Button highlighting

I'm trying to remove the highlighting feature on a regular button but so far I've been unable.
I thought it would be easy -- just change the highlighting option on button's object field to None. This isn't doing it. Is there another place to make this change? Or is this a bug??

I rebuilt the iDVD project from scratch and it solved the problem.

  • Button Highlight turns Black in Encore

Hi all.  Am confused about what is happening here.  I am trying to make my own customized Button Highlights.  First thing I do is get my object in photoshop by doing the following.  Change "background" layer to a "layer".  Then using color range, delete the background so only the item I want is left on a transparent canvas.  Save it.  Then import it into the psd file for my Menu.   I add this as a new layer under one of the Chapter groups.  Add the appropriate label "(=1) highlight".  It looks like it should work on photoshop.  I see the design with full color where the button highlight should be.
However, once this psd file is imported into the Encore, and the "show highlights" button is clicked, the menu shows only a black version of the highlight.  in other words, it looks like a black shadow of what the file should be.  For example if the button highlight is supposed to be a picture of a red apple, all you see in Encore is a solid black apple.  Although in photoshop, when you make that layer visible you see a red apple.
Anybody have any idea what is going on here?  Why does it look normal in photoshop, but when imported into Encore as a menu file, the button highlights become only Black shadows?
    Thanks much.

As Jon points out, there is a limitation on Sub-picture Highlights. This is not a limitation of Encore, but with the DVD-specs.
The way to get what you want is to create a duplicate Menu, with the continuous tone image that you want, where the real Sub-picture Highlight would be. On the real Menu, you would set your Button to Auto Activate, and on your duplicate Menu, set the real Sub-picture Highlight to 100% Transparent. You will need a duplicate Menu for each Button. Note also, that if the user is on a computer, they will need to dbl-click to get the real Button on the duplicate Menu to work.
This will give the user the illusion that there is a continuous tone Sub-picture Highlight, but in reality it will be a graphic on that duplicate Menu.
Good luck, and if you go this route, make a flowchart and name your Menus, and duplicate Menus, so you can follow that flowchart.
    Good luck,

  • IDVD 6:  Menu Buttons Highlight Incorrectly

I've been trying to take two podcasts and burn them to a DVD.  Initially I tried starting directly with iDVD 6, but it wouldn't encode the second podcast.  I then started with iMovie to encode the clips before I added them to iDVD.  The podcasts are widescreen, so I selected a theme that would also be widescreen.
For the first DVD I burned, my widescreen portable DVD player interpreted the main menu as 4:3, cutting off some of the text of the menu options.  I tried playing the DVD on a computer (not sure if it was in Windows or on the Mac), and although the menus were displayed as 16:9, the highlighting of the buttons is way off the actual buttons.  Another computer's DVD player application highlighted the buttons correctly.
After reading some of the tips involving myDVDEdit, I copied the burned image files to a folder, changed the files to read and write, and changed the settings on the menus to the most flexible 16:9 option (auto Pan & Scan and Letterbox).  When I burned a DVD with these changes, the widescreen portable DVD player would display the DVD with black bars all around (but without cutting anything off).  On a computer, the button highlighting still does not match the actual location of the buttons.
Are there any other settings that I can adjust to (1) fill the entire screen on my portable DVD player and (2) align the button highlighting to the actual buttons?  Thanks in advance.

The -34506 error. Welcome to a world of frustration and wasted evenings. There are plenty of threads here with suggestions on 'rules' for setting up your slideshows in iMovie, clearing caches, creating new users etc. These have fixed this particular error for some people.
    Good luck!
    Simon
    ## Oops! - I should have read your post more carefully the first time. Hey, at least you have a new number, even if it does provide as little real information as to what the source of the error is as the one I mention!

  • Button highlight/mouseover

I'm trying to do something with buttons on my menus but I'm not sure I understand this. I looked through the DVDSP manual for information on the topic and didn't have any luck.
Basically, I created a simple animated effect in Motion and have imported it as an asset into my DVDSP project. I want this effect to appear next to whatever button is highlighted/selected on my chapter selection screen, but I can't figure out how to do it. I figured out how to set the animation to appear next to a button all the time, but that doesn't help any.
I've seen this in countless DVDs and I imagine it's a simple process in DVDSP, but I haven't been able to locate any information on it. Maybe I'm looking for the wrong thing. Any ideas?

The background will contain all of the animated elements, and the overlay will hide them in the normal state. I have used this effect in the past.
the challenge is getting the overlay color to match your background exactly. I found that even if I used black, the overlays appeared lighter than the background when I looked at the result in Apple DVD Player. They looked ok on most set-top players, and the few windows software players I tried, but there are lots of possible combinations out there... Use this method at your own risk.
I first saw this effect on the DVD for Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses - the button highlights are Captian Spaulding's animated, full-color head looking around, and are covered up in the normal state by a black overlay.
I have seen other effects where the overlays themselves actually appeard to blink and change color, such as on the "Chronicles of Riddick" DVD, with a spaceship-themed design in which the button highlights appeard to be multicolored blinking LED-type lights. I suppose this could be done with buttons over video and timed subtitle streams, but it's difficult with DVDSP to manage keeping the buttons selected as the track crosses the button highlight markers. Anyone got any ideas on this one?

  • Button Highlights/Overlays in Photoshop

How do I create a simple rectangle highlight around text in Photoshop? I tried creating a rectangle with the rectangle tool. Shape Layers creates an outline (which I can create a thicker stroke), and Fill Pixels creates a rectangle with the option to turn off Anti-Aliasing (as recommended by Larry Jordan, due to DVDSP's inability to read the anti-aliasing on a highlight).
    Current PS layers layout:
[layer 1] Background layer (DVD Menu picture), [layer 2] Text layer (button names), [layer 3] Overlay/Button Highlights
Overlay/Button Highlights is the part I'm stuck on. It seems silly to imagine that a simple rectangle would be so hard to make.
When imported into DVD Studio Pro 4:
The Shape Layers version of the rectangle is not readable.
The Fill Pixels version of the rectangle shows as a solid, black rectangle that covers the words
However, both look like the the highlight is AROUND the words within Photoshop. In the Layers Panel in Photoshop, the "Overlay/Button Highlights" Opacity is set to 100% & the Fill is set to 0% (so I can see the words within the rectangle.

    Larry Jordan's e-mail response:
    "Brian:
You can't get there from here.
The highlight layer in the DVD totally obscures whatever is below it. So, if you create a rectangle, it will block the text underneath, even if they aren't underneath in Photoshop, the DVD treats the overlay layer as the highest layer in the menu.
So, you need to create rectangles in Photoshop, then cut out the letters in the overlay using masks.  Next, you need to be sure that the overlay is solid black with no soft edges - DVDs don't support the edges.
Finally, you will need to rasterize all shapes and text - Layer > Rasterize layer.

  • Menu button highlight order with dvd remote

Hi I am using DVD studio pro 4 on a mac book pro.
When I simulate my project and use the dvd remote to naviagate from menu to menu I have noticed that some menus start with the first button highlighted and some with different buttons highlighted.
I have used target menu to link them together rather than link the menu to the exact menu/button1. Ideally I want each menu to start with the first button highlighted and ready to go, but I don't know how dvd sp sets the order and how I can fix this without relinking.
    Many thanks for your help

    Hi
Check in Inspector Menu Properties the Default Button setting. That must be the button highlighted by default when you open a menu. Try simulating just the menu and check what button you get highlighted by default.
Be aware that when creating connections you can jump to a apecific menu button. You could by mistake be connecting that way.
    Hope that helps !

  • Button highlights display in preview and show on computer but not set top players

    Hi
I know this has been a problem debated in previous threads, but I'm posting afresh as it's happening to me now and I can't see that anyone discovered a solution (other than to do it in DvdStudio instead!).
The issue is that button highlights won't display on set top players. I'm using a mixture of menus that I've pulled through from an Encore 2 project built on a PC (that worked fine), as well as new menus created in Photoshop.
As I test, I tried adding a menu from Encore's own library - and even that doesn't work!
I have also tried taking menus from the current project into a new one, and they don't work.
Any thoughts would be great. I'm on a new iMac 2.8 and encore cs3 with all the latest updates
    cheers

  • Encore CS5.5 "skewing" button highlights

    Hi all,
I've searched the forums but I can't seem to find a similar thread, so here goes.
I've created a pretty simple DVD menu, with five buttons and an area for a 30-second preview of the film to play on a loop. I'm having some trouble with the button highlights, in that they are "skewing" in both the preview and the final build.
This first picture is a screen grab in Photoshop, with all the highlights turned on. I've simplified the "Main Film" highlight to a box for the purposes of this post, so you can see what's happening in Encore.
When I generate a preview in Encore however, it's skewed dramatically, and the bottom-right corner of the box seems to be coming back in the bottom-left highlight area! I'm at a complete loss.
Does anyone here know what I've done to cause this, and more importantly, what I can do to fix it?
    Thanks VERY much,
    Paul

I don't know what is causing this.
What is the plain layer in each button that is above the highlight layer? Even if it is not a problem, since you are having issues, I'd move the highlight layer above it and see if that makes any difference.
Just FYI, the thumbnail layer at the bottom, results in the "background" layer not being the technical background/locked layer. Since it is still named "background," it may be okay. If you use a motion background, the current "backgroun" may still cover it. Learned this the hard way, doing lots of still menus, and then when adding the first motion backgrounds couldn't figure out why they didn't work. I assume, since that part appears to be working, that your "background" is an image that covers the motion background. Another method (just turn off the "background" layer to test) is to put that image into the movie playing in the background.

  • CS3 Mac: Button highlights preview and show on computer but not set top player

    Hi,
I have a pretty simple project on CS3 Mac Encore (all Apple & Adobe updates except Quicktime is 7.3.1). It consists of three menus which started as Photoshop files with the button overlays done in Photoshop.
I have been DVD authoring a long time on DVD Studio Pro and am an expert with After Effects, so I had no problems setting up the DVD on Encore. It previews perfectly, and when I burn it to DVD, it plays perfectly on my Mac. However, when I tried to play it on two different set top DVD players (both high quality - one JVC and one Panasonic) the button highlights do not show up at all -- you can't tell at all which button is active.
I hunted through the posts here and at other forums, and the only suggestions that I have found are that it might be a corrupted project. I have tried trashing the preferences, repairing permissions, and rebooting, and the problem persists. It is a very new installation (I recently formatted the drive, and installed a fresh OS with Apple's suite and Adobe's suite because of the recent Quicktime 7.4 bug).
So... I will try to create a new project and see if this still happens. In the meantime, has anyone else seen this?
    Thanks,
    Graham Jones.

I'm having the same problems with a very simple dvd I created. 1 main menu (static background image and buttons from the encore library) and 1 scene selection menu (static background with the same button). Ouput to dvd -r and have 100% playback on computer, but I'm having varied playback on set top players. The dvd's play, but button highlight is not visible. The dvd will navigate as long as you count the clicks of the remote... I have duped 40 copies and my client couldn't play them on several different dvd players he has. We have tried them on several of our own players and not found a problem, but I traveled to his site and checked myself; they don't work. The 2 players that wouldn't display the highlights are a jvc dr-mv5su and a brand new durabrand sts96. I have re-created my dvd using dvd architect and they play fine on all the players (using a standard underlined text highlight). Any suggestions??? I really don't think I'm doing anything wrong, but I am new to Encore CS3 Mac.

  • Is it possible to have a menu with just one button highlight when someone rolls over it?

is it possible to have a menu with just one button highlight when someone rolls over it? if so how would you do it as i tried doing an invissble button but it didn't work?

Get yourself a copy of Total Training for Encore DVD 1.5 by Daniel Brown.  This exact scenerio was explained in section 4) Building Menu and
    section 7) Advanced techniques.

  • Jumping to button highlight start positions?

Hi... I was thinking that through SPRM 8, I would be able to have the ability to jump to the start of a subtitle stream and begin playback, but perhaps I misunderstood the usage of SPRM 8?
    Is this not possible?
It appears that SPRM 8 is always 1024, because I only have one hidden button-over-video throughout my project. This button takes you to different secondary video clips by pressing enter at different times through the main video-- I am trying to figure out how to return back to the subtitle stream you were at when you pressed enter after the 2ndary video finishes playing...
Does it have to be done with chapter markers? I am hoping that is not the case.
    -patrick

Yeah.. That's what I meant-- my button over video.
Hmm.. well it doesn't appear to be working, and I'm not sure why..
    Here's my method:
my main menu has a prescript:
    sets GPRM 0 to 0
Playing the main video has a prescript
    sets GPRM 0 to 1
then the end jump on all my secondary videos is set to a script labeled "end jump" which has this:
    1 Goto 4 if (GPRM 0 = 0)
    2 mov GPRM 3, SPRM 8
3 Jump MAIN VIDEO [GPRM 3]
    4 Jump SECONDARY MENU
... So, the point of this is:
If you watch 2ndary videos from the menu, they will return to the menu containing these videos.
However, if you are watching the 2ndary videos from the BOV links in the main video, then it should return you back to the start of that button over video position.
-- But.. when I check my log, it shows SPRM 8 is always at 1024-- And I assumed this was because there is only one hidden BOV at any given time.. So if between 2:00-3:00 there is a button that takes you to 2ndary video #1, and between 4:00 to 5:00 it takes you to 2ndary video #2, etc..
But even more alarming-- I only see 4 BOV options to select via END JUMP, and I have 25 in the video-- and I've tested them.. they all work.. So I am really confused why they aren't showing up..
You can see here some screenshots:
    http://www.collinatorstudios.com/www/bovs.png
here you see that there is "rolling wave", "rolling lunge" etc... Yet here:
    http://www.collinatorstudios.com/www/endjumps.png
you see that only the chapter markers are options, as well as "belly up belly down" and a couple others-- and this is only because those markers are set to both "chapter" AND "button highlights"
On a side question, is it impossible to tell the dvd player to skip to "XX:XX" time on a disc?? I can't seem to find any information about this, and it seems odd that it would not be possible-- even laserdisc players back in the later 70s and early 80s could do this.
    thank you!
    -patrick

  • No button highlight after end action

After a video is played via button...the end action goes back to the video list, but no buttons are highlighted. In fact, even if I press the arrow buttons, I can't see anything but can still access videos just by guessing what is selected.
Button highlights are all on and there are no errors with the project (check project).
    Thanks in advance
    Kenny

Great news, and glad that you got the Timelines set up.
As for the WMV's, while Encore can Import them, they are not the ideal Assets, and can cause problems. If your Project is working fine for you, then just tuck that into the back of my memory, should you encounter issues with WMV Assets in the future.
The two ideal formats/CODEC's for DVD Projects are: DV-AVI Type II files w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV (or DD AC3) Audio, or DVD-compliant MPEG-2's. I like using separate Audio and Video files, and then just add the Audio Asset to the appropriate Timeline.
    Good luck,

  • Rules for Button Highlights.  Is this a universal thing?

So I recently learned that button highlights (or buttons in their "selected" state) in Encore cannot have a gradient or blur, and that Encore will not recognize blending modes such as "screen" from a PSD file.
Is this just an Encore thing, or is this the case with any DVD authoring software?
This all came about when I was trying to give my buttons a blurry glowing overlay effect when selected.
    Thanks, Encore community!

It's DVD spec. Not just Encore.
For Bluray, there is more ability, which Encore has not used fully.

  • No Button Highlights On Build

I've recently created a DVD where the menu will preview properly within Encore (5.5/Windows 7 64 bit) but when burned no button highlights show up.  I've verified that my aspect ratio is correct for the menu -16X9.  I've even tried saving my menu in PhotoShop and renaming the highlight layers =2 and =3, and then reimporting them after clearing the media cash to no avail.  This is really frustrating.  I can not get the highlights to show up.  I can play the DVD but I'm navigating blindly (outside of Encore's preview).
I've taken to creating a separate stripped down version of the project just to mess with the menu.  I change something and create a DVD folder on my dard drive.  Again nothing shows up when playing from the folder like it does from the Encore preview.  I've tried using different menu templates from within Encore and still nothing.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Todd

I have completely started the project from scratch.  After trying many menu options, I found a menu that seemed to work properly and have begun modifying it (color, font) to see if that will work.  My test burn without modifications seems to have worked.
My layer names were proper throughout this situation.  I'm going to try this today and burn another test.

  • Never made a button highlight...not once!

Well time for the truth, been using DVD Sp for allmost 2 years read the manual many times and consulted this web site.
I gotta admit I have never made a button in photoshop and brought it into DVDsp and made the thing highlight when you cursor over it. Anyone care to write a step by step for this. i have done many work arounds like uhh not have my custom buttons highlight or better yet for corporate clients just use pre exisiting templates...but I think I should start the new year out with this bit of info. Big thanks in advance for anyone who is willing to take the time to do this.(Assuming I have my layered button in a PSD)
Also have updated to DVD Sp 4 (from ver 2)and old templates have lost BG's, anyone else had this happen?
    happy New year all!

First step is page 88 of the DVDSP4 manual. The three steps for creating a simple overlay are at the top.
Second step is Chapter 7 of the DVDSP4 manual. It describes standard menus in detail.
In a nutshell, you create two graphic files: one is the background art for the menu and one is the overlay. The overlay has a white background with black graphics where you want the button highlights ot appear. Import both into DVDSP, assign the background to the menu background, the overlay as the menu overlay. Create your buttons and assign overlay colors and opacities for the three button states (normal, selected, activated) in the Menu palette.

  • Simple button highlights in PSD menu not working properly in Encore

I'm having some trouble making even basic menus this week - I'm working on a couple of projects that need simple menus on their DVDs, but I can't get them to work.
For one project, it's a simple menu with a photo as the background and two buttons - 'Play' and 'Behind the Scenes'. Each button group consists of a text layer with the button title and a layer called '(=1) Highlight'. The highlight layer is a simple straight line underneath the text. Nothing is overlapping, however the line is not appearing on one of the buttons. The group is detected as a button in Encore, and works when it is linked to the timeline, but the line does not appear
With the other project I've been working on this week, there's a few menu pages - a main menu, and some chapter select sub menus. These menus look a bit fancier, but the buttons are still fairly simple - they basically consist of a line of text, but this time the highlight is a rectangular outline. I'm having what looks like the same problem with these menus - the highlights aren't displaying correctly. Most of the outlines are missing their bottom lines - so only a three-sided box is appearing.
I've made plenty of menus before using the same method, and more complicated ones than this too, without running into any issues. I haven't been able to figure out what the problem is, despite starting over and making the menus from scratch several times, and making them one step at a time, importing them into Encore at every step to test. At some point, one or more of the highlights will always stop working. Despite this systematic approach, I'm still baffled. I'm using Photoshop CS5.1 and Encore CS5.1. After running into problems on one computer I tried making menus from scratch on another computer with the same version software but had the same problem.
Has anyone got any suggestions of things I should try that might solve this problem? I can send an example of a menu that's not working for me if anyone would like to take a look.

Thank you, everyone, for your continued support.
I have tried everything suggested here, plus lots more, since I last posted. There are glitches no matter what I do. I don't think it's anything to do with what I'm doing in Photoshop as I've tried using some menus from the Encore library and I'm having the same problem with those. I've also tried using buttons from the Encore library on my menus with the same result.
But that got me to thinking - perhaps it's just a glitch with Encore's previews. So I tried actually building a DVD image, even with the menus that appeared to be broken, and they turned out to be fine. So it must just be a glitch in the Encore preview.
I've also discovered another bug while doing this - if you create a menu in Encore, it's always NTSC, even if the project is PAL. It makes a 4:3, 720x480 menu with a PAR of D1/DV NTSC 0.91. Surely, if you've set up a PAL project, and you create a new menu, it should create one that's actually PAL?
