Buttons don't navigate properly in Apple DVD Player!

Hello there,
This is extraordinarily frustrating! Can somebody please help ASAP?
We're running DVD Studio Pro 4.0.2 on Mac OS X 10.3.9, and we just finished authoring a DVD with a layered menu created from a Photoshop document.
When we put the DVD into a normal DVD player connected to our television, the remote control works as expected to navigate through our buttons. When we press right, it goes to the right (as we programmed it to do so). When we press left, it goes to the left (as we programmed it to do so). Everything works just fine!
HOWEVER -- here is the problem: When we put it into our computer running APPLE'S VERY OWN Apple DVD Player, the simulated remote on the screen has a mind of its own! When we press right on one button, it will go to the left. When we press right on another button, it will go up. When we press down on one button, it will go left. This is absolutely MADDENING! And this is Apple's OWN player!
We've also noticed that the simulator within DVD Studio Pro plays back the DVD verry slow... in a choked performance way. More so than we've seen with any DVD in the past. Is this part of the problem?
We are pulling our hair out over here trying to solve this! Can anyone please help?
Thanks!
Scott

An overlay style menu is a lot easier to create than a layer based one, and ionvolves just two flat files - one for the background (with everything on it that you want to show when buttons are not selected, etc) and one for the highlights (the overlay layer contains the shapes, text, tick, underline arrow or whatever that you want to show up when the button is selected).
These menus react faster, take only one click to activate a button and support the use of audio. They can't get as graphically rich as a layer based menu and if that is the prime consideration then I'd recommend using a series of menus linked together to go between the different button states, as this is still better than a photoshop layer based menu (which, incidentally, gets turned into a series of linked menus anyway as your disc is being built!)

  • Buttons don't show up in a DVD player...

    I have a strange problem,
I made a menu with 3 buttons and an overlay, everything works well when I simulate the menu, the highlights shows up but then, when i built the disc, the buttons highlights won't appear. I can't even use the remote of a DVD player to navigate because no highlights are here !!!!
on the other menus I have no problems, the problematic menu is the first one and it comes after an intro track. I also add a music track to it.
What's happening with the highlights ???

actually i'm working on a ntsc project,
    the files are all .m2v
the project start with a simple menu (photoshop file with background image and highlights). I really feel like there is a bug on this one because only the first menu has the problem : the highlight doesn't show up except when I select the button, then I have the selected color which appear for a second.
It could be enough if this dvd had to be read on a computer but it's a real problem when you need to play it on a dvd player.
I used PS CS2 to make the menu
my highlights are 3 crowns draw with red and blue, I used the advanced color mode in DVD SP, the buttons appear in DVD SP as white when selected and yellow when activated...it works fine in the simulation and then no white selected state works on the built DVD...
I thought that i messed up with the loop point so i checked and it should really work.
to answer your question, i can activate the buttons but i don't see which one i activate as the highlights doesn't show up.
I need to deliver asap and i'm in big trouble.
    thanx Hal for your help.

  • DVD Remote Control buttons don't work when using regular DVD player

I created a DVD using DVD Studio Pro (version 3.0.2) and am unable to navigate through any menus or buttons using the DVD players remote control. I can press the play button on the actual DVD player and play the movie. How can I fix this issue? Any suggestions would be helpful!
I never changed the default setting on the file I made and the DVD works just fine in the simulator as well as any computer DVD player. Also, is there a way to make sure the DVD will play on all DVD players even if it doesn't read burned DVDs?
    Thanks for the help!

Not sure if I can add anything here - you're in good hands! I'd like to know how you constructed the menus - did you use photoshop layers for the background and overlay, or did you use a pict file? Are these motion menus or static?
About the compatibility - a burned disc will only ever be about 85% compatible with the number of DVD players out there, and if a DVD player states that it cannot read from DVD-R or DVD+R discs then it most likely won't play your disc. The only way to approach full compatibility is to have the disc replicated, but the cost of this usually means it is not worth while for anything less than 500 to 1000 discs at a time. If you are using DVD±R then all you can do is take steps to make sure the disc is as compatible as it can be, such as keeping the MPEG encode less than 7.5MBPS, using AC3 audio, not applying paper labels and so on.
Compatibility is getting better in general, this summer I have burned in excess of 90 individual projects on DVD-R (and duplicated each one up to seven times each) for playback on consumer players and only one came back (so far). When I looked at it there was a chunk missing from the surface of the disc, which probably explained the error!

  • Menu buttons not working in Apple DVD Player

I am having a real problem. I have a menu with three buttons. The default button takes you either of the other buttons (depending on whether you press right or down on the remote). These two buttons are auto-action and proceed imediately to other tracks. This works perfectly in home DVD players and in the Apple DVD Player using the "remote". Howver, if I try clicking the buttons using a mouse on the Apple DVD Player window, they DO NOT work! I have buttns over video on the same disc and these work perfectly by clicing on them with the mouse. Has anyone else had a problem like this and if so, have you found a solution? Many thanks!

Is the one that doesn't work a layered menu? DVD Player does not work correctly with layered menus, it takes one click to switch to the selected state, and a second click to activate the button.

  • Buttons over video is crashing Apple DVD player!

I have 4 menus (tracks) that use buttons over video. The first one plays just fine- the buttons come up after a second & disappear 30 seconds later(then the menu continues into a film). The other 3 menus crash 1-2 seconds before the buttons over video forces the subtitle to become visible. here's what i've done to troubleshoot:
-set a different menu to be first play
-swapped out the m2v/ac3 files to see if that was causing the issue
-moved my menus/tracks to different VTSs (using dvdsp 4)
-shifted the hi-lite markers forward and back to various times
    -swapped out the overlay file
All my tracks were created exactly the same- using the same BOV structure (13 buttons in all)... I'm completely baffled. One works fine and the rest don't work at all!!
p.s. i burned the disc and tested it on a regular dvd player.. seems to work fine, but it still crashes on the computer.
    PowermacG4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   DVD Studio Pro 4

I figured out the problem so I'll wrap up the thread in case someone else runs into this problem...
I was using dvdSP's ability to "offset" the overlay file in order to make my highlights match up perfectly. For some reason if the offset differs from one overlay to the next in the same subtitle stream, it causes apple dvd player to crash.
    example:
(all motion menus were created on one track with BOV & then separated into stories for easy targeting)
subtile(BOV) 1 had an overlay file offset to 0x & -4y & subtitle(BOV)2, my second menu, had an overlay file offset to 3x & -1y.
The first one would play fine, but as soon as apple dvd player detected the next subtitle it would crash. I solved the problem by editing my overlay files in photoshop to compensate for the offsets & leaving the offset in DVDSP untouched. weird... but it works now.

  • Invisible Auto Action Buttons not clickable in Apple DVD player

I've put some Easter Eggs in my menus which are invisible and auto-action.
In simulator, you can access them with the controller by pressing a particular arrow button from a particular selected menu item. They are also accessible by clicking directly on them with the mouse.
But in Apple DVD player they are only accessible with the controller; clicking on them with the mouse doesn't work.
Is this just a limitation of Apple DVD player?

If you've set them to be Invisible why would you expect them to be clickable. The whole point surely is that they are Invisible.

  • HD-DVD don't Play on Apple DVD Player

My Business is HD-DVD for Software training.
but, my client complain for about 3 month ago because that HD-DVD (4.7GB) can't play on Mac ( apple DVD Player 5.5 )
first time, we try HVTS folder drop into Apple DVD Player. OK.
    but about 10 minute. stop.
Apple DVD Player bug pix please.
we can wait Apple's develope, but our client can't wait Apple's unbalance develope.
    ( FCPX,MOTN5 just up, the other ??? )

The HD-DVD format was abandoned back in 2008.
Apple has abandoned DVD Studio Pro.
If your HD-DVD media is working on a Mac it is a fortunate happenstance.
I would not expect anything related to HD-DVD to be updated, fixed, or improved in any way, shape, or form.
Blu-Ray is the only way to deliver HD video on some sort of disc. There are ways to do this through Compressor but for any sort of control over authoring you would have to look at a non-Mac piece of software.

  • Problems playing DVD in Apple DVD player

Hi guys. I am having some trouble with a DL DVD I burned in DVD SP 4.1.0. The DVD plays correctly everywhere (set tops and computers) except when using the Apple DVD player 4.0 (I think that's the version that came with OS 10.3.9.). I have a newer version of the player on my system and everything works fine but when I send the disk out for testing, it comes back with a ton of errors when played on an older version of the Apple DVD player - buttons not working properly, video tracks not followng the end jump, menus not linking, etc.
Is this a known issue between DVD SP 4.1 and Apple DVD player 4.0 (or DL disks and Apple DVD 4.0)? What should I do about this? I've burned DL disks in DVD SP 2.0 before without any problems. I just recently upgraded to 4.1 and now am having this issue. If I maybe use Roxio to burn the disk would that help? Anyone have any experience with this issue? Thanks?

If I maybe use Roxio to burn the disk would that help?
    I personally think it would.
I always use Toast to burn discs
Past experience has shown that when DVDSP has burned the discs they often had errors, the same projects burned using Toast produced faultless results
I now author in DVDSP, building the VIDEO_TS folders to the hard drive, then burn these to disc using Toast.

  • First Play "Not Permitted" on Apple DVD player

I have some duplicated DVD-Rs of a project, and the client ha reported a disutrbing error. I've been told that on several different Macs running OS 10.2 - 10.4, not only does the disc not auto launch DVD player and not auto-play the first play menu, but when the user presses play on the floating control, they get a "Not Permitted" message. The user reported that they were able to choose "open Video_TS" and navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder on the disc, at which point they were able to get the disc to play.
The disc include a significant amount of content on the ROM sector of the disc, including an autorun and an .exe file for windows users. However, I can't see how the presence of these ROM files could interfere with the operation of DVD Player and the VIDEO_TS folder on the disc.
Furthermore, the duplication master for this disc has been formatted directly from DVD studio as a standrd DVD volume - no Toast burn, hybrid volume formatting, anything like that.
Upon inspection I discovered that my authoring assistant had specified a pre-script on the first play menu. I try never to use pre-scripts for anything, as I have found the way DVD studio handles them to be unreliable. However, I suspect this pre-script on the first play menu as the culprit in this problematic behavior, and have removed it.
The problem consists in that I did not experience this problem with any of the DVD-R checkdiscs I burned from DVD studio, unti the discs were duplicated. We'll be doing a full-scale replication run as the next step. Since I am not able to reproduce this problem on discs I burn here, I'd like find a way to know I have fixed the problem.
My question is, has anyone else ever encountered issues with their first-play menu throwing up this "not permitted" condition in Apple DVD Player? Has anyone ever found a connection between this issue and pre-scripts, or between this issue and any ROM files?
I suspect that DVD studio's pre-scripts are "simulated" or translated through the abstratction layer of DVD studio in a way that allows them to be outside the DVD spec, or perhaps there are other ways DVD studio might be using the pre-command on a menu, such as when you specify a button selection for a menu, that use the menu pre-command, and override the pre-script you might have spcified for the menu.

I've seen it on replicated masters when a dvd-r master was used and not all regions were selected as ok to play. DSP doesn't 'check' region 7 by default... its best to use a region all project and .img files, not VIDEO_TS builds to the HD.
How were the discs duplicated though? That is probably the cause of the problem, not the pre-Script. Maybe a 'Data' disc was burnt and not a DVD-Video type option...

  • Apple DVD Player will not launch

I have a B/W G3 Tower/Desktop as well as a G3 PowerBook (black laptop). Both run OS 9.2.2, QT 5.0.2, and Apple DVD Player v1.2.
When I try to launch the DVD Player on the tower, I receive the following on a pop-up window:
"Apple DVD Player cannot open because it cannot find the required hardware. Try reinstalling Apple DVD Player. (204)"
The following pops up when I try to launch the DVD Player on the G3 PowerBook laptop:
"Apple DVD Player cannot open because the required hardware was not found. If you have another application open that uses sound or video, quit that application and open Apple DVD Player again. If you are using a PowerBook that requires a DVD-Video PC Card, make sure the PC card is properly installed in the appropriate slot. (21)"
Both used to work but for some reason have abruptly stopped. I'm going crazy trying to figure it out. Speech is turned off and I don't have any other video or DVD apps open.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

you may need to reinstall your operating system because it sounds like you dvd rom driver is damaged but there is a way around this to
go to google and search for a program called patch burn this application will reinstall a fress driver for your cd dvd rom drive but unknown if this will even work because if the file is currupted you may end up locking out the cd drive driver and your cd drive will stop working in os x and you will need to reinstall the operating system
    but try patch burn first

  • Apple DVD Player Question

    Hi,
I'm not sure this is the right forum, but you guys are always very helpful.
I need to make the Apple DVD Player basically a kiosk player.
I have a track ball and a button for enter so that is how you navigate the dvd.
I need to make it in full kiosk mode, meaning no controller on screen.
Does anyone know how to turn off the controller so it doesn't pop up?
    Thanks,
    Dave

You can't disable the controller, but you can drag it out of view.
From to the DVD Player help document (search word: kiosk):
    Setting up a movie kiosk
You can set up a computer to show a movie but not allow users to stop it or otherwise control its playback using DVD Player's menus. This is useful, for example, if you want to play a self-running movie in a public booth.
To control movie playback in kiosk mode, you must use the keyboard. If you want, you can remove the keyboard and connect a mouse directly to the computer after the movie is ready to start.
Be sure the DVD Player Controller is also hidden if you do not want viewers to use it.
Users can still select items from the disc menus by using the mouse, but cannot use DVD Player menus because the menu bar is hidden.
    1. Choose DVD Player > Preferences, and then click Full Screen.
    2. Select the checkbox labeled "Kiosk Mode (disable menu bar)."
    3. To control DVD Player in kiosk mode, use the DVD Player keyboard shortcuts.
DVD Player usually ignores your computer's screen saver and sleep settings so full screen playback is not interrupted.
To allow any automatic screen saver or sleep settings to take effect after a period of inactivity, select "Allow Screensaver on DVD menu in kiosk mode" in the Full Screen pane of DVD preferences. To remain in kiosk mode when exiting the screen saver, also select the "Remain in full screen when DVD Player is inactive" preference. Otherwise, DVD Player exits kiosk mode when exiting the screen saver.

  • Apple DVD Player freezing PowerBook when power adapter unplugged

I've got a 15" 1.5GHz G4 PowerBook (previous generation, bought in August 2005) with 1Gb RAM and a Combo drive, running OSX 10.4.2 (not 10.4.3)
When I play DVD movies through Apple's DVD player, and then eject the disc (by clicking the eject button in the DVD player window), everything is normal, until I unplug the power adapter (while the computer is running, but without the DVD in the drive). Then, everything freezes - the pointer locks up, the keyboard locks up, everything. The only way to get out of this is to hold the power button down.
What could be causing this? Is it because I'm ejecting the disc while it's essentially still playing (I keep on forgetting to press the "Stop" button)?
It's also only started doing this since I installed drivers for my new Epson Stylus D88 printer - could this be a problem?
I've repaired permissions, and that seems to have done nothing.
Note: Apple DVD Player is not running when I unplug the power adapter, nor is the DVD in the drive.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for the help

I've found out that it's not actually a total freeze, it's a 10 second hang and I'm impatient!!
But, during the hang, it appears as if everything is frozen.
I'll contact Epson - I downloaded an update to the printer driver, but that doens't seem to have done anything. I can't uninstall the printer driver, as I'm currently at university, and I don't have the installer CD with me for the printer.

  • Apple DVD Player installers won't recognize Lacie d2 16x4x12x

    Greetings :
My eMac has a CDR internal drive only.
I just upgraded to Panther (upgrade disks) and I'm running 10.3.9.
I'm trying to get the Apple installers to recognize the Lacie d2 I just got, so that I can install the Apple DVD player (software update?) or import a DVD player from another machine.
The software won't install because it says it can't detect a proper drive, and the player I imported won't open for the same reason. I tried using Patchburn, Pacifist and the installed Installer on my eMac to no avail.
    Here's what my system profiler says about the d2 : : :

I believe the Lacie d2 I just got is the previous generation,
no lightscribe. It works great (plug an play) for burning data but I'd really like to use the native Apple DVD player to watch DVD video with the drive. I downloaded the free/open source VLC media player and it seems to work well enough,
but I'm on a mission to use Apple software if possible.
I'm also thinking of upgrading to Tiger soon so I'm wondering if I'll have any corresponding issues there.
Oh, and I did download and install the latest driver was from the Lacie site.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Follow it exactly, it works !
    1. Download and install Pacifist.
    2. Insert Mac OS 10.3 CD in drive.
    3. Select Open Mac OS X Install Packages button in Pacifist. It will ask you to swap out all three 10.3 install disks.
    4. Click the Find button and type "DVD". A long list should show up.
    5. The important files/folders to replace are:

**There are many duplicates of the files/folders above in other languages. I only chose to install English.
    6. Select each or all and click Install.

  • Clock freezes after using Apple DVD Player

I am having a small and annoying issue with the Apple DVD Player (v 4.6.5). This just started happening recently. Everytime I run a DVD (or video TS file, etc) on the software player-it performs as usual. After quitting the application and choosing to eject the disc, I notice there is a longer lag from when I first used the computer, then the little colored wheel of death spins, and eventually Apple DVD Player closes.
The problem, however, is after the application is closed out, my time freezes in the status bar in the upper right hand corner of the screen. (As I write this it says 1:16 and the time in the apple "date and time" preferences panel of OSX says it's 2:14-which is the real time) If I drag the cursor up to the time status bar in the upper right hand corner, it turns into the spinning color wheel, and back again once dragged out.
Once the computer restarts, the time in the upper right goes back to normal with no spinning wheel (until I open Apple DVD Player and quit out of it again). I know this is not an earth-shattering issue, but it is fairly annoying and abnormal. If anyone has suggestions, please help.

It sounds like you found your answer but I also wanted to mention that this is a known BUG when using DVD Player and the Digital Optical Out of a G5. If you look at activity monitor when the Clock is dead and you get the Beach Ball the SystemUIServer will be listed as not responding. If you Force quit this process everything should start working again. As long as the LoginWindow Process is running the SystemUIServer will restart when needed after the force quit.
HOWEVER, The other part of this bug with Digital Optical Out is that sometimes the LoginWindow Process will also stop responding. In this case a Log-Out is the only way to correct the problem. The third part of this bug is sometimes the Finder also stops responding but a Relaunch will fix that.
As I said it sounds like you found your problem but I wanted to post this incase others out there using the Digital Optical Out read this and don't correct their problem.
Also, If you were using the "DOO" by deleting the .plist will set the DVD player back to SYSTEM falsely making one think the problem is fixed.
Last I know this is a known bug because I submitted it as a bug to Apple and received an e-mail stating they know of this problem already.
