Business use and business licences (family packs??)

I posted this in the .mac communication forum, too, so hope that's okay and not going to cause any confusion. Would have posted it in a general topic but couldn't find one. Would be nice to have a topic for small businesses and/or creative/professional businesses. Anyway, the other thread is here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1085712
I am somewhat surprised that Apple isn't putting more emphasis on small businesses in terms of where they are pitching their software. I don't know about the rest of the world but it seems like more and more small businesses (and certainly those in the creative industry) are switching to Macs.
So why does Apple not allow .mac to be used for business use and why does Apple only have "family packs"? I would love to get iWork for my staff (four licences) and a collecting team licence for .mac (family licence?)....
.mac could be perfect for business use and in-house/client collaboration but for some reason it seams Apple just isn't thinking of those possibilities. With web applications like Basecamp, Highrise, Connector etc and desktop programs like DayLite, there is clearly a huge market for these services and Apple is well on the way to having one of the best systems there but for some reason they won't extend it slightly to make it work for business.
Any takes on this?
Cheers,
Galen

Apple does offer volume licensing for businesses. I'm not sure if this link will "time out." Here is the path I took to get to that page: Apple.com > Store tab > link under More Stores Business on the right-hand side of the page > Volume licensing under Business Solutions, again on the right-hand side of the page. The list is alphabetical.

  • Using iWeb with MobileMe family pack

I just upgraded to the family pack for mobile me. I had been using it for my homepage, but now I'd like to make a homepage for my son, and my wife wants to make a homepage as well.
How is this handled in iWeb? I don't see a way to tell it where to publish which site when I add a new site.
What is the easiest way to handle multiple mobile me websites on one mac?
    Thanks.

Not having used the sharing option since there's only one user on my Mac, I don't know the ins and outs of what you want to do. Terence Develin might. If you want to share the library with all users and have them be able to access the library, import new file and perform edits then the best solution is to put the library on an external HD whose ownership has been set to off. This Apple document explains the process: iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users.
The drive can also be used to backup other files as well.

  • What to do with Macbook running 10.4 (I have 10.5.6 and 10.8 family packs)?

My wife's Intel Macbook is still running Tiger and I have since bought a 10.5.6 family pack which I was intending to install. I also just received the 10.6 family pack to upgrade my iMac and her macbook as well.
I've been reading that you can install Snow Leopard from Tiger without upgrading to Leopard first. I could do that since I have all the legitimate copies on hand, but to save time can I just upgrade her laptop directly to Snow Leopard? Thanks.

Yes, you can skip the Leopard install and go directly from Tiger to Snow Leopard. As always, make a backup of your computer first.

  • Install failure due to "faulty DVD" problem: only with Family Pack?

After going through a few threads on the subject of installation failure due to tbe pseudo-faulty DVD, I have the impression that many users mention that they were using a Family Pack install DVD or in one case a "drop in". The former is my case. Please post if you have had this problem with Leopard install, and whether you were using a single licence, family pack or drop in. It's just a hunch, but perhaps this problem only affects a specific set of disks.

I believe that they are holding back on sending a new DVD until they know why there were defective ones. I read somewhere that they require a new SKU so that they will actually be a separate batch.
Can you borrow a DVD from anyone to install Leopard? You certainly would be allowed to legally do that. I am surmising that Apple is overloaded with requests for a replacement DVD and really want to make sure it works. You know that old thing about "fool me once..."
Stuff happens - but with Leopard, a lot of stuff sure happened at once. They sold 2 million DVDs. If only 5% have problems, that's a lot of problems to deal with, one at a time.
In time it will sort itself out, but in the meantime the rooms are full of smoke

  • ARD Family Pack would be a business opportunity for Apple

Apple Remote Desktop for 10 managed systems cost 299 USD. It can be considered cheap for companies that have remote locations and need for remote support. But for a family that is too high cost.
Often Apple offers 5 licence family packs for more affordable 59 or 79 USD. ARD Family Packs would be a real business opportunity for Apple, not to gain money for selling ARD licences but to boost the sales of Apple computers.
Here is an example. I have Macs at home, my sister and parents live far away in different countries and they do not want to switch to Macs only because they can not get help from anyone (they know and who speaks their language) in the case of any technical or usability problems.
BUT I could maintain the computer for them and help them to use it more and better, IF there is an affordable ARD Family Pack available. Without that I can not convince them to switch to Macs. And that would count for 2 new computer sales for Apple. And the same applies to my wife's sisters and parents. Another 2 computers. And later their friends would switch...
Does Apple have ARD for less than ten managed systems?
Is there another (better?) way to manage 5 or so systems?
Will Leopard bring any change to the high cost of managing less than 10 systems?

Probably 90% (if not more) of the people who want to be to help their friends and relatives with their computers only need the ability to view and take control of the client computer remotely. For those people, ARD, even a "family pack" would be overkill. If all you need is to be able to control another computer, then look into the freeware VNC. That will give you control capabilities and not cost you anything. You can find VNC applications for Mac here. Most people seem to find Chicken of the VNC works well for them.

  • Family Pack use in a company?

Are there any license restrictions regarding the use of the iWork Family Pack?
Some software has a "commercial use" clause preventing the use in a corporate environment, does iWork have anything like this regarding the family pack.
    So...
Can I buy the family pack & use it for example on 5 computers in a small company?
Other licences prevent installation on more than 1 premesis.
    So...
Can I install on 3 computers at the office & 2 at home?
and lastly where can I get a copy of the license agreement?
    Thanks

OK, found the license, all questions are answered in one neat paragraph:
    B. iWork Family Pack License. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on up to a maximum of five (5) Apple-
labeled computers at a time as long as those computers are located in the same household and used by persons who occupy that same
household. By "household" we mean a person or persons sharing the same housing unit such as a home, apartment, mobile home or
condominium. This license does not extend to students who reside at a separate on-campus location or to business or commercial users. You
may not make the Apple Software available over a network.

  • Doubt about Rollup Patches and Family Packs

    Hi All,
What is the difference between Rollup patches and family packs? And also applying family packs will increase the codelvel? Please specify the naming convention of both the pacthes also.
    Thanks
    Rajasekar

Thanks Kashif M &Hussein for your valuable replies.I've read the links. As per the documennt in r12.
Product family release update pack (product family RUP)     An aggregation of patches on a given codeline created for all products in specific product family for a specific point release. For example, R12.FIN_PF.A.1.
Release update pack (RUP)     A cumulative aggregation of product family release update packs on a given codeline created across Oracle E-Business Suite after the initial release. For example, 12.1.1.
RUP in r12 is similar to family pack(11i) which will change the third digit (12.1.1 to 12.1.2).right?
Product family release update pack(family pack) with new features called rollup patch?
    (or)
About rollup patch I read in one apps dba blog
Rollup patces are usually fixes of all issues popped up because of a particular minipack/familypack or maintenance pack. Lets assume you applied a family pack & because of that some issue/bug came into picture or all bugs reported soon after family pack or maintenance pack are fixed and released as Roll Up patch . These are usually denoted as roll up 1 rollup 2 or roll up A roll up B.
So you will see maintenance pack 10 (11.5.10) roll up 1 or roll up2.
How can we identify the roll up level?
    Thanks

  • Syncing 2 iphones with Mobileme account and family pack account

I can't seem to get this answered.. I have a .mac (mobileme) account and I just upgraded the account to the family plan which give me 4 additional accounts. I am trying to sync the second email account up with my ical and contacts and I can't figure out how to accomplish this. The ical and contacts are under my email and not the family pack email. I would like to know how you share ical and contacts with multiple iphones..........

Probably, but that would result in much logging in and out as we both access the home computer many times in one day. Also, I find that Windows XP slows down a bit with multiple accounts. (Still haven't upgraded to Mac yet... It's coming!) I'll give it a shot when I get home and see if it works. Thank you.
Does anyone else have any experience with this setup?

  • Upgrading to OS X 10.5 with Family Packs

I would like to update my old PowerPMacs and my Intel iMac to OS X 10.5 Leopard on the following computers:
    eMac 700Mhz running 10.3.9
    12in Powerbook 867Mhz running 10.3.9
    15in Powerbook 1.67Ghz running 10.4.11
20i Intel iMac 2 Ghz CoreDuo running 10.4.11
I know it might be impossible to actually get hold of Leopard nowadays, my eMac and 12inch Powerbook might struggle to run Leopard, and I will want to upgrade the iMac further, but my main question is this. If I see a 'used' copy of a Family Pack for`Leopard, say on eBay, is it safe to buy? Or if it says it has been used on two computers, will I only be able to install it on three of my own?
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. The older Macs are running things like Youtube slowly at low res, and Flash video sites are a pain. Plus the 15in Powerbook keeps looking for plugin updates on everything. I know upgrading to Leopard is as far as I can go on the PowerPc Macs, but as the computers can still be used, I would like to get them running as best as possible, even if this circumstance will obviously reoccur as time goes on.
    Mark

I wonder if there would be any point trying to get a Family pack for 10.4 Tiger for the eMac and 12inch Powerbook! lol
I wouldn't think so. Installing Tiger is not going to rejuvenate them.
Is there a link tro the various types of OS X upgrades? I should be trying to get discs that are black with the large'X' across the full disc, correct? The grey discs that come with your Macs are not the ones to get (Install/Recovery)?
Correct, the grey disks are model specfic and they may not load.
The following shows retail disks OS 10.1 10.2 10.3
    -----------------------------  10.4 10.5 10.6
The point to consider is the last one, Snow Leopard (for your intel) was until recently, availble for only $30. It may still be possible to order one if you ring an Apple store.

  • Family Pack Snow Leopard

I have a question about Snow Leopard. I have two Macbooks in my home and bought the Family Pack snow leopard. Now, I have installed it on a newer Macbook However on my really old Macbook it says it is unable to install because it in not "intel based mac". Now, my question is... is there anyway to install it on the old macbook??

You should be able to install it on your old MacBook, all macbook's were Intel, only iBook's come with PowerPC (they only support leopard, not snow leopard.) Snow leopard may have a problem, if it was the first kind of macbook, with the 1-core processor, they put 2-core processors in about a year after the macbook came out. Having said that, though, my friends Macbook with 1 core just had snow leopard installed on it no problem.

  • Family pack in a business

I need to know if my company can legally purchase 8 family packs for our 40 macs to upgrade to snow leopard or if we need purchase the 40 copies at $29. I would like to save the company the money but if it is not legal then we don't have a problem with buying all 40 copies.

    Not legit.
It's meant for family - home use only.
    About the Family Pack
The Family Pack Software License Agreement allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple software on up to a maximum of five (5) Apple-labeled computers at a time as long as those computers are located in the same household and used by persons who occupy that household. By “household” we mean a person or persons who share the same housing unit such as a home, apartment, mobile home, or condominium, including students who are primary residents of that household but reside at a separate on-campus location. This license does not extend to business or commercial users.

  • How can I tell if my software licence is a Family Pack or Single use?

I need to work out which licence I have as my daughter has a Mac Book.  Her school provided her with iWork but take it off when she leaves in a month or so.  If I have the Family Pack I can load Pages, Keynote etc, but not if I only have Single use.

If you still have the box or electronic receipt you could call your closest Apple Store and give them the serial # or model # and they can check it. Do you remember what you paid? Also, there are no longer any Family Packs with Lion, but I see your sig says Snow Leopard.

  • Powershell to classify files ( confidential, highly confidential, Business use, and Public ) and encrypt it for confidential & highly confidential types.

    Hello Experts  !!
I am wondering if PowerShell can be used to classify files (  confidential, highly confidential, Business use, and Public ) and encrypt it for confidential & highly confidential types.
I found some material for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 8.1 but that doesn't seem convincing. I need it for Xp and Windows 7.
    Thanks !

You may want to consider using FCI (File Classification Infrastructure) in Server 2012 R2. You will need FSRM (File Server Resource Manager), AD RMS (Active Directory Management Services), AD CS (Active Directory Certificate Services, and DAS (Dynamic Access
Control). You will also need a 2012 level forest and domain, and KDC support for claims, compound authentication, and Kerberos armoring.
Microsoft has already developed the software foundation to do exactly what you're looking for at an enterprise scale. It may be easier to implement it, instead of reinventing the wheel..
