Buy? or not buy?... that is the question...

Hello folks, I've a question to anyone how brought the new Ipod 60gb Video and buy too the Ac Power Adaptor, and the question is:
The Ac Adaptor only works with 110v??... I ask that 'cos I'm outside USA, but I will buy the Ipod video and some accessories by Internet and a Uncle will bring to me when she travel here... so, I need to know if I will need to buy too the extra power adaptor (U$ 39) or not... also need to know if I the Dock is a good investment too.
Thanks a lot, and sorry for the terrible English
Regards.

The AC adapter I have works with voltages from 100-240V and frequencies from 50-60Hz. It should work worldwide. The only difference is that you may need to buy a plug adapter to connect it to your local electrical system. These typically cost about £5 here in the UK, or $8-9.
I would recommend the dock for convenience, but it really is down to personal preference. If you think that $40 is a lot for a glorified stand with a pass through connector then you probably won't want it, unless you have a use for Apple's IR Remote which works with the dock.

  • USB or not USB, that is the question....

    Hello,
I've got a 1Ghz emac from a couple of years ago and I've almost used up all of the 80gigs in hard disk space.
So I'm looking at getting something like a Lacie or Ice Cube external hard drive that I've seen around, but I'm stumped about what sort.
I'm pretty sure my machine being as old only supports firewire 400, and I'm pretty sure it supports USB2.
But if Firewire 800 is becoming the new standard for future macs, and if I want to use my external hard disk on a mac I buy further down the track, am I better off getting an external HD that has both firewire 400 & firewire 800 on it, and/or USB2, or should I just consider USB2? Or is firewire 400 by itself good enough?
    Any advice on this?

Do not use a drive that has only USB2. They lack throughput, and you can't boot from them. FireWire 800 drives can be connected to FireWire 400 ports, but cost more. Unless you're planning to move to a machine with FireWire 800 soon, you'd be wasting money buying a 800 right now.
That said, most of the larger LaCie drives come with all three interfaces, so if you want 250GB or more you can get a drive with all three ports quite easily.

  • AVCHD or not AVCHD (That is the question)

Just bought new camcorder to go from DV to HD (AVCHD).
Now i'm reading that Premiere sees this codec as difficult to work with.  I thought it would be easier as it is a smaller file size / bit rate that other HD formats
    is this not the case?
Have had to buy new processor, more rame and new graphics card just to get it to playback i track of AVCHD.
Why does Premiere see it as hard to decode / playback.

    Say dippy26:
I might have a few things in common with you as I am about to go the 980x and Quadro 4000 setup..
What I seem to be finding out is the Quadro cards do not add that much benefit when working with AVCHD Files / do I have this right ?
I notice you have a raid setup / I was not going to go that way with AVCHD work because I was under the impression it was not needed as file access speed in not the issue with most AVCHD setups.
As you may know I have a Core I7 /920 & CS4, which does not work so well / but not because for drive speed.
The files play just fine, even a couple of layers, no problem.
But when I try running any FX's the 920 just bytes the dust.
Part of my problem is memory limitations of Win-XP./ my new setup will have 24gb memory access so those problems should be gone with CS5 64 bit once I get the configuration figured out..
Which Raid card are running / or just off the motherboard controller ?
Which Hard Drives are you running on the Raid array ??
    RE: your NX5U...
right now I have only a little Sony cx550v, which for the bucks is rather amazing.
but the issue of files being automatically split is a real bummer as I do music videos and concerts.
**I have been looking into the NX5U and I see id does the Sony software which comes with it (for joining these split files into one long segment) "does not support a 64bit OS / has this been updated now / I can't seem to find this info on the Sony Site?
**the cx550v also does not support a 64 bit OS.
Does CS5 actually import split ACVHD files from your Sony and seamlessly join them ?
I was going for the EX1r which cost as much as 2 NX5U's / I know I would not have editing issues with the X1r files and they would also be better quality (so they say).  my little cx550 has done a few things which to me are not a huge difference from what I see coming from these higher end EX1r's / at least on the internet display quality.
I understand when on full screen HD TV that is another story..
Do you have a clip or two of your NX5U work I could look at ?
Just trying to get my act together here and have to make a wise decision the first time around, if possible.
    Thanks for the feedback !

  • Wait o not? that is the question...

Hi, I'm a PC user and I read some issues of the latest MBP. I'm deciding to move to Mac OS X cause doesn't have problems like Windows, it's a firm OS, and I would like to purchase a portable machine and some issues are annoying me a lot (glossy screen, display hinge loose...) arf!! Do u recommend me wait?
    Thanks

Hi there, THe new MBP is a beautiful machine that runs like a dream. I doubt you'll regret making the switch. A lot of people have gotten machines that are perfect. But I managed to get three faulty machines in a row and noticed that ALL models on display in my local apple store had warped lids, kind of like the issue that was pretty prolific in the previous generation of mbp's. All the ones I saw also had the loose hinge issue. I don't think anyone knows how common these issues are and I don't think it's fair to assume that 99% of the product is without a flaw. If that were the case, then at least one of the 6 mbp's I saw would have been without flaw. Maybe my store got a bad batch, I don't know. But honestly, it is a gorgeous machine and I still intend to buy one.

  • To have an app killer or not to, that is the question

Hey guys. I have a quick question. May sound dumb or may have already been asked but i can't find it. The question being, is it safe to use an application killer or not. I understand that some programs must stay running (have done that much research.) But it is safe to have an app killer and kill simple apps such as facebook, myspace, yahoo messenger, etc. I am currently using the advance task killer free version. I just don't want to do anything to harm anything such as the phones functioning. Thanks in advance for the help.

It all depends on what you want out of your phone. If you want long battery life, then don't install a task killer. If you want faster application response (from already running apps, i.e. Internet browser) that dynamically require more and more memory as you use it, then install a task killer and configure it to only stop apps that don't auto-start. I've found that some apps like mail, gmail, browser, games, run much snappier if the underlying OS isn't busy having to stop other apps and free other resources. Ironically, none of these issues are new, Mainframe, host based, virtual, and cloud computing developers have been dealing with shared resource issues for decades. Silly android devs, they think they've discovered something new.

  • TurBo or Not TurBo:  That is the Question

Good morning (or 'afternoon to my European consultants).
In my search for a cheap ISP (related thread
i NetZero and The Browser Question
still active and needed), I was steered to FasterMac.net, which claims that for a few dollars more than their standard product, they'll have me surfing along at warp speed. Here's how they explain it:
    i TurboMac Dial-Up Service combines FasterMac.net Unlimited Dial-Up
i services with the TurboMac Web Accelerator. TurboMac powered by
i SlipStream compresses, optimizes and streamlines web content after it
i leaves the server, providing a dramatic improvement in web-surfing speed,
i which is important for dial-up users who either don't have access to high-
i speed cable or DSL services, or don't want to pay the higher prices charged
i for broadband services. Customers surfing the Internet with these
i technologies will find that web pages download up to six times faster than
    i traditional dialup.
Sounds good to me, but . . .
Is it too good to be true? Does web accelerator technology really work? Does it change one's web experience dramatically enough to justify additional monthly expense? If indeed the technology is valid, do the benefits apply no matter which browser one uses?
I await your answers. (I love it when you talk tech to me.)
b And in case you missed the Awards Show last night:
BonnieB was presented the prestigious Apple Discussions Level 1 Award!!!!
    i "Gosh, (blush) I never thought I'd win, so I didn't prepare a speech . . . but
i . . . I want to thank the Apple Academy, and mostly all the Discussion
i Members who made this possible. You know who you are, and I'll never
i forget you. Let's do lunch. Kisses!"

On the issue of the accelerator-type services, there are some situations where the 'up to 5 times faster....' advertising is true. The problem is that it is not something you can count on in advance. If your browsing habits fit the nature of the caching and compressing activities of the ISP, then you'll notice an improvment, if not, then what you'll ntoice would be rather inconsistent - sometimes faster, sometimes not. Whether it's worth it is up to you and in part depends on how much web browsing you do and how impatient you get, but with the limit placed by the nature of dialup, I suspect many people who find it a benefit to begin with may actually get used to it and not see the advantages after a bit of use.
As to browsers - I used Safari right from the date Apple released it. Back then it was genuinely fast and a refreshing change from all (or at least many) of the other browsers that had tended to get more and more bloated and less and less responsive. The problem is that Safari is now pretty much in the same boat - it is far slower than it used to be. I have an old G4 that I use to boot into various version sof MacOS, and Safari running under a late variation of Jaguar is markedly more responsive and draws pages noticably faster than Safari running under Tiger.
In addition, Safari has had some memory issues (it has grabbed increasing amounts of system memory as you leave it running, even if it's not active), resulting in the system slowing down overall. Quitting Safari and restarting resolves this, but was nuisance enough that I looked around for an alternative.
I tried Firefox and didn't like it. It's clunky and not particularly responsive either. I've tried others such as Opera, and usually get the feeling that the authors have made it different just to BE different. Ultimately, I now use Shiira - a browser that uses my Safari bookmarks and which was based on the same rendering engine with the intention of making a browser that was what Safari used to be. It's a bit quirky, but works well, and behaves itself in all the ways I want a browser to behave!
If you want to try it, you can find it on www.versiontracker.com

  • Battery or not battery, that is the question!

Ok, I’m a bit confuse, I read many post on Apple Support Forum, IpodLounge forum and some other stuff found on Google. Don’t worry, I did my homework and now I’m out of solution to ID my iPod problem.
Model: iPod Mini 4G 1st generation.
Basicly, it run out of battery overnight.
Please, don’t answer “Have you check for Alarm setting?” Like I said, I did my homework prior to write. Have a look:
I test the batteries as Apple recommends it (8 songs, repeat mode, etc…). They lasted for 3h30.
Than I tested it in intervals during the same day (9h15@10h30, 12h35@14h00, 15h25@16h40) for a total 4 hours.
    Than I started overnight tests:
    August 9th : 18h05@18h40, 20h25@21h35 (1h45).
On August 11th I tried to open it, but I had a no more charge message. I recharge on the 11th.
On the 14 of August, I did a Full Restore. Uploaded 4 new song (not the same that I originally tested but, but still...)
On the 15th, I took it back. Empty again. I recharge. Than played from 15h40@16h50. And I received a empty message again. I let it plug to the wall for charging all night.
On the 16th, I played form 14h25@15h15, than empty again.
    On the 2nd Recharge
On the 23rd played from 15h10@15h30, than empty again.
All my recharge last in average 5 hours.
Now I don’t know what to do.
Before I send it to apple for check up, I just want to make sure it is a battery issue.
If anyone experience same kind of problem, please advice.
    Thanks
    Alex

    Curiouser and curiouser....
While I don't have a clue regarding the reason or explanation, something strange just happened.  To summarize:
The 6-month-old T530 (with original battery) has for the last few weeks been turning off (hibernating, then shutting down) earlier and earlier, initially at around 20%.  Earlier this week it was shutting down with ~50% capacity remaining.
Yesterday I set it to charge to 100% (although it stopped at 99%) instead of the usual setting to charge to 92% or 95%.  After that charge it didn't shut down until it drained down to 15%, and when plugged back in it showed 15% remaining (where previously on resumption from hibernation it showed 6% remaining.)
So a battery gauge reset was apparently not needed.  (Or else this particular battery is exhibiting flaky behavior.)
I've read these batteries don't tolerate full discharge, which is not a problem because the computer will shut itself down before reaching a critical level (which currently appears to be 15% on this unit.)
I've read these batteries don't like a full charge and will live longer if only charged to 90-95%.
I've also read that the battery should be fully charged to 100% about every 3 months to improve it's longevity.  Based on current experience I believe I will set my charge threshold to start charging at 80% and stop at 90 or 92 or 95% (periodically changing it) and for one cycle every 2-3 months run it to 100% charge.
(I'll keep a close watch on things for the next few cycles and post an update if anything changes.)

  • String: Extend or not extend thats the question ...

    A simple design question:
If you need a method to create a String with chars of the same value, let us name it fill.
Would you inherit from String or create a helper class with a static method, and why:
    class XString : extends String
    String fill(int count, char character)
//add character count times to a String and return the result
    class StringHelper
static String fill(int count, char character)
//add character count times to a String and return the result
I think its bad design to create this awful helper class.
    Whats your opinion.
    Dirk

But is this good OO Design? It seems to
me like a goto in prozedural languages. So the argument is whether you should extend the functionality of a particular object by actually extending the class? I can see why creating helper classes can feel like "fragmenting" the code.
One of the problems with extension, despite its core role in OO principles, is that its implementation in non-trivial situations tends to break one of the other OO principles... encapsulation.
Extending a class to fulfil the existing API is generally fine, but any kind of extension to the API generally requires knowledge of how the extended class functions - the implementation - to prevent disrupting existing behaviour, or requires rewriting the extended functions to prevent such clashes. There's a good example in Doug Lea's book Effective Java.
In the context of the original example, I probably wouldn't want a method that returns a String, but an extension to StringBuffer with a repeat(char with, int count, int index) method which inserts a character a given number of times in the given location in an efficient manner would have been quite useful to me in various situations - most involving padding a buffer to a desired length before returning the required String.
Is there a particularly good reason why StringBuffer is declared final, preventing this? The only way to (pretend to) do this would be to decorate StringBuffer with a repeating class which creates a char array and inserts that into the buffer... any other method fails to meet the requirements of efficiency. In other cases, there may be no efficient way to perform some task without extension, because no sufficiently efficient method is provided.
I've talked myself into a corner, and I don't know which side of the fence I stand on. I'll continue to write decorator classes though, because I can't write extensions.

  • Connected or not connected that is the question

I have had 4g for two weeks now and nothing but problems.  When connecting through VZA Manager it will show connected but I have no internet.  DNS will resolve fine but unable to ping and of course connect to anything. Why show connected if its not getting out???
Sometime hitting disconnect and connecting back will fix the issue other times its a good 15 to 20 mins before connecting.  Once Im connecting It works great!  Great speed ping for what 10 15 mins before the hole process starts over.     I am wishing I researched a little more before upgrading the two unlimited 3g devices I had.  Very disappointed !!

    I have windows 7 Enterprise
1st I do not see Activation under options.  Ive not seen that since we got the 4g card and i updated the VZ access manager
2nd   I tried to delete the connection but I still connect to the networks that do not work
3rd    OMG did creating the apn screw my card up after connecting it lasted about 15 secs and still grabbed the network that is not working for me.  When i went back to VZ manager 4g would drop and 3g would come up card would power off and started getting wmc604 error  .

  • Portal or Not Portal - That is the question

    Hello All!
We currently have Oracle Portal running our intranet and it's working fine. We are now looking at revamping our corporate site. Portal seems to be limiting as far as graphical layout control. I've thought about building the site in HTML. I'd like to build some editing pages in Portal that will allow our directors to manage content and then utilize PHP to connect to the database to get the content and display it. Has anyone done this? Is this a kosher idea or would someone suggest otherwise?
    Thanks!
    Jason

    Hello Jason
Portal seems to be limiting as far as graphical layout control. In you context, you want to revamp an existing web site, UI template will give you a complete flexibility for the design of you page.
I am not sure to see the link between the site migration and "I'd like to build some editing pages..."
You want to edit/publish content or application data ?
    - in the case of the content the OracleAS Portal Content Management features should provide you all the key features you can need. I do not think that is a good idea to redevelop it. OracleAS Portal CMS allow you to upload files, enter content, powerful categorization, translation, search, workflow approval .. and more
    - in the case of application data, meaning: you want to create an 'application' inside portal, you can do it using the Portal Developer Kit that allow you to develop portlets using Java or PL/SQL. The Java implementation is running inside a J2EE Container so you'll be able to develop any business logic, and data access you need using the J2EE components (EJB, JMS, Web Services and so on)
I think you should tale time on http://portalcenter.oracle.com to see the different features that OracleAS portal, and OracleAS in general will give you... and save you to reeinvent the wheel.

  • To partition on a date  field or not to , that is the question !

We have a table with a date field. One of our dba's has recommend that we partition the table with a new partition for each day.
I dont agree because the date in this field is constantly being updated by an application. So presumabley when this date field is updated the row will then move from one partition to another.
Surely this is not a good idea !!

    Hi,
Well, it depends if the row continuously moves from one partition to another. It that's the case you have to take in account the overhead induced by indexes: they must also be updated accordingly. You can also consider widenning the partition range, from one day to one week, or one month!
Depending on the volume of data it can be tricky to decide what you want to do. The first point in making up your mind is: do you have performance problems? If yes, then you can study it. If no, then just let the table be as it is.

  • Bluetooth keyboard for my ipad 4. To buy or not to buy, that is the question

I need some help.  What's up with all the hub bub regarding bluetooth keyboards for ipad?
Is there a real need for one?
Are there power users out there that can enlighten me how having a keyboard for my ipad 4 is better than my stylist or finger?

It depends on the amount of typing you do. There are two advantages, in my opinion, to an external keyboard.
you get the whole screen back (can be annoying typing with half the screen taken up by the keyboard)
You get to touch real keys (easier to do touch typing on a real keyboard than a glass screen)
Ergonomics - you can prop the ipad up at eye level and keep the keyboard at wrist level.
I have a BT keyboard and don't use it often, but for anything longer than a paragraph I find it preferable.

  • To engrave or not engrave, that is the question

I finally received my bonus money and am ready to buy an iPod nano. My dilemma is whether to get it engraved or not. I know that if it is engraved, I can't return it. I'm not planning on returning it unless it is defective, which Apple would have to replace anyway.
Are there any disadvantages to having the iPod engraved besides not being able to return it?
    Julie
P.S. Why is "nano" flagged as misspelled when I run the spell check?

"Are there any disadvantages to having the iPod engraved besides not being able to return it?"
The one's that spring to mind are the fact that should you need to return it under the warranty, then it may well take a little longer to be replaced if you want another nano with the same engraving. And selling it. Should you ever wish to sell it at a later date, it may not have the same resale value with engraving on it.
And nano is not flagged as misspelled with my spell check.

  • 2+ or not 2+ that is the question

    Hi,
My exchange was recently upgraded to 21CN and I had an email saying that I would be upgraded. The day came and I can see I am now connecting to different hardware at the far end (different Vendor ID) however I am still only connecting at G992.1 (ADSL2) not G992.5 (ADSL2+). I've re-booted twice but don't want to anymore as I'm still in the 10 day training period. I have a very nice stable 8Meg connection but could probably go faster if I negotiated at G992.5. Can anybody tell me if
    a) Homehub 1.5 will run G992.5 (I'm sure it should do) and
    b) whether I should be running ADSL2+ yet or have I jumped the gun?
    c) How I go about getting it sorted presumiing my line profile is stuck.

  • To DD-WRT or not to, that is the question!

I just bought the WRT610N (on sale for $145 =)) and I see that version 2 of this router is now supported for DD-WRT
My set up is downloading torrents from my Windows Home Server and I stream video to my Popcorn Hour from that machine as well. I then play XBox 360 online and stream music from my Macbook Pro to my Apple TV.
That's pretty much it for the bandwidth suckers in my house. I am upgrading from a WRT310N (it died) that had DD-WRT. I had put DD-WRT on this router because I had a Macbook that would drop connection 50% of the time till I put DD-WRT on but I found I have to unplug my WHS every time I want to play some XBox Live even after I've setup QoS.
This router has a technology called "Media Optimized Network technology" (DLink calls theirs "HD Fuel") I am hoping that this will work better then the QoS on DD-WRT.
So my main result is, I want to be able to play XBox Live and stream videos to my pch with out having to unplug the WHS.
If you have any experience with the WRT610v2 with either firmwares or have some guidance on how to make this work, I would be very appreciative.
    Thanks a lot.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I had all the ports open and had the xbox in the DMZ. Still did not work.
I have had the 610 for a day now and can notice a big difference in performance. I am happy so far but like I said it has been a day. I miss the bandwidth logging and a way better status page with all sorts of good info that DD-WRT does and a bunch of other stuff. I wish linksys would not be so lame and put some better features in there routers. I have been looking at pretty much the same ui from the early 2000's, time to change!!

  • To 24p or not 24p that is the question...

    Hey,
Is it better to create a 24p DVD over a 29.97 one? I shot my feature in 24p. I shot it actually in 24p Advanced in Letterbox mode. Used the Panasonic DVX100 original.
    Ideas? Suggestions?

    Hi Chris:
Starting a new thread with the same question will not help to get an answer. You have all these threads running with the pretty same problem:
