Business View Or Universe

Is it true that Business View will be exluded from the Crystal soon? I have heard this but I am not too sure about it.........
ST

Hi Sunil,
Business Views is a flexible and reliable multi-tier system that enables companies to build detailed and specific Business Views objects that help report designers and end users access the information they require.
Currently the BVM is a part of Business Objects Enterprise XI and XI R2 and Crystal Reports Server XI and XIR2. Moreover itu2019s also a part of the latest release i.e. Business Objects Enterprise XI R3.
As of now there is nothing mentioned about this and currently it is available in the latest release i.e. Business Objects Enterprise XI R3.
I hope this information helps you.

  • Crystal Reports-Universe and Business Views. Pros & cons. BVs to Universe

    Hi Gurus,
We have around 500 + Crystal Reports developed on top of Business Views, Stored Procedures, Command Objects and some directly connected to the tables. No Universes are there in our current environment and all reports undergo frequent changes.
We are planning to replace Business Views with Universe and use them as data provider for existing Crystal Reports and also planning to do some ad-hoc reporting using Web-Intelligence. I have expertise in developing both Crystal Reports and Web Intelligence reports. But I never designed any complex Crystal Reports against Universe / Business Views.  I heard that there are several issues with Crystal against Universe (e.g.: Cascading Prompts, LOVs, Row Level Security etc...) Most of our Crystal Reports have several sub-reports and some dynamic cascading parameters.
We currently have not finalized any tool. Some are advising not to disturb the current environment and some say migrating to Universe is a good option because Business View manager tool is going to be trashed in few years.  My personal view is to used both Crystal and Web-I and replace Business Views with Universe because we can use it for both Crystal and Web-I.
Can you please post your views on this?
Also, please post the issues (& solutions) you got with Crystal Reports against Universe. Also advantages and disadvantages of using Universe over Business Views.
Environment: Business Objects XI R2 and Crystal Reports XI R2
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Many thanks,
    Shamanth.

    Hello,
you can find an article about Crystal Reports on Universe here:
    http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/boc/index?rid=/library/uuid/20984c2b-17f1-2b10-1091-d18977f7cd8f
As you said, an important item to consider is reusability: if you want to reuse your work between Crystal and WebI then you have to go with Universes.  If you are ok in keeping the two in separate worlds then Business Views can still bring a lot of value to CR.  Business views will stay in the market still for a long time (in mainteinance, so don't expect new features).
Looking at the future, we expect that In the long term, business views will be replaced by universes. Keeping this in mind, a migration of a report from an 'older' version of a universe to a new one will probably go smoother than a migration from a business view to a universe.
    Hope that it helps

  • Crystal Report with Universe instead of Business Views: Any limitations ?

    Hi,
We were using Crystal Reports on top of Business Views  until now. Due to considerable post-migration work with Crystal Reports on top of Business Views we are thinking of switching to Crystal Reports  on top of Universe.
Can anybody explain me whether there is any drawback while using *Universe with Crystal Reports* instead of Business Views with Crystal Reports.
Please consider the following pointswhile giving an evaluation -
       Dynamic parameter
    (ii)  LOV creation and maintainence
    (iii) Maintaining order of parameters
(iv) Updating Universe/Business View level changes in Report (Verify database)
    (v) Report performance
    Your advice/views is appreciated.
    Regards,
    Neonevin

    Here are my views..
Yes, you can create crystal reports on top of universes. But there is one major drawback using universe. You can connect to only one database at a time. But in Business View you can connect to multiple databases. If you are ok with this, you can absolutely go for universes.
Dynamic parameter  --- Yes its possible
(ii) LOV creation and maintainence  --- Whatever the LOVs you  have in universe, you can use the same. And also you can use LOVs created in Business Views  while creating reports on top of universes. Any how please check. not very sure about it.
(iii) Maintaining order of parameters --- Yes, the order of parameters can be managerd using universe designer itself.
(iv) Updating Universe/Business View level changes in Report (Verify database) -- No need of updates required to be done in report. There are few changes which can happen for universe. Seemlessly you don't need to do anything to reports. Unless you delete some objects in universe.
    (v) Report performance -- Never checked in this perspective. Performance should be fine.

  • Resolving loops in Business Views

    Hi,
I created a data foundation. I have many fact tables and dimension tables.
In Universe design, we have Aliases and Contexts to solve loops.
Can we created contexts in Business Views to resolve loops? Or do we have any similar mechanism in Business views?
How do we solve loops in such scenario?
    Thank you,
    Regards,
    Gowtham Sen.

    Hi Sourashree,
    Thank you for your reply.
I have gone through the document and e-learning course provided by SAP Business Objects. But in both the documents, I didn't find any details regarding solving loops among tables.
    Thank you,
    Regards,
    Gowtham Sen.

  • Converting from a Business View connection to a non-Business View connectio

I have a report on our Crystal Reports Server that I need to move to a machine with Crystal Reports XI installed and no connection to the Business Objects Server.
When I create an ODBC connection pointing to the same table and then try to use Set Datasource Location to Update the Data Source I get an errormessage:
Converting from a Business View connection to a non-Business View connection is not supported.
What can I do? It is a complex report that I don't want to take the time and energy to rewrite.
    Thank You for any answers.

    Hello Brundibar,
I recommend to post this query to the [Universe Designer and Business Views Designer|Semantic Layer; forum.
This forum is dedicated to topics related to the universes and business views.
It is monitored by qualified technicians and you will get a faster response there.
Also, all Universe Designer and Business Views Designer queries remain in one place and thus can be easily searched in one place.

  • How to Convert Crystal Enterprise v10.0 Business Views to BOE XI?

    Hi,
It took a long time, but my company FINALLY upgraded from Crystal Enterpise and Crystal Reports v10.0.  We just purchased BusinessObjects Edge XI and Crystal Reports 2011.  I went to the training class a few months ago, but due to the delay in our actually getting the applications, I feel as though I've forgotten most of what I was taught!
With the old version, we built all our reports off Business Views (using Business View Manager - which was an add-on component of Crystal Enterprise) that are sourced from an Oracle database.  I have over 420 report files that are built against these business views.
I have tried to open a report in Crystal Reports 2011, and I'm prompted to log in to BusinessObjects Enterprise to load the business view.  When I enter the credentials for the NEW system that I just installed (a brand new install on a new server), I get an error "Access Denied:  You cannot log into an older version of the CMS."  So obviously the stored business views that are trying to load have the old system information associated with them.  Understandable.
I cannot find Business View Manager in the new BOE XI.  Is it an add-on?  Where can I get it?  Can I even convert my old business views?  If not, am I going to have to rebuild all my data sources?
I don't know what a "Universe" is - and I've never used them - but is that similar to a Business View?
The problem I get is that if I try to associate a new data source (I tried direct Oracle connection), all the fields in my report disappear when the old (unloadable) business view is removed.  Essentially this would require me to rebuild all my reports!
I'm not sure what to do here.  I have 420+ reports to convert so we can load them on this new server, and I have only about 2 weeks to do it.  If I have to rebuild them all, there is no way I can complete this in time for our cutover.
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!  (I'm new to this "forum" thing, too - so if I'm not doing this right or if there is some other place I should be putting this, please let me know)
    Thanks,
    Amber Smith

    Hi Amber,
    Thank you for the reply.
Well if you can logon to Business Objects Server then you can see the Business View Manager from Start menu-> All Programs-> Business Objects Enterprise XI 3.1-> Business View Manager
or else you can look for business view manager executable file in c:\program files\business objects\business objects enterprise 12.0\win32_x86\CrystalBVM.exe
When you open Crystal reports, there is an option to change the datasource of an existing report to any other datasource. The only condition that should be met is that the structure of new datasource should be similar to the existing one.
I have not changed the business view datasource to universe, but i will try it and let you know.
    Thanks,

  • Recreation of Info-Views as Business Views

    Hello,
We have been running reports on Crystal 7 (Seagate Info 7) and have installed BOXI R2 and managed to migrate the reports to Crystal XI.  Just not sure if we have done this in the most effective way and if issues can arise from how we have set up the data sources.
There was no direct migration tool to bring the reports onto the new system.  Moreover, we work on a Baan IV database and have had some issues trying to use the Universe Module and so have are using Business Views.
The old reports were using info-views, we recreated the these info-views as business views on BOXI.  In doing so, we made a data foundation including all tables and links as to accommodate for the tables needed by the all of the info views.  From there, we created appropriate business elements, specifying the fields used.  And finally, the respective business views.  By changing the datasource (Database -> Set datasource location) we were able to use the same reports as before but through the business views.
We put all of the tables and linked them inside of the same data foundation.  We figured the benefit was that in the case we needed to create new business views that we would have access to any table we wanted.  So the question is, does this lower the performance (take longer to run reports) or possibly cause problems with data integrity?  Should we have migrated the reports another way?

I am configuring the SNC settings now.
    BI is 64 bit
Bobj is 32 bit non IA server.
During this process I need to install Win 32 bit sap crypto lib in my system. After that there are profile settings in BI which need to be made which conflict with the existing SSO configuration:
    Current settings in default profile:
    snc/identity/asp:SAPServiceDB1@domain name snc/gssapi_lib        C:\WINDOWS\ime(x86)\gx64krb5.dll
New parameters to be created in the instance profile as described in the BOBJ documentation:
    snc/identity/asp:CN=DB1, OU=SAP, O=domain name, C=US
          snc/gssapi_lib E:\usr\sap\DB1\SYS\exe\run\sapcrypto.dll
The main issue with be the library dll.
    One more thing.
The SAP crypto library nees to be installed on the SAP server (64bit) and the BOBJ server (32bit).  I was unable to locate a 32bit version for Windows x86.  There is a x86/IA32 version but unknown if this is
    compatible.
The IA32 reference is usually specific to itanium servers which we do not have.
    Please advice.
    Thank you,
    Padman

  • Advantages of Business View Manager

Is there anything we can't do using commnad objects/ direct ODBC connection and that we can do with Business Views?
I want to know what are the advantages of using BVM in a large environment..

    Hello,
you can create a Universe on top of multiple data sources using Data Federator (the various sources will be then mapped by Data Federator in a single virtual source to which you will connect with Universe Designer).
In general, Business Views are not going to be enhanced, our strategy is moving towards Universes which will take over some of the Business Views features.
When you have to choose your architecture, keep in mind that BVs are mainly for Crystal Reports, if in the future you want to add other SAP BusinessObjects tools in your system (Web Intelligence, Explorer,...) they will not be using BV but Universes.
This said, if your project is well defined, you can foresee its evolution and BVs give you complete satisfatcion you shold still consider them, they will be supported still for a long time.
    Hope that it helps

  • Possible to change the datasource from a business-view to a Sql Command ?

    Hello,
When a business view contains a lot of elements it takes a while just to open the report.
We'd like to keep the BV as the dictionnary, but,
    once the report design completed,
we'd like to disconnect the business view and replace it by the Sql command which can be seen in the menu option 'show SQL query'.
Is it possible via the RAS sdk ?
    Did somebody experience this ?
    How to proceed ?
    Thanks a lot
    Alain

    Hi Ted,
I'm thinking opening a Case for this problem of opening reports based on a big BV.
We can't really reduce the BV, since it is the dictionnary and we need the whole thing...
I'm wondering why it is impossible to change the Datasource if the tables and fields underneath are identical.
Is it impossible to change the fields' mapping ?
The other solution, as you suggest, is to create a report from scratch, create a new Datasource with the Sql command format, and rebuild the report... I agree it looks like a big job...
Do you know if it is possible to export the report in XML for instance, change the XML, and then re-import ?
    Thanks for your Help.

  • Can we get data from business views  in CR 2008/XI?

    Hi All,
Can we get data from business views  in CR 2008/XI?
If its possible, pls let us know how to get connect with Business View in both of these versions and what is the tool that we have to use to create Business Views.
    Thank you,
    Krishna Pingali

    Hi Krishna,
Crystal Reports/BusinessObjects Enterprise ( BOE ) Business Views can only be created using the BV build which comes with BOE and installed using the Work Station installer for BOE. for both XI and 2008.
You cannot mix these two versions on the same PC not can one talk to the other, the BV designer must match the same version as BOE. XI ( version 11.0 ) is no longer available but if you mean XI R2 ( version 11.5 ) then it still is.
It's not completely clear which Business View you are referring to? BOE has a Business View Designer so not sure if this is just a naming problem or not? If you are referring to the BOE Business View Designer then the above is true. If your reference is about some other BV designer or data source then you need to clarify.
Contact our Sales department for pricing and availability.
    Thank you

  • Regarding LOV's in Crystal Reports- Business View

    Post Author: crystalappu
    CA Forum: General
Hi All, I have developed a Business View for our crystal reports, We have like two levels of cascading prompting. In which the user can select ALL option in drop down LOV's in second level. I have added an 'all' object using command object in Business View. But when my Crystal report Developer is accesing my LOV prompt Group he is unable to see ALL in drop down LOV. But when i browse field in my command object i can see my 'ALL' object in it. Any idea upon this?

Perhaps you should post an example or explain using technical information how you added this command object?
Did you use a UNION ALL?

  • Passing Value from Crystal Report (special function) to Business View parameter

    Friends,
Í have a scenario where i need to pass value from Crystal Report to a Business view's parameter.
Eg : CurrentCEUsername (func in crystal report)-- gives login user  which i should pass to parameter in a Business view (used in the same report).
Will be able to explain more if required.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Bharath

I guess you got the picture wrong.  User_id is not a report_level parameter .
In Data Foundation, below query is used..
    select Acc_Number, Account_Group,User_id  from Accounts where user_id={?User_id}
where in {?User_id}  is the BV parameter...
The Filter was a solution. But it takes long time to Query all the data from DB and then filter at BV level.
    How do i pass the CurrentCEUsername to {?User_id}
Value should ve CurrentCEusername always. so that query will be
    select Acc_Number, Account_Group,User_id  from Accounts where user_id=CurrentCEusername
It will restrict the data pulled from DB to BV .. right?

  • Failed to open the connection error using Business View OLE DB

I have a Crystal Report built on a Business View with the db being accessed by an OLE driver.  Everything works fine using Crystal Designer, but when I try to access it through BOE I get the "Failed to open the connection" error.  I have the ole drivers installed on the server.
    We are on BOE 12.1.0.
    The db is IBM as400.
    Suggestions??

Ok so I spent the day trying to find the differences between the working and the non-working application. I began by adding code one piece at a time to the working application. The goal was to try and get it to break on the deployment server. I found the lines of code that is causing the break on the deployment server. Here it is:
        private void setReportParameters()
            try
                crystalReportDocument.SetParameterValue(0, reportUserName.Value);
                crystalReportDocument.SetParameterValue(1, reportArea.Value);
                crystalReportDocument.SetParameterValue(2, reportCDR.SelectedValue);
                crystalReportDocument.SetParameterValue(3, reportStatus.Value);
            catch (Exception ex)
                throw ex;
This sub-routine is called from my button click code and is used to set the parameters for the report. Once I added this to the working application it broke also. My goal here is to send the parameters to the report from a form the user is filling out. Please keep in mind this code works in Visual Studio 2005 and my local IIS server running on my development machine. It breaks on the target deployment server
The code broke on reports with sub-reports as well as report with no sub-reports. As soon as it was added and deployed the application through the "Failed to open the connection" error.
    Thoughts?

  • How to update db server connection for objects in business view

I had to migrate to a new SQL server for my main user database (sql 2008)
crystal itself is fine, and I have updated all of the reports to use a different connection string.
but I had forgotton about the dynamic dropdownlists in business view..
what is the best way to update the connection for those ??
I will go through each one manually if I have to.. but was hoping for something a little easier
    thanks for any help !

    Hi
Open the config.cfg and then change the JdbcPasswordEncoding=Intradoc to JdbcPasswordEncoding=ClearText and then enter the new password in JdcPassword=<new passwd> . Save the file and then restart the CS. It should get going from there.

  • Multi pass bursting of a Crystal report on business view with a bex query

In BO CMC, we have a group with a list of user.
The idea is to burst (via the multi pass bursting method) a Crystal report for this list of user with the constraint that this report should only contains data of the store linked to the user.
Our data comes from a SAP BI cube.
The link between a Store and a User comes from an other system.
We have build a bex query and use it as a data source of a Crystal Data Foundation.
In this Data Foundation we have an other table storing the user ID and the Store ID.
These 2 tables are linked in this Data Foundation on the Store ID.
Business element and Business View have also been created on top of this Data Foundation.
We have impletemented a filter in this Data Foundation to filter out data on the user id. This user id will be filled when bursting the report for all requested users thanks to this function :.
As a user is linked to one store, the data foundation will filter the data coming from the bex query and show only the data of the user's store.
We have build a crystal report using the business view created above as data source. We have made some test on a small amount of data and it works, data are correctly filter out and the reports shows only the data from one store.
But the problem is that we have a lot of stores (more than 600) and doing this way implies that the bex query will always return the data for all the stores as the filter will occurs in the data foundation and not on the bex query.
We need to find a way to make the bex query returning only the data of the store linked to the user for which we burst the report.
As we have more than 600 stores this was an idea to avoid managing more than 600 under BO groups or more than 600 different filters.
This solution do not work when the bex query result set is too large.
Does anyone has an idea on how to implement such "dynamic" filter in the bex query? The parameter is the user ID but the filter to be applied on the bex query is on the store ID.
We are under BO XI release 2, Crystal XI Release 2 and we have installed the BO release 2 integration kit for SAP
