Buying a Dell monitor for my MacBook Pro

Hey people,
Sorry for being a newbie with this forums, I don't really know if this question should be posted here, considering I will use the monitor with my rMBP or if I should post this at the peripherals section of the forums.
Anyway, I'm in doubt between buying a Dell U2412M and the Dell U2414H, but I've seen people saying they had problems with both of them. Basically relating to making the DP ports to work with and sometimes about the amount of colors displayed (some people said the monitors wore not working at 8 bits (16.7m colors) when connected by HDMI and DP, due to the computer recognizing the monitors as TV screens or something like that) and that there is an Issue with the HDMI due to the nVidia graphics card. Also there's an issue with the monitor going to sleep mode and not coming back without re-plugging it.
My main questions are related to the connectivity (if the mDP works well considering I will use it for both monitors, I'm not thinking about buying converters to use DVI or even using the HDMI port); to the fact that one of the screens is 16:10 and the other is 16:9 (I don't know if that makes much difference, I will use the computer for work (some CAD applications and 3D rendering) and sometimes for photography editing after the renderings). The fact about the USB ports being 2.0 with the 2412M is not an issue at all.
As I heard both monitors are pretty decent concerning color reproduction, with the 2414H coming calibrated from factory and the 2412M being better if properly calibrated (according to TFT Central).
And the last question, IF somebody has the 2414H is if it could work as a TV (I would use an outside receiver (such as cable TV and Apple TV) and connect it to the HDMI port, but for that I would need the monitor to put the sound out from the audio connector, anybody know if it works?)
So, if anybody could give me any information about these monitors I'd be pleased. Or maybe other suggestions I'd be glad (My budget cannot go beyond the price of those Dell)
Thanks in advance,
Best regards.

Yes, if it's a Thunderbolt computer, but you will need to connect another Thunderbolt device (such as a disk drive) between the displays.

  • How do I set-up my TV as a dual monitor for my MacBook Pro?

    Hi
I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro running (OS X 10.8.2) Mountain Lion, and recently I rearranged my home workspace so that I can view my TV from my desk while I work.
I would like to set-up my TV as a dual monitor for my MacBook Pro, so I can stream videos on my TV screen and have the whole screen to do work on my MacBook Pro at the same time.
Is this possible? I've seen people use TVs as a mirror display (where it works as their main and only monitor), but never as a fully operational dual display.
As an example, I would like to have my MacBook screen showing a desktop with the whole screen devoted to Photoshop, while I have another desktop running on my TV, which shows an internet browser or other application.
If this is possible, what cords/hardware would I need, and what are the settings that will enable me to do this?
    - My TV is a modern flatscreen LCD, and it has two HDMI ports in the back.
    - It's about 9-10 feet from my desk.
If anyone could help, that'd be awesome!
    Thanks.

    Yes, you can do that.
You'll need a mini displayport to HDMI adaptor:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H1824ZM/A/moshi-mini-dp-to-hdmi-adapter-with-a udio-support
and an HDMI cable long enough to reach your TV
(look on Amazon or Monoprice for the best price on any of those parts)
In your display options, you will just choose extended desktop vs mirrored display.

  • I want to buy a hard case for my macbook pro, but I don't know what year it is. When I use the serial number to try and find out, all it says is, "~VIN,MacBook Pro (15-inch Glossy)". When I type that into amazon for a case it gives me nothing!

  • Dual monitors for my macbook pro

I want to use dual monitors for my macbook pro but I am getting mixed answers as to if that is possible. I want to use just the two monitors, so basically I am thinking I will plug my macbook into the monitors, close my macbook and use a blue tooth mouse and keyboard on the two monitors. I want to know if that is possible. Also, I am wondering about the adapters. I know that one end should be the thunderbolt and then the other end will have whatever the monitor needs (DVI/VGA) but all the adapters I see only have one place to plug a monitor in, and I will be need two.

    It is possible.
I currently use a thunderbolt to vga adaptor and a usb to vga adaptor to run two independent monitors.
However, the usb to vga adaptor is not great.  I'm using an Eclipse See2 UV159 but the screen does not come out as good as the thunderbolt to vga adaptor.
I'm currently looking for a better adaptor.

  • I would like to use my IMAC (early 2006) as a monitor for my macbook pro. Is it possible?

Is it possible to use as a monitor for a macbook pro an IMAC (early 2006)?

There's no direct input, but ScreenRecycler and Air Display both allow you to use any networked computer as additional display. I haven't tried either but perhaps one of them would work for you.

  • External monitor for Retina Macbook Pro

Hello,i want to buy an external monitor for my late 2013 rMBP.I tried two models (Dell U2414H and LG 23MPQ65-P),none of them worked perfectly. On both monitors colors were washed, without contrast, the font was blurry. So i decided to return the monitors and also I sent the laptop in service for several diagnoses to see if there's something wrong with my Macbook.
I see that there are many models of external monitors  that do not work correctly with rMBP.
I want an 23-27", FullHD, IPS monitor that would cost around 400$.
Can you tell me some suggestions?
    Thanks.

So which input ports are best to use? I know there's ones like HDMI and DVI, so which is better to use?
Modern monitors will likely have HDMI, DVI, and/or Display Port inputs. If you use HDMI then you will not need an adapter since your computer will have a HDMI port out. You will just need a HDMI cable. If you use DVI you will need a mini display port to DVI adapter and a DVI cable. Dual Link DVI is best but you will need a mini display port to Dual Link DVI adapter and a Dual Link DVI cable. If your monitor has a Display Port input you could use that.  vga will produce bad results compared to all the digital ports.
Your selection depends on the monitor you get. To get the best display resolution use what provides the monitor with video at the monitor's native resolution.
Use Google to compare the specifications of the different ports https://www.google.com/search?q=display+port+comparison+dvi+hdmi+dual+link

  • External monitor for my Macbook pro retina.

I want to connect a external monitor to my Macbook pro retina. I'm searching for other options than Apple Thunderbolt Display. But in most products the connection is not Thunderbolt. Can I connect my Macbookpro retina to a external monitor through HDMI?
Woull that me ok for video editing?
    Thank you!

I don't know that, I'm afraid. I've used an external monitor a few times on my 2011 MBP and it appeared to work perfectly whether in mirrored mode or not, but I'm not able to make time lapse measurements. Many people seem to use the arrangement so I would presume it's fine for video editing, but don't take my word for it.

  • Where can i buy a replacement trackpad for my macbook pro with retina display

recently the new force touch trackpad is out and I'm really excited about it and sometimes my multi-touch trackpad is a little glitchy so I'm wondering is there any place to buy a replacement trackpad for my macbook like multi-touch or force click trackpad replacement

My guess is they wouldn't introduce new production line just for the 1 or two milimeter difference. They will probably just change their marketing material and websites to add Retina as compatible. Then again I'm not a manufacturer.
In reality though, apart from hard-shell cases/sheilds that have to attach directly on the laptop, the cases and sleeves are already compatible.

  • Dual Dell Displays for my Macbook Pro Retina (Late 2013)

So I am looking at purchasing two of the new Dell Ultrashapr U2414H monitors to hook up with my Macbook Pro Retina. I have been trying to figure out the best way to connect both of the screens before I order them and I was hoping someone on here could offer guidance.
    Connectors for the U2414H:
         1. 2 HDMI(MHL) connectors
         2. 1 Mini DisplayPort
         3. 1 DisplayPort (version 1.2a)
         4. 1 DisplayPort out (MST)
Also, if anyone has any ideas of a better monitor that I should look into PLEASE let me know. I am very open to suggestions on what types of monitors go the best with the Macbook Pro Retinas.
    Thanks!!!!

I have just purchased a MBPr 13" along with 2 x Dell U2414h monitors in the hope of being able to daisy chaing the monitors. If i enable displayport 1.2 on both monitors then i end up with the 2 dells mirrored.
If i plug the monitors both directly into the mac over minidisplayport to displayport cables then i have 3 displays running (the MBPr and the 2 x Dell's). What i really want is to be able to daisy chaing 1 of the dells of the other one and then connect that one to the MBPr. But i cant work out how to stop them being mirrored.
    Anyone actually got this working?

  • Can i use my 21.5" imac as an external monitor for my macbook pro?

I have a 21.5" iMac (with Intel processor) that I'm trying to use an external monitor for a new Macbook Pro.  Both machines have a thunderbolt input.  I bought a Belkin mini displayport to mini displayport connector, but my macbook is not displaying on the iMac.  I saw videos online showing this done with the 27" iMac, saying you just needed to press Command+F2, but that is not working for me.  I can't seem to find any posts confiming if I can use my 21.5" iMac this way though.

  • Can I use my iMac 2009 as an external monitor for a MacBook Pro

I will soon be getting a new MacBook Pro with Retina display. It has an HDMI port.
My current iMac 21.5" late 2009 model seems to have a port with what looks like a little monitor symbol, next to the firewire port. And the specs say:
    Graphics and video support
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory3
ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
    Built-in iSight camera
Mini DisplayPort output port with support for DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI (adapters sold separately).
Support for extended desktop and video mirroring modes
Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to a 30-inch display (2560 by 1600 pixels) on an external display
Does this mean that port is just for video output to an external monitor? Or is is possible to also do video in?
On the one hand it feels like a waste to use a perfectly good iMac as a monitor. But the MacBook Pro actually has better specs, and so I was wondering if it is possible anyway.
    Thanks,
    doug

Thanks for your reply. After reading the article though, I'm still not really sure what the answer is. For example, you mention something that can be done, with some hurdles to go through, for 27" iMacs. Mine is a 21.5" iMac, but seems to have the same port you mentioned in the article. Or maybe it isn't. Anyway, I'm still not sure if it is possible after reading that. Interesting information though.

  • Can I use a PowerPC iMac as a monitor for my MacBook Pro?

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion. I need an external monitor for it and have an old iMac laying around that I'm wondering if I could use. The iMac is the first gen white square all-in-one screen one. It's a G5, 20" 1.8 GHz from 2005. PowerPC.
Can I connect my MacBook Pro to it to use as a second monitor? Or even to mirror the display? If so, what kind of connector cables do I need to make this happen?

You need to use a product such as ScreenRecycler over a network connection. All of these products require the capability to boot the iMac.

  • Imac as a monitor for a MacBook Pro

I would like to use my 6 year old Imac as a monitor for my 1 yr old MacBook Pro.  Any suggestions as to how to hook this up?

No.  I think it was about 2009 that iMacs could be run in target display mode but not earlier.

    Hi there,
Am I able to use a (mini display) iMac 27" as a secondary monitor for my (thunderbolt) MacBook Pro 15" ?
Are they able to connect to eachother?

I am under the impression that this kind of set up is not possible. However, there's a Cult of Mac article that talks about the feasability of such set up.
