Buttons/Links in PDFs on iPad

I'm putting together a series of documents to be distributed and read on iPads at a meeting using Acrobat X. I've been placing buttons on each page saying "return to page 1" but when I transfer them to an iPad and use iBooks the buttons don't appear.
So, two questions:
1) Will the buttons just not appear at all, as in does the iPad not support that kind of function on PDFs
2) If there is an app out there that will support these functions, what is it?
I've tried looking elsewhere to find this answer but haven't. Apologies if I've missed something obvious.

I did some experimenting with the User Guide for the iPad, which is a pdf. It has hyperlinks in the Table of Contents. When I Get Info on the Guide on my Mac, it says that it is an Adobe InDesign document. (Interesting that Apple did not use Preview or Pages to create it!)
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/ipad_2_user_guide.pdf
I downloaded it with Safari on the iPad. In Safari the links in the doc do not function. I tapped the page and chose to open it in iBooks and the links work fine. I tapped the page and opened it in GoodReader, which is a Swiss-Army-Knife, great-for-everything, iOS app, and the links worked fine. I tapped the page again and opened it in FileApp and the links did not function.
It seems that links work depending on the iOS app that opens the doc, but beyond that I cannot shed light on why a pdf with links made with InDesign function, but yours made with Acrobat do not.
I hope this is helpful.

  • Button link to PDF?

I've created a menu that has buttons linking to movies, and I'd like to create a button that links to a PDF. Can I do that? How?
I know how to include the PDF on the DVD using the DVD-ROM Content link, but how is a user supposed to know there's data on the DVD?
    Thanks in advance.

how is a user supposed to know there's data on the DVD?
I handle this in one of three similar ways:
1.) Create a Title with instructions in PrPro, telling the user how to access the ROM content via a computer. I put in an admonition that it will NOT be accessible via a set-top player. I like this better than #2 below.
2.) Same drill, but with a Menu w/ no visable acitve Buttons/Links, either as Play First, or at the end. I'd do an Auto-Activate Button w/ no graphics (like an Easter Egg), so that the user can navigate back to the program/Menus.
3.) Same drill, but as text on maybe both the DVD disc and on the liner-notes on the case. I'll usually do this along with #1.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - Sonic was working on eDVD, a program for interactivity on a DVD, but abandoned the software. IIRC, the code has been bought and there is work being done on similar, but do not have details.

  • Button linking to PDF

standard convention to link to a specific page of a PDF
    document is to do this:
    http://www.mydomain.com/myPDF.pdf#page=7
i apply this to the 'open url/file' in the button properties
"on success/user clicks button", but all that happens is the PDF
opens to page 1. never to the appropriate page in the document.
any ideas as to what could cause this?

sorry -- i have a captivate output file (SWF) residing within
a Captivateplayer, which resides on our LAN. in the SWF are a
series of buttons that all link to unique pages within on PDF,
    which resides on our intranet.
i fixed one problem. turns out somebody uploaded a recent
edition of the PDF complete with a SPACE in the name. fixed that up
and now i've got a little bit closer to fixing the issue.
now, when clicking one of the buttons in the SWF, the PDF
will open to the appropriate page. GREAT! but when i close the PDF
(or extra browser session), and click a DIFFERENT button that links
to a different page in the PDF, the same previous page opens...as
if it's CACHED. thing is, to rule out this being an IE
cache/history thing, i forced adobe to open the file itself and to
not integrate with the internet explorer. ...and the same thing
    happened.
    what could cause this?

  • Why text and button links on a PDF do not work in the iPad

I have Acrobat Pro 9.2.3 and InDesign CS5.
I've tried creating both button and text links directly from InDesign (Window > Interactive > Hyperlinks). I then export the multi-page PDF with "Acrobat 6 and Above" selected as well as the "Hyperlinks" and "Interactive Elements" checked. When I open the PDF in my iPad, none of the text or button links work.
    Then . . .
I tried opening the same multi-page PDF in Acrobat Pro, and manually created the link boxes (Tools > Advanced Editing > Link Tool). The iPad still can't interprete these two interactive elements.
Any clues what I'm doing wrong?

Try exporting as ePub - now test inside Digital Editions and if OK - drag the file into iTunes and synch to iPhone/iPad.
It's probably a Preview issue as mentioned but exporting to ePub is good fun!

  • How do I make links work in PDFs on ipad?

How do you make links work in PDFs on ipad?

I downloaded your "test.pdf" file. First I tested it on a Mac in Acrobat and the links worked fine.
Then I transferred it to my iPad and opened it in Reader 10.3. The links worked fine. When I clicked OK to the message I quoted above, they took me to the site in Safari browser.
It could be that you need to reset your iPad. Hold down the Home button and Sleep/Wake button at the same time. Hold then thru the message about turning it off, until you see the Apple logo. Then let go.

For anyone else reading this thread, it is worth knowing that sometimes an email is, or can be, corrupted thereby jamming the works. The solution above is good, but I just wanted to suggest another one.
If the problem arises, go to an online mail access service, such as Mail2Web.com and login to you mail account there and delete the offending message.
    Problem solved.
And George, as this is all entirely voluntary, whinging about no takers may not endear people to you. Besides which, a few minutes of searching on Google would have found you a number of solutions.

HTML link to pdf works ok on Mac but not on ipad. Adobe Reader for ipad downloaded. What's wrong?

    Hi pwillener,
Thank for reply. The pdf’s are in a subfolder “PDF” of the folder holding the web page. The web page itself uses
. This works in full size computer browsers but not in an iPad.
My excursion through the search engine has produced the idea of adding #page = requesting page to the URL but I have not had time to try it perhaps without the = sign.

  • What happened to being able to view links in PDFs on the iPad?

We create our board packets in Adobe Acrobat on a computer then send them to our board members who receive them on their iPads.  When we create them on the computer, we make specific words links so that during the board meeting, our board members can tap on the word and it jumps them to the pay within their packets that discuss that topic.  We also make links at the bottom of the pages of each section to take them back to the agenda page (they say "back to top").  Over the last couple months, we've noticed these links don't show up when we open the board packets in the Adobe Reader app on the iPads, but they did used to show up.  They show up in the file if I open it on my computer.  They also don't show up on a file I have uploaded to Google Drive for our board members to access.  Any thoughts or suggestions on how to get this working again?
    Thanks!

    Hi jcwords,
Results may vary depending on how hyperlinks are defined in your PDF documents.
Here's an example of the PDF document containing the hyperlinks that work in Adobe Reader for iOS.
    http://wwwimages.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/products/acrobat/pdfs/adobe-acrobat-xi-cre ate-pdf-files-tutorial-ue.pdf
You can transfer the file to your iPad/iPhone, open it in Adobe Reader for iOS, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and tap one of the links: "Convert PDF to Word", "Convert PDF to Excel", etc.
Adobe Reader for iOS will display the confirmation dialog and open it in Safari (web browser) as expected.
What happens when you tap the hyperlinks in your PDF documents (that are generated by the latest version of Acrobat)?  Does it do anything?  Do you see an error message?
It is possible that (a) the hyperlinks for web pages in your PDF documents are not defined correctly or (b) Adobe Reader for iOS has a defect that prevents the hyperlinks from working correctly.
We need to take a look at individual PDF documents to properly diagnose the cause of the problem.
Would you share one of your PDF documents with us (Adobe)?  I can send the instructions on how to privately share your PDF document(s) with us in a separate email.  If you don't mind sharing a PDF document in this public forum, you can provide the public link to your PDF document using "Share Public Link" in Adobe Reader for iOS.
    Thank you for your help.

  • Open an attachment (non-PDF) within a PDF document (via button/link/other)

    Good morning,
I have a PDF file where I attached an excel file and I'd like to use a mechanism (button/link/other) in the PDF to open the attachment. I read the the link technique only works if the attachment is a PDF. Is that true ? Is there anything else I could do to achieve this ?
    Thanks,
    Fabrizio

This can't be done with a script, but you can do it manually by going to
the link you created, editing the "Go to a page in another document" action
in it and then setting the "Open in" option to "New Window".
This can also be done with a stand-alone tool, but that is more
    complicated, of course.

  • PDF button link path missing

Hi. I made a button in the pdf file with a link to a file I have on a network. If I copy the main file to a different location I loose the path to the attached file. How can I avoid having this problem? thanks

File links in PDF files are relative by default. You would need to either use a script with a hard-coded path, or an external tool to change the relative paths in absolute ones.

  • Am I able to link a button to a PDF?

I would like to link a button to a PDF in my folio. Is this possible? Is it "easy"?

    No. Not correct.
Create the zip file and then move the PDF into it. The file has to be in the root of the zip file.
Then fix the URL. It’s just HTMLResourses/myPDF.pdf. There is no http.

  • Help with linking navigation menu button directly to pdf on server.

I am trying to make the "specials" part of nav menu link to pdf on server. Please help

You need to have your menu set to Manual in the menu properties.
Then select a pdf file that you will be linking to and add it to the assets.
Then select the menu item that you want linking to the PDF and select the PDF from the Hyperlinks list.

  • How to create interactive pdf for Ipad using InDesign CS6

Hi I created a Magazine layout using InDesign CS6 and wanted it to be viewed on native Ipad reader (but not as apps).  I put interactivity features like page navigations and hyperlinks and converted it to interactive pdf. The problem was the links and buttons are not showing on Ipad.
I tried using Acrobat Pro to create the hyperlinks and this time the navigations and hyperlinks are showing. But is there a way not to create the hyperlinks manually one by one (specially the next page and previous page). If I have more than 100 pages of documents this process will be very tedious.
Is there a solution to create the interactive pdf directly from InDesign without creating the links in Acrobat?

    Hi Guys
This is Sean Smith.  Marilou who wrote the original post works for me.  Bob if you could point us in the direction of details you need I’ll ensure we provide the additional information as soon as possible.
M tells me she pretty much doing exactly what Steve's article suggests.
The concern is what a remarkably cumbersome process this appears to be.
Even though I believe her explanation entirely I find the problem to be highly disconcerting as it’s wasting an immense amount of valuable time and inhibiting the production process significantly.
She is producing wonderful results but via an immensely painstaking process fraught with potential for error.  Each page link has to be manually linked to the next by number.  It’s entirely possible to make a mistake and link to the incorrect page thus missing pages.
If she inserts a new page – guess what? All the pages links have to changed manually and double checked yet again.
If she makes a ‘Contents’ section as we do and exports the InDesign file as an interactive PDF all the contents items and links are missing and are therefore blank.
She then has to export the document as a plain PDF and do the job again in Acrobat.
For an extravagantly wealthy company with such extraordinarily expensive software I find this to be entirely incredulous.
Who is the Product Manager for InDesign?
Are they aware of this issue?
What are they doing about it and when will it be done?
Just curious are you guys paid employees or volunteers as this appears to be an official forum and we are new here?
Digital publishing of PDF magazines appears to be an explosive growth market especially for platforms such as the iPad but this primary product for the task appears to be inadequate or ill-conceived.
Is DPS a possible solution or is this more for Apps than PDF production?
    Regards
    Sean
