Buying a MacBook Pro

Im looking at buying a 13" MacBook Pro, but I'm not exactly sure which one I should buy. The Base 13" for $1,199 (2.5 ghz i5 Processor) or the upgraded 13" for $1,499 (2.9 ghz i7 Processor). I'm not sure whether to buy the cheaper one and save my money, because that is $300+ after taxes, or if it's worth it for the faster processor and such. (It really confuses me with the processor stuff because of the "Turbo Boost" with higher speeds, does that only work at select times?)
I don't know much about computers, so I don't know what the difference between an i5 or i7 processor is, and was hoping someone could steer me in the right direction. The games I'd be playing mostly would be stuff such as Sims 3, Cities XL 2012, and the new SimCity when it comes out. So mostly simulation games like those. I don't really play those intense shooter games or whatever that most people play, so I'm not sure if that's important for graphics/processor wise. I'll put the links comparing the two computers I'm looking into, and the links for the requirements for the games in hopes that someone will help me. Anyways, thanks in advance for anything. Any help is very much appreciated, since I have no idea about all the specs importance and stuff.
P.S., I'm not interested in any other computers, I want a MacBook Pro because I'll be in College soon and need something that works well for classes, typing papers, all the normal school stuff. I've used Apple products before and admire them for the very few viruses they get, compared to my families PC's.

Hi hawknelson,
I’ll give you a quick and dirty answer first:  While a 13 inch MacBook Pro (MBP) should play all of the games you mentioned, it may not play them particularly well.
Intel divides its current processors into three categories: i3, i5, and i7. The i3 is more in the budget processor range, the i5 in the mid-range, and the i7 is the premium range. For running games like the Sims, an i5 processor will do what you need it to do just fine. On a side note, Hyper Threading is meant to help your computer multitask better. Your computer doesn’t need to do this for most run-of-the-mill browsing and word processing, but it can get a nice performance boost when handling big, hairy computations such as 3D gaming or movie editing. I don’t think the processor is what’s going to hold you back here though; it’s the graphics memory you’ll need a little more of.
What I’m worried about is that the 13 inch MBP doesn’t include a dedicated graphics card. 3D graphics require a lot of memory. The integrated Intel HD graphics included with either 13 inch will do its best, and you’ll probably get the games to run, but gameplay will likely be slow with long load times.
I know that you’re concerned about price and, to be honest, gaming laptops are not cheap. You’re already playing a premium to be able to tote your computer around easily. Packing all that up-to-date hardware inside a portable package can get costly. If you’re committed to a MBP, you may be better off with one of the 15 inch models (they both include a dedicated graphics card). My roomate plays Sims 3 on his all the time and it works pretty well.
Happy Gaming!

Why do you need a expensive MacBook Pro?
Your attending high school and unless everyone else is rich also your likely going to be a target by the more poorer students for theft or damage to the machine.
You could keep it home, but if you need it for class then your exposed again.
Also at that age your not very careful yet, a MacBook Pro is a expensive and easily damaged machine.
Unless your made of money and so are others at your school, I would recommned a low profile, just does the job cheap Windows PC.
If it dies, gets lost, stolen or damaged because of your inexperince handling senstivie electronics then it's no big deal.
You can buy a Mac later on when your sure you have a need for it, currently there isn't much advantage of owning a Mac compared to a PC, they do just about the same things now, one just looks prettier than the other.
Since 95% of the world uses Windows PC's your going to have to install Windows on the Mac in order to keep your skills up there or be unemployed, so it's a extra headache and expense.
    good luck

  • Should I buy a Macbook Pro for college? If so which one?

Going to college in a couple of weeks. I was planning on buying a Macbook Pro but I don't really know if I need it or if it's worth the price. I was looking at the 13 inch i5 and i7 versions. If I would buy the i5 one, I would like to upgrade the hard drive to 500G for an extra 50 bucks but was wondering if it was worth just going for the i7 processor version which already includes a 500G hard drive. It would be an extra 250 dollars. Also, if I buy either one of these, will it last me 4-6 years of college? I know that technology goes by fast and would rather spend an extra couple hundred dollars if its going to last me longer. I am majoring in Petroleum Engineering and will not be using much video editing or gaming.
I've been reading many reviews and statements about Macs from all over the internet but I have a few more questions about Macbook Pros. I have always been a PC guy.
Do Macs really stay fast longer? Like doesn't slow down as much.
How limited is the compatibility now days?
    Worth the big price tag?
How big of a difference is the i5 and i7 processors?
Can you put a laptop lock on it? It will probably be a big target for thieves and I hear there are many in college.
    Should I get Apple Care?
Is there more programs I would need to buy? I am getting a 100 dollar gift card thing to the apple app store but wondering if I need Microsoft Office or something that isn't from the Apple store
The reason I ask these questions is because I would rather have an answer from a community of people with multiple answers and opinions than a biased website or reviewer. Well there will be some biased since this is an apple forum but please answer truthfully and as unbiased as possible please! Thanks!

Nobody in these forums represents Apple or any store.  So to find out whether you can buy something, you must contact stores or consult their websites directly yourself.   If not available in the online store, try contacting a retail store and see if they can make a special order

Apple stores do not ship abroad.

  • Could I be refused Applecare if I was to buy a MacBook Pro from Ebay?

So, I'm looking to buy a MacBook Pro. Only problem is, I'd rather not have to spend the £1000 I'd need to do so.. Mainly because I haven't exactly got it all, and even if I do, I'd rather not spend it all..
I've been browsing ebay looking at Pros for sale, and I've found a few possible ones- But I want to know if anyone else has done the same and had certain problems in the past? I mean, I would only consider buying from someone with 97% - 100% positive feedback anyways..
My idea was to buy a one that I liked the look of, for say, £400 maximum, and then just buy apple care afterwards from the actual apple store.. Good plan?
Some people have mentioned that Apple may refuse to sell/cover me with applecare? Would they actually refuse it? And if so- how could I get around it?
Any help and advice will be much appreciated! Thanks in advance-
    L!

You can only buy Applecare in the first year of ownership. Not sure if any Used Mac's can get Applecare. I think it is for the original buy only, but I may be wrong on that.
Sure if the system was older then one year Apple would not sell you Applecare even if you were the original owner.
That is One Year from Date of Original Purchase. 367 day old NO Applecare.

  • I am about to buy a MacBook Pro 13" and have a question.

I am about to buy a MacBook Pro 13" but need help deciding between the i5 model or the i7. I am in all kinds of engineering classes and will be running heavy programs on it. I will be creating mobile apps, will be using it to create large documents, and using Autocad. Which model would you reccomend? Also, I plan on buying next weekend, so will OS X Mountain Lion be pre-installed on it or will I have to update myself? Thank You.

I am now currently studying in Switzerland and I would like to buy a macbook pro in USA. So may I ask how much for the shipping fees? Thanks a lot

I'm not so sure if it's possible that Apple ships internationally. Why not just look into getting one in your country that you live in?

instead of buying an Apple USB superdrive, is it safe to use third party usb optical drive ?
Not only would it be safe but less expensive as well.  The tray loaders are deemed to be the most reliable.  Apple does not support Blueray so avoid that.
    Ciao.

  • When would it be wise to buy a macbook pro retina

i would like to know when would be a good time to buy a macbook pro
I have one already and was wondering when the newer models will be in stores and perhaps some idea of what chip set along w/ other specs they might be using.
I like the all flash mem concept and other aspects yet would also like to see the hardware tested by users. if some owns a retina perhaps you could share with me yr. thoughts of it along w/ any rumors and flaws. Are these new macbook pros worth the price and when will newer models be avaliable??

IMHO Never. To limited even if they fix the current problems with the current units or in a newer version.
    It is a glorified iPad.

  • Should I buy a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air

I am currently going into high school and have saved enough money to buy a macbook. However, I am debating to if i should buy a MacBook Pro or a Macbook Air. I would use the laptop for these things
    1. Basic Microsoft programs(Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. for school)
    2. I will also be Parallels on my mac
    3. Light amount of gaming (League of Legends)
    4. Websurfing/Research ( usually with an abundance of pages open)
    5. Studying ( as any student would do)
    6. Video Watching
    7. Music
I am willing to upgrade the internals of the macbook but have a budget of about 1,250 dollars. Advice about which laptop to pick as well as what upgrades may need to be made for the internals will extremely help. Thank you

In addition to what Japib wrote
You might be able to shave $50 or so via education pricing at online Apple Store
Parallels has education pricing, ditto MS Office. Your school (district) might have some education prices for software.

  • Can i buy a MacBook/Pro from the US online store from another country?

    Hi guys,
is it possible to pay for the US online store for buying a MacBook / Pro and ship it within the states of course??
one of my family members are there and they are not that much into computers, is it possible to buy it from here (Jordan) using a Jordanian Credit Card and put the shipping address in the states??
I didn't know where to post this exactly, so hope i can be answered and hope i can be directed into the right department instead of deleting it
    Thank you

Sorry, but the US Apple Store cannot accept credit/debit cards with billing addresses outside of the US nor checks on non-US banks.

Hi I Am a digital textile designer and  planning to buy my first retina macbook pro. I need expert advice, which model should i buy 15 inch base model or with dedicated graphics card. i will use macbook for digital designing on Adobe photoshop and multi tasking. so now really confused is intel iris pro graphics will handle heavy files on photoshop or Nvidia GT750 m will good for heavy work. I am working on very large resolution file like 10 to 15k in resolution approx 1 GB in file size with lot of filters is being use while designing. Which model will handle above task well and last longer.

    Look at the specifications here:

You may be confusing the quad core CPU with the Graphics processor.
It should have no difficulty in running Adobe Photoshop.

im based in qatar. can i buy a macbook pro online and have it shipped to a relative in california?

I apologize if this is "sticking my nose in where it does not belong", but ...
At least one other poster received a "gift" of an 11 in Macbook Air from a grandmother, but really wanted a 13 in Pro.  The question was if the computer could be swapped for the better unit.
I assume the recipient will not be so inapproptiate as to say "wrong computer -- I want a better one!!!", but the recipient may have certain items on their "Wish List".

  • Can I buy a macbook pro from US?

According to the currency now, it seems that buying a Macbook pro in U.S is cheaper than in Australia. Anyone who know that is allowed to.

While the US price is lower, you need to purchase it in the US to get it (the online stores will only sell to the specific country they are tied to). If you have a friend that can buy one and send it, then you can go that route, though I suspect the postage will make up for the price difference and there's a good chance you might get stuck paying a duty on it.
Alternatively, if you just happen to be in the USA, you can purchase one. You may have to pay duty on it, though. I'm not endorsing it, but I know that some people dress up the computer (put it in a computer bag, customize you applications and desktop, load music, etc.) so that it looks like you left home with it -- to avoid duty (since they won't make you pay duty on your personal effects that you left home with).
