Buying a Mac: 13" notebook dilemma demystified

A note before we begin: This tip answered a notebook question mistakenly posted in a desktop forum.  Before posting your question or issue, you might want to check out where you are using the nav bar at the top of any forum thread.  If searching for a particular family, enter its name as Apple would print it ("mac book" may give you all posts with "Mac" and "book", but "MacBook" will guide you to one of the three notebook forums).
Q: I'm considering purchasing a 13" MacBook Air or a 13" MacBook Pro.  Which one is right for me?
A: Let's make this easy at first: Both machines in question have the same core components, namely an Intel 6 series logic set and HD3000 IGP (integrated graphics processor).  Both share the same type of RAM--1333 MT/s DDR3.  So each moves data within itself equally as effectively as the other.  That's all the "geek" you need to know.
Both have a 13" display, a backlit keyboard, 2 USB ports, and a Thunderbolt multiport equipped; plus an SDXC slot for reading camera cards
The Air is thin and light, but it is also being positioned as a go-to notebook for the common man.  Its main advantages:
Weight (< 3 lb)
Thickness (< 1")
Hi-rez display (1440x900)
Energy efficient parts (SSD, low-voltage CPU)
Starts very quickly
The disadvantages:
Must be configured at purchase time (you can't upgrade later)
Low-voltage CPU slower than standard CPU (some apps may scoff at that, but nothing most folks will use does)
No optical disc drive (not a big negative if you don't use discs anyway)
Limited storage (128 GB by default, up to 512 GB)
Consequently, upgrades and accessoriess a fully configured Air more expensive
The 13" Pro embodies what the Air does not; it's a full-blown notebook with full trim, so you get:
SuperDrive DVD±RW
RAM up to 8 GB (MBA only gets 4 GB max)--and you can upgrade it any time.
Standard-voltage CPU (for overall muscle)
Upgradeable mechanical hard drive or SSD (up to 1 TB standard)
FireWire trasnfer port for storage and camera devices
But it's also heavier by two pounds and drops the display to 1280x800.
Do you value mobility? Or versatility? Since both have the same "heart," your answer  to my question will help you make a more informed choice.
Either way, you'll find a way to win.
Nate

I work for a school and we tend to have a very small budget. In recent months we have purchased 5 X 24" iMac's, 2 X MacMini's (one white and one aluminum), and 1 X 27" QuadCore iMac. They were all cheaper then the educational discount because they are all refurbished.
No problems so far.
They all looked brand new and the main reason that I like the idea of buying refurbished apple products is because I can still get applecare on them (which I did for all of the above computers). My thoughts are that I would rather buy refurbished sometimes because if there is a bug in the hardware it has probably been addressed.
If you can afford to get a MacBook its worth it. I am not sure about the exact specs on what you are comparing but from my experience the entry level MacBooks run similar speeds to the MacMinis and usually have similar specs. After all the MacMini is compact and running on similar hardware. I have used many laptops and Mac laptops are my favorite.

A creative Cloud membership provides you with the ability to have installations on different platforms, Windows and Mac.  And since you are allowed to have two working installations, you can have one of each.

  • Motivations to buy a Mac Powerbook

    Dear all,
I am thinking to buy a Mac Powerbook. However, I need advice from Mac fans. What are good and bad points about using a Mac Power book? Thanks a lot!

Hey buddy...don't do it!!!!!! I have a MacBookpro
that I bought in March. I have had nothing but
trouble with it since I bought it. It is the most
disheartening purchase I have ever made. Every time I
call Apple support they cannot seem to remedy my
problem and inform me that I should go to an outside
discussion group and maybe find someone who has had
the same problem and was able to fix it. I think the
biggest shock I got was when one techy suggested I
download some windows software and that may help with
my problem. I have a buddy who has a Dell laptop and
it makes this MacBook Pro look like an abbacus and I
paid $1000 more for my laptop. Hope you have better
    luck than I did!
With out a little more information, it's difficult for us to give any credibility to your comment. You don't indicate what problems you were having... It is uncommon for Apple support to basically say they can't help you and go check the forums. I would also be curious what Windows software they suggested that you download... and what it was supposed to fix. Also... Dell does not sell any notebooks with comparable specs to the MacBook Pro for $1000 less than the MacBook Pro... and they certainly don't sell ANYTHING that would make a MacBook Pro look like an "abacus".
The vast majority of people with MacBook Pros are very happy with them (including yours truly).

  • Buying a Mac mini for music

I'm buying a Mac mini in September - so I will have Snow Leopard - to use with the latest version of Logic and the latest version of Pro Tools and use for my college work and recording my band. I plan on using an M-Audio MobilePre USB, external hard drive and multitrack firewire interface for recording. Will I be able to use all of these devices simultaneously by using some kind of firewire hub without any noticable latency or driver/hardware problems? If it will not be as plug and play can somebody offer some kind of assistance? I am getting the 120GB model with a 2GB memory upgrade so I can get the maximum graphics memory as well. Thanks in advance.

I cannot answer your other questions, but I believe that you can confirm this with Apple, you can go ahead and make your purchase now and get a free copy of Snow Leopard when it is available. Apple has always had a free upgrade program for those who made recent purchases just before the upgrade release date.

  • I am going to buy a Mac desktop and want to know how to transfer all my purchases and uploaded music from my PC. How can I do this to ensure all videos and music transfer over and not just purchases?

I am going to buy a Mac desktop and want to know how to transfer all my purchases and uploaded music from my PC. I originally started using iTunes on my PC so it has everything I have ever purchased or uploaded from my own collection of music.
How can I do this to ensure all videos and music transfer over and not just purchases? Do they do it at the Apple Store or at Best Buy? help!

If you aren't doing any heavy duty photo editing
the base model should work just fine.  I would suggest
that if you go with the base model, bump the RAM
up to at least 4gig, but get it at Newegg or direct from
Crucial or Kingston, it will be way cheaper.

  • Do I need to buy a Mac pro with an iMac?

I'm planning on buying a 27-inch iMac, do I need to buy a Mac Pro (single processor) or any other hardware etc with the iMac PC?

Go for the higher end 27 inch screen base model.
Get one with the fusion drive.
Add third party RAM after the purchase.
If you need an optical drive, the new iMacs no longer have an internal CD/DVD optical drive.
You will need to budget and purchase an external optical drive.
Also, budget for an external hard drive for backups and storage.
Most important, budget for, purchase and register for extended 2-years of AppleCare warranty before your first year of ownership has ended.
The cost of the extra 2 years is only a fraction of an actual out of pocket repair cost.
Later aluminum iMacs, in general, have a 3-5 year varied liability history and it's better to have 3 years of warranty coverage than get caught with an expensive repair sometime after the first free year of AppleCare.
    Good Luck!

As I said you need to:
You need to wipe the hard disk and reinstall the OS by booting into the recovery partition and reinstall the original OS via the internet. It will ask you to enter your ID

I buy for mac app but not for the iPad, so how do I reinstall a program that has already purchased? I need help because I bought the imovie'11 but when he opened it only brought 8 movie trailer templates instead of the 15 it says on the program. How do I solve this problem? Once paid for a program incomplete. I also liked that the AppStore itself had a button to reinstall programs already bought, because it is very hard to understand how to do this in the store, only option is to install and hide purchase, and how do I reinstall, attention'm talking about reinstalling a computer mac, not an ipad or iphone.
    Thank you.

  • If I buy a Mac and iPad online, will I still be able to claim warranty at an Apple Authorized Service Provider?

If I buy a Mac and iPad online, will I still be able to claim warranty at an Apple Authorized Service Provider?
I am going to buy a Macbook Pro w/ Retina Display and iPad from www.topbuy.com.au . It's a legit website, but they say the items have topbuy warranties, not apple ones. They say I have to send off my faulty device to them, and they will fix it, but I don't want to do that. I just want to walk into an Apple store, tell them the problem and have a happy ending, like what's supposed to happen. Will I be able to do this?
    Thanks

Apple warranty is good at any Apple service provider, AASP or store.
But you seem to be reaching far to defend that "it's a legit website", especially when they seem to be directing you from seeking certified Apple service.
As the saying goes: If it looks like a duck, and it sound like a duck, it's quackers to bypass an Apple store or Apple online to save a few $$.  Well, something like that.

  • About to buy a Mac Pro, have quick question please.

    Hi all,
I am going to more than likely buy a Mac Pro 2.66 tonight or tomorrow, but I was wondering something in regards to graphics cars if any one could assist me.
I am planning to go with the ATI card and 2gigs of ram since I do some gaming on the side and plan to use bootcamp for that.
My question is that if I buy the machine in retail store, they do not credit the stock GeForce card and just add the ATI card in, so if I go that rout can both the ATI and Nvidia card both reside in the machine at the same time and be used in SLI mode?
EG: can I get the power of both cards or will I only be able to use the processing power of one card? If only one card then would I be better off configuring the machine online since they credit you the difference of the Nvidia card which saves roughly $150.00 off the order from doing it in a retail store?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not worried about the $150.00, it would almost be worth it to spend the extra since the shipping time on the online configuration may end up costing almost the same unless I want to wait a few weeks for the machine.
Whats your thoughts on this? Is it worth it to buy in the store and use both cards or just buy online from apple and get the credit for the Nvidia card?
    Thanks in advance!

can both the ATI and Nvidia card both reside in the machine at the same time and be used in SLI mode
No… SLI requires two Nvidia SLI capable cards. In addition, SLI is not supported under Mac OS X although does work, apparently, under Windows and Boot Camp. ATi's comparable technology is CrossFire.
would I be better off configuring the machine online since they credit you the difference of the Nvidia card which saves roughly $150.00 off the order from doing it in a retail store?
Financially yes as the Nvidia card is ultimately useless to you. One consideration though is the CTO conditions of return, or lack there of, in case you receive a DOA. In the US, amongst other countries, CTo unit are not returnable even if they are DOA so you should check the terms of sale in the country store you would buy from.
    Whats your thoughts on this?
I, like many others, bought CTOs from the Apple Store so I don't think it's such a bad way to go. It also means you won't have any pressing need to open your new Mac Pro right away.
One thing you might want to consider though is to downgrade the standard 250GB hard drive to a 160GB drive and use the saving on a drive of your choosing. Apple tends to use OEM desktop drives that have unimpressive performance. The 160GB drive in my Mac Pro didn't even get turned on. It was a Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 if you're interested.

  • If I buy a mac with mountain lion and then upgrade to mavericks wil I get iWork for free, If I buy a mac with mountain lion and then upgrade to mavericks wil I get iWork for free

If I buy a mac with mountain lion and then upgrade to mavericks will I get iWork for free.

If you buy a new Mac with Mountain Lion, any included software is free and can be redownloaded from AppStore for that machine only. Some software only gets reinstalled if OS X (only) gets installed over itself to fix issues. See #8 Step here.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
If you upgrade to Mavericks usually only OS X itself is changed (sometimes the hidden User Library is also), all the  software (and user accounts) also carries over (compatible or not), and Apple's software is upgraded.
So if your new Mountain Lion Mac comes with free iWork, then when you upgrade to Mavericks it will still be there.
If your new Mountain Lion does not come with free iWork, then it won't magically appear for free if you upgrade to Mavericks.
If you need a free Office suit, I suggest you look at the donationware LibreOffice.
You will likely need to control key or right click to "Open" LibreOffice to approve through OS X's "Gatekeeper".
You will need to manually update it also, as it's not on AppStore.
    https://www.libreoffice.org/
Benefit of LibreOffice is it's completely cross-platform compatible, so you can share working files with Windows and Linux users, which you can't with iWork.
You also should learn Microsoft Office when you have the funds, because it's standardized in the business world.

No idea if Windows will do it, but you can run Windows without Bootcamp & have OSX available at the same time, which should give you all the Monitors that OSX uses.
