Business Objects Transportation Strategy

Hi,
We are trying to understand BO transportation methodologies like ways we can transport objects between DEV, QAS, and PRD environments. Can anybody provide documentation on BO transportation including SAP presentations as well?
Thanks,
Kris

Hi,
You can trnsfer the Business Objects conetent from one system to another with LCM (above BO XI 3.0) and Import Wizard (below BO XI 3.0).
[Import Wizard|http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/boexir3/en/xi3_bip_importwiz_en.pdf]

  • Business Objects vs. SAP Strategy Management

    Hi all,
I am new to this forum and would like to post a message regarding the recent news on SAP and Business Objects.
Business Objects has more than 6000 CPM customers and in then meantime we find many statements like http://www.gartner.com/DisplayDocument?id=530626 in the web
Since the announcement a couple of weeks have passed. My question is, if you have detailed analysis on how the Balanced Scorecard solution of both companies will differ respectively overlap. Are there any documents on that point available? And are there any consequences to be expected e.g. with respect to the price model?
    Thanks for your help,
    Alessandro

    Hi Alessandro,
I fully agree with Prakash's reply - at the moment Nenshad's comments represent the 'only version of the truth' regarding the BOBJ acquisition.
However, there is still a possibility to add some useful information on this as you are referring to a 'Balanced Scorecard' solution in general. As there are currently two sides to this equasion: SAP and BOBJ, for the SAP part we can be more specific:
SAP Strategy Management (SSM) based on the technology acquired with Pilot Systems Co. in February 2007 is the tool of choice for scorecarding in the <u>current</u> CPM portfolio of SAP (SAP's current CPM portfolio is based on the acquisitions of Outlooksoft, Pilot and the reseller agreement with Acorn). This reduces the complexity a little bit as you no longer have to contemplate which of SAP's own scorecarding solutions is the leading one <u>at the moment</u>. SEM-CPM Balanced Scorecard is retired - being put in maintenance mode - and all customers encouraged to move to Strategy Management, facilitated by a planned migration utility.
Shall you want to learn more about SAP Strategy Management, feel free to refer to my blog series (e.g. <a href="/people/karol.bliznak/blog/2007/09/12/one-blog-is-not-enough--how-to-manage-performance-management).

  • Transport strategy of BI-BO Objects

How to transport the BI-BO objects across the landscapes? I mean WEBI, DEKI, XCELCIUS, Crystal and all other BO reports
    created on BI Queries/Infoproviders.
Can we have BO reports saved along with our regular BEX Queries in BEX folders?
Can we publish BO reports in BI portal?
Plz help in understanding the transport strategy of BI-BO objects!!

If you're using XIR2 you have only one option - Import Wizard tool. If you are on Xi3.1 you have 2 options Import Wizard or LCM (Life Cycle Manager).
Documentation for both available at http://help.sap.com/businessobjects.
Can we have BO reports saved along with our regular BEX Queries in BEX folders?
    No
Can we publish BO reports in BI portal?
Yes, if you're using CR reports.

  • Best Strategy for Integrating Crystal/Business Objects with OpenACS Environment

    Post Author: devashanti
    CA Forum: Deployment
I'm working for a client that uses AOL server and OpenACS for their web services/applications. I need suggestions on the best strategy to integrate a reporting solution using Business Objects XI. Ideally I'd like to send an API call from our web application's GUI to the Crystal API with report parameter values to pass into specific reports called via the API - I can get it down to one integer value being passed - or if this is not possible a way to seamlessly, from the end user perspective, move into a reporting module. We are using an Oracle backend database. I'm experienced with creating stored procedures and packages for reporting purposes.
Although I have many years of experience integrating the Crystal active X controls into n-tier client server applications, the past few years I have had little opportunity to work with Business Objects and the newer versions of Crystal or web based solutions with Crystal Reports. I signed up to try out crystalreports.com, but I doubt my client will find this solution acceptable for security reasons as the reports are for an online invoicing system we are developing. However we can set up a reports server in-house if necessary, so it gives me some testing ground.
Can anyone provide suggestions for a doable strategy?

Please post this query to the Business Objects Enterprise Administration forum:
    BI Platform
That forum is monitored by qualified technicians and you will get a faster response there. Also, all BOE queries remain in one place and thus can be easily searched in one place.
    Thank you for your understanding,
    Ludek

  • Business Objects SAP Transports overwrite the BW 7.3 Upgrade Crystal Object

    Hello All,
We recently Upgraded our BW environment to 7.3 from 7.0 NW. And we also implemented BI 4.0 SP2, and as part of Integrating BI with BW put in 8 SAP transports which I have listed below. After the 7.3 upgrade to BW we were asked to put in SP5 and then the SPAU comes back with a conflict with one of the BI transports. After doing a compare it seems the CRYSTAL namespace is now part of 7.3 and these BI transports for SAP were created in 2005, so by putting these transports in (for BI to BW connectivity) we have overwrtten some 7.3 code?
My question is do we have a new set of transports for BI to BW 7.3 connectivity? I couldn't find any such in the installation guide or OSS notes for BI

Hi Paul, I opened a message with SAP under the BI area, and it has been routed to the BEX-BW team now. I would suggest open a message for the BEX-BW group since your Upgrade is getting stuck during Enhancement. Also talking to the BI folks on phone I got the impression that althoguht BW 7.3/7.0x have most of the objects in the standard SAP namespace they still want us to import the 8 or 9 transports as mentioned in the BI Guide. It feels that the SAP BW development and SAP BI development are not at the same page and causing these conflicts. Sorry couldn't be of much help to you.

  • Need toughts on approach. Client moving to Maconomy/Business Objects

    Post Author: klokhammer
    CA Forum: General Feedback
Hi.On of our important clients are most likely to migrate between economy systems within the next 9 months. Case as follows:
We have developed a budgeting/forecast and reporting system for a certain market/company. The solution is based on a Microsoft SQL 2000 database/server with Microsoft Access as application interface. The solution is integrated and gets actual figures from the economy system Aspect on a IBM iSeries (AS400) system. The "edge" of the system lies in sophisticated budgeting/forecast routines, the report module is rather poor....
The client is now most likely to migrate to Maconomy as the new economy system, and Maconomy AnalytiX as the new BI system (which I understand uses Business Objects.)
We are new to Business Objects and need general recommendations on what level we should try to integrate on. Should we "ditch" all the development done in Access and build a new solutions through Business Objects, keeping all the business logics, but not the interface?
Should we try to integrate on a database level, keeping the interface in Access (for budgeting/forecast), and exporting data into Business Objects to allow reporting through Maconomy AnalytiX?
As you most likely have understood, my knowledge about Business Objects are pretty poor. But please try to give me your thoughts on how we should move along, and what kind of "standard" considerations we must have in mind.
    Kind regardsklokhammer

    CA Forum: General Feedback
    klokhammer,
I checked out Macanomy's web site and searched for references to Business Objects, and sure enough it is mentioned here and there.  What it sounds like is that Macanomy has developed some "Macanomy Standard Reports" using BusObjects, so if you want these nifty Macanomy reports available to you, you buy the Macanomy product, which is bundled w/ BusObjects, and voila you have the reports.  It sounds like a winning strategy.  On the other hand, in order to get this type of capability, an organization would have to hire a staff to purchase and install Business Objects, then the staff would have to understand the financial database that the client has established and populated, and then the staff would have to set about building the reports that are needed.  With Macanomy, it seems that you get the whole kit and kaboodle in one swoop, which is good for an organization providing that it is on the same wave-length as Macanomy.  In regards to your question about what to do with your existing infrastructure, this is a call only you and your client can make.  In IT, it's always about the data and how it is used.  Peeling back the onion a bit, the process works like this:  in order for the Macanomy reports to work, the report must be properly built and it must read from a "universe", which is a BusObjects term for defining the interface between the user and the database (the meta data process).  In order for the universe to exist, it must be built by a "Universe Designer".   The Universe Designer must have an intracate knowledge of how every table in the database will be used to support the reports that the end-user wants to have (either pre-canned (standard) or ad hoc capability).  The database is still a critical piece, and reviewing the Macanomy offering I have a funny feeling that they come in with their own database structure and universe, which makes their process a much quicker install.  The downside, as it appears to me, is how you would migrate your existing data into the Macanomy structure (this goes back to the two parties being on the same wavelength).  I think in your case it's going to be a matter of ditching your database structure in MS SQL 2000 and Access, and adopting the Macanomy structure, but this may be more painful to do than any one at this point realizes.  It sounds like you need to continue arming yourself with knowledge before making any final decisions.  Good luck, and perhaps keep all of us posted on your experiences.

  • Step By Step Creation Of A new Business Object

    hi,
Please Give Me Details Of A Business Object, like step by step creation of a new business object and it's utilization.

    Create a business object (SWO1).
Give the business object name prefixed with Z_.
Enter the following fields with values:
    Object type:      Z_TESTXX
This is the internal technical key. Page: 1
Object type can have maximum 10 characters. This must be unique across all object type. Objects are specific instances of object types at runtime.
    Object name: Object_Name_for_XX
The object type is addressed with this name by external applications. This is a descriptive English name and can be up to 32 characters. This also must be unique across all object type.
    Name:      Object Name: XX
This is a meaningful name of the business object.
    Description:     Object Description: XX
    Page: 1
Object description, can be up to 40 characters.
    Program:      Z_TESTXX
Each object type has an ABAP/4 program in which methods of the object are implemented. This program is generated automatically when you create or revise an object type.
    Application: indicates cross application.
    3: Create an event.
Open the Object type in change mode. When you change your subtype the first step is to create a new event, this is done by selecting the Event node and clicking the create button. Give the event a name and a description.  Next set the status of this object type component to implemented.
    Event:          Z_EVENT_XX
    Name:          Event name: XX
    Description:     Event Description: XX
Click on the new event andu2026
Edit - Change Release Status- Object Type Component - Implemented
(A small box sign vanishes from the right side of the event, indicating that it is implemented)
There can be multiple triggering events for a standard/customer task.
In R/3 4.0 the release strategy for new Object Types and Object Type Components (methods, attributes, events, etc.) was enhanced.  Now when an object type and/or components are created, there are different statuses to select, based on its required purpose.  The statuses are:
u2022     Modeled - objects cannot be accessed at runtime.  This is the status that is automatically set when an object type or component is created.  Items with a modeled status cannot be referenced in any type of workflow task.
u2022     Implemented - objects can be used internally in a test environment.  They are accessible, but may not be stable (especially if no delegation has been defined).
u2022     Released - objects are ready for production. Note:  Local objects cannot be released.
u2022     Obsolete - objects are typically replaced by new functionality or incompatible with previous versions.   This status is optional.
    4: Create a method.
Next a method must be created without using any function module template. When creating the method ensure that the method call is synchronous - this means that the method doesn't require a terminating event.
A method can be synchronous or asynchronous. Synchronous Method
Method that, for the duration of its execution, assumes the process control and, after its execution, reports to the calling component (work item manager, in this case).
Synchronous methods can return the following data, if defined: Return parameters, one result and Exceptions.
Terminating events can also be defined for a single-step task described with a synchronous method. At runtime, the relevant work item is then terminated either when the synchronous method is successfully executed or when one of the defined terminating events occurs.
    Asynchronous Method
Method that, after its execution, does not report directly to the calling component (work item manager, in this case).
Asynchronous object methods do not return results, parameters or exceptions.
At least one terminating event must be defined for a single-step task described with an asynchronous object method.
At runtime, the relevant work item is only terminated if one of the defined terminating events occurs.
Next set the status of this object type component to implemented. The methods are not implemented unless you once open their program.  Select the method and open its program. It gives a message u201CDo you want to generate a template automatically for the missing sectionu201D. Click u201CYesu201D. Inside the program insert the code u201CCALL TRANSACTION u2018FB03u2019. Display Financial Document.
    Method:     Z_METHODXX
    Name:      Method name: XX
    Description:     Method Description: XX
Edit - Change Release Status - Object Type Component - Implemented
    5. Create Key fields.
Create key fields with ABAP dictionary field proposal.
It is the identifying key, via which the system can access a specific object, that is, an instance of the object type. The key fields of an object type are usually also the key fields in the table containing the header data for the object type. Only character-based data types are allowed as key fields. The total length allowed for all key fields is 70 characters. Each key field refers to a field in the ABAP Dictionary.
Enter u2018BKPFu2019 in table name field and select all the key fields. Press Continue button. Next set the status of these key fields to implemented.
Edit - Change Release Status -Object Type Component - Implemented
    6:Implement business object.
The whole business object needs to be implemented so click on the business object title andu2026
Edit - Change Release Status - Object Type - Implemented
Now you can check the syntax, generate the Business Object and then test it. Execute the custom method you created and give the Company code, Document number and Year.

  • Which business object to be used BUS2015 or BUS2009

    Hi Workflow gurus,
I have an issue in sending external mail when Purchase requisition is saved.
    Issue:
When purchase requisition is saved, I need to send an external mail to MS outlook of the approver. Here the issue is whether I should use the business object BUS2105 or BUS2009.
BUS2015 is for Overall release. BUS2009 is item-level release.  Since I need to send one mail to each approver based on item value.
Here I am using BUS2015 and get the line item details like price, purchase group and release code from the table and segregating items based on item value and release code.
Then sending one mail to each approver stating ‘You have PR … and line items 1, 3, … to approve’.
However our on-site people asking me to use the business object BUS2009, Please let me know am I doing correct or I should use business object BUS2009. If I have to use business object BUS2009 how should I sent the external mail to individual approver for multiple line items.
Your thoughts and ideas are appreciated.
    Regards

    Hi..
Check release strategy used for PR. If release strategy is configured for overall release of requisition, you can use BUS2105. (Check IMG > Materials Management > Purchasing > Purchase requisition > release procedure > set up procedure with classification > release groups. Check tick on overall release)
In case release strategy is configured as item level release, use objet BUS 2009.

  • Mapping in interconnect between different Business Objects

I want to know how to do transformation and mapping between different business objects in interconnects.
Always,We have a very complex SQL,when We do intergration
with Oracle interconnect ,We use DB Adapter or Jdbc Adapter, but the complex SQL have to be excuted in the resource DB or the destination DB which may be a big pressure to them ,I think can We use different Business Objects, and do the Mappings in interconnect,so the big pressure will be on the interconnect server just like the ETL tools, But I just find that Interconnect can do tranformation and mapping in one Business Object ,how can I do? Is anyone meet this problem like me ?thanks for discussion.

For me, Business Objects are logical groupings of business processes. For example, we have a Business Object called "Maintain_Employees". Under this we have 1 Procedure (Create_Employee) and 2 Events (Update_Employee and Delete_Employee).
We have 1 Oracle system interfacing with 23 other legacy systems. Some of these legacy systems will be using this "Maintain_Employees" Business Object (Common View), and our main transformations will be between the Common View and the legacy Application Views.
We are using a number of techniques to assist in "validating" data in the InterConnect. The main ones are using 'Cross Reference Tables (XREF)' and 'DatabaseOperation' transformations. By using 'Content Based Routing' we are able to send the right message to the right legacy system, and therefore do the right transformation/validation on the message payload. However, this is only a small part of a complex puzzle.
I also have the "problem" of having "very complex SQL" on our Oracle system too. This is not unusual when using the InterConnect.
To my mind, the InterConnect does 2 main operations. Firstly, it performs some message transformation (mapping), and secondly, it acts as a transportation engine (routing) using the adapters.
The remainder of the effort required to create or consume the message resides with the Applications themselves. Whether it is parsing an XML CLOB payload, inserting data into staging tables, writing to log files, pre-processing data, calling API's or something else, your Application side programming and processing overhead can get large.
The trade off it to ask the question, do I want to be able to track and manage messages from start to finish in high detail? Or can I trust that all message payload data will be consumed with no additional processing on the Application side?
My experience has shown that the bottleneck is always at the Application side, and almost never in the InterConnect.
The short answer to your first question is "You are right. Mappings can take place only between Application Views and Common Views only - not between Business Objects.".
To answer your second question "Probably everyone reading this forum has this problem. The intelligence that is able to really interpret message data, validate it and process it is only found in the Application, not the InterConnect. You could, however, use the Workflow engine within OAI in order to provide additional pre-validation, human interaction and logic, but this too could be complex."
At my current client, we are architecting an Application OAI Message handling schema. This will contain staging tables, pre-processing tables, "OAI" wrapper PL/SQL scripts, "APPS" wrapper PL/SQL scripts and Message Logging and Exception tables. Ours will be a complex set of PL/SQL processes too.
I hope this helps, just in letting you know that you are not alone with this problem.
I wonder if anyone else would like to share how they have architected their InterConnect and Application side mapping and transformation solutions.

  • Business Objects Resource Requirements

I have a Business Objects Deployment questions. We are on SAP BI 7.0 & ECC6.0.
We have a specific business need where users want to have a adhoc reporting tool where they can do OLAP reporting on data from BW, SAP ECC/R3 and their local Excel/database files.
In order to cater that we are planning to use BO for our adhoc reporting needs and BO proposed their Web intelligence product for adhoc reporting.
I need to verify the no of additional resources(for budgeting purposes) needed to maintain BO?
BO told us that we don't need any as once the deployment is done and universes have been setup(for that we will hire a consulting company) we don't need any resources. We think they are over simplifying it. I want to know what are the daily maintenance/operation tasks, Enhancements, SAP Basis tasks required in BO. Will it possible for a single resources to handle BW & BO, giving 50% of his time to each or 75-25% respectively?
I know the requirement is quite vague but your opinion or any additional info/links will be appreciated.

    Mark,
Based on my data warehouse experience, Business Objects environment continues to evolve. So, you may want to consider one full time resource for long term. You can also have one of your full time resources trained by the consultants you bring in. Just my two cents.
In medium to big deployments there are different Business Obejcts roles.
Business Objects Architect --> Sizing, Strategy, licensing etc.
Business Objects Administrator --> general admin, troubleshooting, security infrastructure and maintenance etc.
Business Objects developer(s) --> universe design, report design etc.
Since your deployment is not that big, I can see that initially one person can handle it. If you like, you can handle it all yourself. Of course it will be slow in the beginning, but keep in mind that data warehouse environments tend to grow and before you know you'll be occupied. After all it is about ad-hoc reporting and not canned reporting.
    I hope this helps.

  • Business Objects In Portal Content Studio

    Hi All,
I Installed a business package for CRM in EP 6.0 SP09 and I created aliases SAP_BW and SAP_CRM for the CRM and BW systems and assigned roles to users and was accessing them.
The Business Objects Folder in Portal content studio was empty even after the installation of BP, but Later when I checked that I found a Folder "SAP_BW"  under "Business Objects" Folder. I just want to know how did these objects come there and how
Could someone please clarify this to me.
    Thank you

    Hi Ignacio,
Should they be transported manually to the QA system or will they again be created automatically when I start accessing these BW iviews in QA system.
will it save me the loading time of a template if I transport this business objects folder to QA system by creating a transport package.
    Thank you
    Shiva
