Button or App to close all background windows?

I frequently have many windows open in the background and have been having to close them one at a time.  Is there a button or application for the purpose of closing all background windows at one time?

unfortunately, that will be the same on 7.8..

Is it safe to shut it down while having these apps in the background?
When you shut down operating systems like MS Windows or Mac OS, they automatically close your active applications before shutting down, is this true for iOS 7?

Thanks, I do appreciate your immediate response to my question.
BUT your answers revealed an explicit controversy about background apps ... close them to save power and performance OR don't bother to close them as they are idle or inactive!
This dispute is resolved by APPLE in the following link:

My original question was: Is it necessary to kill background apps before shutting down my ipad to avoid any harm to the apps or the OS?

  • Close all  open windows at same time

Is there any way to close all open programs at once, rather than having to do them one at a time?

I don't know of a way to close all open apps at the same time, but i do know of a way to close all open windows in a particular app at one time, ie: safari
Hold down Option when you click on the red close button at the top of one of those windows, and it will close all windows *for that app*...but doing so doesn't necessarily quit the app.
The only other thing i can think of you can do is hold down Command, Option, and Esc to get the Force Quit window to open, (or access it from the Apple menu at the top left corner) and then you can select one at a time all the apps and force quit them individually...it's still quicker than switching between each app individually..

  • Close all open windows on desktop -- shortcut

Is there a shortcut to close all the windows on the desktop? Up to now I'm having to close each one individually. I'm talking about all types of windows (Safari, Address Book, plus other apps). Any suggestions?

I got the answer I wanted by searching the knowledge base for Tiger. Here is what I found:
My favorite for closing all windows, and not listed much:
option-command and just click on the desktop.
Much more natural then trying to get the W at the same time.

  • Close all open windows

Is there any way to close all open windows at once? I cannot find any way to do so. Any keyboard shortcut?

    Thanks, Tom.
Your response led me to the answer I was looking for. However, I found it worked better to press command and option , then click the red close button on the top line of the top window. This closed all open windows within the application of the open window. I had to do the same thing for each application. In my test case, I opened about 10 word processor windows and 10 email windows, all at the same time. I had to do the command-option - click red button twice, once for my email application, and once for the word processor application. It took me about 2 seconds to close all of the open windows.
Thanks a lot for your instructions.

  • Howto close all open windows?

    Hi,
I am developing some kind of library, and I would like to close all open windows, dialogs, tooltips in the error case.
The problem is I don't have control about the windows currently open, many are instantiated by plug-ins.
Is there a way to get a list of all windows? This way I could go throw the list and simply call dispose() on all.
    Thank you in advance, Clemens

One possible approach could be trying to track AWT event. I would try to get notified as each Component is added and maintained in a hashtable.
    getToolkit().addAWTEventListener (aWTEventListener, AWTEvent.COMPONENT_EVENT_MASK | AWTEvent.CONTAINER_EVENT_MASK);
    AWTEventListener  aWTEventListener = new AWTEventListener()
            public void eventDispatched (AWTEvent Event)
// find the component from event source and record it.
    };

mozilla firefox start page keeps logging itself on after I close all internet windows I come back and there it is. Why??? Make it stop.

I've got the exact same issue! I'm pretty sure it just started today too. It's so bizarre because we've all been using Firefox 26.0 for at least a month, right? How could the ''about:home'' page all of a sudden cause this issue?
I've been able to replicate this issue on a virtual machine running Windows XP SP3, so clearly it has nothing to do with Windows 7.

  • Feature request: please give the ability to close all background apps at once!?

Hello. Please oh please give us the ability to close all open/running apps with one click or swipe. I, like many users, like to close running apps (much like on my computer) to keep my ipad/iPhone running fast. I know you guys say that background apps are put on pause and don't slow things down but that is simply not the case in real world usage. All the time my iPhone or iPad becomes sluggish and if I swipe 30 times to close all the apps the sluggishness goes away. I like the simple and easy to use ios, but a little more control for the user would be very beneficial. This, I would guess, is one of the main reasons one would get an android device instead, because they require for fine tune control. Giving us this feature, amoung a few others, would be a win win. The end user get more what they need, and apple steals away (or keeps) more loyal apple buyers.

Send your suggestion to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

  • Can I close all background apps now at once?

Now in IOS 5, is there a way to clos all background apps at once?

Only certain apps actually run in the background.
The list you see when you double-click the Home button are also "Recently USed" apps and may already be closed.
This question was asked a lot when iOS4 originally came out and the short answer I'm afraid is "no", but don't worry about them unless they're GPS apps which will drain your battery in 4 hours if left running in the background.

  • Is there a keyboard shortcut to close all unselected windows (background windows). This is for pop ups not blocked by the safari block pop up preference. This would be different to [cmd q] as it would leave the selected window with her tabs active...

    this is for safari.
    Thanks!

None that I know of - Option clicking a tab 'x' closes all others, but doesn't work for windows, here.
Between Ghostery & Adblock Safari extensions, you'd rarely see a pop-up at all.

    OS X keyboard shortcuts
    Summary
Learn about common OS X keyboard shortcuts. A keyboard shortcut is a way to invoke a function in OS X by pressing a combination of keys on your keyboard.
    Products Affected
    Mac OS X 10.2, Mac OS X 10.3, Mac OS X 10.4, Mac OS X 10.5, Mac OS X 10.6, OS X Lion, OS X Mountain Lion
To use a keyboard shortcut, or key combination, you press a modifier key with a character key. For example, pressing the Command key (the key that has a symbol) and the "c" key at the same time copies whatever is currently selected (text, graphics, and so forth) into the Clipboard. This is also known as the Command-C key combination (or keyboard shortcut).
A modifier key is a part of many key combinations. A modifier key alters the way other keystrokes or mouse/trackpad clicks are interpreted by OS X. Modifier keys include: Command, Shift, Option, Control, Caps Lock, and the Fn key. If your keyboard has an Fn key, you may need to use it in some of the key combinations listed below. For example, if the keyboard shortcut is Control-F2, press Fn-Control-F2.
Here are the modifier key symbols you may see in OS X menus:
(Command key) - On some Apple keyboards, this key also has an Apple () logo
    (Control key)
(Option key) - "Alt" may also appear on this key
    (Shift key)
(Caps Lock) - Toggles Caps Lock on or off
    Fn (Function key)
    Startup shortcuts
Press the key or key combination until the expected function occurs/appears (for example, hold Option during startup until Startup Manager appears, or Shift until "Safe Boot" appears). Tip: If a startup function doesn't work and you use a third-party keyboard, try again with an Apple keyboard.

  • Closing Report Preview window closes all parent windows

I have a form 6.0 calling a report 6.0 with several user parameters using run_report_object in preview mode. After the finishing previewing, the user closes the report preview window. Then the preview window closes all the parent windows.
    Need help!
    1) The parameters are char, date and number types.
    2) I don't have a parameter form. I take out the high-light of the parameters on the parameter form and the parameter form title.
    3) I have several user parameters and without the parameter form i'm still able to pass the parameters from the Form.
    Thanks

report_other parameter can only take 255? characters.
I use create parameter list and add_parameter instead.

  • How to close all background apps at one shot?

Can any one answer this question??

Read the article you linked to at whenwillapple.com... a more detailed explanation than I had seen anywhere else… thanks.
@Parshwanath: So if you still want to close everything, it is possible from the hidden dock (double-click home button) to hold an icon until a _red_ 'X' appears next to each one, and then tap the 'X' to manually close it. You can't close them all at once, but you can quickly go down the row until you have them all. Of course you will have to once again open an app to have it appear in the hidden dock to be able to use 'fast app switching'.
This technique is only useful if you really need to reclaim whatever little bit of memory a sleeping app occupies while waiting to be called up. I don't remember where I found this tip - just that it came from a discussion on how to free up memory, which, given the management built into iOS4, I didn't think was necessary, but I did find it helpful in making an older game behave properly on the occasions it became obstreperous. FWIW - this is on an original iPad (OS4.3.3) and I don't know if the iPad2 is different - don't think so.
