Buying a Mac Book Pro from the UK

I reside in the UK and wanted to buy a MacBook Pro from the US to save some $$ (quite a lot - thanks Apple!) but have just realised that I cannot do this as I do not have a US billing address (even though I do own a house in the US).
Do I have any options around this - and will this be an issue if I was to come to the US to purchase one (will be in LA January) from a store.
My only worry is that I am on a business trip and timing is of essence so if it's going to take days to configure what I need - I'll be screwed - I just want to go in and come out with it. Can I reserve it before I go? I did call the store a few days ago and the guy on the phone told me I could only reserve one through an app...... er, but I don't have a mac currently or any apple product - so how am I supposed to do this?
Any help very much appreciated!

Hi c,
Given that you'll be dealing with an Apple Store or an authorized dealer, my suggestion is to narrow it down to one of the places you may buy it and contact them. Get the person's name first, and ask the questions you need to. I do not know if policy has changed, but it used to be that BTO (built to order) machines had to be shipped to the buyer (not picked up in the store); if that's the case, you'll have to buy a stock item and either upgrade it yourself when you have the time, or see if it's possible to have it upgraded at the store right after you buy it.

  • CAN I BUY A MAC BOOK PRO FROM THE STATES AND USE IT IN EUROPE?

i will come on holiday in the states and am planning on buying a macbook pro...can i use it in europe. cos i know the voltage in europe is diff from US.

Yes - the power supply is auto-sensing for 110-240V.
You'll obviously need some kind of physical adapter though.
Bear in mind that a US macbook comes with a US keyboard where the top line characters are mapped differently from the various European versions - Dollar sign, Euro sign, Pound sign etc.
And check the warranty arrangements in case you have to take the mchine back to America to get warranty servicing done.
Strictly speaking, you may also be liable for local taxes on value of the computer when you get home. Sales taxes, import duties for example. Probably not a great concern.

  • I am Canadian.  If I buy a Mac Book Pro in the USA is my warranty valid in Canada?

I Am Canadian visiting the United States.  If I purchase a Mac Book Pro in the US will the warranty be valid when I get back to Canada?

    Sorry, this should be a response to Fishmanbp;
From a fellow Canadian. Yes the warranty is valid in Canada, indeed anywhere in the world.
At Canada Customs you will have to pay HST on the purchase, unless you can persuade Customs that the cost was less than the permitted exemption. If you do pay HST, the cost will be the same as buying it here, within the daily fluctuations of the exchange rate.

Apple will gladly sell you a color coordinated and texture matching external SuperDrive to go with your Retina'ized MBP for about $80 bucks.
Note that those models are completely sealed with no serviceable or upgradeable parts inside. So if you decide to bite the bullet, be sure to customize its guts to your heart's content from the get-go as no further change will be possible. This means CPU speed, amount of RAM and size of the solid state drive. Other external options, like the Superdrive, can be added later.

what do i need to connect my mac book pro to the tv with the mac's thunderbolt port to hdmi? I have the newest macbook pro. I'm wanting to have the best picture I can get from my 1080p tv. thanks

Thanks Community! I solved the problem. In fact it was not a problem but lack of understanding. These guys at Apple are way ahead in thir thinking. I will try to explain as short as I can.
In Lion, ihe Prefferences/Display show only two choices: 6-7 steps of resolution and some color tab. No two screens, no two display to overlap, nothing for us to do. "That was the problem"! Everything is automatic.
When I connected the HDMI cable to the Miniport into a T-bolt slot, the TV screen showed the "spiral galaxy" how Zyriab is calling it. In fact he gave me the best clue. That shows the connection is good. But where is the Mac Book image?
You have to drag it to the right out of the Mac Book display area, and "voila!" it will continue on the TV screen. The same with the mouse pointer, push it out ofthe Mac Book display area and you see it on the TV sreen. Good image, you can keep the max resolution, etc. The sound is still on the Book's speakers. I have to figure that out.
Thank everybody, especialy Zyriab, ne was the closest.
    High regards to everybody

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.

After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
Before upgrading check that you computer meets the minimum requirements:
    Snow Leopard General requirements
