Buying a multifunction - need recommendations

I'm looking for the best multifunction (printer, fax, copier, scanner) for a home office that works with OS X and a MacBook Pro.
Any recommendations?

I am thinking about Epson or HP machines, Apple shop told me that Epson are better supported by OS X, but I like more HP printers.
With the Epson you have one only choice for inkjets: Stylus DX7000F
That seems to be the only with Fax feature. I have already called Epson hotline to ask about Fax feautures and I have already discovered that it can send and receive fax with computer off but you cannot send fax directly from computer: it is not detected like a modem/fax so you have to print your documents and then manually send them :-/
So I am now looking for HP products and I have still to know if they can send and receive fax from computer applications.
You have to see which features you need, if you prefer a office printer for standard documents or if you prefer photos printing.

I concur with Harm's recommendation. The Quadro 1800 is obsolete: It is based on the equally-obsolete GeForce 9600 GT but with only a 192-bit memory bus instead of a 256-bit memory bus. As such, the only memory configuration that was available on the Quadro 1800 was 768MB. Unfortunately, Premiere Pro CS5 requires a minimum of 765MB of free, unused graphics memory just to even enable GPU accelerated mode at all even with the hack. But since Windows itself eats up some of that 768MB, you'd be left with less than 750MB of free, unused graphics RAM with that Quadro 1800. As a result, Premiere Pro CS5 will be stuck in software-only mode even with the hack if you have the Quadro 1800 as the primary card.

A 15" mid-2009 MBP RAM specifications are: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
As has been pointed out, OWC is an excellent source for Mac compatible RAM. Crucial is another first rate source for Mac RAM. RAM from either vendor will work just as well as any purchased from Apple with the bonus of being less expensive and having a lifetime guarantee.

Two reasons:
The movie companies control what Apple can sell/rent - sometimes they simply change it to purchase only or rental only.
Secondly, if your Settings for Itunes store are set to HD sometimes you won't see an option to purchase or even teh movie at all if it's only available in SD.
There are also sometimes discrepancies between iTunes on computer and AppleTV implying the stores work slightly differently or have different connections. Check if it's available in iTunes.

If you need the drive to be able to boot those Macs, you'll need FireWire connectivity. If you ned to use a system optical disk to upgrade or re-install the OS. or repair your hard drive, you must boot from the optical drive. If either computer's built-in optical drive has failed, or does not support reading DVDs, you'l need to boot from an external sooner or later.
If all you need is a burner, then USB opticals are cheaper and should work fine.

Sorry if this is wrong forums area, but I need this cleared up!
Hello, I would like to make an API/applet/graphics game in java. The game is where you control an empire and its resources, ect, ect. I decided to use java for a game like this, because of the so-call "easier" use of API and applet gfx than C/C++. I know a little bit of C lang, and a little bit of Java, but I need recommendation.
Question 1:
What is suggested to run a 2d game, with color graphics? And I want it to have the ability to play some sounds, and display jpegs when needed. I am confused if this is an applet that can do this? I want my game to be stand-alone, and not in a browser.
For example, I want it to show some gfx, while its in an API interface with a file menu, ect. But below it would be the 2d (applet?).
I know I have much to learn, but first before I get tutorial hunting, I need to KNOW what is possible to do this? Ty for help.

And I'd like some good tutorial links, and recommended books to help me for being a newb, and want to learn gfx, applet.

Need recommendation on all items to buy at same time

Thanks to the IRS wealth redistrobution racket, I now have unplanned money free to buy a complete home theater setup. I am looking to buy a LED Flat screen, audio / DVD/Blue Ray package, and whatever is required to stream movies and shows from my computer. I have a Linksys wireless router (WRT300N), an ALienwarre XPS 9000 (12GB ram, GTX 260 GPU, etc) and a 23 inch HD LCD panel for my comp area.I have read various manufact web sites and understand possibe compatability issues with TV / blue ray plaeyer, etc, so I'd like to get all the items in the same brand.I currently subscribe to Dish sat TV but am willing to cancel the extra channels and pay for web TV and movies since it appears at first glance that I would save a lot of cash by doing that.
My planning factors are:
1. Limited to max $3k
2. would like 46 inch minimum with 120 refresh.
3. wireless theater speakers preffered.
4. Wireless interent to TV or TV device. Can run cable if needed, but last option.
5. DVD / Blue Ray player (can be home theater combo like Sony offers).
I visited the Geek Squad web site and reviewed the consultation page, but am unclear if includes spec'ing a recommended system for the consult fee.

Congrats for getting the IRS to fund your entertainment. Looks like you've got this well thought out.
I'd suggest only a few things...
The wireless speaker part of this isn't preferred, IMO. At most, a wireless rear speaker kit can be tolerated, but a quality HT system never sacrifices quality for cosmetics. Again, only my opinion.
In regards to streaming media, the Sony PS3 earns you a triple threat. Bluray, wireless media streaming/internet access, and gaming. Having a PS3 in your lineup is key to getting quality sound out of your $3k budget.
The consultation is a good idea if you do indeed plan on buying the gear from Best Buy. Depending on the quality of the installer, you may get excellent ideas, or total nonsense. Regardless, the money isn't lost.

EF-s 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM and
EF-s 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS STM
I've saved up around $3500 and am looking for my next investment in the camera/lenses. I'm mainly into wedding and macro photography, and ocasionaly do sports and wildlife. Till now I was using this with some accessories like wireless remote triger and a tripod to get my work. But its time for a upgrade i guess. I would like to stick with canon as a camera brand but am open for non-canon lenses. Please put in your suggestions for me.

Weddngs are primarily dark and benefit from cameras that can handle high ISO with low noise. Sports and wildlife action photography benefit from cameras with good focus and focus tracking and a fast continuous shooting speed.
The single camera that's good at all of that is the 5D III... but the "body only" version of a 5D III is $3400 and it CANNOT use your current EF-S lenses (EF-S lenses only work on APS-C crop-frame size sensor cameras -- full frame cameras require "EF" lenses (without the "-S" suffix.))
That's a bit over your budget... (especially since you'd still need some new glass) but it would be an ideal body.
The 6D is considerably less expensive, excellent at low light, but the focus and shooting system aren't optimized for action photography (it would not be much different than your 550D in that regard... that camera's forcus and shooting speed aren't optimized for action photography either.)
The 7D and 70D *are* good action photography, but will give you very little improvement in low-light over your current camera -- mostly they offer a big improvement in focus system and shooting speed.

Buying A New Mac - Recommendations for FCP?

It is sales tax holiday weekend in my state, so that means I can get a new Mac and save a significant amount of dough. I currently have a 17 inch PowerBook G4, 1.33 Ghz. with 2 Gb of RAM. I use the machine to do all sorts of graphics and video work, using programs like Final Cut Studio, Adobe Creative Suite, iWork and iLife.
I'm interested in opinions on a new machine. There are some budget constraints, but I'd like to know the following:
1. Is the iMac 24 inch a viable option as a video editing station using Final Cut Pro Studio? One option I am considering is to buy an iMac 24 inch and a MacBook, doing my video work on the iMac and presentation work on the Macbook. What is your opinion about this?
2. I've looked on the Apple Store at both new and refurb MacBook Pros. If you had to pick a model, which gives the most bang for the buck? Do you think a refurb Core 2 Duo machine would be fine for my needs? Is there a disadvantage to buying a refurb vs. a new machine for the style of work I am doing?
3. Again, concerning Macbook Pros...do you prefer a 15 inch or 17 inch screen? Are there any disadvantages for going with the smaller screen? Both sizes come in both matte and glossy finishes: do you recommend one over the other for video editing?
4. Are Apple's RAM module prices in line with others? I would like to trick out the machine with as much RAM as possible right now. If Apple is high, who would you buy RAM from? I have used Other World Computing in the past, but I hear Apple is now competitive on this.

It has taken me longer to get resources lined up for my new Mac purchase, but I think the consensus here is to buy the 15 inch MacBook Pro instead of the 17 inch and purchase an external monitor.
I've looked at the refurb units available and they have a 15 inch MBP with a 200 Gb hard drive and 2 Gb of RAM and the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB of GDDR3 memory for $1699. They also have a 15 inch with the same specs with the exception of a 250 Gb hard drive and a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 512MB of GDDR3 memory for $1999. Is the hard drive bump and the VRAM increase on the NVIDIA card worth the extra $300?
I also note that there is a 17 inch MacBook Pro that slots in with basically the same computer as the lower priced 15 inch model, save only a 160 Gb hard drive instead of a 200 Gb one for $1899. Should I even think about this one or just concentrate on the 15 inch?
I'm still torn over the screen...glossy or matte. I do lots of Web work and audio/video production on my machine. Is one style advantageous over the other one for what I do?
I'm also thinking about external monitor options for the 15 inch solution if I go that way. Apple has the 20 inch for $499 refurb and the 23 inch (of which my workplace owns 2 of on my workstation) for $749. Is the 23 inch worth the extra $250? Should I consider another make of external monitor?
I'm going to upgrade RAM from 2 to 4 Gb, and Other World Computing has that today for approximately $94. I'll have to remove all of Apple's RAM and add in my own here, right? OWC also has an upgrade for the hard drive to a Hitachi 320 Gb 7200 RPM model for $160. I guess this would be the time to make that move while I'm replacing the RAM, or do you think a better deal will be coming down the line soon?

Need recommendation for external HD

I need one that can boot my iMac externally since my seagate goflex will automatically go to sleep whenever I boot it from there where it will shut down my Mac.

Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;

All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

Need recommendations: New graphics card for HPE-400y

My computers has all the original parts except the PSU and HDD. I recently changed the PSU to a Corsair CX430. The current hard drive is a WD Caviar Black 2TB.
I use my computer for Guild Wars 2, Maya (models and animation), Zbrush, Corel Painter, and Photoshop.
My current graphics card (Radeon HD 5450) has issues playing Guild Wars 2. The FPS is 30 or lower if I try to play the game with medium or high settings. The FPS also drops when I'm playing the group PVP event known as World Vs World. I often have to have the graphics on the lowest setting in order to get 30 -45 FPS.

Hi,
You should be able to get a double wide card in your PC. Length may be a problem due to all of the cables. If the space below the optical drive is open then you might try to stuffing the extra cable lengths into that location.
BTW-- very nice photos. Not many will go through the effort to do so.
Consider trying one of the below graphics.
MSI NVIDIA GTX N750 TI and the MSI GTX N750 TF Both of these graphics cards are significantly faster then your existing 5450.
Know what the return policy is before your buy.
You have an excellent Corsair power supply. I would prefer that you had a 500 watt PSU so that the higher performing graphics cards could be tried. This NVIDIA GTX 660 specifies at 450 watt minimum but the 12v amperage from your Corsair CX430 is more than sufficient. It might be worth giving it a go. It's about 50% faster than the above two graphics cards. I typically don't recommend that graphics cards be used with PSUs below the graphics card manufacturer's minimum requirements but the Corsair CX430 should work.

Need recommendation for bootable External HD for CCC

Hi ! I recently came to the forums to get info on how to effectively back up my mid-2010 MBP 500 Gb because according to Disk Utility I need to reformat my HD
I am currently only using Time Capsule to back up with Time Machine. I had initially decided to drag my iPhoto library, itunes, and movies (along with some other user files) to a new Seagate 500 gb GoFlex portable External HD that I had. But since I've done that, I've also done more browsing on the boards here and learned that I probably should be making a bootable clone of my HD (using Carbon Copy Cloner). That sounds like a logical idea, and Im embarassed I didn't know about it sooner. So I plan to purchase the CCC immediately and do this before it's too late. On their website they specifically say NOT to use Western Digital drives because some of them are not bootable. I also saw some comments that the Seagates "go to sleep" and probably should be avoided. I'm not sure how up-to-date those forums are so I am coming here for some recommendations/suggestions.
Before seeing those comments I had seen a few in the local stores here I was considering (WD passport, SeaGate backup plus, Toshibo Canvio Connect)...but now I'm confused.
Any suggestions for an External HD that I can use? (also, I was thinking 1 TB was a decent size to get)?

Bootable clone is very important to have, and MUCH more useful than time machine in general.
Forget about CCC, Superduper does the same thing for FREE. Download the APP SuperDuper (most use it).
Some advantages of a cloned HD:
In case of an internal HD crash and failure, there is absolutely nothing quicker to getting back to 100% operation than having a HD clone handy to either boot from, or within 20 mins. installing and removing the bad HD. Nothing to install software-wise, and a speedy immediate return to your computer use and productivity.
If you do an option key startup at boot you can directly boot to your cloned drive externally and operate from same like normal.
Sandboxing: With the help of the Cloned Drive, you can perform sandboxing, or the testing of new software, their updates and applications before they are installed on your Mac system. Moreover, if there are issues with the system, you can troubleshoot them by booting off the Clone. Many people test new APPS or experiment with a secondary clone and never worry about a failure or serious issue since the internal HD is untouched and the secondary clone can be wiped afterwards if any major issue occurs in testing. This is an invaluable tool in many instances.
If you sell you computer for purchase of a new one, you can take the clone you have on hand and install same or clone it to the new internal drive of your new Mac.
As it turns out one of the huge positive benefits of a clone is that people were seeing faster HD speeds; with APPS booting up from the clone than they had seen with the internal HD. The cloning applications in cloning the drive defragments the data to the clone and remove the “holes” in the cloning process.
With a small portable HD clone you can take your ‘computer’ anywhere to most any other current Mac and boot from your HD clone and have your entire system and its data immediately there for use. In case one is across the world and their macbook gets stolen, or damaged, with another Mac you can be up and 100% in the time it takes to boot to the new or borrowed Mac!
You can clone from your external clone to the internal HD/SSD in case of corruption.
The best thing that can be said, ideally, when your HD crashes with all its data is “so what, I’ve got a clone right here” and you can return to normal operation within seconds (by booting from the clone) or minutes (by swapping drives).
In separating out your system hub (OS) and your data hub, and storing them separately, is if you make only periodic clones (every month or so), and have a HD crash, the worst case outcome is that what is lost on your clone are some bookmarks and preferences since your data hub containing your vital files is constantly archived separately as it should be.
Disadvantages of a cloned HD:
A HD clone takes a rather long time to update since it checks all files for changes.
Ideally you would erase and create a new clone of your updated system every 2 weeks or month, which would therefore leave a gap in data integrity and OS files and system changes.
Autonomous constant data hub archiving fills this downside “gap” of HD clones, wherein which the worst that would be lost is a 2 week or one month window of application updates, or system changes irrelevant to your vital data.

If you're handy you can "roll your own" with a bare drive and an enclosure
Its never the WD mechanical HD itself.      None of those posts on "data corrupted .....Mavericks...HD RAID arrays" has any issue with the mechanical HD from WD
(that being said WD quality is the worst and I refuse to buy them).
Ill let you know when I find a HD enclosure that is worth more than 50 cents and/or is reliable.

Haven't gone to Snow need recommendations

I've SL on another volume, when I double-click, say the applications folder, the icons that pop up seem slow to draw, that is, generic icons display then they draw out, takes about a second but it seems more instant on Leopard.
I need to update my Leopard volumes I think, would like to pugrade the graphics card to a 5770 wich is a no go with Leo, but want to be sure that Snow is ready for prime time. Anyone in a production environment (Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator etc.) and going (mostly) smooth? Leopard is running pretty stable here so the reason as to the trepidation.
Experiences/Advice/Recommendations appreciated.

I would format a new drive with SL DVD, a must, and then clone your current system to that or clean install (safer). Then install SL over your system. Leave your current system as is. Any RAID array you have that you boot from now would have to be rebuilt. Good idea to do the same with data arrays also.
But you said you have SL on another volume already, but sounds like trying to launch apps from Leopard.
When 10.6.4 came out, there were long, very long, threads on graphic related issues. CS5 helps manage memory much better if you work a lot with large files.
Maybe the best time to upgrade to SL actually is when it is EOL and as developed as it will be. NOT when it came out 14 months ago (or any .0-.1-.2 for any version).
Wait for 10.6.x on DVD and for ATI 5x70 or successor to clear the air, seems like you can't buy either anyway (and 5870 has never been available in an upgrade kit). You can't boot with the 5770 (thanks to no support on 10.6.3 DVD or the $29 10.6). And UEFI doesn't provide basic VGA for unknown cards so you have to keep that in mind.
Some people are still waiting on Sonnet drivers for E4P. Better support for the 64-bit kernel drivers. Better ATI drivers. The total lack of an Nvidia card (outside the GT 120 which is 'quaint' card).

NEED RECOMMENDATION FOR NEW MP3 PLAYER

I have a Clip+ and a Fuze+, but both are old and the battery will not hold a charge for very long. I've been considering the Clip Sport. I love the interface of my old Fuze+...the way all your music (internal and external drives) all show up on one list. I also saw on Sandisk.com that for the Clip Sport the higest SDHC card recommended for mp3 is 8GB. I can live with that, I guess. Does anyone find it inconvenient to go back and forth from the internal drive to the card when selecting music to play or for making a playlist? I'd really like to get a Clip Zip, but I found an grossly overpriced refurb on ebay. Does anyone know where I can find a reasonably priced Clip Zip? I'll be looking forward to hearing from users RE recommendations for a new player. Thanks in advance.

At less than half the price of a new one though, imo the refurbs are worth the risk, especially if you buy two of them. As for the Clip Sport, it has a limit of 2,000 songs for each of the internal memory and the card memory. I use 256 kbps mp3 for my music. It took around 14GB for me to reach the 2,000 song limit, so I use a 16GB card in my Clip Sport. A 16GB card holds around 14.6GB or so of files. The Sport can't combine songs from internal and card memory into a single playlist. I also have Clip+ and Clip Zip players which I have put Rockbox on. Rockbox is a free alternative firmware (operating system) which is available for the Clip+, Clip Zip, Fuze, and Fuze+, but not the Clip Sport or Clip Jam. Rockbox enables many additional features, and has a huge song database. Some format 128GB micro SDXC card as FAT 32, fill it with songs, and use it in a Rockboxed Clip+ or Rockboxed Clip Zip. The Clip Sport is okay if you don't have a large number of songs you want on the player. Some might buy a 4GB one for example, and use the internal storage for classical music and podcasts, and have a 16GB or 32GB card in it for rock music. If you are okay with 2,000 or fewer songs on a player, then the Clip Sport would be good for you. Yes, you could put around another 1,000 songs in internal memory at 256 kbps if you get an 8GB Sport, but then you couldn't integrate those together in a playlist with songs on the card. Depending on the average length of your songs, you might need a 32GB card to reach the 2,000 song limit, especially if your songs are at 320kbps mp3. Also keep in mind that Sandisk players(except for those that support Rockbox and have Rockbox installed on them) have trouble with cards faster than class 4, so using a Sandisk class 4 micro SDHC card is advise for maximum compatability. Some 32GB cards by other makers might cause problems in Sandisk players even if they are class 4 or slower.
