Buy Or Not, Final Cut XVs Avid Or Premier?

Many say that Final Cut Pro X is just an upgrade version of imove and nothing else. That many applications do not become any more good than they were in Pro 7. What do you think? Should I buy this kind of sofware or just buy Premier or Avid?

c'mon, Meg, been there, ad nauseam, … :
You don't 'have' your projects, if you can't use them.
That simple.
You have to pay Adobe a monthly fee to use your projects, your movies, your creativity.
In return you get an awesome product (suite of products!), no doubt.
And it's a kind of 'maintenance contract' you're signing, to get always the latest updates  - …
oops, last dozen updates&upgrades  of FCPX were for free .... hmmmmm.-
Depending on which side of the pond you grew up, we have diff. 'perspective' on that:
in the US, historically reasoned (old, but still a good read, and telling the story of ©: N.Postman/Amusing Ourself To Death)  the distributor  is protected, therefor © was invented.
in Europe, historically reasoned, the creator is protected, therefor no © here, but 'author rights' ...
For me, it is just  an 'uncomfortable' situation, that I should to pay every time I like to work on my projects ...
Both methods have their plus&minuses  (has FCPX any disadvantages at all, to come back2topic?? )
yep, I'm biased ..........
Aside commercial & legal evaluation, all discussions in the end are about 'Interface' and 'Usage'.
Are you comfortable with multiple tracks and drawers/bins?
Or are you comfortable with a single storyline and flexible tags?
Lucky us, there are trials. Find out yourself.
And lucky us, both systems are avail!

  • Final cut vs avid?

The post on our forums at the link below needs some real follow up in my opinion from mac users that use Final Cut, right?
    http://www.studentfilmmakers.com/bb/showthread.php?t=4395
"I am thinkin about getting one of the two but I am not sure which one is better in the long run."

Yup, that thread is very insightful and is full of great points.
There is no WINNER and LOSER with Avid or FCP...or Premiere or Edius or Vegas. These are tools, and each has it's strengths and weaknesses. What you need to determine is what you need to accomplish, what other entities you need to interface with and what your workflow needs to be, then buy the tool that fits those needs.
I use both Avid and FCP (cutting on Avid now is a matter of fact) and I like both. I need to change my editing mindset (trim vs drag around the timeline) but I enjoy working on both systems.
This debate is older than the hills and is really getting tiresome. There is no "VS." Like asking "what is better? A hammer an nail or screwdriver?" They both are used to attach things to other things, but are better in differing circumstances. No, there is no VS, rather there is "get the tool that you need to accomplish the task at hand."

  • Should I Bother Buying New iMac, Final Cut?

I currently own a seven-year-old G5 running 10.4.11. I'm using FCS and have been trying to upgrade to FCS2 since buying it several months ago, but it won't recognize the serial number from FCS, but that's not my problem/question.
I desperately need to buy a new(er) computer because I'm maxed out at 4GB of RAM, which just isn't cutting it any more. I've also begun shooting HD with a Panasonic HPX170. The camera creates MXF files that FCS is not able to import. I want to keep using Final Cut because I prefer it to Premiere Pro, but the news I've been reading about FCX is not encouraging.
If I buy the newest Studio version (prior to X), will it work on a new iMac? I just can't afford a Mac Pro right now, and I've heard the new iMacs scream, but it won't do me any good if I can't run Final Cut Pro on it, and I really don't want to use Premiere.
I also publish several magazines and use Adobe CS3 and 4, but those are less of a concern right now.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

    >I've also begun shooting HD with a Panasonic HPX170. The camera creates MXF files that FCS is not able to import.
FCP 5.0.4, FCP 5.1 and up can import footage from that camera.  If you are running FCS, that means FCP 5.1.  The option for that is FILE>IMPORT>PANASONIC P2.  I have a workflow here:
    http://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/p2_workflow.php
FCP 5.1 TOTALLY supports that format.
    >If I buy the newest Studio version (prior to X), will it work on a new iMac?
FCS 2009...or FCS 3...totally.  Absolutely.  If you can find it. Apple pulled it, then re-released it if you called them direct.  But who knows if that is still happening.  The new iMac will run FCS 2, if you install Rosetta on it from a previous OS installer (custom install Rosetta).

  • Not Final Cut to IDVD but IDVD to Final Cut

Can I import the intros from IDVD to Final Cut Express? Either HI Def or not. If so, will chapter  buttons transfer?  If not , can I at least import the intros to Final Cut Express. I can't make anything as nice myself in Final Cut Express.

No. The intros are templates that only exist in iDVD. They get embedded into an iDVD menu.

  • About to buy MacBook Pro & Final Cut if I can get this answered

I have a Sony HD camera to export the video files as .m2ts files. Without converting them, will Final Cut Express be able to edit these video files, or will I have to go with Final Cut Studio for it to work? Basically, I'm trying to edit to stay in 1080i HD, so I need to know:
    1. Will a 13-inch MacBook Pro will be enough to power HD video editing?
    2. Will Final Cut Express allow you to edit .m2ts files without converting?
    3. Will Final Cut Express allow you to render your completed project in its full 1080i resolution?

I can't answer your Final Cut Express questions, but I can suggest against the MBP 13-inch. I was looking at getting one myself till I learned that the video card in the 13 inch unit is not sufficient to run Motion. If I'm not mistaken it won't run Color either. Missing both of these applications is a huge loss. If you're going to get a MBP and intend on editing get at least the 15 inch model with GeForce 9600m graphics. You'll thank yourself for the extra screen space anyway.

  • What camcorders can I buy to support Final cut pro.

My price range is up to $500. I need a good camcorder that is compatible with final cut pro.

Depends what compatible means. THe Canon HV40 is tape based and is still available for $600. That's records to HDV and can be edited natively in FCP.
As to other formats, nearly any camera will work OK with FCP, although I would avoid those that record directly to DVD.
Virtually all other consumer choices today use AVCHD, which needs to be transcoded via Log & Transfer. Here is a list from Apple that is a few years old. Many of these models are no longer on the market, but you can find their nearest equivalent. One camera that isn't on the list are those made by GoPro. If you're active in sports like skiing, surfing, or biking and want to record action, look into their equipment.
    Good luck.

  • Importar proyectos Final Cut y Avid a Premiere 2.0

    Gracias.

Jerry thank you, yes that works. The trouble is when I export a clip it loses it's timecode reference and so I end up without any kind of timecode in Premiere.
The other issue with exporting files specfically through Final Cut is that we have a digitised library of 150 hours of aerial footage that I would like to access and it would take too long to redigitise through Premiere or to convert every file. It also ties up the Macs which are in constant use throughout the day.
Has anyone ever tried to do import files into Premiere directly and had any luck? Are there any others solutions out there?

  • Final Cut Pro versus Adobe Premier Elements9

  • Final Cut to Avid

    Hello!
I am working on a rough cut and have to transfer the material to avid. How do i save the project?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Your options are limited. Automatic Duck will convert the entire project. Very useful, but you pay for what you get. You can export an EDL.
You can also investigate Sebsky Tools...

  • Cannot import .fcpxml from Final Cut Pro X to Premier Pro 6 ...'file format not supported'?

I've exported a project from FCPX into a .fcpxml. Upon trying to import it in Premier Pro 6, an error appears 'file format not supported'. I have searched for possible solutions, but everything I've found is related to FCP 7. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Kevin!
    Thanks for your response.
The codec is actually MPEG-2  -- so it's not a ProRes codec.
    Other information:
    HDV1080i60; 29.97 fps; 48Hz, 1440x1080 resolution
    Any ideas for us?
Thanks for responding so quickly ~

    Hi Jessica,
    That is a stickier case.
You can purchase the Calibrated {Q} plug-in to fill that gap. It might be wise to contact them and see if you can get an educational or volume discount.
The no-cost solution is a bit more labor intensive: transcode the footage to a friendlier codec prior via the FCP Media Manager prior to the students leaving the program.

  • Need DVD Studio Pro - not Final Cut

I'm doing volunteer work for an organization that trains dogs for the disabled. All I need is DVD Studio Pro.... Why has Apple bundled it? The expense is far too high for someone who doesn't need the rest of the software. Is there any way to get DSP 4? Perhaps used?

On a Mac the only options are iDVD and DVD Studio Pro... unless you want to work in OS9 and can find (or afford) a copy of Sonic Fusion or Sonic Creator.
By far the best way forward is to try to find a copy of DVDSP on eBay, or to invest in the whole bundle...
On a PC the options are far more numerous, with lots of offerings from Sonic, plus Adobe Encore to get you started off. If you are looking for something a lot more sophisticated, then look at DVD Lab which is very reasonably priced and gives great access to the features of the DVD spec.

  • Import movie from final cut pro x in pinnacle studio ?

today i make movies with pinnacle studio (windows)
i have pc with blu ray burner in pc (built in)
i would like to buy mac with final cut pro x
is it possible to make movie (high definition) in finacl cut pro x and export to a format which can be imported in pinnacle studio (version 14) without loss of quality
then i would like to burn blu ray on my pc with pinnacle studio
so : make movie with mac and burn HD movie on pc ?

It'd be easier to get Toast 11 Pro and author/burn Blu Ray on your Mac.
BUT, that's extra money you may not want to spend.
Pinnecle, does it import XML files?  Well, that may not work anyway.
You'll have to export a QT movie in FCP X that Pinnacle will read.

  • Final Cut Express on iMac G5

    Hey all,
I nearly had a heart attack when I installed my Final Cut Express software onto my new Rev.C iMac G5 and it told me that I needed an APG graphics card. My new mac equiped with the new PCI-E graphics card apparantly isn't compatable. So how do I utilise my editing software on my new mac? Can I upgrade the software for it to work with my new graphics card? Or do I have to buy a new Final Cut?!
Any help would be much apreciated. I have Final Cut Express 2.0.2 by the way.

I heard about this on MacCast podcast. It was talking about FCP but it may affect FCE too. Officially Apple doesn't address it.
There is a hack that was posted in the show notes (I assume it's there it was on the podcast). You basically have to edit one of the files in the contents that checks hardware when it (FC) opens. It didn't seem like much trouble to do so either.
If you go to MacCast and download show 11-25-2005 it's there. As I say this addresses running older versions of FCP on newer G5's but I'll bet it's the same issue. At least it's worth a listen.
