Business Objects Overview

I hope some one can help.  I'm trying to get my head around Business Objects and so far all I've done is get confused by all the various products, components and services.  Can anyone point me towards a good document/page which will explain each products differences and uses at a technical level?
All the info I've found so far focuses on a particular product but doesn't explain how (or why) it relates to anything else.
Thanks in advance.
Pete

The BusinessObjects portfolio contains many different tools for different usages. And some of the tools cross over each other a little bit.
In a nutshell, most of the tools are surrounding the BusinessObjects Enterprise which is typically sold at CPU licenses. it contains 2 report development tools called Web Intelligence (short for WebI) and Desktop Intelligence (short for DeskI). WebI is a thin client and DeskI is a fat client. DeskI is supposed to be an interim tool to bring the users from legacy versions of BusinessObjects over to WebI. But since WebI still cannot do everything (although it is getting closer and closer) DeskI can do, people are reluctant to let go, and SAP BusinessObjects has to continue to carry this tool for now. If you are starting new, you can ignore DeskI as it will eventually be phased out.
There is another reporting tool called Crystal Report which requires separate licenses. It is the most powerful and most popular reporting tool on this planet. But it requires good technical knowledge to use it. Crystal can connect to the data source either through a Universe (the metadata layer) or directly. WebI requires a Universe to connect, but it is more user friendly and it is meant to be used by power users and not IT developers.
The BusinessObjects suite also provides a pseudo-reporting/visualization tool called Xcelsius, which can present information graphically. It is very easy to use and it is supposed to display information at very high level view for quick "health-check" of your organization. It can also be used for "what-if" analysis. But very often, people tend to dump too much data into the tool to make it unusable.
The BusinessObjects portfolio also include numerous miscellaneous tools for different purposes and usage. But what I have provided to you above should give you a good starting point.
Hope this helps.

  • Business Object Suite Overview

    Greetings,
I have downloaded Business Objects Edge Series Xi 3.1 and have to admit that now I question what for.
I was actually looking for Crystal Reports trial versions but somehow ended up with above mentioned software suite.
Now I wonder, if SAP provides a schema which provides an overview on how all these Business Objects solutions integrate with each other and where within the SAP Community Network a set of tutorials and support information can be found.
    Any suggestion is appreciated.

  • In business object what is the use of Interface

    hi ppl,
In each business object there is a interface what can we do with that. When i used wizards like dynamic parallel processing it asked for wizards what is the actual use of interfaces.

    Hi Dheepak,
I have an overview on interfaces. Someone pls correct me if i am wrong here.
Interfaces are generally used to group a set of attributes and methods that can be used across different business objects. You can create your own interfaces in SWO1 and when you include these interfaces in business objects you get all these attributes and methods in the business objects (Inheritance). Its basically for re-usability of the code(Reusability). Apart from that if required you can implement your own code for the methods thus maintaining the same name with a different logic for your BO (Polymorphism).
For example assume that you have a "Display" method and a few attributes in an interface. The "Display" method is used to display a particular transaction. Now you can include this interface in any BO and all these attributes and methods will be available in that BO with their respective implementation code. Now if you want the method to form a different action in any particular BO you can go ahead and redefine this code in that BO. This redefinition will not affect other BO's that had implemeted this same interface. All other BOs which had implemented this interface will continue to function as per the implementation code defined in the interface. This makes sure that the same method works in different ways in different BO's (Polymorphism)
Supertype<-->Subtype delegation will allow us to inherit the supertype/subtype methods/attributes but it does not allow us to change the underlying code in individual BOs. Hence polymorphism cant be acheived here
    Thanks,

  • Business Object and Netweaver, Event Insight

    Hello,
Can anyone tell me if Business Objects requires Netweaver Application Server?  Also, Event Insight, includes Sybase CEP, Business Object and other components.  Is that all on one server that is a Netweaver Application Servier?  Or is it some combination of Netweaver and non-netweaver on a partitioned server or some other set-up.
Event Insight, I think is shown as 1 server.
    Thx

    Hi
The Business Objects Enterprise Intelligence Platform (former Business Objects Enterprise) does not require Netweaver as application server.
You can have a look at: http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/bi where yoo find lots of information and overview presentations

  • Business Object, SAP BW and SAP Enterprise Portal

    Hello all,
I've a few questions about the possibility for linking Business Object, SAP BW and the SAP Enterprise Portal.
The Business Package MSS 1.41 give us a functionality to display (in a federated portal) personalized Budget and costs in an Overview Iview (kind of Welcome page).
Those information are retrieved from SAP BW and I'd like to know if it's possible to retrieve those data (with the same functionality) from Business Object tool.
Is it possible to have those personalized reports without having a direct link (standard architecture) between SAP BW and the federated portal?
Thank you in advance fro your answers.

    Hi,
The procedure to replicate BW users in BO is explained in detail on the blog of Ingo Hilgefort:

    Dear,
I think  you have created GL as cost element.
Now you have to assign it in OKB9 - Display View "Account assignment" : Overview
In OKB9 specify weather this cost element give impact to cost center or profitability segment.
You have a cost account defined in accounts determination (OBYC). But every cost account must have a cost object associated (internal order, cost center, and so on).
You must decide what is the cost object to 'receive' the cost value on the account.
Go to OKB9, insert the account (can be plant dependant) and the cost object, then repeat GR.

  • EEWB business object

    Hi Experts,
I am a starter in WebUI. I read a blog - [Enhance CRM views EEWB|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/weblogs?blog=/pub/wlg/13987]
In above blog in create extension wizard they are giving input for EEW business object and extension type. Assume I have a account overview screen in CRM and I want to add a custom field for this screen. Can you please tell me how to find the EEW business object and extension type for this scenario. Is there some tcode or some table where EEW bus object for different CRM screens in maintained which can be used in EEWB Tcode. Please share your valuable inputs.
    - Bharath

    Hi bharth,
There is no separate Tcode to find out EEW business object and extension type ,
Each extension type contains a structure by enhancing the structure we add new field to that structure .
all related structure are grouped and assigned to one business object  . for example while working with employee details
    builcontactperson search .
if you want to check all the relation's then enter tcode Genil_model_browser . there enter component set all and execute
there u can find all relations.
    Regards
    Siva

    Dear sandeep pande  ,
BO was brought up by SAP and It will soon be included in SAP BI in next recent versions.SO its better to join BI. as it has more scope these days/
YOu should know the advantages of BI over BO
BO is the reporting toll of data warw house
BI is itself a data ware house.
the next generation SAP BI will be using BO as reporting tool instead of BeX.
