Buy iDefrag or restore the system via TimeMachine? What's the better/faster way?

Hi there!
I'm thinking about either buying iDefrag or restoring my system.
As I read on several websites there is no need to defrag Mac OS X because HFS+ automatically does (more or less). But: if the free space on the HD goes below 10% the OS can no longer defrag itself even if you delete files and free space increases again. Is that true at all?
As I had only 40GB left out of 500GB I am now thinking about what to do. Is there any need to defrag or restore (iDefrag: 27€ / system restore: just some time)? Would any of those two options speed up my Mac? Or should I do nothing? I'm not sure if the Mac is slower than it should be at all.
Thanks for your opinios and evaluations.

  • Vid quality degraded after updating but it plays much more smoothly with minimal buffering. Is there any way I can restore the better resolution, or toggle between the two?

    OS:Windows XP
Also, before updating, I used to go into the browser cache and copy the temporary file for a video (detected by refreshing the cache window) to another folder when the vid was finished playing, then I would add the .flv extension and *snap* I have the video saved. The cool thing about this was that I could skip forward in a video such as a news program to the segment I want, whereas with video downloaders I must save the whole thing. Since updating, the cache folder is full of dozens of folders, which each contain folders, which each contain multiple temp files, so it's MUCH harder to snatch the temp file without using the search feature specifying the date and size. The cool thing about this was that I could skip forward in a video such as a news program to the segment I want, whereas with video downloaders I must save the whole thing. I'd be grateful if anyone has any suggestions regarding this, but my main question is about video quality. For informational videos, the poor resolution and murky sound is a tolerable trade-off for having no delay or buffering, but for concert videos this is intolerable and it would be worth waiting for better quality. Is there any way to adjust the quality if the site itself doesn't offer that option?

Sounds like you did this on the fly.

    M just sets a marker
Not sure if either are intended for on the fly during playback .

My late 2011 Macbook Pro is not working properly it is very slow and extremely painful to use, I went to a Genius Bar appointment, they were not helpful at all and just told me to go off and reboot my Mac and then restore via TimeMachine. I dont know how to do this. I am extremely displeased with Apple at the moment, can someone please help me?

Your problem description is generalized and non-specific. I would make another appointment at the Apple store and insist they help you execute their suggested fixes.
Incidentally, if you search this site, Apple has excellent articles re: restoring a system.

  • Restoring my System with Time Machine to a new HD without the Snow Leopard DVD

    Hi there,
I changed my HD in my MacBook Pro to a bigger one and then wanted to Restore the System via Time Machine onto that new HD. Sadly I dont have the Snow Leopard DVD that was coming with the MacBook. Though I have another Snow Leopard DVD, that I purchased earlier for my older Mac. Now the Problem:
When I try to Boot the Macbook Pro from the older Snow Leopard DVD it always freezes and says: "You have to restart your Macbook. Press the power button until it switches off and then press the button again". But iwill not boot from the DVD.
Is there another possibility to Restore my System from my Time Machine Backup to the new HD?
    Kind Regards

You can't use a machine specific OS X install disk with another model of Mac.
It has to do with hardware drivers being on one disk and not applicable to another machine, why you get the kernel panic.
Is there another possibility to Restore my System from my Time Machine Backup to the new HD?
No. You need the OS X install disk.
Choices depending on what your machine is:
1: If your machine with the missing OS X install disk originally came with 10.6.3 or later, call Apple for machine specific replacement disks, there will be a fee of course. That's the only ones that will work.
2: If your machine originally came with 10.6.2 or earlier, you can choose to buy the 10.6.3 retail disk from Apple online, however it contains no free iLife. It comes faster.
3: If your machine originally came with 10.0 - 10.6.2, and you want the free iLife, then order the machine specific versions from Apple, however it might take longer.
4: If your machine originally came with 10.5, and your now on 10.6.x via the 10.6.3 retail disk, you can extract the free iLife from the 10.5 disks using Pacifist from CharlesSoft if you don't want to buy iLife.
You will need this disk regardless in case you need to #18 Reinstall Just OS X or #20 Erase and Install OS X or perform #4-#6 repair proceedures:
Step by Step to fix your Mac
    Is there another possibility...
Yes, once you have gotten a new OS X install disk, consider making bootable clones.
It's software that can clone your entire OS X drive/partition (no Bootcamp or Filevaulted) to another external drive and you can easily hold the option key to boot from it.

  • After formatting my HD and eventually restore my system from a backup on Time Capsule, will I still have access to my old backups as normally used to do via Time Machine?

I have a Time Capsule (4th Gen) and my backups on it, I need to completely erase my hard drive. My question is: after formatting my MacBook HD and eventually restore my system (OS X 10.6.8) from a backup on Time Capsule, will I still have access to my old* backups as normally used to do via Time Machine?
*(-and to the newer backups- if I had not restored my system from the last backup).
    THANKS

That's a good question. Technically, Time Machine should make a new backup but not erase any old backups. But if there isn't sufficient space on the backup drive, then I'm not sure if Time Machine will simply warn you or just go ahead and remove old backups to make room for the new ones.
In any case, the new backup should have a different backup folder on the backup drive. That's my understanding. You can learn more at pondini.org.

Rosetta can have a 2GB RAM "tax" to manage PowerPC code as well as how that affects performance.
I think real world performance shows both statements to be wrong; consider this:
If that were the case, how come Apple does not include that information in its Snow Leopard installation requirements, since Rosetta is an optional install?
Also, running a PowerPC app on an 2011 i7 Mac with Snow Leopard will run faster than running that PowerPC app on a PowerPC Mac.

  • I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on external drive.  I'd like to migrate only the internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive then just plug in iPhoto library drive.  Is this going be a problem?

I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive.  Both drives are backed up on Time Machine.  I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac.  This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data.  Will this work using Set Up Assistant?

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD.  Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select.   Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows.  Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items.  That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

  • How do I restore the entire system from a Time Machine external drive?

    Hello everyone,
Up front - I have searched through numerous threads but have not yet been able to solve my problem - even though it is presumably easy for many.
So... I had to bring in my late 2009 27" iMac to Apple to replace the hard drive - mine was one of the thousands affected by the defective Seagate 1 TB disk recall. I was told that the disk would be cloned, but nevertheless I made a full system backup with Time Machine to a dedicated external hard drive.
A week later and I now have my iMac back - but when I boot, I only see a white screen with a pointer, so it appears that the drive was not cloned - but that I now have a blank 1 TB disk, correct?
I have also tried booting with the external drive attached, thinking that the dedicated Time Machine external drive would allow me to boot directly from it and restore the system if need be - I booted with CMD+R, tried again with ALT ... no luck.
And I cannot find my Mac OS DVDs...
So... is the drive blank, or am I missing something here?
If so, how can I boot from the external Time Machine drive, or is that not possible either?
Any pointers greatly appreciated, thanks very much in advance.

Call Apple to get replacement DVDs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
    1. Insert the Mac OS X DVD and press C key while your computer is starting.
    2. Go to Utilities menu and restore the backup.
You should have made a clone instead of the backup because Apple gives the hard disk without OS X

  • Hi, my iphone 5 encountered an unknown error while updating to iOS 7 via itunes and is now stuck in recovery mode and prompts me to restore the phone when I connect it to itunes but then I would lose all my data. Any suggestions please?

Hi, my iphone 5 encountered an unknown error while updating to iOS 7 via itunes and is now stuck in recovery mode and prompts me to restore the phone when I connect it to itunes but then I would lose all my data. I DO NOT have any back ups on itunes. Is there anyway to get out of recovery mode without restoring or recover data after a restore?
Or any other suggestions please? Thanks

As pdroth said, you should have gotten a backup made when you started the update of iOS. If you cannot find a backup, and the phone is in recovery mode, there are no futher suggestions to make. To get the phone working again you have to restore. You cannot force a backup at this time since it is already in recovery mode. It will not allow anything else but a restore at this point.

  • [HP Expert Day] "You are not able to restore this system with the media"

    Welcome to HP Experts day!
I've got a long-standing problem since last year. Let's see if you can solve this!
I'll get straight to the point :
I am unable to perform recovery on my system. This is the error message :
It's a USB recovery media created with the HP recovery media utility on the same laptop. Tested to work correctly before I sent it for RMA on my SSD. It initially was running on a micron SSD. When I got it back, it was a samsung SSD instead, according to some benchmark results.
Laptop : HP Envy Spectre XT 13-2018TU
P.S I've already opened another thread on this last year.
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Recovery/Unable-to-boot-from-USB-recovery-media/m-p/2197929#M1...
    But they were stumped.

I had this exact same issue on a Spectre XT Pro Ultrabook.
The original SSD failed and I was sent a replacement, was fortunate enough to be able to create a Recovery USB stick using the wizard in Windows. When booting from USB I received the message "You are not able to restore this system with the media".
SOLUTION: You must NOT use the Recovery USB stick in any USB3.0 port (labelled SS). Using another USB port prevented this exact error message from appearing and I was able to complete the system restore process.
I hope this helps someone, I signed up and posted here especially for this reason!

  • HT201250 When getting a replacement Seagate hard drive for my Imac through Apple, will they restore my system to it's current state? Or will I have to do it myself though Time Machine? Will Time machine restore all the programs as well?

Apple has determined that certain Seagate 1TB hard drives used in 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac systems may fail. These systems were sold between October 2009 and July 2011.
Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) will replace affected hard drives free of charge.
Will this replacement program restore my system to its current state after the new drive is installed? If not, will I have to have all my original disks to re-install all the programs on my current computer, or will Time Machine restore them as well?

Most of them will tell you to backup your data.
Time Machine is nice, but unless you are interested in archival backup, Carbon Copy Cloner is a lot easier to recover from:

Hi, did you ever solve this problem?
My 1 year old -- ha! one month out of warranty -- iPhone 4 has been having a nearly identical problem over the past few days.
It started by dying completely so I had the battery replaced, thinking it was simply battery issue.
It then worked again for a moment but started doing exactly what you describe, going through a reset cycle (longer than 30 seconds but who's counting). And it felt quite warm.
Did hard reset, plugged into wall charger and MBP USB but the new battery wouldn't even get a full charge (a whopping 92% after nearly two days). It would even lose battery when plugged in if I opened an app. And all the while plugged in, if I left the phone on, it would cycle through these resets. So I turned it off to try to charge it.
Now suddenly, it's dead again. Totally black, and hard reset does nothing. Up until two days ago there was nothing wrong whatsoever with this phone! And I hadn't even installed a new app that could be the root of the issue. No idea whatsoever what caused this.
Any help would be much appreciated!!
