backend to EHP 5 than what happens to WD java Application. i come to know that ESS application are totally built on WD ABAP  for EHP5
    >
It depends upon you. If you want to use ESS/MSS for web dynpro ABAP then you need to install BP of ESS for web dynpro ABAP but if you don't want to use web dynpro then you can use same way as you are doing currently.
Check SAP Note 1450179 - ESS Based on Web Dynpro ABAP Available.

    - Configuration Wizard: PI Self Test for AEX
However when we were Checking the AEX Configuration as per help.sap.com

        Enter https://<host>:<port>/sld .
Choose Start of the navigation path Business System Next navigation step Integration Engine Java <SID> Next navigation step Integration End of the navigation path.
The pipeline URL must be: http://<host_fully_qualified>:<port>/XISOAPAdapter/MessageServlet?ximessage=true .
    More information: SAP Note 1435392
for us the Pipeline URL is as below

  • OSB: Configuring business service for JMS Queue

    Hi,
I want to produce messages into a JMS queue from OSB proxy service. I have created business service for the JMS queue. I also want to return Status code=200, Status Messgae=Success if the message is successfully inserted into the Queue. Kindly let me know how to do this.
I tried using Service Callout to call the business service but it is not allowing me to use it because my business service is a one-way operation. So, i tried with Publish activity but my doubt is how and where to configure request payload for the publish activity. I could not find any.
And how do i know if the message is successfully inserted so that i can send the Status=200 back to the calling proxy service.
    Kindly help in this regard.
    Thanks in advance.

As suggested, use QoS=ExactlyOnce as RoutingOption within the Publish to business service. If there was any error it will send the flow to error handler where you can do a reply with failure to return HTTP status code=500 to the caller of the proxy service.
If you do a reply with success the caller will receive HTTP status code=200

  • Business Packages for BI-IP

We are currently in the blueprinting phase for NW2004s BI-IP, as part of the blueprinting we are currently doing investigation around our options in integrating these applications into the portal.
Are there any indications when and if business packages for the BI-IP will available?
    Thanks,
    Darin Paton
    TransAlta

    Hi Darin,
Currently, there are no projects in process to develop business packages for BI-IP, and so far I don't have any information that would indicate that there are plans for this in the near future. So I'd probably continue with the blueprinting on the assumption that they would not be a factor.

    Hi,
I've installed SAP Business One for HANA PL11 successfully but when i try to install sap b1 client on windows client there's an error during the installation of DI API (hanadb client installed already). I also noticed that there's no hardware key generated on the license control center.
    Please help.

    Hi Norman
    Thanks for your reply.
I have installed (and reinstalled!) the 32 bit hdbclient (build 69) at /usr/sap/hdbclient32 and rebooted but I still don't get a hardware key.  I noticed you mention that you'd executed libB1_LicenseEngine.so manually.  Is that correct? Is this something that you can guide me to?

    Hi,
The syntax of the created SDA may be wrong
Check the main attributes defined in SAP_MANIFEST.MF are equal or not to their corresponding componentelement entry.
SAP_MANIFEST.MF file is located in META-INF subfolder in the .sda file.
The values of "keycounter" and "counter" should be the same. Also the values of "keyname" and "name" should be identical.

  • Business Components for Java entity beans of J2EE

What is the future of Business Components for Java with the new standard entity beans of the sun Java 2 Entreprise Edition?
    Thanks.
    null

The Standard Entity Beans are a component (JavaBean) that can be a small piece of the ultimate application needs.
Oracle Business Component for Java is a complete framework that has numerous features that make developing COMPLETE applications easy.
Please download the white paper on Business Components, try your hand at creating an application with Business Components (using the wizards) and you will see that Business Components for Java is much more than a simple (/complex) reusable component, it is a complete framework which maked developing N-tier applications almost trivial by allowing you to focus on writing your business logic while the framework takes care of all the application infrastructure and the necessary plumbing.
