Business Objects Future Carrier

Hi,
I am working in a CORE JAVA Based product as a Core JAVA Developer for nearly 4 years.
In Parallel, i have a chance to look into BUSINESS OBJECTS XI as well for last 2 years.
Our clients are using BO XI R2 and i have upgraded [newly installed and import from BO XI R2] to R3.
Now i have a knowledge in designing an Universe by creating a new connection and Import/Export the universe, and also created a new user accounts, group, restarting the CMC Servers in admin level.
I am able to generate the sample reports at the basic level.
I am confused to move my carrier in BO or JAVA?
Please guide me, Which one will be the best among these two [JAVA or BO] in IT/SW Industry for longer term for at least next 10 years?
Thanks in advance.....
Regards,
Karthik.

As I wrote in my earlier response this question is inappropriate for SDN forums.  I would recommend that you find career guidance forums and other material somewhere else on internet and and other media to get an answer to your question. We are unable to discuss anything other than technical questions on BO\ SAP products here. Please close this thread.

    Please refer to the thread:
    BI-IP and Business Objects?

    Ian,
reading through the messages, there seem to be a few questions that are raised.  After attending SAP Financials 2008, here is what I got from it:
    1. IP vs BPC:  IP is still in production and will be developed (no commitment on time though.  I was told somewhere between 18-24 months before it goes to maintenance mode).  There is some functionality difference from BPC and right now these are two separate products.  There is a talk of a possible integration in the "distant" future
    2. BPC is in process of being developed for BI, but currently it is only running on top of Microsoft SQL server. The BI version is slated to be released June 28th, but majority of the experts are fairly pessimistic about that date.
Now, the main question is what will happen to IP when BEx and BO tools converge into one - based on my understanding, we are going to see ADDITIONAL functionality.  Since all the WAD and Excel activities are based on BEx API's, it is highly unlikely that they are going to be dismissed in the new product.  The process in which we assign functions/commands to the planning model might change, but I think only for the best

  • Insert or Update data in SAP with Business Objects?

    Hi all,
I am new to Business Objects world with my little expertise in Crystal Reports and Xclesius.
Could you please clarify me that is there any solution or technology or Product of Business Objects which not only make impressive dashboards and analyze the data but also can communicate with back end SAP R/3 to save or update data.
We are actually analyzing our Client requirements in which there is a need of Dashboards as well as some custom configurations that needs to be saved somewhere in the SAP system in order to make decisions in future.
Our back end system is SAP BW. One possibility is to use Adobe Flex as a base architecture with BSP and BW but we are more concerned with what BOBJ provides.
    Looking forward for your suggestions.

  • BI report tools VS Business Object

    Hi Gurus,
I would like to understand differences between reporting capabilities in NW2004S-BI and Business Object. Do you have any document or link ?
And about SAP licences ? If I install BO over BW must I pay for all users in any case or I must pay only for Administrator users ?
I will assign points for all valuable answers. Thank you in advance.
    Ciao.

    Riccardo,
Crystal reports is not supported with NW04s...

reproducing the message from the support portal :
SAP and Business Objects have decided to end the area of their partnership that relates to formatted reporting for BI by mutual consent. This will be effective as of the end of September. The software partnership with Business Objects and their Powered by SAP NetWeaver status are not affected.
the reseller agreement ended on September 30th, 2006
existing customers will still be able to get updates/upgrades (new releases) without additional costs as long as the number of cpu's/named users stays as is
for releases newer than Business Objects XI Release 1 the software delivery process has changed
SAP itself does not provide these new releases through the SAP service marketplace but forwards such requests to Business Objects
Business Objects triggers the shipment (or provides access to its download area) and takes also care for the license key provisioning if needed
for future requests please use csn (xx-part-crr)

  • PostalOne Set Sch Induction Date and Time in Business Objects

We are running Presort 8.00c, and our printer just told us that PostalOne will not run unles we have Set Sch Induction Date and Time set with parameters.  Where in Business Objects is this information coming from?  I am trying to find this informatin, and have a hard time.  Thank you for your help.

    Larry,
I'm assuming you are looking for the following to be populated in the mail.dat
    scheduled ship date - .csm
    scheduled ship time - .csm
    CSA Agreement ID - .seg
    CSA Trip Id - .csm
Currently these are not populated by Presort and would need to be added by using a mail.dat editor.  This is something that our development team is looking at possibly adding in a future release.

  • Business Objects, Value Objects and more

    Hey,
I've got a general question about business objects (aka entity objects or data transfer objects). The scenario I am using is not one of my own, but it might be a future one. Thus, I'd really appreciate all feedback.
Let's say that i've got a desktop application which purpose is to manage personal DVD collections. Shortly explained, what i would do here is to create a class Dvd to represent a physical DVD. Then i would create the classes DvdServices and DvdDao. The DvdServices class is what my application will use to retrive and store Dvd instances, and takes care of all session and transaction handling. The DvdDao class is where all database communication takes place. This class will only be used by the DvdServices class.
Now, say that i would want to keep things simple and use the same business object both in the front end and the back end (yes, i'm using Hibernate). That is, the Dvd instances returned by the DvdServices class is the ones i also would like to use in my GUI. This is where i start to get a little uncertain about best practice.
Let us say that i use an instance of a Dvd to present some information about a dvd to the user. However, the user would not only like to see what's already stored about that dvd - but also edit some details related to it (such as the title, description or the like). What i would do here (to support editing), is to modify the Dvd class so that it holds a DvdAttributes object which contains all its editable values like title and description (in other words, the state - except for the id and a timestamp value). Thus, i also modify the DvdServices class and create a method called updateDvd(Dvd dvd, DvdAttributes attributes). The method updateDvd() in the DvdServices class, internally, makes a reference to the existing DvdAttributes, applies the new DvdAttributes to the Dvd instance, and tries to save it. If something goes wrong, transaction is rolled back, and the old DvdAttributes are applied to the Dvd class in order to reflect the state of the Dvd instance.I like to think of the Dvd instance as the business object, and the DvdAttributes instance as a related value object (the terminology is probably all wrong here?).
My question regarding all this is wether it "adheres" to what one might consider as "best practices" (if something like that exists in relation to this)? Could i do things smarter in this case? Is there something which does not make sense (always good to hear a second opinion!).
    All feedback appreciated!

I don't believe a DTO would ever be considered a business object.

It appears that 'Dvd' is in fact a DTO. Probably best to name it as such - DvdDto.
Let us say that i use an instance of a Dvd to present some information about a dvd to the user. However, the user would not only like to see what's already stored about that dvd - but also edit some details related to it (such as the title, description or the like). As stated no.
Process flow would normally be like this.
    Happy path (it worked)
    1. Query - returns DvdDto
    2. GUI - display DvdDto
    3. Modify DvdDto
    4. Update (send to server/backend) DvdDto
    5. (Return - It worked.)
    Sad path (it failed)
    1. Query - returns DvdDto
    2. GUI - display DvdDto
    3. Modify DvdDto
    4. Update (send to server/backend) DvdDto
    5. Exception is thrown
    6. (Return - It failed)
Step 6 is a bit ambigous because it depends on the user and the actual client/server relationship. It could be an exception, a message or just true/false (false is failed.)
In the above there is no step that corrects or alters the DvdDto instance that was thrown. One reason for this is that it might be a minot mistake on the users part and if you destroy everything they alread typed in they are not going to be happy.

  • Business Objects / BODS Upgrade

    Hi Guys.
We have an end to end Business Objects solution implemented in our environment consisting of BODS (XIR3), Business Objects (XIR3) and Crystal Reports (2008). We are planning to upgrade the BODS and Business Objects environments to the latest version but would first like just the BODS to be upgrade as the support for the application has now been ceased by SAP. I believe for the same we would require to use IPS as BOE will still be at the old version and in the latest version BOE and BODS have been integrated.
Please can you suggest any documentation which we can refer for such scenarios and will we be facing any problems once we upgrade BOE in future in integrating it with BODS as that will be dependent on IPS. Any information on the Pros and Cons on using this methodology will be very helpful.
Please let me know if in case any further details are required. Thanks in anticipation of your help.
    Cheers,
    Shazin

    Hi
since there is no really an upgrade package from XI R2 to XI 3.x you have to do a new XI 3.x installaiton and copy afterwards your repository contents from the old to the new system. THis means that the old system is always available for your users. The migration process is officially supported and SAP should provide support for any  related issues.
I would recommend to start on both sides with the most actual Service pack and fix pack version. For XI R2 this should be SP6 with FP 6.1 (note: you should have at least SP4 on XI R2 in order to do the migration) and for XI 3.1 this should be SP 2 with FP 2.6.

  • Business Objects XI 4.0 Semantic Layer Questions

Can someone tell me if the new Business Objects XI 4.0 Semantic Layer is an alternative to the use of Universes?
I.E.  There will be no need for Crystal Reports 2011 Enterprise, and Xcelcius to use Universes at all to access SAP ERP data as well as SAP BI/BW data?
Is the new direction of SAP not to use Universes to access ERP and BI/BW data at all?
We are a new SAP NETWEAVER ERP installation with BI/BW and are debating on using
    1)Business Objects 3.2 with Universes
2)Crystal Reports with custom SQL, Rapidmarts and Data Integrator
3)Business Objects XI 4.0 with this new Semantic Layer and BI Consumer Services.
Any suggestions,  pros and cons would be greatly appreaciated.
We are looking to align ourselves with future SAP Business Objects architectures.
    Thanks in Advance,

    Hi Randy,
Universe is an important part of the Semantic Layer, whether it is version 3.x or version 4.x of SAP BusinessObjects. In version 4.0 (officially known as BI 4.0), you will be using the new Information Design Tool to build universe. It is highly recommended for all of your presentation tools (i.e. WebI, Crystal, Xcelsius/Dashboard, etc) to go through the new Information Design Tool for data (including BW data).
The BI 4.0 Virtual Launch is scheduled on Feb 23. I suggest you to sign up at http://virtualevents.sap.com/business-analytics/login.aspx.
By the way, the SAP BusinessObjects does not have a version 3.2. The most current one is version 3.1. You might be confused with the FixPack which is now up to 3.4.
    Hope this helps.

  • Business Objects(BOs) & Data Transfer Objects(DTOs)-both needed ?

    In a J2EE system...
I know that "Business Objects" (BOs) are basically value objects (VOs) ...lots of getters and setters and some business logic. These are basically to model nouns in the system. Eg Student BO.
I know that "Data Transfer Objects" (DTOs) are value objects (VOs)....with getters and setters... with the purpose of avoiding multiple method calls...to avoid overhead...which effects performance. eg it's better to pass a Student DTO then say...pass the student ID and student name and student age etc etc.
Main question : Should a system have both ? If yes, why do I need a StudentBO.java and then another StudentDTO.java....when they are so similar ?...when both are basically VOs ? Can't I just use BOs to serve as DTOs ?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I've started using BO's and DTO's since 3 months .With my experiece i understand we nned both of them.
The BusinessObject represents the data client. It is the object that requires access to the data source to obtain and store data.
    DTO
This represents a Transfer Object used as a data carrier. The DataAccessObject may use a Transfer Object to return data to the client. The DataAccessObject may also receive the data from the client in a Transfer Object to update the data in the data source.
From this i want to tell you that We are not gonna do any operation on BO's but we do operations on DTO

  • Use a dynamic list of email addresses to email a report via Business Objects Server 11

    Post Author: wolfgang666
    CA Forum: General
I use Business Objects Server version 11 to distribute reports via email but was asked if there was a way to only send the reports to those people listed in the report (which changes daily) instead of the entire distribution list. I can create a list of email addresses as a variable within the report but can't find any way to pass it to the Business Objects server "To:" field located in the destination screen. I would expect to see some option for sending to some value located in the report but alas no such option is evident. This seems like a feature the product should be capable of doing as it is so basic. Any other way to do this that anybody can think of? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    Matt Frazier

    Hi Alan,
The simplest thing would be to simply use the Import Wizard to create a BIAR file and then back up the required CR's and instances to the BIAR file. So for instance you would use the "Import Folders and Objects" option. So the source system would be the system you are decomissioning and the Destination would be the BIAR file. Once that is done you can use the BIAR file to import the report content into another system in the future.

  • Send Business Object Instance as Attachment in SAP mail

    Hi All,
The requirement is something like this. I would like to send out a mail to user with a Sales Order Display as an attachment. I did go through some of the documentation that all specifies sending lists, Office Documents as attachments but not Business Objects. Anyone having any idea in acheiving this. If there is any coding associated with that then I would be happy if I could get that too as I am working on a tight timeline.
    Best Regards,
    Sudhindra

    Sudhi,
I am not sure if there is a way to attach an object to a deadline message. All you can define for a DL is the text of the message. You can navigate to the objects in the parent task though. You do that by displaying the DL message then navigate to the Monitored Work Item and click on Available objects tab. You can also try to attach the object to the task itself and see if it is carried to the DL message.
Just did a quick check and there doesn't seem to be a way to attach an object to a workitem in background. And also attachments are not carried to the DL notification. Therefore the only way I know of is as mentioned above to display from the parent WI!!

  • Access restriction for business objects in same solution

    Hi All,
Requirement: I have one single solution with 4 modules. 1 module is common and other 3 are industry specific. When i roll it out to a customer, i what restrictions on Business Objects. So that i can roll out single or combination of modules as per requirement.
Hence the configuration requirement would be  as follows:
We need one core configuration for the entire solution which will have the Common Scope part included in it.
We need industry wise configuration ( could be business configuration )
       Script level screen restriction.
We tried creating a BAC element with Business Topic and Business Options and tried to link BO's to it.  But we are finding a problem with this solution, even a user will be able to change the configuration and get access to a module which he didn't pay for.
    Regards,
    Rudhra Udayakumar
    [email protected]

    Hello Rudhra,
If the switches are in the BC every user with access to the BC can switch the modules on and off.
As we do not support the interaction / referenceing between different solutions (at least not in the near future ) you need to put all you need in one solution.
I understand that you want to make a reuse of the Common module somehow.
    My suggestion would be
Develop the Common in a Solution Template
Develop each industry specific in an own solution
(Re-)Deploy the Common Solution Template to each of the industry specific solutions
You can then sell the industry specific solution one by one and have only one development source for the Common module.

  • Crystal Reports to Business Objects

    Hi Gurus,
Please help me out with your valuable suggestions. Here is my scenario,
Very recently my client implemented Business Objects for their Corporate reporting in place of Crystal Enterprise.
There are about 400+ reports that to be converted in Business Objects. In the phase 1 we planned to convert the High priory reports of about 80 + reports.
Our game plan is to convert CR to Universes and then after using Universes >>>webi reports. Please suggest me whether we are going in the right path.
After analyzing the reports I found like we are using about 65-80 tables over all. Please suggest me, Can I create a single Universe and point the 70 reports to that single Universe or do I need to create a single universe for single crystal report.
Moreover, we are upgrading my back end too. But in future some of the tables, fields may exist or not. As the Back-end is also in the initial phases. So please suggest how to convert the CR to Universe with back-end modification.
As having discussion with client. User have no experience in creating any sort of reporting, All they need is exact the same report in Business Objects.
Please post me your valuable suggestion.

    Hello,
    Here a are few tips:
    - How many different data sources are used?
A Business Objects universe can only point at one data source (there are some workarounds for this). Therefore it's quite important to know how many different data sources are involved.
    - Complexity of reports
When developing complex reports in webi you'll find that you can't always meet the requirements by using standard webi functionality.
In that case you will have to move some of the more complex calculations to the universe. Therefore it's not uncommon for a very complex report to have one universe but in most case a universe will serve multiple webi reports.
    - Ad-hoc reporting.
From reading your post I donu2019t think this is very relevant to you but I mention it anyway.
If users want to use the universe for ad-hoc reporting, always make sure that you give proper business descriptions to the dimension and measure objects.
Also, it's important that you don't try to stuff everything into one universe as this will confuse the business users. Try to divide the universes into the logical business areas i.e. finance, HR, Purchasing etc.
    - Training / Involve the Business
Have you considered training a few web intelligence super users that can help converting some webi reports?
If you involve the Business users at an early stage of the project, the reaction to the change of reporting system will be a lot more positive.
    - Make the reports more intuitive
Instead of simply re-developing all the reports in exactly the same way as they were developed in Crystal look for ways to enhance the usability.
Business Objects has many great features that could help with this i.e. input controls, data tracking, profiles, dynamic recipients etc).
Also, you will find a lot of duplication i.e. multiple version of the same report with different prompts. You should possibly try to consolidate those reports.
    Best regards
    Rim Geurts
EDIT: Like Fritz mentioned, you probably don't need to migrate all of the reports because you can simply migrate you Crytsal report to te new BO environment

  • Business Objects XI 4.0 client tools vs Business Objects XI 3.1 client tools

    Hello experts,
I have to reset my computer where I have installed : Windows Vista / Office 2003 / Business Objects XI 3.1 client tools ( in the server I have installed Business Objects XI 3.1 SP 4).
In the new computer, I will have a Windows 7, but the problem is that I can't install  the Business Objects XI 3.1 version that I have in the old computer. Because It need office 2003  or office xp
My question is that  if the Business Objects XI 4.0 client tools supported all the objects that I had created with the Business Objects XI 3.1. And If it will be a problem in the future with the other persons who is working with the Business Objects XI 3.1.
    Thank you very much,

    Hi Mark,
    1. Your desired configuration should be supported, please read appropriate PAM (Product Availability Matrix).
    2. Your Client tools 4.0 cannot log on to older version CMS (3.1).
    3. My config is Windows 7, MS Office 2010, BO Client tools 3.1 (SP6), BO Client tools 4.1 and more tools like Crystal, Dashboards, Lumira, Live Office...
    All tools run OK.

  • Business Object Explorer + Crystal Report

    hi,
i need a way to upload a crystal report in the business object explorer? can anybody solve this problem?
    regards,
    thomas

You might take a look at the very latest version of the Crystal Reports Viewer. It might have been added to the report designer as well, but I don't have the latest SP/FP of it yet.  CR Viewer 2008 can be downloaded from SAP at no cost and can coexist on PC with the CR designer.
    http://www.sap.com/solutions/sapbusinessobjects/sme/reporting-dashboarding/reporting/viewer/index.epx
There's a new beta feature -a little button ( magnifying glass and chart, labeled beta)  that lets you export the Crystal Report data to a demo of "Explorer in the Cloud".  It's pretty cool, but is limited to 3MB of data.  You can load your data to the demo Explorer in the Cloud anonymously, in which case the data is seleted when you end your session, or you can setup an acct (no cost) and have the data retained.
Here's a link that will provide a little more background.
    https://bi.ondemand.com/explorer?utm_source=CRViewer&utm_medium=in%2Bproduct%20link&utm_campaign=Crviewer-Explorer
So while the functionality is just in beta now, it looks like you'll be able to do what you want in the future.  I think it would be extremely useful.
