Buy a Toshiba Vista Home Premium recovery disk, or buy Windows 7?

I just bought a used Satellite L355D-S7810, but without any of the original disks.  The laptop originally had Vista Home Premium 32 bit (and it has the COA sticker for it).  I won't go into a long story.  Suffice it to say I had to wipe the hard drive.  I installed XP because I already had the software, but trying to get all the drivers has turned into a real pain.  So, I am considering two options:
1. Order a Toshiba recovery disc so I can "recover" back to Vista home Premium (32 bit). Cost: ~$30
2. Buy Windows 7 (64-bit).  Cost: ~$180 (For a full version)
Cost-wise, it's a no-brainer.  However, I've never used Vista or "7".  Seems I've heard a lot of complaints about Vista.  Which is easier to work with?  Or, I should ask, which would give the best performance on my Toshiba laptop?
Thanks

Jerry,
Thanks for replying.  I worked on the XP install for hours!  After I got the NIC driver installed, I was able to download most of the other device drivers through the Windows Update web site, and things were going pretty well until I downloaded and installed about 67 "critical" Windows updates.  Big mistake.  After that, the laptop would not boot at all.  I'd see the start-up screen with the Toshiba logo, then it would go to a completely black (although backlit) screen with a blinking "cursor" (really an underscore) in the upper left-hand corner.  After just 3 or 4 beeps... nothing.  Just a black screen.  Nothing else.  No hard drive activity.  Nothing.  I rebooted multiple times to no avail.  I couldn't even get into safe mode.  Finally I tried a Windows XP "repair".  After the repair I could get as far as the Windows logo screen, but then I'd get a blue screen with a long error that went by so fast I couldn't read it.  I have no idea what happened.  I think you are right.  I'll just get the recovery disc and hope it has all the right software.
Thanks,
Chuck

Have original disks for this Toshiba A215.  The hard drive failed so put in new hard drive. Got the missing boot manager message. so a tecn person used a cd and reformated the new hard drive. Still wouldn't run the recovery disks to install to factory defaults.  the Windows Vista sticker still on the computer with the activation code. So borrowed an install disk from a friend, but won't activate. Says it's not a valid activation code.  and still won't recognize my recovery disks. starts to run the recovery program then gives message - cannot enumerate.  What does it want to enumerate??

    cannot enumerate.
Try resetting the BIOS from AHCI mode to IDE or Compatibility or whatever you find there.
Most likely the trouble is caused by a hard disk with advanced-format technology. After restoring, there will be more to do.
Which Satellite A215? Always tell us that. There is a label on the bottom.

  • Will photos created on a 32 bit Windows Vista Home Premium be readable on a Windows 7 64 bit system?

I have around 25,000 photos in jpeg and tiff and in version sets plus some slide shows and blurb books created in the 32 bit system of Windows Vista Home Premium with PSE 10.0 and Premier and have to change to a 64 bit  Windows 7  system since Adobe is discontinuing the Photoshop Elements programs in early April of 2013. Will these photos created in 32 bit be readable and editable in the 64 bit system?

Yes. PSE works on both 32bit and 64 bit systems.
PSE is not being discontinued. The on-line service at Photoshop.com is simply moving to Adobe Revel.

I have only had this lenovo pc for 5 months and it was working perfectly fine before this update. Onekey recovery is not working. I cannot get it to boot from a dvd or cd.  I tried a recovery disc, did not work. I changed the pc to boot from the dvd and that did not work.
If I have it boot normally I get the continous error beeping.
The fact that I am writing this from my 6 year old HP computer makes me rethink my recent purchase of the Lenovo brand.

If you think a windows update caused the problem; are you able to say which update caused the problem?
You could also describe the beep error more precisely before it boots into windows. Or is windows not working at all in normal or safe mode?
    Thanks

  • The system recovery disks I made for my HP dv7-1132 NR running Vista Home Premium 64 bit won't work.

I just bought this laptop and I want to wipe the drive clean. It is an HP dv7-1132 NR with Vista home premium 64 bit but still on Service Pack 1. It came with no system restore disks so I made my own through the System Recovery Manager. Apparently the disks were created without any problems as there were no errors.
When I tried to use the first disk however (by inserting the first disk into the dvd drive and re-starting the computer, Once it has re-booted I get the message:
"This PC is not supported by the system recovery disks. You will not be able to recover this system with these disks"
Can anyone help me help me to either get these discs working or give me another work around that will wipe this hard drive? I am not a techie so my knowledge base is rudimentary. If you can give alot of detail in any possible fixes, that would be great!!!1
Thanks. and Happy 4th of July Americans!!!!

Usually this is caused by missing info in the BIOS and must be corrected by service from HP. Enter BIOS by tapping away at the F10 key immediately after power on. Is all system info there, serial, etc?

  • Recovery disks for my HP Pavilion DV 9500 Windows Vista home premium

Does anyone know where I can find recovery disks for my HP Pavilion DV 9500 Windows Vista home premium?? According to HP, disk pn is 446537-004.

Excuse me for not understanding the solution so well....
So I need to purchase an OS for my computer - like windows 7 ??
And I need to download drivers from hp.com - there is a long list of drivers and they are dependent on the operating system - which ones do i need (all??) and supposedly I need to get a new operating system first??
Could I try to just reload drivers before purchasing a new OS - is that possible ?? maybe it is a driver problem and not an OS problem ?? If this is possible, how do I determine which drivers to download and what order to try to install them??
Sorry that I am not so knowledgeable
    Thanks,

    Hi:
If you can still read the 25 character Microsoft Vista product key on the bottom of your PC, you can make your own plain Vista installation media and use that to at least get the OS on your PC.
Here is how to do that if you can read that key:
Please click on the link below, click on the Windows Reinstallation Guide [27-07-2013] pdf link on the upper left of the page and then read the instructions for doing this starting on page 302.

  • Toshiba Dock or Topbar or whatever it is called on Vista Home Premium Sattelite model P205-S6267

I've a Toshiba Sattelite P205-S6267 running Vista Home Premium (OEM).
When I first bought it, there was something similar to the Windows Sidebar but it was at the top of my screen.  I know it's not the actual Vista Sidebar becase it was originally along the top of my screen and my pokeing around indicates Vista Sidebar doesn't do that.  Furthermore, it had all these white icons for assorted Toshiba utilities for managing hardware and configuring stuff.
At some point, I must have removed it. I have all the CD's and other materials. How do I restore the Toshiba Topbar or what ever it is called?

Those are Toshiba's Hot Key Cards, also known as Flash Cards. See Appendix A of the Satellite P200/P205 Series User's Guide.
You may have turned it off. On the Start menu, it's at Programs > Toshiba > Utilities > Settings for Flash Cards.
Or you may need to reinstall this utility.

  • Satellite A200 - Vista Home Premium to Ultimate upgrading

Hi Guy's back again with a new query.
I'm looking to upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Ultimate...checked out all the so called requirements on the" Windows anytime upgrade" site and I can assure you there are plenty of conflicting ideas about how its all done right down to the fact that I would need an up-grade disk mailed out to me.
Having read a couple of other forums recently, the answer lies in what you guy's may or may not be able to advise me...and the question is:
Does the so called "rescue disk" supplied at purchase, ie the Windows operating system disk...CONTAIN ALL THE "VISTA "AVAILABLE SYSTEMS.....Basic, Home Premium, Business & Ultimate??? and highly unlikely but is it upgrade coded or whatever it is that its meant to be to perform system upgrades?
Many thanks again in anticipation of your kind comments
    Andrew.

    Hi Jimi,
Thanks for your comments and yes I realise its a user to user forum but you just never know who's floating around.
And I certainly am not confusing the 2 disks Toshiba/MS hence my question in the first place, it only seemed logical to me that Toshiba may have all the OS for Vista on the one CD rather than preparing many different recovery disc's given the volume and variations of the systems they sell.
The serial and key required for updating can be installed onto your system separately after buying same from MS its just a matter then of whether the recovery disc itself has the operating system of the update you require......as for example does the disc an other manufacturer supply with their pre-installed software when you purchase one of their systems.
Thanks again for your kind thoughts and comments and I will investigate further.
    Andrew.

  • Satellite L355D-S7901 (PSLE8U-02P01D) s/n ********* - Vista Home Premium SP2 32-bit

Long story short; back in February of last year, some "Shop" downstate replaced the HDD in this unit, and evidently installed from a "Master" disk (Non-tosh); failed to install the Tosh model specific drivers, and didn't dupe the old HDD (which was apparently only failing, not yet failed), so no Recovery partition or recover disks, either home-made or Tosh.
First question (since Toshibas phone support may as well not exist, and the Recovery set purchasing page doesn't provide answers until AFTER the purchase); how fast is expidited fulfillment within CONUS?
Q2:  Is there a machine/model specific list of the latest drivers/utilities/Apps?
The support page is kludgy at best and seems to list ALL drivers since day one for all variations of a given model.  I'd rather not spend the time weeding through ALL of them to find just those that apply.
I've salvaged all of the data, and I'm pig-headedly trying to clean this beast up and replace corrupted files, but failing the ability to do an "in-place upgrade" for repair purposes (as in XP), it may come to doing a fresh install.
This individual has to head back off to her university by month's end, so I'm up against it without the Recovery set.
    TIA!

What are you upgrading to/from? As you say, you have a store bought Windows Vista install disk(s). Also, it appears as if you have Vista OS already on the laptop. Maybe I'm missing something.
The existing installation of Vista Home Premium SP2 on the HDD that is mostly functional needs some repairs and "sfc /scannow" can't do those repairs because the recovery partition was not recreated when some putz replaced the HDD nearly a year and a half ago.
It's not truly an "upgrade" as such; that's just the term used.
I'm wanting to do what's known as an "in-place upgrade"; essentially, it simply replaces the Windows files without affecting your existing applications or data, at least that's how it worked with previous versions of Windows.
You're simply directing it to upgrade your Vista Home Premium SP2 32-bit to Vista Home Premium SP2 32-bit, repairing itself along the way.
You then need to do all Windows updates that succeeded the printing of THAT DVD and reregister, but that's a minor nuisance.
From the image you have provided, it appears as if the Vista installation disk does not recognize the hd on the laptop, and is asking for a driver so it can detect it.
Precisely!  I need to know what the name of that driver for this particular model Toshiba is so that I can download it, feed it to that prompt, and proceed from there, but the driver d/l page for this Tosh doesn't appear to list anything specifically for the AHCI controller (at least nothing that I can discern).
What happens if you have the Vista install disk in the drive and you start your laptop? You can use the Windows install disk to do a repair (is that what you are trying to do?).
That will supplant the current installation, not repair it!  All of the existing data, settings, and applications will be erased.  You can only perform an "in-place upgrade" from within Windows.

  • Vista Home Premium - Error code 80070490 - Windows update

    Computer - Satellite 200
Operating system - Vista Home Premium (service pack 1)
Problem - When I try to update from Windows Update (both manual and automatic) I get error code 80070490
I have tried - System restore, downloading and paying for "RegCure" and following instructions on Microsoft forum all without success.
The computer was supplied with a recovery disk which does not have "repair" facility.
If you have a solution that does not involve a full re-load I would be very grateful
Please make instructions comprehensible to a non-techno!
    Thank you

This error may occur if the older Windows Update engine files cannot be
replaced by Windows Update Agent 3.0 (7.0.6000.374).
To troubleshoot this issue, I suggest we first reset permission and
    reinstall Windows Update Agent 3.0.
    Step 1: Reset permission
    ================
    1. Please download the subinacl.msi file from the following link and save
the installation patch onto the Desktop:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...inityDownloads
    2. Please go to the Desktop and double click the downloaded file.
    3. Please select the C:\Windows\System32 folder as the Destination Folder
during the installation. Later we will use this tool to reset the permission
    settings on the current machine.
Note: If UAC (User Account Control) window is prompted for permission to
    continue, please click Continue.
    4. Click the Start Button, in the Start Search bar, type: "notepad" (without
    quotes) and press Enter.
    5. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad
    window:
    @echo off
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f
    @Echo =========================
    @Echo Finished.
    @Echo =========================
    @pause
    6. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose
Save when you are prompted to save the file. Type "reset.bat" as the file
name and choose Desktop from the left panel as the save location.
    7. Refer to the Desktop and right click the reset.bat file, then choose "Run
    as administrator."
    8. You will see a DOS-like window processing.
NOTE: It may take several minutes, please be patient. When it is finished,
you will be prompted with the message: "Finished, press any key to continue".
Step 2: Reinstall Windows Update Agent 3.0
    ===========================
    1. Please download the file from the following link:
    Windows Vista (32bit)
    http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe
    Windows Vista (64bit)
    http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x64.exe
    2. Save the file to D: drive.
Note: Please select a drive where Windows Vista was not loaded because the
file cannot be launched directly from the system root directory.
    3. Click Start->Run, type: "D:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce"
(without quotations) and then press Enter to install the Windows Update
    engine.
Note: There is a space between "D:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" and
    "/wuforce"
Now, let's run Windows Update again.

  • Hp pavillion a6500f product#KQ495AA-ABA windows vista - home premium 64 bit Won't boot

Hi - I cannot boot my desktop hp pavillion.  error message says put in an installation disk - don't have.  and also says file 32/boot missing or corrupt.  tried recovery group of three disks but doesn't do a thing????  Don't want to loose data what is best route to take?  thanks

    Hi xbill,
What is the exact message you have?
So far I understand you have a corrupted windows vista with an error message mentioning a missing or corrupted somthing32 file.
Your data should not be impacted at the moment (based on what you wrote).
What you may want to do at the moment is get a windows vista home premium 64 as it may be used to recover the missing/corrupted file(s).
An external hard drive to backup your files and finally a bootable CD to allow you to start your machine to backup your files.
But the first thing we need before we go any further is the exact error message.

  • Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit) is slow. Which start-up services should run?

I recently had to use system restore and make a few changes to get my system running again.  Ooops. I now have a very slow computer whereas it was working fine before.  I haven't recently installed any new software or hardware and suspect that some essential start-up services may have been disabled, stopped or set to manual while some other unused services may have been set to start, automatic or automatic (delayed).
Can someone please direct me to another thread (if available) or list which start-up services should be in which state?
    Thank you!
    System details:
     ~ HP IQ818A
     ~ Windows Vista Home Premium
      ~ Service Pack 1
     ~ 4GB RAM
     ~ 64-bit
     ~ avast! Anti-virus is active

    Sydney,
I don't have an IQ818 at the moment, all I have is an IQ506T - from last fall.  I had just done a recovery of it.
Note:  1) I did choose to NOT perform automatic updates, 2) I haven't yet configured Norton, and 3) I haven't turned off TouchSmart from running in the background.
This isn't exactly your system, but it would be somewhat close.  Your safest bet would be to recover and start over, but here goes with the services listings.  Please note its comma delimited - you can look at it better with something like Excel, Works or Open Office.
    Good luck on this.

  • 64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium compatibilty?

I'm looking to purchase a new PC that runs the 64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium. I'm wondering if my older programs, Premiere Pro 1.5, Photoshop 7, and Dreamweaver MX 2004 will run in the new system. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Gee, Phyllis I've read on microsofts own site that CS3 was 64 bit vista compatable and CS4 was native. I'm still on Photoshop 7 so I can't help you but on photoshop re-installs that load with messages about missing files , I search in my back up folders for the previous computer where it ran fine and copy it into my photoshop program folder.
If you google the exact missing file message you may find a site that charges for it. I'd be scared to do that, though.
Bob, if I grasp it correctly 64 bit compatible means "EUREAKA" the software runs on 64 bit vista in at least one case so we'll call it vista compatible. Vista 64 bit native means software will use bigger chunks of data and access more RAM available because it's been re-writen / coded and designed for it.
I had my old dell inspiron 8100 laptop start to BSD occasionally. I do a lot of photoshop and picture storage and have 2 big HP dual xeon 800 FSB workstations with XP Pro and 4GB of RAM (3.5 showing) for sit in one spot work. I broke down and bought a new laptop last september to replace the dell.
Got a gamers laptop and changed the OS to Ultimate 64 bit from Home Premium 64 bit and changed a single weirdly partitioned 200 GB 7200 RPM SATA drive to dual 320 GB 7200 RPM SATA HD's.Had to buy Partition Manager from Paragon to partition drives like I wanted (OS and programs on separate spindle from paging file and scratch disk)and it had to boot in a DOS mode to do partitioning succesfully and worked fine on Vista 64 bit. Norton Anti - virus works and was listed as 64 bit compatible when I bought it. Acronis True Image 11 home clearly states "Supports 64 bit CPU and windows Vista" so I guess they do or they don't................Got refunds from lavasoft and spyware blaster they both claimed Vista 32 and 64 bit but were quick to give refunds. Would not load or install.
As you can see I'm trying to adapt to vista and 64 bit so I'm used to it when I get new Vista workstations with more RAM for Photoshop. I've e-mailed Roxio support and have been issued a ticket # for my original problem. Let's see what they say..............Raymond

  • System Restore will not run on Vista Home Premium

I cannot get system restore to run  on my T61 using Vista Home Premium I get messages like:
"The Restore point could not be created for the following reason: The writer experienced a transient error. If the backup process is retried the error may not reoccur". It did.
I also get "Rescue and Recovery Backup Service stopped working and was closed. A problem caused the applicaion to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available." It did not.
I have also been advised no restore points are available.
The net effect is I cannot use System Restore at all!
Has anyone else had a problem like this with system restore?  Lenovo has been no help.I have had a number of Dell computers and this is my first (and last) Lenovo. When it was quite new and the problem occurred , I contacted them but they just blew me off..
    RHM

So i assume that your T61 originally came with Vista Home premium installed??? Did you make the Recovery Media disks when you first got your machine??? If not call Lenovo up and obtain those disks, and then use them to reinstall your service partition and your OS.
