BUY NOW OR BUY LATER. Current Quads vs Intel G5

I'm wondering if it is worth buying a Quad G5 before the Intel versions come out.
With the Intel chips, is all my current software going to be compatible or is there going to be a nightmare of upgrading involved? Will the speed differences really be worth it or will it be marginal?
I currently work with FCP but will be purchasing Shake soon. Will this complicate things? If I get Shake now will I have to purchase an upgrade version for an Intel Mac?
Thanks in advance.

Also, here is an excerpt from Larry Jordan's Newsletter, that could help your decision:
For now, I recommend you take a wait-and-see attitude on upgrading. Hold off until the new versions are out and initial reliability reports are available.
Also, keep in mind that Apple has not announced any PowerMacs using the Intel chip. They have announced that all their hardware will be Intel-based by the end of 2006. My suspicion is that PowerMacs will be near the end of the conversion cycle, which means that it is still several more months until we have both software and hardware that is Intel-ready.
For all these reasons, while I have lots of enthusiasm for the future, there's nothing I'm doing differently right now.

  • Best RAM to buy for a 27" 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7?

    Dear all
I'm brand new to Apple computers and would therefore appreciate any advice you can offer relating to RAM.
    I will soon be purchasing a 27" 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 complete with 2TB hard drive.
I also plan on purchasing 2x4gb RAM sticks separately but from reviews that I've read I see that not all ram is created equally...
Thus far I have discovered the following brands: Kingston, Komputerbay and Crucial. I would be most obliged if someone could let me know what the best brand is for the ram... I have found Komputerbay to be the cheapest but I've read a review from someone who said they didn't find it to be a good performer so that made me think it's best to pay a bit more.
Thank you for reading and I look forward to hearing your replies
    Kind regards
    Kate
P.S. I'm based in the UK

    Dear all
Thank you for your prompt responses - most appreciated!
Roger, I was particularly pleased with your answer as last night (after much internet research) I decided to go with Crucial... They were also offering a 10% off 'one day only' discount which seemed too good to miss! I purchased the RAM for a good price: £198 including discount for 2x4gb sticks - the same RAM averaged £250 on Amazon.
I will be ordering the iMac on Friday. Doubtless I will be back online thereafter to clarify that I have installed the RAM correctly; I haven't ever installed RAM before but given how easy it looks and the cost savings involved I thought I'd have a crack at it!
In total I will be running with 12gb RAM - no idea whether I actually need that much or not but I'd rather buy the best of everything from the outset so that I don't need to tweak things at a later date... Also thought a high amount of RAM would be advantageous given the screen size etc.
    Again, thanks to you all.

  • App Store: buy now, download later?

    hi all,
I don't have access to a WiFi hotspot today, only 3G.  There is an app on sale that is larger than 20MB.  So, I can't buy it.  The sale is today only.  Is there a way to buy now and download later?
I'd also like to buy iPad apps from my iPhone and download them when I get back home to my Mac.
    Thanks,
    Steven

If you purchase it and it tells you that you can't download it because the file is too large, it will just wait in your download queue but you will have been charged already.  When you are back in a WiFi zone, you can then go into App store > Updates > Purchased and tap on the app to download it.

  • Can I buy Photoshop Elements now and download later?

Now I work on an old Mac but I'm waiting for my new Mac.
Can I buy Photoshops Elements now (it's a good price now) and download later, maybe over 1 or 2 weeks?

Sure. The download version is the same as the trial (not talking about the app store version, which is a completely different thing), so you can always download the trial and enter your serial number to convert it to a working version.
If you buy the app store version (which is usually more expensive and also has more restrictions on it), you can reinstall it at any time by going to the Purchased tab in the app store.

  • Buy now, download and install later?

Can I buy the Photoshop cc and lightroom 5 offer (the one that runs out after the 31st of december), now, in order to get the discount? But wait with the download and installation process until I receive my new MacBook Pro next month?

    yes.
or, you can buy now and install on your current computer AND install on your new one in one month.
all adobe single user licenses allow two concurrent installations/activations.  if you no longer want/need the installation on your old computer, just sign out of your creative cloud app and you'll maintain your two installations/activations.

  • Hi folks, my mothers 40th next week and im looking to buy an iphone for her now and pay later. I see its available but will i be granted the loan on here ? really need help with this . thanks folks

Hi folks its my mothers 40th next week and im looking to get an iphone4s or 5 from apple and then pay back monthly as in buy now pay later . i do not want contract . Im only 19 and cant afford to buy one right away although i can pay monthly back to apply if i was to get the iphone. Help needed here and thank use

This is Apple's financing program in the US if you want to buy an iPhone without a carrier subsidy:
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/finance/instant_credit_page
Whether you could qualify I can't say. And as Lawrence said, even without a contract the plans from the carriers are expensive, so you will need to consider whether you or your mother can afford the monthly ree.
    Regards.

  • I already own LR and PS but my options show "buy now" or 'download trial" neither of which applies to me?

I'm embarrassed to admit that while I started my monthly membership with adobe CC last year, I haven't utilized it until now.  I currently have LR3 and have PS5 and wanted to update.  I am not sure I fully understand how to use my membership as the desktop apps within my CC account only allow me to 'start trial" which I don't need b/c I own it, or "download now" to buy it which I don't need b/c I own it (smile).  I just want to upgrade.
    Please inform.
    thanks!

  • My retail copy of PSE 12 and PE 12 loaded sucessfully but now won't load - says buy now!

It specifically says my trial has expired and shows me a 'Buy Now Button'.
    1. I never had a trial copy!
    2. I loaded from a retail DVD and input the serial numbers, which were accepted and the wizard said both products were loaded sucessfully!
    3. After the first load I wwas able to start PSE 12. But as it was late, I just shut it down thinking job done!
What do I do now - I uninstalled them both, then rebooted.  Then reloded both products and rebooted again [like the first time]. Same problem it seems to think I had a trial which is expired.
I tried this withthe disc in the DVD and without - just incase it was smart and looked to see if therre was a product  in the DVD drive.
There seems nowhere to go to .
I am in the UK and I don't think there is support for Adobe products?
I can't go back to Version 9 as I do not have the serial numbers. Basically Ver 9 came loaded on a Sony laptop -- and Sony can't give me a serial number!!
    Any help appreciated.

Many people have had this problem and yes, it works.
But if you believe you'll do better with adobe support, you can find support info for your region by going to adobe.com and looking at the very bottom of the page:
Click Contact Adobe, then on the next page you'll see a link for Customer Support. Click that, choose Photoshop Elements, choose Serial number problems or whatever it says, and then go straight to "I still need help" and you'll see a place to start a chat session with an agent. Adobe does not offer email support.

    Hi David,
I got a gigadesign 1.467 single processor upgrade for my tired 'ol G4 466 about a year ago. I paid around $450 at the time and now they have a 1.8 single for $299!
I have zero bad things to say about the upgrade. Easy to install (although a little nerve wracking!) and it's been running hassle free ever since. It's given me the juice to take advantage of Space Designer as well as keeping up with my CPU sucking Native Instruments software.
I did plenty of research as far as compatibility before comitting to the upgrade and have had zero issues.
Obviously a new computer is the next step but that processor upgrade has kept me chugging along enough to stay in the game thus far.

  • To buy or not to buy now......

I need to buy a new laptop since my sons is on it last leg. I was trying to hold off til Sept when they announce the new models????? I think! After reading the posts I'm unsure of buying now since there still seem to be so many unresolved issues. I know that things inly get better and cheaper buut the need is here! Let me know how your experience has been and any thought that you have. Thanks for your help! Jim

No doubt other MacBook Pro owners will contribute their opinions, but I'd like to set a bit of perspective for you. These forums are intended for people to come here and post their problems, so by nature what you're going to see will indeed be problems. The many thousands of MBP owners who are having no troubles have little reason to post to a technical support bulletin board, so just reading here will give you a skewed perspective on the issues. Quoting another regular contributor to the Discussions, "Trying to judge Macs by this forum is like trying to judge the health of a community by looking at the hospital ER".
There can be problems with any system and yours could fail at some point. The strong likelihood, though, is that you'll have no problems with your system whatsoever, particularly if you take care to give it a proper environment - low static, high quality power protection (no $15 hardware store special surge protectors), etc. - power problems are the number one cause of chronic computer problems. I've owned at least eleven Macs since Macs first appeared, and have only had a hardware problem with one (a bad hard drive in a Mac SE more years ago than I care to admit).
As to future revisions, there's no guarantee that there will be any revisions to the MacBook Pro in September. There have been rumors, but most rumors are found to be false.
So make your decision based on what's available, not what might appear at some point in the future. If you need a new system now, get one of the current MacBook Pros. The odds are that it will give you no problems at all.

  • Still no way to buy extra activations under a current cloud account...

    boo! my chat today...
second(s) or longer as there are 1 customer(s) in line ahead of you.
You are now chatting with 'Vinayak'
Vinayak: Hello! Welcome to Adobe Customer Service.
    Vinayak: Hi David.
Vinayak: May I please have your email address registered with Adobe while I review your request?
    David Weisenbarger: [email protected]
Vinayak: Thank you for email address.
Vinayak: I understand that you need the extra license for the creative cloud subscription, am I correct?
    David Weisenbarger: yes
    Vinayak: Thank you for confirming.
Vinayak: I will be glad to check and help you with this issue.
    David Weisenbarger: thanks
Vinayak: May I have the order number of the subscription?
    David Weisenbarger: one second
    Vinayak: Sure.
    David Weisenbarger: DSSY********************
Vinayak: Thank you for the order number.
Vinayak: May I know on how many systems the product is working successfully right now?
David Weisenbarger: I currently use it on one school notebook and one home pc successfully. I have a new third pc at my parents house I need to activate the software on now.
Vinayak: According to the End User License Agreement (EULA) law, it is recommended to install the Adobe Software on only two computers and that is mentioned on the End User License Agreement when installing the Software provided the Software is not used simultaneously.
Vinayak: However, you can install the Software on the third Computer by de-activating the Software from one of the older one and then install it on the new one so that you can avoid any error message while activating the Software.
David Weisenbarger: I am aware. I am actually interested in paying extra for a third activation ability.
David Weisenbarger: If not available, I will have to just buy another cloud subscription.
David Weisenbarger: it would be better to have them all under my one account
Vinayak: In this case you need to buy another subscription with the different adobe account as there is no option to buy two subscriptions in one account.
David Weisenbarger: in that case, please put this in as a feature request to buy additional activations under a current cloud subscription. I am sure many people want/expect this.
Vinayak: In this case I will provide you the link to contact the sales team over phone so that they will be glad to assist you in this regard.
    Vinayak: Please click here.
Vinayak: Did you get the link?
Vinayak: Please click on the sales tab to locate the sales number.
    David Weisenbarger: thank you

Thank you for posting David. I think this may be possible with Creative Cloud Team once available but I created a feature request on your behalf here too:

  • I buy the new imac,late 2012 with a hard-drive 3TB and i want to change with another hard-drive 1TB....where i can buy?

    i buy the new imac,late 2012 with a hard-drive 3TB and i want to change with another hard-drive 1TB....where i can buy?

It's also much more difficult to install third-party hard drives in current or recent Macs than it was. See:
    http://blog.macsales.com/10146-apple-further-restricts-upgrade-options-on-new-im acs
The 2012 iMacs are also in essence glued together and very difficult to disassemble and reassemble. The bottom line is: don't try it.
Why, if I may ask, would you want to remove the 3TB drive and replace it with a 1TB drive? What is it you hope to achieve even if it were possible?
    Regards.

  • "Buy Now" option frozen

I downloaded the Adobe Acrobat XI trial about one year ago.  After using it for the 30 day period, I did not opt to purchase.  However, one year later (now), I would like to use the program and am ready to pay the monthly fee.  However, when I hit the "Buy Now" button, a new screen opens that is blank: https://www.acrobat.com/landing/en/acrobat-trial.html
    Any help with this?

Try using a different browser.  I accessed the link you provided using IE9 and it presented a page with the subscription ready to be ordered/purchased.

  • When I click on Buy Now - it simply won't purchase and download the song. What's wrong?

When I click on buy now, the song will not download. What's wrong?

Do you currently have a credit card set up in your iTunes store Enter Payment Information screen?
If so, grab a recent statement for that card and check to make sure that the address that shows up in your Enter Payment Information screen exactly matches the address showing on your credit card statement. For example, if your address in the credit card statement says "Street", the iTunes screen has to also say "Street" (Not St or Str.) Also match the capitalisation of the address on your statement. (If it says STREET in the statement make it say STREET in the iTunes screen, not Street or street.)
Also make sure that your name in the iTunes screen exactly matches the one in your statement. (Say, if you've got a middle initial in the credit card statement name, you need one in the iTunes screen.)
After doing that, does that get you past the invalid address thing?
If not, there's some additional suggestions in the following post:

So What is the Max Ram Support ?
Officially 16GB however OWC has advised it will support 32GB. BTW you can trust OWC, they are a reliable vendor that specializes in Macs. They test everything the either make or sell. Also they have terrific support and will ship internationally.
