Button highlight colors in layered menu

Hello all,
I am wraspping up a dvd project and just have one small issue. I have a layered menu here with an overlay layer that contains noting but a white background and a few little black boxes for showing up when a button is selected. When a button is selected, I want those boxes to black, and when activated i want it to turn gray, but as it is now when a button is selected those boxes are white, and when activated they turn yellow. Ive messed around some in the colors tab of the buttons, but as of yet have been unable to figure it out. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

You're welcome, k chen, but be careful. Some clients are very picky about fonts.
The layered menu method lets you basically use any graphic element you want, which can then be replaced with any other graphical element, of the same relative size, for the selected and activated states. So, for example a blue frowny face can be replaced with a multicolored happy face. Or, more specifically to your project, a nonstandard font can change colors. But, you lose reliability, player compatibility, and responsiveness, not to mention audio and video motion background capability.
An overlay menu, which is the standard for commercially produced dvds, is best used to add a graphic element to your menu, rather than replace or alter one that's already there, e.g. an arrow that appears next to a menu item to show that it's selected. What you lose in graphical flexibility, you gain in performance speed, reliability, compatibility. And you can have a video background and audio.
That's why overlay menus are the industry standard.

  • Button Highlight Color

    I'm sorry, I know I should understand this by now, but could someone please explain to me why I can't just create red, blue and yellow buttons in Photoshop, then import them and assign them colors in DVDSP? Am I not picking exactly the right red, blue, or yellow?
    I have tried creating new fill layers that are all black, I have tried creating shapes that are red and blue. I can't seem to do it. I select the shape in the viewer, then use the inspector and the "Colors" tab to try assigning different colors for red and blue, or even just plain black. Does anyone have an idiot's guide they could suggest? I need it.

    Thanks Drew. I saw that link on another post, but it doesn't seem to work for me. I did manage to make a shape with the 4 layers in photoshop, and assign a highlight to that as a button (using this link http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/shapes_droptemplates.html), but I'm still working on using it to create a highlight with a feathered edge to simulate the highlight.
    I do appreciate your help,

  • Is there a way to change the highlight color for buttons?

    I swear, iDVD has got to be the most counter-intuitive program Apple has made in recent memory. I'm a huge Apple fan but this program makes me want to throw my computer at the freaking wall.
    All I want to do is change the ugly yellow highlight color of the buttons (which appears when you select them) in the DVD menu. I'm making a wedding video, and the DVD menu is all silver, gray, black and white, so the yellow color that it defaults to looks hideous.
    Any help is appreciated!

    Good day Glenn,
    You may want to consider upgrading from Acrobat 9.5 Standard to Acrobat X Pro.  Acrobat X Professional has the redaction tool which is really easy to use.
    You could also accomplish the workflow you described in your question.  If you right-click the tool-bar, and enable the Properties Bar, you can change the color of your highlighter tool to black.  Then you can 'highlight' the text you would like to eliminate.  After you're done, print the document to the Adobe PDF printer with 'Document and Markup' selected under the 'Comments and Forms' drop-down menu to 'refry' your PDF.
    Hope this helps!
    Kind regards,

  • Menu  button Highlight

    Can't seem to figure out how to control colors for "hover" , "active" and "activated" on buttons. I created menu PS first then imported as menu and converted buttons. But Edit Menu Colors seems to have no affect. And my DVDs are coming out with no way to "see" the navigation that is happening when remote is used the select item.
    I know this is proable pretty basic But I'm stumped.
    Thanks

    Watching the "Highlight Colors - The Low-Down on Subpictures" video tutorial available
    here
    (via the Internet Archive) will probably help to understand how to use subpicture highlighting.

  • Layered menu buttons not working when built.

    I have a project that has one menu and one track. The menu has 7 buttons linked to 7 different markers in the track. When I run the simulation in DVD SP, the buttons link fine, and play as they should...but when I build the project and run it in DVD player or burn it to a disk, the buttons do not work.
    If I create a non-layered menu, the buttons will work when built...
    I feel like i'm just missing one little setting on the layered menu
    Thanks
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Don't forget that a layered menu will normally need two presses to get anything to happen, one to select the button and the second to activate it.
    That said, are you sure that you have got the psd file set up correctly? I would recommend using a background layer with everything on it that you want to appear when not selected, then only adding layers with the changes necessary to show the button selection/activation.

  • IDVD 6:  Menu Buttons Highlight Incorrectly

    I've been trying to take two podcasts and burn them to a DVD.  Initially I tried starting directly with iDVD 6, but it wouldn't encode the second podcast.  I then started with iMovie to encode the clips before I added them to iDVD.  The podcasts are widescreen, so I selected a theme that would also be widescreen.
    For the first DVD I burned, my widescreen portable DVD player interpreted the main menu as 4:3, cutting off some of the text of the menu options.  I tried playing the DVD on a computer (not sure if it was in Windows or on the Mac), and although the menus were displayed as 16:9, the highlighting of the buttons is way off the actual buttons.  Another computer's DVD player application highlighted the buttons correctly.
    After reading some of the tips involving myDVDEdit, I copied the burned image files to a folder, changed the files to read and write, and changed the settings on the menus to the most flexible 16:9 option (auto Pan & Scan and Letterbox).  When I burned a DVD with these changes, the widescreen portable DVD player would display the DVD with black bars all around (but without cutting anything off).  On a computer, the button highlighting still does not match the actual location of the buttons.
    Are there any other settings that I can adjust to (1) fill the entire screen on my portable DVD player and (2) align the button highlighting to the actual buttons?  Thanks in advance.

    The -34506 error. Welcome to a world of frustration and wasted evenings. There are plenty of threads here with suggestions on 'rules' for setting up your slideshows in iMovie, clearing caches, creating new users etc. These have fixed this particular error for some people.
    Good luck!
    Simon
    ## Oops! - I should have read your post more carefully the first time. Hey, at least you have a new number, even if it does provide as little real information as to what the source of the error is as the one I mention!

    Try this:
    UIManager.put("MenuItem.selectionBackground", new ColorUIResource(new Color(r,g,b));This will change the color for selected MenuItems generally in your whole program.

  • Layered menu buttons

    So I've been using DVD Studio Pro for a while and I'm just now dealing with a problem I don't know how to solve.
    I'm using a layered menu with 10 buttons. I create a button by dragging on the menu. I set the target to the correct track and the remote control options to go to the correct button. I select the layers that I want to have for the off, over and active states. Then I check the invisible option.
    When I use it in a DVD player everything works perfectly fine. All the buttons respond as they should. When I use it on a CPU I can use the application's "remote control" and everything works fine.
    But if I just use my mouse cursor to rollover the buttons, they don't change states. The mouse cursor will change from the arrow to the hand, signifiying that there is an active button, but the "over state" layer doesn't appear.
    Can anyone help me solve this? I'd really appreciate it.

    As Silal said - the 'roll over' effect is not guaranteed on a layer based menu. The reason is that DVDSP actually creates a separate sub menu for each layer in your menu file, and to select and activate a button you are actually moving from menu to menu each time. The buttons are not set to 'auto-activate' and thus you may need to 'click' to get to the different states each time.
    Wherever possible, you should use a standard overlay style menu, or at least a series of linked overlays with auto-activating buttons. Layer based menus have their place, but they have a lot of imitations and really don't help give you as slick a playback experience as you want them to.

  • How do you apply a Motion Video Asset as a button on a layered Menu?

    Hi Guys,
    I am trying to create a layered menu with 2 x Motion Video Asset's as buttons (toggling between the two buttons for selection & activation).
    When I add a menu - The motion video asset is perfectly displayed as a button in the menu screen. But when I add a Layered Menu and drag my motion video asset across, it does not show the video...it shows an empty square/button in the menu screen. When the drop-down menu pops up when dragging the video asset across, I choose 'create button & track' as when I choose the other option, the 'templates' window pops up and I have my own layered menu created by Photoshop, so I don't want to use the templates. Please help?? Thank you. Anthony

    Welcome to the boards
    You cannot use video in Layered Menus

  • How do I control the selection highlighting colors assigned to Layers?

    When new layers are created in the Layers panel, they are set to a default selection highlighting color. The color for each new layer changes, sequencing through a list of color options. For my personal use, whether or not it's the lighting in my office and/or the artwork I'm working with, I find about 75% of the color options to be unusable. In fact, the only color definition that works consistently for me is 'Green' (the third option from the top of the list). I work with many layers on every project and I find myself changing every layer to Green manually. Is there an option to set the default highlighting color for every new layer to a single color rather than cycling through the list? I have looked through all the options I could find throughout Illustrator without seeing such.

    Create all your layers, select the first layer, hold down shift, select the last layer, then doubleclick to change all layers at one.
    Or create a template with your layers/names/colors that you want them, and save as to a .ait template format.

  • Layered Menu Button Question...

    Using layered menus throughout my project as it is fitting with our concept, but have never used them before. I have a question:
    I have several images on a flattened layer of a PSD file that I want to use for buttons on any given screen. Can I use an overlay to give an outer glow effect to a given button image? (Don't really want to go back and add extra layers in the psd for each button state if I can show selections some other way.)
    My limited experience has shown me that each time you add layers to the PSD file, it changes the layer selections settings on the menus where that PSD is used, as if DVDSP simply counted the depths of the layers and wasn't using the layer name as its reference.
    In short, what is the best way to show the user he has selected a button on a layered menu without adding more layers to the original PSD, if possible?

    James Roller1 wrote:
    So let me get this straight about layered menus... especially in my case: the final background document needs to be complete before I begin adding buttons or building the project, and any additional layers added will throw off any work done. Correct?
    Unsure of that, been awhile since I played with layered menus, due to their limitations on some players, slower speed etc. so I stay away from them (and so many others) for the most part when creating a "real" DVD (as oppossed to just some one off type fun things for my friends, family and myself.)
    I do not recall having the issue that you seem to have when renaming - having things switched up - but it has been awhile and I think I probably had everything laid out ahead when I did it. But if you are seeing that happen then have the menu set as close as possible before using it.

  • Menu button highlight order with dvd remote

    Hi I am using DVD studio pro 4 on a mac book pro.
    When I simulate my project and use the dvd remote to naviagate from menu to menu I have noticed that some menus start with the first button highlighted and some with different buttons highlighted.
    I have used target menu to link them together rather than link the menu to the exact menu/button1. Ideally I want each menu to start with the first button highlighted and ready to go, but I don't know how dvd sp sets the order and how I can fix this without relinking.
    Many thanks for your help

    Hi
    Check in Inspector Menu Properties the Default Button setting. That must be the button highlighted by default when you open a menu. Try simulating just the menu and check what button you get highlighted by default.
    Be aware that when creating connections you can jump to a apecific menu button. You could by mistake be connecting that way.
    Hope that helps !

  • Changing Highlight Color Behind Theme Button

    Hello -
    I've scoured this message board and saw similar postings, but none that answered my question on how to change the highlight color behind the theme button. I put together a DVD w/button themes that play the videos inside, and when my friend goes to click on the buttons, in order to play that chapter, he sees the 'white highlight' that represents which button he is selecting. He has asked me if I can change that highlight color - is this something I can do in iDVD5? Thanks!!

    HI! Thanks it worked. below is the whole script to modify an
    instance to
    RED -- or any color.
    import mx.styles.CSSStyleDeclaration;
    var new_style:Object = new CSSStyleDeclaration();
    _global.styles.myStyle = new_style;
    new_style.setStyle("color", 0x666699);
    setStyle("styleName", "myStyle");
    // my_button.setStyle("styleName", "myStyle"); --- Use this
    to only modify
    this instance.
    _global.styles.myStyle.setStyle("themeColor", 0xC83F3F);
    Hope this helps someone else. :)
