Buy Mountain Lion on friends mac, install on my wiped MBP?
Can I buy Mountain Lion on a friends computer under MY apple id and install it to a completely wiped mac book pro? I would do it by using the wireless download/install when lion in bought under my apple id (if that is possible). When I run reinstall it asks for mountain lion and my snow leopard cd will not work regardless of attempts.
You said that he is running Leopard, and the App Store needs Snow Leopard, so he has to upgrade to Snow Leopard.
First, open > About this Mac and check Version. If it's 10.6, he has Snow Leopard, so he doesn't have to purchase it. Check if the computer is supported > http://support.apple.com/kb/sp575 Buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard Then, make a backup, insert the DVD and upgrade.
The disc will install 10.6.3, so go to > Software Update to update to 10.6.8, which has the App Store, so login with your Apple ID and purchase Mountain Lion. Note that you will only be able to purchase Mountain Lion if his Mac is compatible > http://www.apple.com/osx/specs
Also, he can't use the Mountain Lion copy that you downloaded onto it because it's registered to your Apple ID

Buy mountain lion without my mac
My nephew installed a fake copy of mountain lion on my macbook pro then tried to delete it. Now the HDD is erased to include the recovery. My mac did not come with a recovery disk. I want to purchase mountain lion so I can reinstall OSX but I cant find any way to buy it without me being on my mac. Is there a recovery file I can locate or a way to buy the legit app without my mac running properly?
ThanksHave you tried plugging the Mac to have wired Internet access, then holding down Command R prior to the startup chime? If your Mac is reasonably recent, it should attempt to do an Internet-based Recovery Mode boot from Apple's servers, not requiring the use of the now-blank hard drive.
If/when that occurs, go straight into "Reinstall...". The Mac will have identified itself with Apple's servers thru its serial #, from which the OS version you are entitled to will be made available.
If that doesn't work, you will have to find a Mac of the same model and OS to construct a Recovery Mode USB Drive that you can boot off from. Worst case, you have to schedule a visit to the Bar at the Store and have the Geniuses do their magic (which is basically doing what I mentioned above).

i have a macbook air mid 2011 with that came with Lion. if i format my mac the recovery partition is downloading the latest version of Lion and installs it. will i be able to do the same but with mountain Lion? i like clean installions of OS and not updating old one to a new with from the OS itself.
thanks! You would first need to buy Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store and install it. During the initial install it may give you the option of running Disk Utility to wipe the drive it is being installed to (Not sure as I have never done it as ML is not available). If it doesn't give you that option then you would need to install if over the top of Lion and when doing so it shoild update the Recovery HD partition to work only with ML. Then using the Recovery HD WIPE the main partition and then Reinstall ML.
You could also use the downloaded ML files to create your own USB thumb drive of the install files then use that to wipe the drive and reinstall.
In any event the install routine should update the R-HD to work, download, only with ML. -

Can I buy mountain lion in another Macbook computer, and then Re install it in mine?
I'm stock in the re install mode of the Mountain Lion system and I obviosly didn't buy it for this Macbook, and I was wondering if I can purchase Mountain Lion in on of my friends Macbook, and then install it in mine, with my apple ID of course. Thank you.Well, I can check with mine when it need to be updated and then I can signed with my ID again on his mac to update it, right? Just wondering if it's not going to create any conflicts with other software's, specially with iCloud and iTunes, because of his iPhone and iPad.
Thanks for the answer.

No, not if you bought it as an upgrade option.

Open the Mac App Store on the other Mac and in the Quick Links sign into your account. See if the Mountain Lion purchase is among hidden apps in the iCloud area of your account info.

Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

After installing the mountain lion on my Mac at startup a stop sign appears and i cant loguin or do anything.. What should i do?
If you mean the "no entry" sign, a circle with a slash through it, then you need to reinstall Mountain Lion.
Boot into the Recovery HD by holding down cmd-r at startup tone until gray screen.
From there, reinstall Mountain Lion. -
My wifi is very slow after installing mountain lion on my Mac book pro
My wifi is very very slow after installing mountain lion on my MacBook pro.
What can I do?Ha ha, I misread that as "My wife is very slow after installing mountain lion on my Mac book pro"
BTW on my MBPro (late 2009 with max RAM) Mountain Lion runs very well with no slowing down. -
I want to install a clean copy of Mountain Lion not an update from my current version which is 10.7.5.
I do not want to keep my old program files. I already have my personal info backed up.
ThanksIf you don’t have it yet, get Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store but do not install it yet (orredownload it if you did install it)
Create a bootable install drive for OS X Mountain Lion, make one manually with a USB drive oruse the LionDiskMaker tool to automate the process with a USB or DVD
With the boot installer drive connected to the Mac, reboot and hold down the Option key
Choose the “Mac OS X Installer” startup volume from the boot menu
Select “Disk Utility” and choose the hard drive you wish to format, click the “Erase” tab, and then pull down the “Format” menu and select “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” as the type, name the drive if you wish
Click the “Erase” button and let the drive format – this is the point of no return
When finished, quit out of Disk Utility and now select the “Install Mac OS X” option from the menu
Choose your freshly formatted hard drive and install Mountain Lion
When the Mac reboots you will have a clean installation of Mac OS X 10.8 to work with.
I did this last week and its working fine -
Brand new Mac, had to erase drive through disk utility as time machine back up failed on initial setup, USB cable popped out Now can only access disk utility as won't load to log in screen. The only has the option in disc utility is to re-install Mountain Lion which my Mac won't allow or loading another time machine back up but after an hour of it processing, that didn't resolve the issue either! The time machine back up is the latest back up of my Mac Book Pro which was using OS X Maverix. I'm guessing I'm going to have to take my Mac to the store but that would be a hassle so does anyone have any ideas?
Follow this guide using another Mac.
Insert your newly created Mavericks USB into you Mac, press the power button and then hold down 'option,' until it gives you an option to boot from the USB. You will then be able to erase the internal disk with Disk Utility and reinstall Mavericks straight after.
After that you should be able to use Migration Assistant to restore your applications and user data. -
I downloaded Mountain Lion on my Mac Book Pro but when I go to install it, it says "OS X cannot be installed on Lion." Any advice?
Right-Click the "Install OS X Mountain Lion" installer under /Applications and select Show Package Contents and drill down through the folders; Contents/SharedSupport. Drag the InstallESD.dmg file to your desktop. Grab an 8GB USB stick as the file is 4.35GB's and might not fit on a 4GB USB stick. Then mount the DMG by double-clicking it and stick your 8GB USB stick in and that will mount then you can use Disk Utility to restore the DMG to the 8GB USB stick. Then shutdown and reboot while holding the Option key and select the USB drive. See if that will let you install Mountain Lion.
One more thing, you have to format the USB Stick first and ensure it's set to GUID mode (under Partition tab Options button) or it won't boot.
